Came here as a guest of a member while visiting highlands. We started playing pickleball (shout out to JT who was an awesome instructor). We got about 15 minutes into playing when there was thunder and we had to leave the courts. We ended up at the restaurant and were waiting out the rain. I appreciated their dedication to safety. Our waitress was nice but didn't mention they were out of multiple items until we tried to order them, which was frustrating. And then we found out the bar was still serving the items we tried to order. It was a bummer but in general a small annoyance in an otherwise pleasant afternoon read more

Lovely old resort renovated fairly well. Beautifully tended grounds. Very friendly but undertrained staff (lots of warm smiles but few answers to questions), good food, but way too many kinks to be worked out before it's worth the prices they are charging. Unheated pool, insufficient water safety equipment, rules, and staff, and difficulties finding out when things are available for guests versus local club members. We booked a year in advance but couldn't get golf times other than 8:30a or 2:30p, thus clashing with included family meal times. The croquet course was monopolized by locals/ club members. As Inn guests, we felt like second class citizens to the club members. Donkey and llama viewing of times were not posted or known by staff. Damp, dew soaked day beds. A Spa reservations was "lost" and then found after the scheduled time. Shower door installed backwards with the towel rod on the inside, toilet paper holder falling off, impossible to use toilet without squeezing past door and shutting it. On and on it went. Suggestions for simple improvements. 1. A property tour offered at scheduled times daily would have helped. 2. A "Manager's wine and cheese/ bites" gathering would have been welcome to meet and learn about the property, it's offerings, and staff. Despite being marketed as an inclusive multi generational destination, it is not set up for this at all. You need to bring most everything from off premises. No room service for anything except ice. Restaurant hours are not small child friendly at all. Breakfast doesn't begin until 7:30a. Only one outlet opens at 11:30a for lunch, the others open at 12p. Dinner begins at 5:30p. Our group was not offered the child menu until the FOURTH night. Dinner is three courses but the "rules" are not explained. Everything except tap water and brewed coffee is an additional charge. When I couldn't decide between two appetizers the server suggested to get both but did not mention the additional change. I was charged $33 plus for the second ($25 plus 20% service fee, plus other fees and taxes). Three way overcooked tenderloins midweek when the head chef was off. A few very bland dishes. Short pours (2.5 to 3 ounce) of white wine everytime (for @ $20 and up). Defensive attitude when questioned. Strangely the menu does not offer many (nor emphasize) local/ regional ingredients. Carolina trout, Springer poultry, and Anson grits were about it. In a region rich in tradition, we were surprised that there weren't more local, foraged, inspired, greens, grains, fungi, fruits, vegetables, breads, meats, game, fish, cheeses, etc. A cheese course as a dessert option would have been a welcome break from the overly sweet offerings. We anticipated Blackberry Farm quality and offerings to go with their name on the renovation and their prices. We were disappointed. We will not be recommending it after our experience. read more

Every detail was perfection- from the gorgeous decor and rustic, sumptuous rooms, to the stunning scenery and myriad of activities, and of course the absolutely perfect meals!! Our recent 3 night stay at High Hampton was the worst value-for-money luxury travel experience of my life. I'm not trying to be mean-spirited or hyperbolic. But when a resort charges thousands per night (plus a 20% required service charge) and trumpets its connection to Blackberry Farm expectations are set accordingly. Our visit unfolded like a mashup between a comedy about unsuspecting college students forced to run a high-end resort and a Seinfeld episode. The sheer number of mistakes is too lengthy to fully catalog, but I'll share some highlights. Check in seemed fine until a college-aged woman led us to our room. We opened the door to a lovely, well-appointed layout...except for one (large) fly in the ointment. Sitting in the middle of the room was a portable air conditioner (one of the boxy ones that looks like a suitcase you must check when traveling). It had a large plastic tube running out to the window which was sealed (poorly) by taped aluminum foil. The unit was loud - not SEC football game loud, but loud enough to slowly drive you insane while sleeping. My wife and I stared at the unit and then at the woman. She acted as though nothing was amiss. Before we could gather ourselves to speak, she walked back out the door. After the initial shock wore off my wife called the front desk and was informed of "an issue with the regular AC unit" and that the turbine engine sounds in our room were from the "supplemental AC." We later learned that multiple rooms had broken AC and portable units were installed while awaiting repairs. They never bothered to inform us before arrival (or do anything to compensate for the downgrade in experience). An egregious oversight for a resort of this price level. The dining experience at High Hampton was wildly inconsistent. There were good parts, but the low points were cringeworthy. On the positive side we had some great lunch service (Jake and Clare were both excellent, great caesar salad and soup). Morning pastries and baked goods were consistently excellent. However, dinner service was a disaster. Many of the staff at High Hampton are college students. It's clear these students are not experienced or properly trained. Orders were forgotten, food allergies missed, servers couldn't explain dishes on the menu, didn't know differences in speciality coffee drinks, and constantly interrupted the table throughout the meal. One of the lowlights was when I asked about the sauce for a pasta dish. The server's response was a 3-minute monologue of unintelligible, contradictory rambling. The honest answer would have been "I don't know but let me check" but this young man was determined to keep talking. He kept stumbling through contradictions like "the sauce is butter based...but it's not dairy or butter-tasting...the flavor is almost a Cajun style...but not spicy...." It felt like a standup comedy sketch. In the end I actually ordered the pasta purely out of morbid curiosity. I regretted that choice. The service debacles might have been tolerable if the food were exemplary. Sadly, it was not. Much of it was good if unmemorable. But there were big misses as well. Among the biggest disappointments - 3 of us ordered duck and all asked for it medium rare. Instead, all 3 of us were served well done. Not somewhat well done, not a mild pink vs red, I mean gray, chewy, wildly overcooked. I've never eaten duck that poorly cooked before in my life and the fact that all 3 of the orders were done this way means either 1) the waiter inexplicably told them we ordered well done, or 2) the line cook making duck that night didn't know how to cook duck and the chef in charge wasn't checking dishes before they went out. Another lowlight - a coconut cake dessert that turned out to have a remarkable resemblance to the Pepperidge Farm frozen coconut cake I fondly recall from my youth. I love that cake...but I don't expect to pay these prices for it. To top if off, when we checked out, we discovered that High Hampton had overcharged us $400. When we asked the front desk to fix the error we were informed they could not because "bill changes require a manager." We were in a rush, so we asked that they fix the bill when the manager arrived and send the updated copy via email. They did not. It took 6 days and nearly a dozen emails/phone calls to get the bill fixed. I could keep going with many more stories but if you've read this far, I'm sure you get the idea. I wanted to love High Hampton - everyone was nice and well intentioned and the grounds/facilities are excellent. But for these rates you can have far better experiences elsewhere. read more

This place does not live up to their sister properties, Blackberry Farms and Blackberry Mountain. The chef has an attitude that his food can't be served out of his dining room. When I enqired about take out/room delivery options, it was limited to a menu that I would equate to a kids menu at Disneyland. No 24x7 dining. Limited dining hours and for the price you pay for a room here, you have to pay additional for lunchtime dining or snacks, which are exorbently priced. Don't stay in Log Cabin - on busy street and near entrance. Not worth the price. They have work to do to provide an experience that is focused on the customer, not their priorities. read more

Though an impressive property, our high hopes (for $1,000/night) we're not met. As another reviewer mentioned, the staff was very friendly but grossly undertrained. There was a mixup in our dinner time one evening and one of our spa reservations accidentally got cancelled. Nobody could remedy either. We paid for an upgraded room, which felt small and cold -- in large part because the fireplaces had all been turned off for the season. We wouldn't have booked a room with a fireplace if that information had been disclosed! For a resort, not much was included and we felt nickeled & dimed the entire stay. Needless to say, we will not return nor would we recommend this property. read more

What a great place to get away and enjoy life. For us, High Hampton is a place to get grounded. It offers you a place to enjoy life without all the busyness of our day to day regimen. The first time my wife and I stayed here, I was quite doubtful. Oh man, a place without TV or phones in the room? What in the world have we gotten into, I quietly asked? Well, quite simply and after two days, the answer was simple; we were retreating into a place of majestic simplicity. Let me summarize as follows: - Three wonderful meals per day - A room adjacent to a stream (what a great sleep sound) - Two private mountains to climb during the day. (Chimney Top is my favorite-Climb; to the top and you will know you are alive) - A marvelous golf course to play (short, yet challenging) - Canoeing on their private lake - Volleyball and other types of outdoor games - Family activities at night including Bingo for the kids - Etc. Selfishly, I did not want to even write a review about this place because it is sometimes difficult enough to get a room. However, I do want others to know about them and what they have to offer. If you want to step back, slow down, and enjoy some family time in a serene environment, then give High Hampton a try. read more

Not a serious business-apparently more of a hobby! In July, we booked two suites for the first week in November and paid in full. High Hampton Inn called today and notified us that they decided to close for the season on Oct. 31 and our reservation would not be honored. This is a nice getaway place in the North Carolina mountains. However, be aware many things are stuck in the 1940s: formal dress code for dinner, rustic accommodations, 3 meals a day or bust. Old fashioned games at night. I know it is tradition, but this is 2017. I'll wear a nice shirt and dress pants for dinner, I'd rather not wear a coat and tie. The food could be better for the exorbitant prices you pay. Staff is pretty good. read more

The scenic location of this place is amazing. The food is great and is a very good place to stay.

A summer camp experience for the whole family. This place is a time warp from a much earlier time. No tv, phone, or a/c although there is wifi in the lobby. Buffet food is good, not great. Delightful staff is from all over the world which is great for conversation. Have seen several people I know staying here. Views from the second floor porch are wonderful. Hiking, tennis, golf, activities for kids and some unbelievable perennials on the grounds make for a great weekend adventure. read more

This place needs a reality check! I guess since they are on the National Register of Historic Places they feel they don't have to provide stellar service and accommodations. We went up there for a wedding (reception was at the hotel and we stayed one night there as well) and it cost over $200 a night! For that price, the staff should have been at our every beck and call, but the people acted like they didn't care. They barely offered to have someone help us with our bags and show us to our room (which was in a lodge through the trees- not easy to find). Our room was a weird contraption consisting of a 2 room suite and bathroom. There were 2 queen beds in one room and 2 twin beds in the other, and since it was only my guest and me, this was too much space. Our toliet ran all night even though I asked the front desk TWICE to fix it. Furthermore, I expected luxe tolieties (since it was $200 a night), but all they provided was a measly bar of soap and 1 little shampoo. The food at the reception and the breakfast was quite good, I must say. There is a definite lack of signage on the roads to the hotel. We got lost in the mountain passes trying to find it. If they had enclosed directions with our confirmation, this may have been avoided. All in all, this was very disappointing. I'd rather have stayed at the Scottish Inn and saved over $100 instead! read more

What a paradox of a place. It's the sort of place that you really want to like; warm and inviting with a fire in the fireplace in the main lobby which is almost like a huge living room. The rooms, though we were warned they were rustic, really need some updating. The beds were comfortable. The bathroom was small with no place to put your stuff. Our room was dark and although it had a wonderful view of the lake, we tended to only go there to sleep. I found the lack of a TV and phone to be perfect although I would've appreciated having wireless internet in the room (it's just in the main building.) Jacket and tie for dinner is ok but not if I have to go through a buffet (there is no table service apart from drinks.) The food at dinner was a good solid 7 on a scale of 10. Breakfast was a bit better than that. The staff was friendly and really wanted to please but seemed undertrained. For example, my wife ordered a Manhattan. After ten minutes, the waitress returned to say the bartender wanted to know if she wanted it sweet or sour (??) Now the paradox: I can actually accept all the foregoing but the reason for a 3-star rating is the price. It is eye-watering. Our two nights set me back over $700, not including alcohol. Mind you, I have no problem splurging like that once in awhile but High Hampton Inn struck me as being overpriced by a factor of at least double. read more
