Highlands Aerial Park - Hello!!! It's His 50th Birthday!!!

What better way to see the natural splendor of Highlands than by an aerial park? That was our…read morethought when we booked a reservation for our group that had two small kiddos. We went with Zippy's Tree Top Adventure Course given the age of the kids and we all had a great time. Even though Zippy's is tailored for families, it can be challenging and fun for adults as well, especially if you are like us where you can't remember the last time you were on a zip line or a ropes course. The course is essentially a circuit of several stations and you can keep doing them to your heart's desire until your time runs out. There are guides to help walk you through the area who are also outfitted with go pros to capture your experience. After about 30 minutes, we were all pretty gassed, and we had a great time examining the go pro film and pictures. If you are new to the area like us, stopping in at the aerial park is a must given that it's not every day that you are surrounded by such natural beauty. We plan to be back on hopefully our next trip to highlands so we can try out some of the more difficult courses, or we may just do Zippy's again.

Our guides Audrey & Samuel were just fantastic. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the whole experience. It made my fiancé's 50th birthday a most memorable one. #zipHAPpy

Though an impressive property, our high hopes (for $1,000+/night) we're not met. As another…read morereviewer mentioned, the staff was very friendly but grossly undertrained. There was a mixup in our dinner time one evening and one of our spa reservations accidentally got cancelled. Nobody could adequately remedy either. We paid for an upgraded room, which felt small and cold -- in large part because the fireplaces had all been turned off for the season. We certainly would not have booked a room with a fireplace if that information had been disclosed! For a resort at this price point, not much was included. We felt nickeled & dimed the entire stay and cannot in good conscience recommend this property.

The renovation is outstanding. As opposed to many renovations where the character of the place is destroyed (The Cloister on Sea Island for example), High Hampton's mountain charm remains with exemplary accommodations, culinary skills, and service. They have essentially a co-op program with nearby Western Carolina University, providing them with a pool of talent, always a challenge for remote locale resorts. The charm remains with no TVs in the rooms and a wide variety of games in the lobby. Not just board games, but games of skill. They have not bowed to the temptation of a video game room. Amenities were first class. Ample tennis and pickle ball courts and a great croquet lawn. We did not golf but the course looks in great shape. The staff service level was 5 star resort quality as was the menu. Only giving it a 4 as the Kids Camp is just glorified baby sitting. We had a five year old and we could see the campers were unsupervised, particularly preschoolers. We saw the counselors just turn the kids loose at the pool and lake and in some cases not even watching them but standing around talking to each other.
