We spent a couple of nights here during the off-season and enjoyed it very much. Although the room was a bit small, it was comfortable. The pool, hot tub, and sauna were welcoming as well. And we pretty much had it all to ourselves due to it being off-season. They provide a free tea and cookie hour from 4:00-5:00, but I would not recommend it. They need to offer organic teas and better cookie choices in our opinion. The staff were so very nice and offered a lot of advice about local businesses. Established in 1833, this historic hotel is exactly what you'd think a hotel would be back in the good ol' days. I'm sure all the creaks and squeaks have a story to go along with them. It even boasts a super old school phone on the first floor. Our room had a fluffy four post bed and I loved all the sitting rooms in the main floor. Tons of character here! Complimentary Green Mountain coffee and tea available in their lobby 24/7 was welcome and a nice touch. There's also a pool and spa here, which we didn't even have time to have a lookie loo. The front desk is extremely short staffed, like literally one person (maybe another half coming and going), helping everyone check in or check out during peak times AND answering phones. In my last life, I've worked at the front desk of a major hotel chain and these are, for the most part, two separate jobs. All in all, had a nice (very short) stay here and despite the slow service, I still would have rated 4/5 overall. So why the low rating? We had a planned two night stay here, but Mother Nature had different plans in store for us. Yup, we got caught in the floods in Montpelier, half an hour from Stowe, and they had closed all roads for an estimated 1-3 days. We spent the night in the back of a car at a truck stop. I contacted the hotel multiple times throughout this chaos and was ultimately redirected to reservations (then closed). TLDR: I usually book my independent hotel accommodations through a third party because I have status. The Green Mountain refused to refund the first night even though they did for every other guest who booked directly with the hotel (per the front desk). I understand we were 45 minutes after the cancellation period, but from my first phone call to them, I was absolutely within the cancellation time frame. To add insult to injury, I kept being brushed off by the front desk to check in early in (11am) on what would have been our second night. Well, if I paid for it, shouldn't I technically get to "check in" anytime the second day? The answer is either a) they re-booked the room and double dipped, so it wasn't ready or b) the front desk didn't listen to my situation to begin with and just put me on the back burner, or c) both. Anyway, I was not happy and no one at the front desk would either help or escalate the matter, which put a bad taste in our mouth for the one short night we were there. An overall great experience. I love small, cozy stays whenever I take trips around the country. This felt authentically like Vermont. Not overly, unnecessarily luxurious. It was cozy and fun. It was an older hotel with several buildings. It was like being in an old Victorian home. The reception was great, Kirkland was very welcoming and gave us all the necessary information to get around the hotel and the local area. The beds were exceptionally comfortable and warm. The temperatures in the area were between 75-83 while we were there and the room stayed comfortable the whole time. We were in a room that faced Main Street and it was noisy because of the traffic traveling on Main. I found turning on the fan at night helped with the noise. The room was perfect except for that. It had a fireplace that turned on with a flick of the switch. Be careful in the bathtub/shower. It is a huge step in a jacuzzi tub to take a shower and the back of the tub was extremely slippery. This hotel is in the middle of everything on Main Street and harkened us back to the days of old. I would recommend this hotel if you find yourself staying in Stowe, VT. read more

I feel indifferent about this property. The staff were nice, sometimes were snarky with responses. For example, I asked a front desk associate if the property had any refillable water stations, and she said "around here, we drink out of the tap." That's fine; however, her response delivery was belittling made me feel that I should've known that you can drink out of the tab. I know that The Whip is a separate business yet attached to GMI, the food was abysmal. Tasteless, delayed, and the staff were quick to get me in and out instead of allowing me time to enjoy. Update January 2022 - The Green Mountain Inn is still our home away from home in the lovely quaint town of Stowe, Vermont.   Even after we stayed at the Von Trapp Lodge over the summer, we had to return here. It's in the main part of town, the service staff goes above and beyond, plus it's very clean, detailed and kept up to date. (Unfortunately Trapp only has the huge outdoor acreage as their claim to fame, otherwise the Trapp lodge is run down and the staff are often rude & grumpy at best - and it's severely overpriced for what you get). Anyway, back to Green Mountain, where we visit often:  winter, summer, spring & fall. The inn is very quaint beautifully decorated with old New England charm and style. They recently newly renovated many of the common areas and enclosed the front porch. Kudos! The rooms have extremely comfortable beds, well appointed. They provide Gilchrist & Soames of London bath toiletries, good strong shower heads, plus some rooms have Jacuzzis and fireplaces. The location is in walking distance to many shops, cafés and great hiking & recreational paths. The hotel has an outdoor fire pit in the backyard to gather around on chilly evenings with a lovely glass of wine. The restaurant on the premises: The Whip Bar & Grill serves regional American cuisine. Prices are very reasonable. Plus during this era of Covid they have opened a very convenient 'Take-Out' window which was necessary with the onslaught of Omicron. Everything about this place is perfect- right downtown. Great rooms and the restaurant is fantastic!

Visited Feb 22-25. Wow, nearly everything we could possibly experience here has been wonderful in particular the breakfast, our wait staff every day, the afternoon tea and cookies, the staff member who chatted with us at checkout. The suite in the Mansfield was great. We used the charging station without issue. The fitness center locker room area was good to have. It is a high traffic so maybe a little awkward to workout with families entering and leaving. Regardless, a great experience overall and will recommend and look to return. read more

18 on Main Restaurant, went for lunch, charming interior, we got there early good thing because it started raining, then got really busy. Hostess needs an attitude adjustment, she is sullen & non communicative. ( And it was a conversation going on in the ladies room amongst all the patrons). Apparently they were short staffed, which seems to be a common theme with this hotel. Once we were seated our waitress was efficient, but not friendly. The food was great, we had the soup & sandwich combo. We tried the corn chowder ( their specialty) which was excellent. We had tuna & BLT all were great on a very tasty sandwich bread. I'll start with the positives - the staff was lovely, the food at breakfast and dinner was good, the grounds are very nice. We enjoyed the massage, sitting by the fire pit, and relaxing in the lounge chairs. The pool was pretty packed with kids so we didn't even bother but it looks nice. However, our room was so disappointing. I looked through all of the pictures on the website and Yelp and none of the rooms looked like the one we checked in to. It was small and hot. You have to be a contortionist to use that tiny bathroom. But the worst part was being above the restaurant with the loud, I guess AC units, right outside the window. They roared all night long and when we tried opening the windows, our room immediately filled with the smell of steak. It's yummy but not for a room fragrance. My only recommendation is that if you come here, request any room other than 239. They should probably just turn this into a utility room so no guest has to deal with the noise and smell. read more

My wife and I were taking a pre foliage trip through NH and VT and a relative had recommended we stay here. Centrally located, the hotel seemed a little "tired "as we made our way to the room. But once in there, it was really very good. Comfortable, charming, complete with all amenities, to include fireplace. Its just what you would imagine if you were to paint a picture of a cozy New England Inn. Bed was comfortable and room was quiet. And the restaurant in the hotel was quite good and certainly convenient. I imagine its quite busy during ski season, but it is a lovely place to stay anytime. Count yourself fortunate if you book a night here. read more

We loved our stay. The location is perfect and the room was awesome. Having a place to eat within the Inn made it even better. We had 2 great dinners at the Whip and both our breakfasts at 18 Main were outstanding. Jane, our waitress at 18 Main is the best waitress we have ever had. Jane is a real gem and is always moving, always smiling and takes such good care of her customers that you have to go back and you have to ask for Jane. One final item and that is parking, the Inn has plenty of parking which is hard to find in Stowe. read more

The hotel part is good and they have the heated pool but the breakfast staff was rude

This was the nicest and largest place we stayed during our seven day trip in NH and VT for leaf season. The front desk guy was super ice and helpful. That said, there were still a few issues that made me not give 5 stars (I would give 3.5 if I could) We stayed in a Deluxe King room (#704) and it was roomy! It had a cubby with a refrigerator, coffee maker , wine glasses and an opener, which were very welcome. We were also close to an ice machine. And the coffee shop on Main street was very convenient as well. There was a couch and desk, so I could be comfortable when on my laptop. There were also an ample amount of comfortable pillows, which is usually an issue in rooms. However, the heat didn't work unless you turned on the gas fireplace. So it was either 62 degrees or way too hot. We had to turn the fireplace on at bedtime and were burning up in the middle of the night. There was a jacuzzi tub, which we didn't use. Maybe we should have because the shower was so small that you could barely turn around. And there was only one 2' x4' mirror in the entire huge room. Those things might seem petty, but for 400+ a night, make a difference. The main issue we had was noise. Room 704 is in the front of the The Mill House building and the main door was right outside our door. Every time it opened (starting at 7am, there was a s-w-e-a-k, then a SLAM!) over and over and over. Perhaps if the door had a soft-close, it wouldn't have bothered us so much. One morning we had a Trek Cycling group right outside our window (from 7:10am-8:45am) talking loudly with no regard that there might be folks inside sleeping. The windows are old, no where close to insulated (thus the cold temp inside), and you could hear every little noise. In a closing note, The restaurant WHIP was fabulous! I highly recommend making a reservation there. I will review that separately. read more

WORST customer service ever! Booked a specific room and received a call a few days later saying they gave it to someone else. Matt and Jessica were rude and Lynne the front desk manager was not equipped to be in her position. Another incident that occurred was at the Whip, their hotel restaurant. I made a reservation 6 months before my arrival and had the email to prove it. The day of our reservation, the host told us he had nothing under our name despite us just receiving a text stating our dinner reservation was in 30 minutes. I found most of the non-housekeeping staff to be pompous snobs. They have no issue bumping people for those with money. Never again will I stay or recommend this hotel. read more

Since it's Thanksgiving, should I be understanding or should I expect what I am paying in advance (non-refundable) for according to the website? I decided to get out of Boston for Thanksgiving and took a ride to Stowe VT. In my search of the area I found Green Mountain Inn, seemed accommodating, from good restaurants, a little of everything and in the middle of everything. Apparently, Whip isn't serving a full menu and the staff of the Inn was very unwelcoming and not very friendly. I probably should be understanding since it is Thanksgiving day but like I said in the beginning I payed in advance (non-refundable) based upon what I saw on the website and I didn't get everything fully offered. I couldn't even order dinner from the main dining room and eat in my room. I certainly know how I felt being there and would rather have asked for a refund, get back in my car and drive home than staying there the 1 night. read more

Somewhat loooong overdue review, so i'll keep it brief and to the point. After researching 23094324 Inn's in Vermont - we finally decided on this one. Gorgeous heated pool & jacuzzi for the winter time (we came over the Christmas holiday last Dec.) Beyond pleasant staff, stunning scenery, and last but not least... the most convenient location for walking around town for all of your needs/wants. Spa & Gym.. Concierge service all onsite... you get the picture... Check-in was a breeze, Luxury Room - beautifully appointed room with a fireplace.. large enough of an Inn to explore and not feel overly cramped. Updated room/property, but never looses the old charm we come to love and crave from an Inn. Get your bearings, and grab a drink at the Whip Bar, orrrr better yet, grab a few drinks after check-in, then have fun trying to find your bearings and explore more... maybe stumble through the snow into the pool ( I swear I didn't do this ) your call. Loved the fire place and Jacuzzi in the room! Liked the space and the feel. Loved the whip bar and grill on the premises. Put a separate review in for that. Breakfast was good , not great but had a bit of selection. Nearby other little shops , but with the snow, and some of the turns , not somewhere a regular stroller can go. Maybe the Bob's would have worked nicely here. We stayed in the club house and getting into the place required stairs , no elevator. For us no problem but harder when u have a baby going up and down without an elevator. Hubby loved the place and closeness to the mountain to ski but also located near other stuff post ski. Stopped in after visiting Norwich. Warm and friendly front desk staff. The room was incredible. Large jetted tub, fireplace and plenty of room. Enjoyed the year round pool and hot tub. Nice hotel in the heart of town. Great location in walking distance to restaurants, the market & some shops. The beds were comfortable with good quality sheets and pillows. The hotel is very old but has been renovated while still keeping its original charm. The jacuzzi tub also has a shower but you have to pull on the faucet to turn it on (I thought it was broken, lol). My husband loves old hotels. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to sleep, especially with a cemetery across the street. Spooky but I slept just fine. Tea, cookies and brownies are served at 4:30 pm every day. The brownies were very good. They also served hot cider. Great place to stay if you'd like to stay in town but you need a car to get to the mountain to go skiing so make sure you rent one. read more

Nice stay. LOCATION - Convenient to be in heart of downtown, and ability to walk to restaurants, coffee shops & stores. Excellent spa for massages across the street. COMFORT - Our room was clean. Beds were comfortable. Surprised they did not offer bars of soap, or botles of water in the room. We rented a suite and that is a touch that we did expect. We were on first floor and could hear footsteps above & voices outside (with windows being closed) so that was another thing that surprised us as we were in a new building & not the main inn. STAFF - Friendly at front desk. I think they should have pointed out amenities (e.g. we did not know we had an in-room coffee maker until the day we left, it was hidden in a closet instead of out on a counter). Front desk also did not explain about heated pool or other activities. He did hand us a brochure - but again, I'm used to someone offering - hey here are some things to check out, etc. RESTAURANT ONSITE - The Whip - just OK - average - nothing awesome. Loved our stay here! This inn is located in a quaint old house with a beautiful interior that extends back into a relatively private street. The rooms were amazing, I would highly recommend the deluxe room with more space and a fireplace. While it was a little bit more expensive, coming home after a day of skiing to sit in front of the fire was well worth it. The room was spacious yet cozy and felt authentic to Vermont. We also really enjoyed the evening complimentary wine and board games, a lovely touch! The inn is located in the middle of the town which was great to walk to breakfast and dinner as well as just stroll and window shop. There are a lot of fancy dining options directly around the inn but a short walk away we're more affordable yet delicious options. The drive to the mountain was only about 15 minutes and we didn't experience much traffic- an easy way to get an early start! We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend too anyone coming to Stowe! read more

Husband and I decided to get away for the weekend and I booked this trips months in advanced. We have had the best time! The staff is friendly and the rooms are luxurious. It's located right in the heart of town, walking distance to everything you could want! We've had a lot of fun just waking around town, checking out the shops. It's beautiful with all the Christmas decorations. We enjoyed the breakfast in the morning and had tea and cookies during board game time. That was an awesome touch and I loved it! Quite a few people came and participated it seemed. I definitely can't wait to come back. We would love to come in the summer and get some hiking in, but it's also lovely in the winter. Would like to give this a better review because it is a cheming place in a great location but a place cannot be nice and not nice at the same time: pick one, Green Mountain Inn. First, the good. The classic styling inside and out includes properly-crafted trim, cabinets, molding, wainscoating and chair rails, masonry and stonework. The outdoor pool, jacuzzi, hot tub and fire pit area are great. The health club area that includes a gym, men's and women's locker rooms and an indoor jacuzzi and sauna are really nice. The common areas have nice furnishings. The layout is comfortable, or cozy, in keeping with its early New England theme. It is nice and convenient to have two on-site restaurants, one The WIP, which is very good and the other, who's name I don't know, which is average, although the service is friendly. The rooms are well-apponted and have coffee makers, refrigerators, televisions, safes, upholstered lounge chairs Terry cloth robes and extra pillows and blankets in the closets. Now the bad. My sheets should have been replaced some time ago. They were somewhat thin and pilled. I asked the cleaning staff to change my bed after day 2 and the next set was an improvement. The shower in the gym locker room never got warm and there were no towels available, half the time I used the elevator it smelled like a blown-out vacuum bag. Our first day the shower drain drained slow. There is no soap or lotion provided. Things kept tumbling out of the door of the fridge because it had a poorly-conceived retainer rod. The key card mechanism on the doors usually took a few or more swipes to go green. The little store is nice but was improperly stocked with beer. Also it provided no red bull - why not? The game room is nice to have but it have such an intolerable vacuum bag smell I couldn't stay in it for more than a few seconds; also no pinball or Mrs pac man. A Motel 6 is better than this dump. Could give zero stars if I could. The shower has the worst water pressure. The wallpaper is peeling. The beds are not comfortable. I get the historical idea but the floor is disgusting. Shocking especially since the rooms go for $300 A NIGHT! Not worth it. Stick to a good Hilton Hotel or Marriot ®.
