Loved the food here. My laksa was excellent. The vegan prawn crackers were delicious but missing a dipping sauce. I wish they had some satay sauce or sweet chili sauce to go with it. the food is AMAZING. We shared steamed dumplings (which tasted good, but came out lukewarm), lemongrass chicken, eggplant claypot & veggies & tofu in garlic sauce. My sister had the tofu & veg pho. Everyone was happy! the setting is a definitely more vegan hipster vibe than other Vietnamese places, with a few "veganism is magic" touches they get only 4 stars because the service was salty. their door & websites says they are open until 10:30pm. they accept 9:30 reservations... but if you show up at 9:35 (as we did) they try to turn you away & say they close at 10??? then they were just kind of rude. PS- tons of food delivery people were picking up after 10, so they were definitely still cooking. read more

A bit hipster above the typical Vietnamese vegetarian and vegan places. Food was very good with the soup dish sizable, tasty and most filling. Service is ok, seating a tad cramped but food worth a escape from th day walk, adventure in this neighborhood. Reminds me of the bit more trendy tad more upscale Au Lac's of Canberra. I was really impressed by this vegan Vietnamese place. Enough that I walked by other, less happening options to get there. It was absolutely packed for the duration of my visit, but the wait for food wasn't overly bad. I took a bit of a chance on trying a rendition of rendang, a much ballyhooed but not normally vegetarian curry. I was quite impressed with the flavor, spiciness, and satisfied with the portion size. The overall menu looked fantastic and diverse, even steering you away from fake meats if you prefer not. They had two dining rooms full of happy customers plus a decent takeout business going. If I were in this area, I'm quite confident I would be back regularly. read more

3.5 stars. I'll round up to 4 because the other existing reviews are on extreme ends of the spectrum, and it was good for Sydney. I came here tonight for dinner with my parents. A reservation is recommended because they were quite busy, and it was a Monday. First impressions: extremely noisy inside, very simple/casual decor, clean and a plentiful staff running around. Vietnamese vegan is white hot in Newtown. The menu is a big wooden book and divided by entrees and then types of mock meat (tofu, chicken, duck, fish etc), then noodles/Pho dishes and chef's choice items. We ordered the taro rolls (to die for), curry puffs (good with an interesting coconut flavour) and dumplings (tasty, sauce with a kick) for appetizers. For mains we ordered the plum duck, satay tofu with vegetables and faux chicken with coconut curry sauce. All mains were good except somewhat simple. The vegetables in each were broccoli, cauliflower, carrot and celery only. I was expecting perhaps something more exciting/exotic such as mushrooms or Asian greens. My dad also thought the sauce was a little thin. That said, everything was very tasty and made with good ingredients. My favourite thing overall was the the taro rolls. We didn't order any of the pho or more traditional Vietnamese dishes. The main reason being that noodle soups would have been too difficult to share. I checked out all the tables around us and the Pho dishes looked pretty good - I also spotted asian greens, bean shoots and fresh mint. I think if I were to come back next time I'm in Sydney I would definitely want to try one of these. The service was very efficient and the food came out quickly. It seemed as if all staff took orders and brought out food so we encountered at least 6 or 7 employees while we were there. They were varying in their customer service skills. One lady was very helpful in getting me the wifi password while another simply said 'I don't know it' and didn't bother to find out. Some staff could provide insight into the dishes or answer questions but others appeared to know nothing. We asked for cutlery twice but when they didn't bring it my mum went and got it herself. I can see how you would have a different experience depending on which staff you encountered. Even though consistency was off they were very attentive and always around to be flagged down - and that is not always the case with Sydney's no-tip culture. Other things to mention: the bathroom at the back was clean and they'd made the effort to turn the hallway leading to it into a spa-like space with stones on the ground (cute), the alcohol on offer includes a few wines and beers by the glass, and our bill for three people came to just under $90. And although I said it before, it was extremely noisy inside. I would happily return. read more

Love this place!! Most everything is good prices. Few items are pricier but delicious so it's worth it. Many many items. They have vegetable protein, either tofu or soy nuggets or wheat nuggets. Deserts too. All vegan. Here's me eating 'chicken' satay. read more

The food here is expensive and hardly Thai at all. There was minimal effort in the flavors. The vegan abalone resembled more flavorless rubber than seafood. The cashews were burnt and backed up by large chunks of insipid old vegetables. read more

Don't judge a book by its cover, or your hipster friends recommendations. Yes I understand it's vegan and trendy but in terms of a good hospitality experience this is quite horrible. On Monday 20th of march me and three other friends went to this restaurant and we each ordered our meals. I ordered the duck with chilli basil leaves. We ALL ordered a small rice with our meals. I had to wait upward of 45 minutes for my meal (it's not like they have to cook meat it's processed soy product). They forgot about my order and they knew the whole time and offered me a dish which was not my meal. The end product that I got given was not very nice and mainly because of the next issue of rice, there wasn't enough. They gave us one very small bowl of rice for the table to share? They did not top up the bowl. And also we ordered one of those bowls each. Rice is not expensive, and collectively as a table we paid $10 for rice and were given literally one cup of rice out of a rice cooker I dont even want to think about how much money was wasted on this on our part. The biggest issue was with payment. I ordered my meal which was 16.50 and then rice which adds up to $19 if you do the math. Simple stuff. I ended up paying $20! The absolute worst part was that they charged my friend (who is from Canada and fifteen years old) $27 for his $16.50 meal!!! He can't afford that. This place serves average quality food, overcharges, and then actually rips you off under this guise of new age vegan cuisine where people think a place so ethical and humanitarian would never take advantage of their customers. It's still a business but a very unprofessional one at that. Definitely save your time and money and go somewhere else and tell your vegan friend that maybe you'll go there next time. ;) read more

Fairly priced. Got the yellow noodles with "duck." It tastes amazing. Way better than I expected. We got there at 930ish pm on a Wednesday and the place was still packed, which we figured is a good sign. It can be a little lacking in customer service when they're busy but the staff tries their best to take care of their customers. It's a Vietnamese vegan restaurant so of course they have pho as well. I've eaten here a few times and have always enjoyed the food, but I haven't been crazy about the service (and really, I'm not that fussy about service). I went there last night and had an experience I thought I'd share. We got there at 6 and it took about 5-10 minutes for them to take our order, which was fine. The place wasn't that busy. Then a few other people started arriving, ordering and getting their meals. We asked once if there was any problem with our order and didn't really get a response 'I'll check'. Then asked again ten mins later and also didn't get a response. After an hour and ten minutes of waiting we needed to leave to get to a show we had tickets for. I told them we were leaving, to be courteous and explained why and they really didn't seem to care. Very little apology at all. Food is pretty good, but that's not much good if it never actually arrives. read more

I usually always go to Golden Lotus for Lunch with friends and even the odd dinner. Seating is sometimes hard to get during dinner (expect a 30min waiting time) and I find that the seating is very 'intimate' with other diners. Though, the food here is amazing. If you're a first time diner I definitely suggest trying the vegan drumsticks entree. Honestly the best thing ever. My go-to main is the phnom phen which is amazing. Would definitely suggest this place to anyone...just make sure you plan ahead if for dinner. read more

I confess. We went back about three times in a week because we loved it so much. From the pho noodle soup garnished with fresh herbs to the colourful crisp Vietnamese pancake, the earthy rice hot pot and rich spicy rendang "beef" curry and delectable three bean che (crushed ice, red bean, lychee jelly and coconut milk), everything on the menu is absolutely mind blowing. The vermicelli salad with tofu and spring rolls or with pork skewers was a particular hit, smothered in sweet sour salty nuoc cham. I dined with extra-hard-to-please and staunch meat-eaters one of whom stopped, chopsticks half way to his mouth, and said (too loudly) "This is bl***dy delicious for vegan food!" They say there's no pleasing everyone but Golden Lotus does. I went to check this new vegan place in Newtown and was very excited about it. Inside was very nice, clean and colourful. I ordered a wonton soup and vegetable dumplings and I said to the girl to be sure that there is no any onion nor garlic in, as I can't eat those. As soon as I tried my wonton soup I tasted some onion. I asked the girl is there any onion in, and she said there was no. I asked is it anything from the onion/garlic family like chives and she said no. I said to her that I absolutely can't eat those as I will be sick and she was very certain that there is none of those in. I should of listen to my senses and stop eating that soup right then. Instead I did eat the soup and afterwords I got massive indigestion and really struggled for hours to get rid of it. Also in dumplings that supposed to be veggies was just like browny paste, nothing reminding on any veggie I know. Or maybe it is some trick for kids that don't like eating veggies. Not sure. I am definitely never going to go again to this restaurant. But I gave one star for the ambiance, it is very inviting. read more
