While visiting Asheville for a long weekend from Washington, D.C., booking a Hood Huggers tour was…read moreone of the best things we did. Led by Mr. Dwayne, the tour is an hour and a half learning about the Burton Street Community, a historically Black neighborhood in West Asheville and the victim of gentrification and highway expansions. Hood Huggers was created to serve as a champion for the 1912 neighborhood and its long-time residents. My wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I booked a Sunday morning tour. Since it was just us, he gave us the option to walk it or take his little shuttle. Mr. Dwayne gave us the background on the area before Mr. Cotton, the grandson of the man who founded the neighborhood, joined us with a book of photos. After a drive, we ended at the Peace Gardens and Market, a sacred space for the community.

He showed us a lot of different areas that were Historical for the African-American community. He also shared a lot of historical information of the schools and colleges in the area that were very prominent years ago. I will definitely recommend this tour hands down to give you more of a historical African-American background of the city based on the money that we spent I feel that it was a great value for the tour that we received the service was outstanding by our tour guide and hands-down. I definitely would recommend this tour.

I organized a wine tour through Kimberlee for a girls weekend/bachelorette and was extremely…read moredisappointed with the service, communication, and entire day. We made the most of it, but at the end of the day I would have rather have just hired a car service and mapped out wineries on my own. Please beware of the following: * Kimberlee was 45 minutes late for picking us up for our day of wineries. * Kimberlee drove us to our first winery while texting-and-driving, and when one of us expressed concern she snapped at us. * Our tour included a *pastries and mimosas* breakfast , but we did not get these until noon (and the *pastries* = mini-muffins). ~10 minutes later we were served lunch (so if you book you might want to eat your own breakfast and plan on bringing snacks). * Kimberlee and I discussed an itinerary with a specific pick-up and drop-off time, but she either didn't listen or didn't write it down because nothing went as requested. * When I special requested a particular winery stop (and called ahead to confirm that they could take our party for tasting), she refused to take us there because she didn't have a *business relationship* with the winery. I think we could have figured something else out on our own, and I have been successful in the past with NC Wineries with just hiring a car service/van separately and mapping out your own tour. I would recommend that for the money. It made for a very awkward and stressful day that should have been all sunshine and wine.

Travels in Wine is a good tour organizer: They're friendly, professional, well-organized. The…read moreproblem is that it's pretty hard to find a really good winery in NC, especially if you're looking for one that grows its own grapes. Some of the wineries on our tour were pretty decent, and one in particular was absolutely terrible (which I've since heard has been taken out of the tour). But the choice of really good NC wine is just very, very small. What makes these tours enjoyable is going to be the beautiful scenery, the fun of being chauffeured around for a day, and talking to all kinds of interesting people. But we did not feel like we learned a great deal about wine, despite the fact that the tour included a "mini wine-making lesson". That was not as informative as expected. Also, the wine and chocolate pairing we were supposed to experience consisted in being offered a bowl of a single kind of okay chocolates after the tasting. When we tried to book our tour and set a date, it was very hard to get in touch with Travels in Wine. I had to wait three days for my call to be returned. On the other hand, after emailing some feedback after the tour, I got a reply very quickly with detailed comments to my feedback, which was a pleasant experience.
