My first go at eating all-vegan and I have to admit I really enjoyed the food. I ventured in on a week night around 7pm and it wasn't busy at all so we grabbed a plate each and filled 'em up with buffet style vegan food. As soon as you're done choosing all your goodies you place your plate on a scale and pay by the weight. Staff aren't overly friendly or attentive so this is a good place if you want to go chill out and not be fussed over. I had a spring roll, curry puff, dumplings, broccoli, noodles with Chinese vegetables and a potato curry. Came here before watching a play in Newtown. My friend and I were starving so we decided to do buffet style, so we could eat quicker. Basically you just fill your plate and then they weigh it, and you pay for exactly what you want. I like this, but buffets can get a little bit dangerous in that sense. So my friend and I started piling things on our plate. I got a dim sim, some bbq pork, some crispy chicken, tofu, eggplant, veggies and chow mein. We also split a rice paper roll. My friend's dish ended up being about $19 and mine was $14. Overall everything was good, the stand outs were the bbq pork and crispy chicken. Some of the tofu dishes were just ok. My friend told me that this place doesn't use specific ingredients like onion, garlic or leek in their dishes because it can be harmful to the lungs, heart and liver, which I never knew. I think that's pretty cool. After dinner we got some tofu ice cream. My friend got coconut and I went for my favorite black sesame. Tofu ice cream is interesting. Green Gourmet is great news for vegos and coeliacs. Even though I'm neither, I still love it for a healthy lunch fix. The first restaurant opened in Mosman in 1989, which was followed by the Newtown restaurant in 1998 and one in St Leonards in 1992. Now the Newtown outlet has expanded to a Vegan's Choice Grocery shop next door, where you can buy plenty of take-home vegan products. The Chinese menu is 100% vegan, so there's no meat, dairy, garlic or onion in sight, and many of the dishes are wheat and gluten-free. Green Gourmet is open for lunch and dinner seven days. For entrees, I love the selection of steamed dumplings for just under $10. The shredded Beijing "mock duck" wrap is a bit of make-your-own fun, with vegies wrapped in a hand-made, traditional pancake. The chestnut sang choy bow for two is also a clear favourite. Soy mince (don't knock it 'til you've tried it!) blends with snowpeas, sweet corn, mushrooms and water chestnuts in crisp, chilled lettuce leaves. read more

I write this review with a HUGE HUGE apology to my family.... Last year I went through this Vegan phase after watching the documentary Earthlings. I was determined not to eat any animal product again.... Unfortunately for my family I went through this phase a few weeks before my birthday- which meant, that when it came to deciding what restaurant to go to, I picked a Vegan one - Green Gourmet.... Now I'm sure Vegan does not equal oily and tasteless, yet somehow is this eatery it did. I watched my poor meat eating family endure their tofu pseudo meat - swallowing it down, feigning enthusiasm..... now, I will say what my family couldn't because they were being polite.... this sucks! Veggies are delicious and when cooked well and with great flavours can be simply amazing. Unfortunately that was not the case with Green Gourmet. It seemed like their motto was the oilier the better. The reconstituted meats felt and tasted fake and all in all it was not fun.... I didn't stay Vegan for long after this meal and i'mnot blaming Green Gourmet for my lack of convictions - i just think if you're meant to specialise in a food - you should at least specialise! read more

This place has always been one of my favourites. I was honestly a bit sceptical about the idea of vegan yum cha at first but one visit was enough to convince me otherwise. I actually took a large group of non-vegetarians here and they all reported really enjoying the food which is a good sign. And we were pleased when our cost per person worked out to be significantly cheaper than other yum cha places we frequent. Their normal menu is really good too, and I like that they use a lot of different vegetables that are less commonly used in food found in Sydney. I am pretty big on onion/garlic etc. so for their food flavours to win me over without using those was pretty unexpected. Also I tried one of their vegan cheesecakes - passion fruit flavour - reluctantly as vegan cheese tends to gross me out, but it was actually my favourite cheesecake I have ever eaten, and I tend to get it whenever I go back. read more

Guilt-free icecream! Everytime I'm in the area, I stop by for a scoop of black sesame tofu icecream. It may not sound appetizing but it is delicious. They also have unique flavors like durian and goji berry. I haven't tried their restaurant food yet but I will eventually. read more

The buffet can range from pretty good to very disappointing, you never know which it will be. If you get there for dinner shortly after they open the various dishes will still retain an appealing level of heat, otherwise it can be tepid. Tepid food is not very appetising nor does it follow safety guidelines of keeping food either hot or cold. To enjoy this cuisine you have to really like gluten - which is the all-purpose bland food used to carry flavours that are supposed to resemble various meats. This can be stomach-churning to a life-long vegetarian who does not want to even know what various meats taste like, or even worse, feel like. But if you are not overly sensitive it is possible to enjoy the BBQ "pork", etc. The restaurant is popular and often crowded with Asian families. I would imagine that most are followers of the same religion - Taoism, which eschews garlic and onions, and alcohol. It is a distinctive cuisine, value for money, and if you select carefully can be healthy (i.e. don't fill up on rice, noodles, dumplings and spring rolls!). None of my non-vegetarian friends or family members have ever been enthusiastic after having been taken to this restaurant, so I would save it for your own pleasure. read more

They label their menu so you can find all the great gluten free options amongst the deliciousness. The staff are quick and efficient and don't take long to bring your food out. I am not a vegan, far from it in fact, but I have a vegan friend and we went here one night for her birthday. Green Gourmet is an interesting place. It is self serve and you pay for your food by the weight. Score for me because at times I tend not to be a very big eater. This happened to be the case on this particular night, not because I wasn't hungry but rather because I didn't find the food very inspiring. As Danielle L previously noted, the food was especially oily and bland, a contradiction to their name 'Green Gourmet'. Most of the food was cold, despite it sitting on hot plates for what was probably the better part of the day. Others ordered desert, but I just couldn't stomach it. And I don't think it is a problem with vegan cuisine because I am keen to visit other vegan restaurants with my friend, but I think it is the way that this restaurant has decided to execute it. The rave and hype of the green gourmet restaurant was overrated and incapable to live up to expectations of advanced taste yet the only positive was the customer service and the fact that it was easy to locate. The majority of the factors that encompassed our experiences were disappointing. First of all the the food was terrible, it was bland, tasteless and visually unappealing. Secondly the food quality and quantity was overpriced. Lastly at the very end they ripped us off as they overcalculated the price. Therefore in the end bestowing upon us a terrible experience! I would not recommend this terrible excuse of a restaurant to anyone, ever!!! read more

Some of the best mock-meat vegan food in Sydney. There is an elaborate buffet (lunch and dinner) or an a la carte menu. I recommend the mock duck, crispy chicken or calamari! They also have an awesome selection of raw cheesecakes and their tofu ice-cream is delish. They also have a grocery store next door stocked up with all kinds of yummy vegan essentials! I used to come here for dinner all the time way back around 2008, and have recently started revisiting. Yum cha is more or less not a thing if you're a vegetarian like me, so it was very novel to come to Green Gourmet's weekend one and be able to eat every dang dish brought out - with the caveat that if you didn't sit near the kitchen everything would get snapped off the tray before it came anywhere near you. Maybe that's changed? but back then it was a major drag and stopped me coming. Anyway, the buffet is great (it's pay per weight, and lunchtime is cheaper but I think the buffet is also reduced in variety then): they have a range of faux meat dishes and the "pork" buns are doughy and divine. Highly recommend the faux pork dish from the buffet, and something or other that's tied in a knot and tastes vaguely chicken-y with a chewy texture (I'm not selling it very well, huh. Trust me, it's delicious) - sometimes I pop in to get those two dishes in a takeaway container and throw them in my homemade work lunches through the week. This was my second time at this restaurant and I must say, I enjoyed the first time so much more, we ordered the spring rolls, they were really good. Sang choy bow also was tasty, bbq pork was ok, the fried eggplant parcels was not great and its usually one of my favs, the dumplings were ok as was the salt and pepper calamari, and we ordered other things but I cant even remember what it was which is probably a tell tale sign that i was not overly impressed by it, but my biggest dissapointment was the Singapore noodles, they had a strong curry flavor and were very dry, I pretty much ate steamed rice so i felt like I was getting my $30 worth as the bill came to $180 for 6 of us. I would probably go again being that my first visit was great and I remember I enjoyed everything I had and they have so much to offer on the menu, over 60 dishes, and I would try something different, being that I am not vegan, I suppose some things are an aquired taste and the food there is fresh and well prepared. read more
