An update to my review of April 2016: It has been over two years since Nathan and the Green Gallery Guys re-did our front yard, so here's an update. We went with young plants to save money, and kept a lot of existing plants that had been struggling from neglect through the years. Thanks to the drip system that Nathan recommended, the aforementioned old plants are doing great (for the first time!) and overall the garden needs very little maintenance. A couple of things died, but that's to be expected, I think, and the surrounding plants filled in nicely. We're happy with the way the garden looks and, as mentioned, it's been very little work to maintain.

3 inches out of square. making laying the stone work impossible

What an awful company to work with. We hired them to build a deck with drainage and electrical work. It was clear right away that the owner, forman and onsite crew were not on the same page. sloppy work starting with a out of square foundation and forgetting to add utilities before the pour led to constant discussions and workarounds with onsite crew only to be changed by owner/forman after I left the site. Lots of items in the contract left undone. My personal tool went missing, and it took weeks to get them to come back to fix issues and return the tools. Nathan the owner called me a liar. Who does that to a customer? Now that things have dried out enough to lay the stone we have found even more issues and the company owner while admitting the mistakes won't fix them. Not worth the aggravation.

I called a few companies, but Reuben Borg Fence stood out from the rest. Gerald, the estimator, was knowledgeable and he recommended replacing the fence with quality posts that had a warranty from rotting in 20 years, wider boards, and a protective stain to ensure the fence would last a long time. This was important to me because it makes it worth the investment to have good quality and have it done right the first time. Not just offering a quick short term repair while trying to reuse the old fence. The crew that came to install the fence did a great job, check out the photo. I would highly recommend them to my neighbors, friends and family for their fence projects in the future.

Ignacio, who came for the site visit and identified himself as the owner, was very easy to communicate with both in person and over the phone. However, Jackie, (not clear to me if she's the co-owner or Ignacio's wife) finalizes pricing and pretty much runs the show. For our project, we had picked IVS to do the work, but the price kept increasing by thousands of dollars. I asked to speak with Ignacio since these changes were inconsistent with what I discussed with him and put them week above our other quotes, but Jackie said that's not necessary since she decides the pricing. They also charge tax on materials, which no other fencers do (since they're already paying tax to Home Depot, etc.). These business practices felt disingenuous to me and like bait and switch. I've had issues in the past with businesses like this that once the work begins they'll change order you again and ask for more money. So we did not use them. For this fence, we received multiple quotes. Two companies were in the $9-10K range and IVS was around $12K. All were licensed and bonded. We went with the lowest quote and are extremely happy with our fence.

After getting multiple quotes, Matt stood out for the best combination of experience, value, and craftsmanship. He was incredibly patient--sticking with us for nearly a year through timing delays, big decisions, the birth of our child, and City permitting hurdles. Now that we've moved on to other projects, we truly wish every contractor were as professional, skilled, timely, and collaborative as Matt. Our first project was a large fence around our steep backyard. Matt met with us and our neighbors multiple times to finalize placement and coordinated on what needed to be cleared. His team completed the fence at record speed, and the redwood blends beautifully into the forested backdrop. It looks fantastic--and our dog loves his new wonderland. The second project was a much more complex like-for-like replacement of a 30-year-old deck. Matt guided us on what to keep, what to upgrade, and walked us through material and design options. We chose TimberTech decking with a redwood and hog wire railing, and the result is stunning. Despite unexpected permitting challenges with the City of Oakland, Matt stayed fully engaged, coordinating with our structural engineer and always making himself available. His team demolished and rebuilt the deck remarkably quickly, and the finished product has transformed our home. It's added so much gathering space, and every time we're out there, it feels like we're on vacation. We recommend Matt without hesitation for any fence or deck project.

John was very professional, communicative, and his pricing was very fair and transparent. Throughout the project, John and his crew went above and beyond, providing additional value. What particularly impressed me with John was his creativity and eye for design, which was very helpful when setting up this project. He had ideas on the layout & plants to select from. The price per foot (same materials, design) were: $120, $145, $179, $222. I've found that when it comes to fencing and landscaping, there is a huge range of vendor prices (and personalities!)
