Stopped in because the restaurant looked like it could have a nice beer selection and that it did! The beer was great. However, the food was just ok. We ordered the poutine fries as an appetizer which was tasty but it didn't seem to have cheese curds, it was more like melted cheese on top. We ordered the shrimp po boy and the chicken. The chicken lacked flavor big time. I was highly disappointed with it but the mash potato was good. The po boy was messy, the breading was falling off of the shrimp and my wife eventually had to deconstruct it to eat it. Overall, we'd return for appetizers and drinks but not a full meal. read more

Sour taste on our celebration - I came here for a friends birthday. We spent 7 hours ordering drinks and food and then finished with cake which we brought. The bar staff provided us with forks and plates. After cake was served, the manager came up to our party yelled at us for using plates and made continuous remarks under his breath. Honestly, based off his apparel I thought he was a patron making a joke... As a party we spent thousands and the manager did nothing but make rude remarks and make us feel unwelcomed. Inside is your general after-work drinks crowd, but it's spacious enough to not be a bother if you are at a table. For food, ordered the BLT Sandwich with a side salad ($12) - well toasted bread sandwiching a fair amount of bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Not too greasy and easy to eat. Side salad is a handful of greens with balsamic vinaigrette on top. Drinks are priced fairly here as well - with beers running around $4-7 and cocktails $10-13. I finally tried Greene Hook a few months ago and was super pleased with my visit! It's a great option if you are looking to enjoy a drink outside and don't want to deal with the Newark Ave or Surf City madness. Although the inside of the restaurant is spacious, they've got a large patio that fills up with a lively crowd during summer evenings. You can definitely tell that this is a big draw for the Exchange Place after work crowd. We started off with green tea gin coolers which despite the high price tag, were refreshing and strong! The menu has got a ton of gems, and you can keep things classic with wings or a burger or kick it up a notch with salmon or octopus. We kept it pretty classic and shared an order of the honey garlic wings and an portobello sandwich. The sandwich was pretty basic and the star of the plate was actually the fries which were perfectly crunchy and crispy. But, the real winner were the wings which came coated in the most delicious sweet ginger glaze. I'd come back just to share these if I wasn't feeling a full meal. Between the crazy good wings, outdoor space, brunch menu and fried chicken and mac and cheese combo, I've got plenty of reasons to plan another Greene Hook visit. Everyone else thought their food was just OK. Here's what they got: Korean ribs--very saucy! Fried chicken, jalapeno Mac (I tasted it. It was decent, lacked salt. But pretty good after I added.), biscuits, burger (it looked really good to me, but she wasn't feeling it), regular fries, and potato salad which was BIG-TIME TRASH. (Just mayo, no egg, no love. Love this place, neighborhood bar and hard to keep me from coming back every weekend. However, even though it's a sports bar I have tried many many nights to get them to turn off their spring training baseball highlights for the biggest game of the week and they always say "someone is watching it" or that they'll ask the manager and never do. Service: All of the staff were on top of it and really welcoming and professional. Some of the best service in Jersey City. We stopped at Greene Hook before heading into city around 4pm and the place got packed during happy hour, so it must be a popular place for an after work drink. A very friendly place with great service, extensive beverage selections and interesting menu choices, which were all good. We tried couple of appetizers(Deviled eggs and Beet salad) and 2 sandwiches(Portabella sandwich and fat joe). The value was excellent, averaging about $21 for sandwich and a drink. Parking was very convenient in a garage located almost adjacent to the establishment. Our ticket was validated for up to 4 hours, which made this an even better value. It gave us time to walk to the water and take in a great view of NYC from the other side. Over all, Great bar food and a playful environment with Ping pong, darts, shuffle boards. But the restaurant was LOUD with a strong echo that made conversation really difficult and being inside very unpleasant. The service was nice, but a little slow. Food was great! Working in Jersey City means that you get to try out tons of interesting and fun places for happy hour with your coworkers. This is definitely one of them. Even around 4:30, the place was pretty lively. Considering that the bar is on a side street (albeit close to Exchange Place), I was pleasantly surprised by the crowd; a mix of locals and young professionals looking for an afterwork cocktail. Service was great! Our waiter was very sociable and was vocal about drinks and apps. Our group ended up getting $1 oysters (a happy hour special), along with deviled eggs, ribs, poutine (with AND without duck confit), potato croquettes, French fries, loaded tater tots, and baked Brie, as well as a mix of different cocktails. While I didn't try everything, here were some standouts. Starting with cocktails, I had a solid whiskey ginger with Bushmills Red Bush. Beyond that, the bar has an interesting amalgam of different whiskeys, scotches, tequilas and vodkas. You won't be disappointed here if you like a stiff drink at the end of the work day. Oysters were fresh, even if they were on the small side (off season maybe?), but nonetheless delicious and a great deal! The loaded tots (which had chili on the bottom and cheddar and sour cream on top) reminded me of my college days in Minnesota, where I'd have the ubiquitous tater hot dish. It was hearty, not too greasy, and by one of my favorite apps on the menu. The poutine isn't quite the caliber of what you'd get after a roaring night on Rue St. Catherine, but it does get the job done if you have a fries/gravy/cheese curd craving. In fact, the regular French fries by themselves are that perfect balance of crisp and soft, and are best fresh. Lastly, I will have very sweet dreams about GH's baked Brie. Paired with crostinis and raspberry compote, this is one of the better things GH has to offer. Overall, I'd absolutely recommend this place for those looking for a new happy hour joint that's a little off the beaten path, has great ambiance, good alcohol variety, and elevated bar snacks. read more

We decided to give this place a try after walking by it for months. I hadn't heard much about Greene Hook, so I didn't have any expectations going in. It's a very clean place, with a nice looking bar and a decent amount of space. The staff were all very nice, efficient and polite. I ordered some oysters, which were excellent! My wife's salad, and the onion rings we shared were also very fresh and tasty. For my entree, I ordered the meatloaf. I was a bit bummed when I was told they had run out for the day, so I decided on a steak sandwich, instead. The steak sandwich was excellent, and the fries that came with it were pretty good. Next time, I'll try ordering the meatloaf again! Overall, a very pleasant dining experience and good food. We will be back. read more

And they have shuffleboard. And a worker was kind enough to help us out when he saw it wasn't sandy enough. And a dartboard. And those two things alone is enough for a good time.
