I am absolutely not a herbal enthusiast or an avid tea drinker, so this purchase took about a week of contemplation and going back and forth on what I wanted and where to go. I finally Googled "apothecary" yesterday and Green Wisdom popped up! I decided to take a quick field trip during my lunch break and was immediately welcomed by friendly faces and the most amazing smells. I didn't catch the staff member's name, but they were AMAZING--so kind and approachable. I came in thinking I knew exactly what I wanted, and they thoughtfully suggested adding another herb to my mix. I'm so excited to try it! Everyone here was incredibly down to earth, and it was refreshing to know that even if you don't really know what you're doing (like me), they're genuinely there to guide you. I can't believe I didn't know about this store earlier. My friend told me about this establishment and decided to check it out. Wow! I'm so intrigued by lots of different herbs, natural remedies, plants, teas, medicines, tinctures, and more for holistic healing. I could be in the store all day browsing learning about all these interesting herbs. Staff were all so informatively friendly with lots of knowledge. I was in need of some loose tea which helped me to calm my anxiety. Staff prepared a mixture of herbs into a bag from the store apothecary right in front of you. Prices on every item in the store were at a decent price. I wanted to buy so many things, but will have to revisit since it's located close by in downtown Long Beach. There are a number of crafts and accessories to help your wellness journey, but the best part of the store is the staff. The recommendations and discussion from Julie and her knowledgeable staff are truly a treasure. The owner also teaches workshops and herbology certifications on the weekends. So it does feel especially silly that I never wrote a review for Green Wisdom, given we've been there a *bunch* since they opened, for different things - I'm extremely happy to have such a good herbal shop near us. They have a *huge* menu of different herbs and things, that you can get just bagged up by itself, or made into tinctures, room sprays, etc (as appropriate), all for totally reasonable prices. And equally importantly, they're also experts at knowing exactly what everything is *for*, so if you come in with, say, a specific type of pain, they'll make you a tincture blend for it, and it'll probably help! Everyone we've talked to there (including the owner, more often than not) has been *super* knowledgeable, and just, super *excited* to help people find what they're looking for. (Whether it's for health, for tea, to make your house smell good, or occasionally, even herbs we need for recipes! Obviously it isn't specifically a culinary-focused list, but it is a giant list of herbs, many of them edible :D.) They also have a bunch of great craft candles, a bunch of great incense, different pre-made blends of things for different purposes, some great herbals teas, smokeable blends for different purposes, stuff for your hair and your skin, etc. It's not a large shop, but they cover a lot of ground. They even carry a variety of sizes of empty spray and dropper bottles for your own use (I coopted a few of those for my home bar use - and a couple of their all-natural, supposedly "digestif" bitters, too!) They also have a small herbal vendor market on Saturday once a month that's a lot of fun, with various rotating free classes on different subjects. Notably, if you're a foodie (you probably are, if you're here), yesterday I went to their first in a series of tea classes (which finally got me to get of my butt and write this review), wherein their resident tea expert is going to go through each style of tea (this month was white tea, next month will be green, and so on). Drank some really cool, interesting teas, and learned a lot about white tea! Might have to check out more of the classes next time, but I'm definitely planning on going to all of the tea classes if I'm around. Really glad we have this place in our neighborhood! read more

Charming, small business located in an easy-to-find spot. Had most of everything I needed, and the list of dried herbs sold provided to me was very helpful for finding what I needed! There were a lot of interesting little trinkets that I didn't need, but definitely tempted me to spend more money. It's pretty far from where I live, but I would come back again! Great spot for witchy and pagan needs alike. The only complaint I have about this business is that customer service was a bit cold to me - I didn't feel very welcomed by the person working there. The pamphlets and posters attached to the corkboard next to the front door definitely made me feel safe in there, though; it's a great place for those who may be currently persecuted by the current administration. read more

Absolutely loved this place. The shop is super organized and clean. The staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I was looking for some herbs for a bath ritual and was helped right away. I was able to find everything I needed. There was one herb they did not carry. Julie got on the phone right away to see if another shop carried the herb. Unfortunately they too were out of it. She then suggested a local market where I was able to find the herb. I called my friend right away to tell her about this place. Kelly and Rekara were amazing! A dear friend recommended this store to me while I have been navigating anxiety/depression and wanting to stop taking prescription medicines before I got too deep in. I went in here and met Kelly first, who was so attentive and I could just see the wheels turning as she listened while I described my experience. She was so thorough in explaining why she was choosing each component of a custom loose leaf tea blend she was making me. She was also so helpful in recommending a few tinctures, and providing thorough instructions on when, how, and how much to take. While I had her ear, I began to talk about my son's eczema and respiratory problems. In comes Rekara! As they discussed a custom bath mix for my son, I showed them LabCorp bloodwork of all his environmental allergies. Kelly and Rekara were both SO well versed in their field, that they knew exactly what to leave out based on the plant relationships between his active allergies and herbal remedies. Rekara triple checked the list as she made the bath mix and a tincture for him. It truly was like talking to two doctors - except these ones listen, chat, and don't rush through your "appointment." I haven't stopped singing their praises to anyone who will listen, and I have a running mental list of ailments to get their input on. I can't recommend this team enough. read more

If you are a budding plant geek and want to learn more about plant medicine and medicine making - clinical Herbalism - traditional western Herbalism then check out Julie James. I took her 6 week course on Herbal Healing for WOMBYN last spring while I was in another herbal apprenticeship program elsewhere. Julie James blew my mind with her knowledge and as soon as her enrollment opened for her one year apprenticeship program, I jumped at it. I wanted to expand my herbal studies, having focused on folk medicine rooted in the wise woman Tradition, I wanted to learn more and dive deeper in herbal medicine. Julie is amazing and her apothecary is wonderful. Stop by check out her selection of plant books, herbal remedies and more. She holds weekly classes and special courses aside of her one and two year apprenticeship programs. She is such a wonderful mentor and is active in the herbal community, speaking at events like the Terra Vita Herbal Symposium & Good Medicine Confluence. She came highly recommended to me by Herbalist Jim McDonald when I spoke to him about taking his herbal energetics course in Michigan. I actually wanted to commute for the span of four months to take his course and he suggested based on knowing how difficult it could be getting there that I seek Julie James. I'm so glad that he pointed her my way as did a friend who had taken her course and the current teacher from another herbal program that I was in. If you want to learn about Herbalism and not the woowoo stuff then you will find your cup will spill over with knowledge that Julie speaks! She's amazing and makes amazingly yummy medicine!
