Led by Mr. Dwayne, the tour is an hour and a half learning about the Burton Street Community, a historically Black neighborhood in West Asheville and the victim of gentrification and highway expansions. Hood Huggers was created to serve as a champion for the 1912 neighborhood and its long-time residents. My wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I booked a Sunday morning tour. Since it was just us, he gave us the option to walk it or take his little shuttle. Mr. Dwayne gave us the background on the area before Mr. Cotton, the grandson of the man who founded the neighborhood, joined us with a book of photos. After a drive, we ended at the Peace Gardens and Market, a sacred space for the community.

He showed us a lot of different areas that were Historical for the African-American community. He also shared a lot of historical information of the schools and colleges in the area that were very prominent years ago. I will definitely recommend this tour hands down to give you more of a historical African-American background of the city based on the money that we spent I feel that it was a great value for the tour that we received the service was outstanding by our tour guide and hands-down. We were given a history of the area; shown some of the places Dirty Dancing was filmed in the Autumn of 1986. We saw the stairs where Jennifer Grey practiced her dancing. The movie was set in summer but the filming was in autumn so the tree leaves were painted. The water was cold while filming so the actors needed to get warmed up between takes. Some of the houses on the lake caught on fire so that led to a fire service with a boat so they can get there quicker than by road for fires on the lake. A lot of the homes are second homes for folks so I was surprised by the size of them. One of the houses had its own incline system to get from the house to the lake. It reminded me of an incline railway. Another house looked like a castle on the lake. Some of the original houses were smaller. The views from the lake were amazing with the Blue Ridge mountains and Chimney Rock. It is a fun tour with great scenery.

No help…read moreextended (I called both men assigned & on site as Treks reps) when my hotel room was too close to the hotel's ventilation exhaust outlet, and I needed to move to a different side of the building. No inquiry into my well-being when I didn't appear for the 3 a.m. fire evacuation (due to the old building's faulty system) because my sleep-aid dosage was heavy but needed to handle the exhaust noise. I also question the driving judgement of the coach drive/business owner, after seeing how he handled traffic situations on the trip. Plus, the owner called no one to assist guests when our tour arrived back almost 3 hours late, and I had to wait a half-hour just to get my car keys, left in the business office per Treks rule. I lived through it all, but never again.

I am very prone to car sickness, but was not a problem driving all over the mountains. It was very safe. I'm still in aw about how smart she is. She knows everything about the area; the flora and fauna, wildlife, the trails, history and folklore of the area -just everything! I was with my sister and niece and my 83 year old mother. MK picked the best trails for us. She was so patient with us and really just gave us the best experience. She set a pace that was comfortable for all of us. I was nervous going down some rock steps. She was super understanding, and held my hand to make sure I was safe We've been talking about this hike ever since. I cannot say enough about MK. The company is great super easy to book. I wanted to book them for tarot card as well, however I wasn't sure where to fit that into our schedule. We had Kristin as our hiking guide and she was so incredibly sweet! She also lead us through an amazing relaxing, yet energizing yoga sesh on the top of the mountain. I would love to do this again at sunset because I can only imagine how much more magical it was! Kristin was also a wealth of knowledge and great to have small chat with on the hike up and down. We had Christian as our chef, we still talk about this meal a month later!!! He was so chill and his cooking style fit in perfectly with our group. His style is simple delicious flavors and very seasonal. Our group had a few dietary restrictions which was no issue. We were so full after but felt great from his healthy cooking. We can't wait for our next girls trip to use Asheville Wellness again!

She knew a lot and even put a happy birthday sign on since it was my son's birthday. We saw the historical sights and then got to choose the last leg of the tour. We chose the Omni Grove Park Inn, which was a lot of fun. One of his favorite parts was the wild turkey Jennifer pointed out on the Montford Area part of the tour.
