Egg cream soda (chocolate)
Ken C.

Take a step back in time at Green Line Apothecary when sodas were health tonics - what great fun this place is! I've often read in various mid-20th century reminiscences about egg creams, phosphates, and such tonics but never had a chance to try these by-gone soda fountain treats. Well, if you're in Wakefield, head on over to GLA and cool your heels at their comfy counter, admire their gorgeous tin-pressed ceiling, and watch them fulfill each order by hand. So we tried: a chocolate egg cream (very refreshing and rich), a lime rickey (also refreshing - this would be great on a hot summer day), and a chocolate phosphate (tangy and enlivening). All were thirst-quenching and revivifying after a long stroll about town and window-shopping - and fun! (The counter seating is especially conducive to striking up enjoyable casual conversations with other customers.) Their ice creams are also very good, rich and creamy - my daughters had a coffee ice cream shake and a chocolate sundae. Next time I'm going to have my benchmark fave: a chocolate ice cream soda! There is also a full-service pharmacy as part of GLA - and a section of retro-50's/60's toys and games which was a hoot to browse through.

Really had a wonderful time went down to use my free ice cream coupon at the soda fountain from the passport I had bought for Food finds of Rhode Island. Posted several pictures in this post of the inside and outside of this apothecary the next time I'm gonna be going to the one I believe it's in Warwick. The people in the leas were very friendly there we even took pictures with them and the ice cream sodas were amazing

I'm a huge fan of all things relating to the 50's (seriously, cast me as Frenchy in your production of Grease, everyone!), so our trip to the Green Line Apothecary today was just what the doctor ordered! This retro soda fountain / full service pharmacy is a blast from the past, and looks like somewhere the cast of Reefer Madness would be thrilled to hang out in. Belly up to the bar, and take your pick of a variety of house made sodas, next-level ice cream (the seasonal pick for March is made with real ginger!), and even quirky vintage treats like a tangy beverage called a phosphate. Fresh whipped cream, cherries, and sprinkles are complimentary, so go all out! It was especially refreshing to see that this stuff is the real deal - no aerosol cans at the Green Line! The soda jerk, the mid-century answer to a barista, makes everything on the menu fresh to order right before your very eyes. Tris was working the bar today when we went, and the friendly, engaging interactive nature of the experience was a highlight of the visit. Prepare to be dazzled by Tris's talent for throwing the scoops of ice cream in the air and catching them in the glass cups before they can fall on the floor. A treat for the eyes as well as the stomach! So cool! They also have paper hats that are essential to any Green Line soda fountain adventure - pop one on before you sit down, and take as many selfies as you want! For our inaugural visit, my boyfriend and I kept it simple with some housemade soda and coffee milk. I opted for the Diet Cola, which was a better and cleaner tasting answer to Diet Coke served in an adorable glass, and my boyfriend's coffee milk was a masterfully fresh tasting take on the Rhode Island classic. Prices are cheap, and quality is excellent. I would recommend this to anyone and everyone, and I literally cannot wait to return! A true hidden RI gem, and one of the best spots in the state!

What a sweet place! Beautiful products and a working pharmacy along with an ice cream soda bar. Clean & neat with lots of great choices for any kind of ice cream treat you may be looking for. Love the tables in the front windows or sitting at the bar, the kids can't wait to go back.

Their fountain sodas and ice creams are delicious, plus their inventory of products are unique and lots are locally sourced.

There was plenty of street parking close by. There were lots of flavors that caught me eye, but ultimately, I narrowed it down to the three I wanted to sample: Ginger, Brittle Brickley's, and peanut butter cup. I thought the ginger one was unique, but I was more impressed with the other two that it was voted off the island. Since you could only choose one flavor with the kiddie size ($4.99), we upgraded to small ($5.99) which allows for two selections. They don't have indoor seating, just an outside patio with chairs and tables, but since it was raining, it was not an option. Once someone handed us our ice cream at the side of the building, we walked back to our car to eat it. The ice cream is very creamy, not overly sweet, and lives up to the names of its flavors. The brittle brickley was a vanilla base with chunks of toffee or butterscotch. The chunks were light and small so not hard on the teeth at all. The peanut butter cup had a good amount of candy in it. For the quality of the ice cream and serving size, I thought the price was fair.

I developed a fondness for cherry ice cream when I was in London, though I don't know that that's what they're known for exactly, but I'd sampled a few cherry flavors at other locations and wasn't impressed. Parking is shared with the connecting stores, and we didn't have any issues finding a spot. There is a couple serving windows, but we decided to go inside since it was cold. We were the only patrons. The one scooper looked bored out of her mind as we looked at the flavors. I was excited to learn they serve Gifford's ice cream. I want to preface the review that I really wanted Campfire S'mores. It is my absolute favorite flavor from Gifford's. I could eat a whole tub at once. I scanned the freezer to find my beloved flavor and I was taken back. A few tubs are double stacked, with the new tub underneath a ripped open tub. My Campfire S'mores was in a very low ripped tub, looking wet, sad, and disappointing. I've never seen leftover ice cream look this wet. I was nervous and tried it, and my assumption was correct, a big NOPE. It was old and gross. Definitely not what this flavor should taste like. That was the moment where I didn't know if I could trust other flavors. I tried cotton candy, and it appeared okay. It looked and tasted as it should. I sampled I Scream For Cake... Seems fine, a little melted. When I asked to try one more, she said, "We're only allowed to give out three samples, sorry." Never at any ice cream shop have I been told about a sample limit, and definitely would have rather been told BEFORE I started sampling wet flavors. I was starting to lose all interest in this shop. I was afraid to get a cup of anything new, so I settled on I Scream For Cake. The boyfriend got Peanut Butter Pie. The awkward moment was when the scooper quickly placed his ice cream on the counter top and it fell over. She sighed loudly, threw it in the trash (I emphasis on threw), and started over. Oof. We ate our melted ice cream outside. The ice cream scoop was okay. The whole experience and interaction was not what I wanted. I hope they get colder freezers and toss the wet ice cream. Right now, I don't plan to return.

BEACH WEEK - Day Seven - Homeward Bound K…read moreBefore i.go,.I gotta give a quick shout-out to Daisy's Chicken and Ice Cream on Point Judith Road in Narragansett. This place is owned and operated (very well).by two lifelong friends and mere 21-year-old younglings, Adam and Donny. It's in a tuff spot; numbers of others have passed thru various tenancies with different ideas of how to accompany the farmstand creamie type ice cream business, but these two have somehow found the balance (imho). That balance includes not just the precisely focused menu and their astute assessment of a real need waiting to be filled; it also reflects the research, planning, work and personalities that are going to bring success. Adam and Donny have clearly done a lot of homework, not just with the business side, but culinary-wise. One does not just open a restaurant and hope for the best- especially with "real' (meaning, raw, scratch-prepared) product- even ice cream handling is scientific, and the scooping of it is a very precise maneuver with specific technics absolutely necessary. Whether Daisy's will establish a brand and grow, franchise, diversify, or just continue along as an exemplary demonstration of business acumen and personality profile to keep these kids happy just as it is, they have at least one customer who will keep coming back not just for the "Winter Blast" ice cream and the perfectly prepared chicken breasts not frozen patties), but out of a very strong fascination for observing and following whatever these two do into the future. If you know me- I am very judgemental of food service and Hospitality establishments, and I can be really critical. This place has me excited to stay with them!
