For $5 each (as opposed to the $50 each at Biltmore) we got a good look at a home that was built in 1815 & added to in 1840. It was so interesting to see the different wood, building techniques, and even the configuration of the home as it survived these past 199 years! There was a wonderful docent, I believe her name was Dotty ( but I'm not good with names so forgive me if that's not right.) She was a terrific guide and so attached to the place. It really is a great little house to tour and would be a terrific educational outing for kids. We drove past it twice as the town's brochures just state that "its on Hwy 280" - great guys, thanks. It is on 280, just past the Walmart look for the Taco Bell, turn left after the Taco Bell up into the pine trees on the gravel road. Led by Mr. Dwayne, the tour is an hour and a half learning about the Burton Street Community, a historically Black neighborhood in West Asheville and the victim of gentrification and highway expansions. Hood Huggers was created to serve as a champion for the 1912 neighborhood and its long-time residents. My wife, eight-year-old daughter, and I booked a Sunday morning tour. Since it was just us, he gave us the option to walk it or take his little shuttle. Mr. Dwayne gave us the background on the area before Mr. Cotton, the grandson of the man who founded the neighborhood, joined us with a book of photos. After a drive, we ended at the Peace Gardens and Market, a sacred space for the community.

He showed us a lot of different areas that were Historical for the African-American community. He also shared a lot of historical information of the schools and colleges in the area that were very prominent years ago. I will definitely recommend this tour hands down to give you more of a historical African-American background of the city based on the money that we spent I feel that it was a great value for the tour that we received the service was outstanding by our tour guide and hands-down. I contacted Tukit, we both agreed that in the COVID environment this could be difficult (businesses at 50%), but with so many other options to mix in, this could work. We met our tour guide, Peter, a little late, as even getting an Uber was dicey. We went straight to the Montford Rooftop. We never could have gone there (tried previously) but Tukit had reserved a table! The drinks were good, the view was pretty sweet, but now that we'd done it we never realized how small it was! As a change of pace, and my wife's love of wine, Peter suggested Pleb (Pleeeb), a new wine bar in the River Arts District. Pleb was a great choice, but the best part was Peter's knowledge of the local history. Next stop, Capella on 9. On the way, Peter, once again, excited us with the historical and architectural nuggets about AVL. Capella on 9 was huge! Beautiful views, fantastic drinks, and they really handled the COVID safety issues very well. This then led to the high point of our excursion..... on the way to the Grove Park Inn, Peter took us through the Mountain View's on Sunset Drive. Quiet ( the vehicle is electric), peaceful and breathtaking. We ended this at the Grove Park Inn Sunset Terrace for dinner. A reservation that Peter made for us earlier in the week, again the perfect choice. We wise to thank the Tukit Team, and especially Peter, for what my have been the best time my Wife ever had!

She knew a lot and even put a happy birthday sign on since it was my son's birthday. We saw the historical sights and then got to choose the last leg of the tour. We chose the Omni Grove Park Inn, which was a lot of fun. One of his favorite parts was the wild turkey Jennifer pointed out on the Montford Area part of the tour.

However, after driving an hour from Asheville. I was disappointingly surprised that they were closed. Not only was I bummed, but it appeared that other patrons as well. My guess is they decided to close on Veterans Day and didn't bother to tell anyone, but themselves. I am not from North Carolina, but live in Texas full time. It would be nice for them to post updated hours that they abide by.

Even though we got there super early, because of the holiday, there was a HUGE line getting into Devils Fork Park with the park rangers checking in with every vehicle - the rangers were turning away everyone without a parking reservation. I called Eclectic Sun and the nice lady on the phone said to show them our kayak reservation confirmation and that she would have a parking spot saved for us. Because we were in line for 1+ hours, we didn't get in until way after our reservation time but everyone was super nice and adjusted the time for us. The guys at the life jacket rental and down by the water helping people get in and out of their kayaks were also all very nice. All kayaks they had seemed to be in great shape, we had no problem using ours. Once you're out in the water, you can just dock it at any beach area you find around the lake (even though it was a busy day at the lake, there are so many beaches, you can easily find an empty one). We will definitely come back and rent one out again!
