I was 58k steps into a 100k steps day when I arrived at the hallowed ground that is the Bronx Zoo…read more You really need to move as much as possible on the 100k step days, so zoos are the ultimate hack to keep moving while taking your mind off the throbbing of your legs. An old coworker of mine used to RAVE about the Bronx zoo, and he was not lyin. We saw everything, including but not limited to giraffes, rhinos, gorillas, camels, tigers, sea lions, aardvarks, lions, a peacock, etc. All those were rad, but seeing an Okapi truly altered my brain chemistry. I didn't even know an Okapi existed, and am still not fully convinced they do. It was a half zebra, half giraffe, and half horse hybrid. One cannot help but make the comparison to ManBearPig. It really got me wondering. If I didn't even know Zebraffehorse existed, what else don't I know about the world? Sometimes we get stuck in routines and being trapped in this bubble inflates our egos to the point where we think we understand everything. Seeing this Okapi humbled me and reminded me that all I know is that I know nothing. Get over to the Bronx Zoo, it's good for the soul. IG @johnny.novo Tiktok @jnov__ Substack @johnnynovo

We bought into the membership so we are looking to make more visits over the summer. We also missed out on the new Daniel Tiger exhibit and Bubs is a fan, so we will def be going sooner rather than later. Here's to many more Zoo trips!

It's a pretty small zoo, which has its pros and cons. Pros are that you can finish seeing everything pretty quickly. We probably spent less than an hour there, including the carousel. Cons are that there was not much to see. There were exhibits that listed certain animals, but they were nowhere to be found. I would say that if you're just looking for an activity to do with the kids, this would be a good option. But if you're looking to actually see any animals, you'll need to go to a bigger zoo.

We purchased tickets online, and there was no announcement as to which animals were not available for viewing. But if you buy tickets on site, there is a list of animals that you won't be able to see depending on the weather. We went around 60°+ weather, and we saw the mountain lions, condor / vultur (he was hiding), llamas (only from the train), rhea / ostrich, pigs, goats, horse, sheep, donkey, goose, buffalo & elk. The main attractions for my kids, alligators, the indoor birds with turtles exhibit, owls, macaw, and so many more were unavailable. Thankfully our kids are easily distracted & were just happy to be spending time with their cousins. But when that many animals are off exhibit, I definitely think the prices should be adjusted or the zoo should be free. Parking was easy to find at 10:45am on a Sunday morning, and the zoo was pretty empty.

"A big kid in a candy store" is the best way to describe my day trip to the Bronx Zoo. I made the…read moretwo-hour journey from Brooklyn to the Bronx because the region's premier zoo had long been on my bucket list, and it certainly did not disappoint. Getting there was straightforward: the 4 train to the Bronx followed by the BxM12 bus brought me right to the zoo. I did find the admission price a bit steep at $47 for a senior ticket, but once inside, it was easy to see where the money goes. The zoo is absolutely massive, yet laid out quite well. Better directional signage would have been helpful, but the pictograms worked reasonably well, and staff members were stationed throughout the grounds and always available to answer questions. One of the highlights was the accessible monorail, which provides a relaxing way to see a large portion of the zoo. There was also a shuttle service, though it did not appear to be wheelchair accessible. I appreciated the thoughtful signage letting visitors know when animals were outside if indoor habitats appeared empty. Another standout feature was the extensive use of large glass viewing areas, creating an immersive experience that made me feel remarkably close to the animals. They appeared calm, comfortable, and well cared for. Because it was a fairly hot day, spotting some animals required peering through bushes and dense vegetation, but that only added to the feeling of observing them in a more natural environment. The gorillas were the stars of the day for me. They were absolutely enormous, fascinating to watch, and truly awe-inspiring. One piece of advice: get there when the zoo opens at 10 a.m. It became crowded very quickly, especially with families and young children. As a power wheelchair user, navigating around excited kids darting in every direction could be challenging at times. That said, the zoo's pathways and routes are very powerchair-friendly. Visitors using manual wheelchairs may find the zoo more demanding simply because of how large and spread out the grounds are. After five hours of exploring, I left tired but happy. The day was enjoyable, adventurous, educational, and fascinating. Most of all, it reminded me what it feels like to be a big kid in a candy store. #BronxZoo #TysAdventures26 #BronxNY #

I enjoyed this day at the zoo. I took advantage of a free Wednesday (book your ticket the Monday…read morebefore) and saw pretty much everything I wanted to see. I did pay the extra $7 to go to the Congo and see exactly one gorilla and one Okapi. The gorillas were actually more readily visible outside the special Congo exhibit. But the exhibit itself was kinda cool. I am a big walker so the 3+ miles I tracked on my fitness app were no problem, but I could see how this would be harder for families with small children. I did feel like I was backtracking a lot because of the way the park is laid out. The animal enclosures are BIG. And right now many of them seem to be a bit overgrown with spring vegetation. While this is great for the animals, I didn't really feel up close with many of the exhibits. I used a lot of zoom on my camera. Some highlights - the peacocks roaming about. You will hear them, but if not, they tend to hang around Soma Village. The reptile pavilion featured a lot of cool snakes. I also enjoyed the World of Birds exhibit. Père David deer - the zoo is a big breeder of this threatened species and there were 5 fawns in the enclosure playing together. Disappointments - did not see any tigers, the red panda was also well hidden. I know the zoo does a lot of great things for wildlife conservation, but I feel like I missed some of that explanation. At smaller zoos there have been volunteers or docents roaming about to talk about the animals - oftentimes unscripted - so I've learned about things like Species Survival Plans (SSPs) and how zoos manage breeding programs by trading siblings with other zoos so there is not species inbreeding. Getting there: take the 5 train to 180th street. Straight shot down 180th then a right on Boston and you will see the "A" Asia gate. I am rounding up to 4 stars but would probably give it 3.5. Not my most favorite zoo, but worth another visit!
