Through the years, I've had the unfortunate task of finding, catching, and transporting two abandoned kittens and a dog to Green Hill the Manor. The surprising urgency with which Green Hill works to find good homes for their pets is impressive. From regularly offering pet introductions at PetSmart / Petco to their weekly spot on KPNW 1120 to discuss the Pet of the Week. They've been known to slice their adoption fees in half for animals not immediately adopted; all of the animals adopted have all of their shots / vaccinations; they are potty trained and have chips implanted, too! I have not noticed any smells, the animals seem well fed and they have medicine available for the animals that need it. The staff has always been helpful and nice. I ended up adopting a senior cat and she is just what I wanted; talkative, follows me from room to room and is such good company. When my dog went missing, I called to check to see if he was in their custody. They said he was not, but they will take my info in case anybody finds him. The protocol. Turns out they were notified by this person that had my dog. Greenhill failed to call me. Instead, gave that person my contact information. I never received a call from that person who held my dog for 45 days. After which, it is legal to adopt a dog that has not been claimed. Greenhill had no answers for me. Other than to get an attorney because it is a civil matter and out of their hands. No apologies given from Greenhill. Just excuses. We miss our Boomer so much. read more

We have a dog that is lost. They were very helpful on telling us about all the sites we could post too. In order to get more coverage. She has been gone from August 12, 2024 till now. She is greatly missed. Our hopes at this point is that someone has her that is giving her a good home and lots of love. She was friendly and very loving. Thanking everyone that has helped her. You cannot meet a cat before you adopt. I went in hoping to make a good connection with a cat and seeing if they would be a good fit before spending $200 and providing a good home for the next 15-20 years. I was wrong. You need to go to their website and find a cat that you have never met and don't know anything about, and tell them you want that cat. Then you get to meet them. But before you meet your next pet for 2 decades, you have to adopt.... Don't go here, they don't want to rescue animals, they want to sell them with no care. read more

Unfair adoption process. I called several times to check on a dog that was on their website. I started calling the first day the dog showed up on their website and they told me the day the dog would be released to be adopted. They kept telling me to check nightly because that's when they will update to show the dog is now available, I was checking daily. Next thing I know, on their social media page, it shows the dog being adopted by a new family. This dog never became available. I know people that have volunteered there in the past and it's well known that there are a lot of inside deals going on for the animals that are available on the website. Very disappointing. I will go to another Humane Society in nearby towns before I will give Greenhill my business. Shady business practices. read more

After today's visit I will be pulling all of my funding and donations I have given for several years and will now ask my friends and family to do the same. The people there are anything but polite. They refused to let me view the dogs because I didn't have my dog with me. We explained that if we found a dog that we connected with we would gladly bring our dog in to make sure it was a match. She told me that we could not visit because we weren't adopting today and only wanted to see. I just wanted to see if there was a connection first. They will put a dog down before they will let you look. I left in tears. read more

Sarah was extremely helpful in the adoption process for our little big floof Ghost. She was very professional, knowledgeable, and encouraging throughout the whole process. And matter of fact, in general the staff here was so nice and helpful at each visit I came! Aubrey at the front desk was super helpful too, coming in clutch with extra dog food, a dog toy, and some poop bags for us new dog owners! Three days ago we were able to walk in and choose a dog to visit with. Then we came in the following day to go through the adoption paperwork (which was not much) and picked up our doggo the next day after getting neutered! Worst adoption process I've ever seen. For all those wanting to adopt, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!! They say they close at 6pm but ACTUALLY close at 5pm to customers, and they tell you to come in at 11am to adopt but then tell others to come at 10am so they can get in the front of the line and get first pick since it's first come first serve. So they say they open at 11 but if you're not there at 10am you have no chance. Hopefully this review helps someone else not have their child's dreams crushed because the kitty they wanted was taken by someone else solely because the staff is awful and chooses to tell some customers the trick to getting first pick over other customers. And I didn't even mention the fact that staff spent half of our conversation with a blank look on their face like they couldn't compute anything I was saying. Go you Greenhill... read more

Came to see and play with the cats and kittens, but once we approached the door and were greeted by an employee, we were told we could only see the animals if there was one in specific we wanted to adopt and planned to adopt that day. Never in my life have I been to a humane society/animal shelter that doesn't let you interact with as many of the pets as you want, take a day or two to decide, and then come and adopt. They seemed very adamant about not letting anyone "browse" the pets. Very unprofessional, IMO. read more

Just recently had a "lost" cat show up at my property. Fairly good condition, healthy, very well socialized, litter box trained, crate trained, very pretty cat. Most likely somebody abandoned it- I get a lot of dumped cats at my rural location because there's a turn-out right below my house which serves as a convenient place for people to pull over and dump cats. Over the 30 years at my location, I've lost count of how many unwanted cats have magically appeared on my doorstep. Anyway, once I got this cat set up in a crate with food, water and a litterbox, I put a call into Greenhill to look into getting the cat into the adoption system. As I understand it, Greenhill Humane Society has been contracted by Lane county government to deal with lost, abandoned, feral, and surrendered cats. There's no more help available at what was Tri-agency Animal control on 1st Street in west Eugene. As I understand it, Greenhill is now supposed to be taking care of it all. No one was available to speak to me when I called, so I had to leave a voicemail. In my message, I carefully described what the cat was like, the condition it was in, and that I already had two cats, so I didn't really want another one myself, but that the cat would be highly adoptable because it was both beautiful, friendly and well socialized. The next day, someone calls me back and informed me that the cattery is "full" and that they couldn't take it into the system. When I told them that I already had 2 cats so it would be very difficult for me to keep the animal, they actually told me to just let the cat go, saying that cats are "very resourceful" and can survive in the wild. Basically they were telling me to re-dump the cat! I'm not making this up, they actually said that... Without even confirming whether this animal was spayed or neutered... No earmarking was suggested nothing like that. Just turn 'em loose. I was incredulous. This isn't my first experience with this organization. I've lived in this area for 40 years. Over those decades, from time to time, I've had dealings with Greenhill Humane Society. A few of those experiences have been "OK". But, I am not going to lie, a lot of those encounters were VERY negative. Through those decades, Greenhill's had some really psycho employees/volunteers who absolutely should not have been dealing with the public. That said, in even the worst of those lousy encounters, I NEVER had anyone at Greenhill ACTUALLY instruct me to dump a cat back into the wild. My response to the suggestion was, "Hey! I don't know whether this cat is Intact or not. If it's an intact female, it's going start producing kittens in short order!" (I hadn't determined whether it was a male or female at that point- the kitty struggled quite a bit when I first tried to check, so I just let it be and gave it chance to acclimate a little bit before checking again) Basically, Greenhill's response conveyed an attitude of, "Oh well. Not their problem. Nothing we can do about it." To be fair, the person I spoke with DID tell me that I could check back in a week or so and see if any room had opened up to put the cat in quarantine... this was said to with such a lackluster tone that I figured there really wasn't much point to trying to call back. Listen, I totally get that during the "kitten season" ANY animal shelter is going to be overwhelmed and inundated with many animals needing help. But even at the worst floods of animals being turned over there are certain things they could and should have suggested. For example: * They did NOT offer to have me bring the cat in to be scanned for a microchip... So much for chipping being a sure-fire way to find lost pet! I had to go to a private source to get someone to scan the cat for a microchip. * They did NOT ask me whether I might be willing foster it while they worked to make room for it.. NO suggestion regarding ANY kind of fostering possibility AT ALL with any other group or any private individual. * They did NOT make any suggestion about posting an "animal found" ad With them or on Craigslist or ANYWHERE else. * They did NOT ask if I would be willing to take the animal in for a health exam, nor did they refer me to any kind of low-cost venue for such a service . I will be honest here, I've thought Greenhill Humane Society was a pretty questionable organization for a long time anyway, but now, DANG, I'm completely turned off. And it pisses me off that my Lane county tax dollars go to support that crackpot organization. Seriously, this whole experience has just left a really bad taste in my mouth. What a JOKE. read more

Honestly, the staff feels undertrained in how to interact with people coming in. When we came in to adopt a cat, the front desk person was super excited to tell us about how they were JUST now leaving and kept doubling down when I got sad. When they finally noticed I was upset, they only said "well it's a good thing they found a home, right?" This can be a very emotional process for people, and frankly, that already upsetting experience made the whole situation a thousand times worse. Additionally, when we were there the day before to pick out the cats (and came back as soon as we could), the volunteers had skipped a couple in line and giggled about it in the back when they found out in front of me and my partner. These experiences have left a sour taste in my mouth, and I definitely will be reccomending people go anywhere else in Eugene/Springfield in the future. It's clear the people there care about the animals, but I have to hope you can have better adoption experiences in the area. read more

Worst experience ever!! Never going here for any reason!!! Some shelter they are pffft! More like a fake shelter that doesn't give a flying care about any animal! We rescued a dog a few months ago from out of state, and we moved back here. Ever since we have owned the dog her behavior has been off. We understand she has been through a lot but ultimately thought we could help her. (We have a boy dog as well which we have had since he was a pup and he has turned out so sweet and well trained.) but this dog came with really bad sep anxiety and we don't know her past but she has issues being petted, she has bitten us, torn apart our carpet, walls, chewed through kennels. Etc. we have to go to work and can not spend every hour with her. We think she would to well with a stay at home person. THIS IS WHERE GREENHILL COMES IN! We filled out apps, left voicemails etc trying to get ahold of one humane being to drop her off. We have had it with her and she needs more then we can give. After calling and calling for days finally they sent us an email back saying they could NOT accept her beyond her behavior. Every shelter from Salem to Eugene has said the same thing. But frankly we have had it! If no one is willing to take her what do we do? It's illegal to abandon a pet in OR, and it's not what we want to do, but frankly no shelter wants to do THEIR JOB and take in a surrender pet, we CAN NOT KEEP HER! I had been eyeing this wonderful cat for a couple of weeks. It was 1 year old. I am in the process of moving so I wanted to pay for it, offer to pay rent, so the cat wouldn't be nervous when I moved him.I offered to pay for it, but was informed that they could only do a maximum of a 24-hour hold. I do not argue NOR debate the policy. What I am inquiring about, is the attitude that I was dealt with the lead cat person, Ashley, which, due to nature of previous complaints, I am coming to the assumption, is the same person that is the subject of these complaints. She was very interrogative in nature, came out, was very abrasive, and basically kept on interviewing me in a continuously interrogative manner , and finally asked me "So you just want this cat just because it looks like your childhood cat?"( sarcastic). What kind of question is that? I replied to her" No, I've been looking at him for a while, and I wish there cameras to record your conversation with me, because you're being very abrasive in your line of questioning with me." She said" Well there's a volunteer in the next cage and can listen to us,...so there you go!" My patience grew thin and I informed her that I'm going to talk to her supervisor because her attitude was borderline hostile. Ashley is not a person that should be working there. I understand that people have a bad day. However, due to her continuous and aggressive questioning, I believe it to be already developed in her personality. In my opinion ,she is an individual who has no respect for people, like myself, who want to provide a good home for a pet. Again, I am NOT debating the 24-hour hold policy. I just wanted to inquire within because of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. I am assuming that, due to the negative reviews on Yelp regarding the interrogative nature of an employee,that she probably has had previous complaints against her. I currently volunteer at Greenhill and it's quickly become my favorite place to spend time at here in Eugene! I walk dogs, lead trainings, and take pups on tv to get adopted and have gotten to know some of the wonderful staff. Everyone there truly works for the good of the animals and they really care about the living environment the animals experience. I hope everything comes through for the new shelter to be built because there's so much opportunity for animals in need and I know it'll help so many more once the upgrades are done. I also have some friends who foster for them and it's been a good experience on their end as well. I love the people that work here. They all have compassion for the animals that come in. My neighbor across the street just up and left Lin the middle of the night and left her cats behind. I couldn't just let them starve so I tried to take care of them by adding food on my back deck but by this time they were feral and then had kittens underneath our motor home. I was able to get a carrier and bring them in, I still didn't know how I did it but I did. They weren't feeling the caged life. They were a Persian mix and they guaranteed me that they would get adopted right away. Unfortunately the mom wasn't feeding them and one had a eye infection that lead to it losing its eye but they kept me one updated. I was so grateful for their kindness I gave a donation and asked about volunteering. Then Covid happen. I generally believe they fight for all the animals that come in and honestly want them to go to loving homes. So if you ever think about donating to a great cause these animals truly deserve it. read more

Really disappointed in the communication issues at Greenhill. My friend found a cat and trying sent him to Greenhill so he could be found by owners or he himself would adopt this cat. He followed protocol "checking online" and didn't get told until days later that the cat he was looking out for was dead. We called on Tuesday specifically to figure out how he was doing to be told that the cat was being processed which was the same day the cat was euthanized possibly during or before (I called late afternoon).. I had to tell my friend myself on Sunday what happened after we both called in and I was only able go get farther because I asked to talk to staff in the back. Regardless of whether it was "the right thing to do" to euthanize the cat (he was older and in a lot of pain) my friend found this cat and when he "surrendered" the cat to Greenhill perhaps he did lose the right to hear anything because he wasn't the owner. Is it really fair though that nothing was mentioned? Couldn't there at least have been a note? Why aren't employees and volunteers given an actual status update to be in sync? I don't care if this is an "odd case" you have a demand to a supply and this is not how you do business. Bad communication. read more

They sold my relative a dying cat. Information that was not given was. A: They were unable to do an exam in her due to her aggressive behavior. B: Contraindications of A are that they managed to flea comb her and inspect her teeth. If she was being aggressive, would you put your fingers in her mouth? The part that wasn't divulged, but again contradicts point A is that she has a heart murmur that is a 4/6. C: They claim not to have known about the cat's terminal health issues due to inability to examine her. This cat is in end stage renal failure, liver failure and had severely arthritic joints. This all happened within a week ago. This is not a cat that she has had for years or months. She got her last week and brought her to the veterinarian four days later. At best, the people who run the cattery at Greenhill are liars. At worst, they are completely inept and should be shut down and replaced with more able and responsible cat caregivers. read more

I have made the difficult decision to surrender my newly adopted kitten. I adopted him from out of town and wanted to bring him in to Greenhill for the convenience for both the kitten and myself. I filled out the form on the website and submitted it. Ginny called me back literally in less than 30 minutes!! Wow!! She started by asking me how I was/am doing which was very empathetic. She explained that currently there is a waitlist. She knew that part of the reason for the surrender was due to adverse effects on my health. She recommended asking a friend or family member to accompany me to the original location. I contacted that place and am waiting to hear back so I can set-up an appt. Love greenhill!!! I just don't volunteer here every month for the last 3 yrs but just adopted my amazing 9 yr old pitbull Marshell from here. Everyone was so helpful they went beyond what I expected. We were able to spend as much time as we wanted with him before making a decision and over all adoption process only took around an hour. I foster animals for Greenhill so I see how carefully they make sure that the adoptees are well cared for and prepared for their forever home. Just adopted a cat from Greenhill and I was blown away by their facilities, the quality of their staff, and the great animals that they have. I'm a first time cat owner they were extremely helpful in answering all of my questions, giving me advice, and sending me home with a bunch of goodies (full bag of cat food, free vet visit) that come standard with every adoption. So I went to Green Hill humane society I rescued two huskies from a lady that was abusing them come to find out one of them was pregnant I didn't have no money and I was told to go to Green Hill and they would help me with food and stuff and she had the puppies quit nursing couldn't produce no more milk I again went to Green Hill and was turned down and laughed at told if I needed baby formula for the puppies that I could go buy it from Walmart and she was laughing at me and told me pretty much that it's my responsibility and they could not help me and to go pay for it from the store because they don't carry stuff like that as she was laughing at me I am opening lawsuit and a huge complaint with the state of Oregon regarding this my family has donated so much to them in the past years and for them to laugh at me and turn me down and not send me any dog food any anything I was very appalled I feel very disrespected and I would like this to be resolved so the only way I feel like I know how to do that is take it to the courts they're supposed to be there to help not laugh at you and not turn you away I thought I was doing the right thing by rescuing these beat dogs and they treated me like scum. read more

We found a stray cat that we tried to have them take in, so it could be reunited with it's owner. They were completely unhelpful to us, and we will never give them another cent. Took my mother to look at the cats, she was finally ready to adopt after losing her dog she'd had for 17 years. We got there, there was only one other couple ahead of us. We were waiting for a while when finally one of the staff members came over and gave us a clipboard to fill out information. They told us it would be a little bit. We watch three people sit behind the counter talking to each other and no one was even looking at us. Mom filled out the information and waited for quite a while. Finally someone came to us and asked us which cat we were interested in. I explained that my mom was looking to get a cat but she wanted to greet them all, she was not going to pick out a cat based on a picture she wanted to meet their personalities. We were informed that that was not how the process was, and you could not just walk around and look at the cats anymore. I understand that there are covid restrictions, but allowing one family at a time to meet the cats seems reasonable. We had adopted our cat from Green Hill years ago , we went up and met every cat . We then decided on a cat, came back up with our children to meet the cat again before we adopted. So, we left and my mom ended up finding her new forever babies through a friend. So disappointed! Before my Dad's passing he would donate to Green Hill every year, never again! read more

I have adopted all of my animals from Greenhill; up until my last experience, they were my go to shelter. But after this experience I will NEVER do any adoptions or business with them, at least not willingly, ever again. So EWEB came out to do a meter reading on my house, and disturbed the gate, which means that my dog was able to get out. (At this point I'd like to mention that this happened during the holidays and I have a serious health issue, which is quite costly to treat. This is important later). After she got out, she was initially caught and transported to the Wag Spay and Neuter clinic, and they were able to contact me thanks to her microchip. Unfortunately I was at work and I could only email them back and forth. I had no PTO (paid time off) left so I couldn't get off work to go get her because I'd used all my PTO for my medical issues. First of all, Wag's address on Google is incorrect and they emailed me the address that was on Google, so when I told my husband he spent half an hour trying to find them, and by the time he figured out where they were they were closed, and she was transported to the main Greenhill location, who was also closed. I emailed the manager of Greenhill and he assured me that they'd be open by the time I got off work the next day so I could come get my dog. The next day they closed early and I was told that they would arrange for my dog to be transported to the 1st Ave. location. When I called the 1st Ave one SHE WASN'T THERE. And the main location, where she was actually at, was closed. And then the manager, JJ, had the nerve to tell me that I would be charged boarding fees since she'd have to stay another night. So because of their error, I was expected to fork over money that I didn't have, plus he told me she wasn't licensed in their system, except she had tags, so that was a blatant lie. Luckily I talked to someone at the 1st Ave one and they were able to arrange transport for my dog so we could get her. But they wanted to charge me $100 since this wasn't the first time she got out this year. So overall, they wanted charge me some $138. This is during Christmas. I have a 4 year old, who was missing his dog. I'm sorry, but what exactly would they have done if I couldn't pay? We are a loving family, and we give our animals a good home. We aren't irresponsible pet owners. Our gate was broken by EWEB, so she didn't get out because we weren't paying attention. Despite my serious medical issues all my animals are UTD on shots and are very healthy. All that being said, again, what would they have done? Denied a dog a loving home and take her back, to charge another family to adopt her? Making profit off of two families for the same dog, plus the emotional expense of a particularly vulnerable family? Or would they just euthanize her? I was able to get her back, but I had to pay for it out of money I didn't have to spare. They also treated us with nothing but rude behavior. I will never trust them again with my animals, and I will never adopt from them again. read more

My review might be outdated since my experience with Greenhill Humane Society was more than 10 years ago when I adopted my first cat from there. However, after all these years, I am still grateful for the experience and feel that I owe them a review. I got Mowmi, my first cat, from Greenhill back in 1997. It was a very new experience for me since I never had a cat or a dog in my life before. People at Greenhill were extremely friendly and helpful. They asked questions but they didn't interrogate you like many other places. They needed to make sure if you know how to take care of the animal if you don't have any experience and that you aren't going to move any time soon. The process was simple and efficient, but you could tell they were still very careful. You could buy supplies there right away as you are adopting. The supplies were extremely reasonable priced and actually cheaper than pets stores. The adoption fee was also very reasonable. I remember many places were already charging more than $50 for animal adoption fee back in those days when Greenhill was only charging as low as $30. The price also covered a health check, neutering and some shots for your new pet. They have a huge list of vets in the area that you can go to and I found one just next to where I lived at that time. The whole experience was just so smooth and pleasant. I have visited several shelters after I moved down to CA. So far none of the shelters here could compare to what I experienced at Greenhill. Mowmi passed away years ago but I cherish the memories of those years with him. Adopting a cat was definitely a life changing decision for me and I am glad I did it through Greenhill. read more

They have hours for people to come and play with the cats in the cat room there, and it is wonderful! Greenhill continues to be my favorite animal shelter after all these years. Having volunteered at this facility for quite a few years, I was able to get a feel for how things work behind the scenes. Talking to the (paid) staff at the Eugene Celebration this year was disappointing. The gentleman didn't seem to know much about the organization, despite the fact that his job was to promote it at events... Turns out, they're not a no-kill organization. It seems like they won't take in your animal if they' don't fit a fairly narrow set of age/breed/appearance guidelines. They have an incredibly long waiting list for Eugene residents to surrender their animals...but they import small dogs from out of state. No one on the waiting list has small dogs to surrender? Most humane societies/shelters of their size have animal care hotlines you can call (for free) to get advice on animal behavioral issues that would possibly prevent you from surrendering your animal in the first place. Greenhill doesn't, and when I called to ask why not, they didn't have any idea what I was talking about. I'm sure they're doing fine work, but an organization that takes in the amount of donations that they do needs to be doing exemplary work. read more

If you find a stray cat do NOT take it to green hill. I found a lost kitten and took it to green hill to see if it was chipped and get it help. When I arrived at green hill I was left sitting in a lobby for 40 minutes waiting for the cat surrendering person. When she did eventually come out the interaction was confrontational from the beginning. The first question she asked me was why I thought it was okay to show up without an appointment. When I had called the day before to set up one and left a voicemail. When I had not received a call back and was concerned about the cats health I decided to show up without an appointment. However I was unable to explain that because before I was able to speak she had moved on to her next attack which was who found the cat. When I explained that the cat was found by someone was when she began to call me a liar. This is when she snatched the carrier containing the scared kitten who she had not even checked the condition it was in and demanded i follow her to a back room. This is when she tossed the panicking kitten in a room and locked it. She then began demanding the information for the person who had found the cat. This is when I took my phone out to call my boyfriend to ask for the contact information of the person. This is when she accused me of lying for the second time saying " oh do you need to call someone to get your story straight?" After giving her the contact information she began to call them multiple times and demanding personal information. The reason I took the cat to the humane society for them was because they were at work and she was blatantly disrespectful of this and blew up their phone. When this was not working for her she began threatening legal action against me claiming that not providing information of who found the kitten is against the law. I would like to stress during this entire encounter no one from green hill was caring for the kitten she had left locked in this room. I was completely compliant and trying to get this kitten the help it needed but this woman had plans of showing off her power by making an easy process not only difficult but traumatic. read more
