A bit hipster above the typical Vietnamese vegetarian and vegan places. Food was very good with the soup dish sizable, tasty and most filling. Service is ok, seating a tad cramped but food worth a escape from th day walk, adventure in this neighborhood. Reminds me of the bit more trendy tad more upscale Au Lac's of Canberra. Very close to train station and bus stops making in and out very easy.

I was really impressed by this vegan Vietnamese place. Enough that I walked by other, less happening options to get there. It was absolutely packed for the duration of my visit, but the wait for food wasn't overly bad. I took a bit of a chance on trying a rendition of rendang, a much ballyhooed but not normally vegetarian curry. I was quite impressed with the flavor, spiciness, and satisfied with the portion size. The overall menu looked fantastic and diverse, even steering you away from fake meats if you prefer not. They had two dining rooms full of happy customers plus a decent takeout business going. If I were in this area, I'm quite confident I would be back regularly.

3.5 stars. I'll round up to 4 because the other existing reviews are on extreme ends of the spectrum, and it was good for Sydney. I came here tonight for dinner with my parents. A reservation is recommended because they were quite busy, and it was a Monday. First impressions: extremely noisy inside, very simple/casual decor, clean and a plentiful staff running around. Vietnamese vegan is white hot in Newtown. The menu is a big wooden book and divided by entrees and then types of mock meat (tofu, chicken, duck, fish etc), then noodles/Pho dishes and chef's choice items. We ordered the taro rolls (to die for), curry puffs (good with an interesting coconut flavour) and dumplings (tasty, sauce with a kick) for appetizers. For mains we ordered the plum duck, satay tofu with vegetables and faux chicken with coconut curry sauce. All mains were good except somewhat simple. The vegetables in each were broccoli, cauliflower, carrot and celery only. I was expecting perhaps something more exciting/exotic such as mushrooms or Asian greens. My dad also thought the sauce was a little thin. That said, everything was very tasty and made with good ingredients. My favourite thing overall was the the taro rolls. We didn't order any of the pho or more traditional Vietnamese dishes. The main reason being that noodle soups would have been too difficult to share. I checked out all the tables around us and the Pho dishes looked pretty good - I also spotted asian greens, bean shoots and fresh mint. I think if I were to come back next time I'm in Sydney I would definitely want to try one of these. The service was very efficient and the food came out quickly. It seemed as if all staff took orders and brought out food so we encountered at least 6 or 7 employees while we were there. They were varying in their customer service skills. One lady was very helpful in getting me the wifi password while another simply said 'I don't know it' and didn't bother to find out. Some staff could provide insight into the dishes or answer questions but others appeared to know nothing. We asked for cutlery twice but when they didn't bring it my mum went and got it herself. I can see how you would have a different experience depending on which staff you encountered. Even though consistency was off they were very attentive and always around to be flagged down - and that is not always the case with Sydney's no-tip culture. Other things to mention: the bathroom at the back was clean and they'd made the effort to turn the hallway leading to it into a spa-like space with stones on the ground (cute), the alcohol on offer includes a few wines and beers by the glass, and our bill for three people came to just under $90. And although I said it before, it was extremely noisy inside. I would happily return.

This is a fantastic vegan restaurant in the heart of newtown…read more You've got 3 options: - buffet lunch for $8 / 500 grams - buffet dinner for $14 / 500 grams - order off the menu The buffet is awesome as you can try a whole range of vegan dishes (like 'fish' fillets, 'pork' buns, 'chicken' stir fry etc) and you just pay by the weight of your plate. If you have your eye on something special from the very extensive menu then you can add that on to your order. The food is great, very flavour some with a range of interesting textures! Don't expect amazing decor or stellar service - but you're coming for the awesome vegan food and to enjoy the company of your dinner mates! Also pop in next door and you can buy a range of vegan faux meat, pies, curries and even amazing desserts.

As soon as you're done choosing all your goodies you place your plate on a scale and pay by the weight. Staff aren't overly friendly or attentive so this is a good place if you want to go chill out and not be fussed over. I had a spring roll, curry puff, dumplings, broccoli, noodles with Chinese vegetables and a potato curry. There was food made to look like pork and tofu was everywhere but I didn't feel like I was eating vegan as it was full of flavour and not what I expected. There also happens to be a cat that sits in the hallway towards the kitchen/bathroom so if you're into that sort of thing...

So.9 is a new Vietnamese place that opened on Danks Street in Waterloo…read more Their theme is a shared menu, and they have different stations for all types of Vietnamese food like pho, spring rolls, pancakes, salads, and the like. The decor is pretty nice and it totally looks the part, it's just too bad the food fails to deliver. Came with 3 others and we got Vietnamese milk coffee, pho, Vietnamese pancakes, and salads. The coffee was alright, it was just OK at best. The pho was pretty disappointing to say the least, the broth tasted like they used a pho stock cube instead of real bones but I can't verify. The pancakes (banh xeo) had bean sprouts that should have been slightly cooked but were just raw A lot of the food looked the part, it just didn't taste the part. Also for the price you pay at $14+ for pho or $15+ for banh xeo...just go to Marrickville or Cabramatta instead.

We learn that SO9 translates to number 9 in Vietnamese. The number 9 is a lucky number and reflects the luck involved in the journey of the restauranteurs, from Vietnam go opening this restaurant. SO9 has an inspired existence, presenting some delicious Vietnamese street food and traditional dishes.Decor wise, the restaurant has an industrial modern feel that is common in many restaurants these days, with neon signage, polished concrete floors and exposed brick which is softened by lighter wooden toned furniture and a number of indoor plants. With an open kitchen allowing for the lovely aromas of the food to fill the restaurant. The staff are also friendly and attentive, we felt very welcome here.SO9 is also a licensed venue with their bar serving a range of beer, cider and wine. There's a range of popular Vietnamese non-alcoholic drinks including sugar cane juice, as well as coffee and milk tea. There are also a bunch of exotic slushies, making for a tough choice. Unfortunately they were out of the coconut, guava and lime. The consolation of coconut lychee and pineapple was very good, there is also the option of boozing these up with vodka or white rum.The assorted rice paper rolls at $15 were fantastic, sizeable, with fresh ingredients and plenty of flavour. In fact, the best we have come across, this was a great start to the meal. The salt and pepper cuttlefish at $15 is also a great snacking option, especially with the dipping sauce, very moreish and we polished this off in no time. The Vietnamese savoury crisp pancakes bahn xeo is always a favourite of ours. We were interested in the crab bahn xeo, but not to be this time, unfortunately this too a popular item that was sold out. In turn the pork and prawn Bahn Xeo was what we had in this visit and at a price of $17, it was certainly generous as it was huge, served in traditional manner with mint, and lettuce to wrap it up and a sweet dipping sauce for added flavour. With their bahn mi baguettes at only $2 made fresh a serve of this a must and was well utilised mopping up the extremely tasty sauce that came with the roast duck $27. This roast duck was an absolute highlight, a beautiful sweet sauce and moist meat, served atop white rice.We also decided on an interesting and tasty stir fry rice noodle dish with Crab, pork, prawn roe. $25 Bahn pho xao cua rieu, flavoursome and very colourful. This is a high quality Vietnamese option in the Danks Street dining precinct of Waterloo, a definite option for a quck bahn mi lunch, to get a good Vietnamese meal or on cold winter nights, we will return to try some of the soup on the menu.
