Fire Mountain Inn Cabins and Treehouse is a great stay. I wanted to relax in a place with the mountain outlook, and this place offers a stress-free getaway due to Scaly Mountain and Blue Ridge Mountain. Parking: One-way trail after you hit a certain point on the property. Easy to navigate. Plenty of parking in the accommodation area. Service: Matthew and Hiram follow strict COVID-19 protocol here. Guests must wear masks around the property and maintain the 6-feet social distancing. They do not enter booked rooms 2 days before and after the guest's stay. Guests must go to the front desk to get service (extra toiletries, towels, etc.), as there is no maid service currently. No complaints about the service. WIFI: It's non-existent, even though there is "free" WIFI. Connection was not great. Some cellular service may come through, but it was nice to escape from the tech world. Location: Perfect! It's about a 15-20 minutes drive into downtown Highlands. Great distance away from great hikes and views. They have an easy trail throughout the property here, if you do not want to leave Fire Mountain. Massage 1-hour (3/5): Very nice lad but wasn't the best I've had. Great view when you enter though. Clean, high windows that will let the blazing sun through, so it can get a bit hot. The lady followed COVID-19 protocol. Fire & Water Restaurant Dinner (3/5): 1. Watermelon Gazpacho (2/5): It was refreshing with the watermelon. However, the flavor was lacking for me. Bland overall. 2. Cornmeal Crusted Trout (4/5): I cleaned most of this plate. Trout was crusted perfectly without too much cornmeal. Carrots with the sweet glaze were a nice touch. The other 2 veggies were OK. 3. Peach Cobbler (3/5): I'm not a big fan of cobbler. This was just OK for me. Matthew and Hiram are genuine and knowledgeable. They do try to keep up with this place. Matthew is a great cook, as he changes the breakfast and dinner menu up here and there. Would I come back? Yes. Fire Mountain is a quiet inn nestled deep in the Nantahala National Forest. From arrival, co-owners Hiram and Mathew's passion for the experience is apparent. I was greeted by Mathew and their adorable dog Lily, given a tour of the grounds, and handed maps of local hikes, waterfalls, and excellent places to eat in the nearby town of Highlands. The inn itself is thoughtfully decorated, a combination of rustic and posh which is typically a difficult balance to strike. And yet, they've achieved it with aplomb. I stayed in the Nantahala room at the Inn, drawn to the extra-large soaking tub that I used numerous times. I never expect these large tubs to fill adequately, and yet there was plentiful hot water to soak my cares away. The first thing you notice about Fire Mountain is the lack of modern distractions. There are no televisions and no radios. I had about two bars of LTE (Verizon) that kicked in right as I drove up the hill, allowing me to text my partner upon my arrival and feel like I could be "connected" if I chose to. The Inn also has guest WiFi which allowed me to do basic internet stuff as I pleased. It probably wouldn't support any streaming service... then again, why anyone would want to watch Netflix up here is beyond me! The other thing you notice is the air, which is a few degrees cooler than the nearby town of Dillard down the mountain (and a proper 10+ degrees cooler than the Devil's Doorstep I came from!). The humidity is low, even in mid-July. For this reason, Fire Mountain does not have air conditioning and doesn't need it. Despite being a lifelong Southerner, I'm quite sensitive to heat, but the temperature was comfortable my entire trip. Following Mathew's recommendation, I closed up my room in the morning and opened it back up mid-afternoon, leaving it open all night so I could rest peacefully serenaded by the crickets and tree frogs. I'm no stranger to this area, so the eight or nine mile drive into town was nothing to me. In fact, the winding mountain roads, two scenic overlooks, and abundant rhododendrons made each trip delightful. Hiram and Mathew's recommendations for food, shopping, and sights helped me reconnect with the Highlands region in blissful ways. Breakfast at Fire Mountain is substantial. Each breakfast started with a plate of fresh fruit. Mathew additionally provided boxed lunches for me, perfect for carrying up a mountain or down one of the area's many waterfall trails. I only wish I could have enjoyed dinner at the Inn, which was unfortunately not available during my stay. Such is life; I'll just have to return another time! I'm running out of space, so I'll just say that Fire Mountain was a 10/10 recommend from me. I can't wait to return! read more

My husband and I returned to Fire Mountain this past weekend for our one-year wedding anniversary, and our stay was just as delightful as the first time we stayed in 2021. Hiram welcomed us with a smile and gave us a very detailed description and maps of where to find the hiking trails we were after. Mathew made lovely breakfasts for us on both days of our stay, and we enjoyed a lovely relaxing weekend in the Star Maiden room in the Inn. Fire Mountain is an elegant, upscale, romantic getaway meant to unplug you from the stresses of daily life. Hiram and Mathew provide a catered experience that is perfectly curated, and we loved returning to this special place. It is obvious that both of them have put their heart and soul into this establishment and we are grateful they continue to share it with us. My fiancé surprised me this past weekend with a get-away trip here. Upon arriving, the place looked unusual and very different from what I'm accustomed to when we're taking leisure trips. Wow! Amazing place!! Both of the hosts/owners, Hiram and Matthew, were SO kind, knowledgeable, attentive to us. They were a wealth of knowledge when it came to our desires to see the many sites in the area. They ensured our dietary wants were adhered to for our breakfasts and our to-go lunches. Fantastic views, food, and the grounds are to be found here at this gem of a resort. I was a little apprehensive to their "minimalistic" thinking when it came to no TV, internet, and phones- but that's such a great idea today!!! We need to get away from those mind numbing things we do daily and recharge ourselves, it was awesome! Can you tell I loved this place?? These gentlemen are awesome, I can't thank them enough for such a great weekend!!! Would I recommend this place? YES!!! Absolutely!! I should have taken the time to read more reviews... this is the worst host I have ever come across... he was incredibly rude after approving us and our dogs for a 3-day stay, took our money, and on the day of check-in told us that our dogs are not welcome after we traveled 700 miles by car. The location of these stays is also NOT in Highlands but in the small town of Scaly Mountain, about 25 minutes SW of Highlands. This host deserves no one's business and I hope that Airbnb also realizes this and takes him off their platform as they are contributing to his scam and the awful way he treats people. read more

Without getting into detail this is the worst stay at a bed-and-breakfast hotel resort we have experienced in the past 35 years of our married life. We have traveled the United States and the world and stayed at many bed-and-breakfast and hotels and this one has the rudest and most obnoxious hosts/owners we have ever encountered. These owners have no business operating a guest services establishment. Nothing else needs to be said in this review other than the way that the owners treat their guests, which is deplorable to say the least. I recommend not staying at this establishment. We should have read all the other reviews in this category before booking this stay. You will see that other guests all agree, going back 10-15 years ago with the way they have been treated in a disrespectful manner. No matter how the owner perceives the guest treating them, they have no right to treat a guest in their establishment in a disrespectful manner. read more

I find it so helpful to see I'm not alone when I read other reviews on here and also on other platforms, specifically about the attitude of the owner. After approving me and pets, which I have in writing/invoices, the owner "claims" none of this occurred. He actually knows it did, because he called me to take it back! Yes, Michael. It's called the truth. He not only yelled at me on the phone for miscommunication on his and his staff's part, but belittled one of my dogs for their breed on top of it saying "my dog would offend other guests." I could not believe it. I didn't know you could tell if a dog offends someone, but apparently you can. He will respond to this below stating I didn't respond for a long time when asked about my pets, which I agreed and said I apologized for the delay. However, we connected and had two conversations prior to my arrival, where I answered all of their questions asked about my pets, including breed and weight etc. I received a call back with approval, where it was explained to me the daily pet fee for both dogs. I agreed, and I then received an updated invoice, and well, he will act like I just made all of this up! Again, the truth. It always comes out. God works in mysterious ways, and how blessed I was to have to take my business elsewhere. read more

We just returned from an amazing Thanksgiving dinner from Fire + Water, atop Fire Mountain, just outside of Highlands, NC. The afternoon began with drinks and conversation in a beautiful setting with a spectacular views of the Appalachian Mountains. A variety of wines complimented each course while a full bar was available on request. The prix fixe menu was perfectly designed to compliment each item from the poached pear salad and warm pumpkin soup to moist turkey, stuffing, sweet potatoes, kale and collard casserole and moist corn bread. The flavors, colors and textures were each a special dish in their own right. Desserts were top-shelf. The staff paid close attention to every detail and service was well-timed. All in all, a small venue that is a true gem in the mountains of western North Carolina. read more

7/2: My husband and I finally planned a vacation getaway for July. For a frame of reference, my last "vacation" was spine surgery in 2020. We reserved a week at Fire Mountain Inn outside Highlands, NC, scheduled for a week from now. Unfortunately, in the past 2 weeks, COVID has hit everyone in our household and my husband and I have been been especially sick and slow to recover. So my husband called the Inn, explained the situation, and asked if we could move the reservation forward several weeks so that we would not risk exposing his guests and staff to COVID. Hiram said this was not possible, even though the hotel is wide open for the several weeks we asked about. The best he could offer, he said, was to refund half of our deposit, with the other half to be returned if he is able to rent the room to someone else. Well, we received an email this morning confirming our cancellation and stating that none of our deposit would be refunded. Not one cent. What happened to basic human decency? Is money really more important than risking the health of his hotel guests and staff? I will tell everyone I know about this experience. Update 7/9: the Inn clearly was able to rent our room, but they still haven't refunded a cent of our money read more

NOT DOG FRIENDLY as advertised. I wish we had read previous reviews who clearly feel the same way. The owner is very passive aggressive in his disdain towards dogs and "delicately" rude to their owners. We couldn't take two steps in the door to check-in before he started to berate us regarding the dog policy before remembering that he was one of the owners and shouldn't be so off-putting to his guests. He tried to walk it back, I suppose. We booked the place because of the dog policy and following guidelines have never been a problem for us or our super sweet, exceptionally well-behaved pooch, so being belittled about it through our entire romantic stay was just delightful. "What time is breakfast? 9:30 and your dog isn't welcome." We read the full-length printout about your dog policy so your comments at every interaction are just plain tacky. We get it, you don't like dogs but you like our money. Just be honest and say they aren't allowed so you don't have to be so passive aggressive about it the whole time. Or how about focusing on having the bath tub fill up with more than 10% warm water before it turns cold? Or giving us more than 3/4 of a toilet paper roll with no more in the cabin? Or maybe serving breakfast at a time when people actually eat breakfast? In our opinion, you seem to be micromanaging the wrong things and your personal feelings shouldn't bleed over into your guests' experience. Too much to ask? Okay, then just put this one insufferable phony on dish and trash duty instead of on the welcoming committee. read more

I rarely have been as excited as I was when I found this place mostly because of Yelp. I was reserving my husband and my anniversary weekend trip. The reviews and pictures looked perfect. I reserved a cabin for privacy (again Yelp reviews). Ok; cut to the chase... I was seriously disappointed. It was nothing like I was expecting. The cabin was more like staying with my mom in a Fairfield Glade cabin with aluminum foil on the stove burners, (not lying on that). Here in lies the rub... I have stayed at Fairfield Glade for that price- what Fire Mountain is charging is for something completely different. I paid for lovely, pampered, special and what I got was typical state park accommodations. I'm not hating on more practical accommodations; I have done primitive camping (2 nights is all I can do primitively), and everything in between. The cabins are not lovely, the room with the Jacuzzi tub was more like a place that you would clean a hog or a deer or something. It is in a walled room all by itself - the tube is deep set in the floor (put the lotion on the body). Weird, not romantic not even rustic, just weird and creepy. The 2 stars is for the restaurant outdoor space; which was breathtaking. (I should of slept on that deck). I have posted a picture. I would reserve dinner at their restaurant, it is way way overpriced, but it is the only time you get the feeling of a special time away. read more

For travelers with discerning taste, please beware this inn. My husband booked 3 nights (over $1K) in the Laurel tree house room for our anniversary. The Laurel "Treehouse" is small and cramped with a tiny bathroom and a 3' x 3' shower stall. It has inadequate shelving and storage with a tiny pedestal sink. The highly touted "Wrap-around-Deck" is nothing more than a 3' walkway with a corner table and 2 dirty chairs. You can see a little sunset through the dense branches. The boardwalk to the room from the driveway is narrow and slippery when wet. The food is very good, however, prepared by Matthew. Wine is supposed to be included with the overpriced prix fixe dinner. If you enjoy wine, bring your own. The service is appalling. Rude and insulting. Leaving after 2 nights and paying for 3 with no refund left us realizing there are far better choices in Highlands. My boyfriend and I were looking for a mountain retreat to escape the Miami heat for New Year's Eve and found this place via google search. We were drawn in by the incredible views and rave reviews on trip advisor, and I'm happy to say our stay totally exceeded our expectations. We called in a few days in advance of booking and Hiram was patient and kind and answered all of our questions. He took us through the available room options providing pros and cons, shared with us traveling tips for getting to their inn, and advised us on what there was to do in the immediate area - all before he even had our business. When we arrived that Friday afternoon we were greeted by Matthew who kindly took us through all inn and room details and made sure we settled into our room. He also took the time to recommend plenty of local hikes and activities, as him and Hiram are avid hikers and know the area like the back of their hand. The inn is about a 15 minute drive to downtown Highlands with surrounding hikes and waterfalls within just a few miles. The purpose of our trip was to feel secluded and disconnected, and this was the perfect spot. There's a lovely library/sitting area with a fantastic view of the mountains, and plenty of peaceful overlooks on the property itself. Our room was on the smaller side, but it was just fine for what we needed. I personally loved that there was no TV in the room. A minor complaint: we stayed in the Red Thunder room - which was the best part of our stay given its incredible views - however just note that when the fire is lit in the library the smoke seeps into the room and makes it a bit stuffy. It had occurred after we had gone to bed, otherwise we would have alerted the management. I'm sure they would have gladly taken care of it. I also would have appreciated a mini fridge to store food items since it is quite a (winding) drive to and from town. I do agree the inn overall is a bit overpriced, but not enough so to prevent us from returning again. We had a spectacular time and the inn was both luxurious yet rustic. Because the inn is perched on Scaly Mountain, we were greeted with 180 degree views of the Blue Ridge Mountains and gorgeous sunsets every evening. The inn is a quick drive from Clayton, Dillard, Highlands, and several hiking destinations, putting it in a great location. Despite being close to everything, the inn still feels very secluded, perfect if you're looking for some peace, quiet, and tranquility. The accommodations are beautiful while feeling light, airy, and one with nature. Breakfast was delicious and offered a unique dining experience overlooking the mountains. We also opted to have dinner at the inn's restaurant one night and were not disappointed with the lovely three-course meal. The after-dinner bonfire on the mountain capped off a magical evening. Finally, this review wouldn't be complete without mentioning the wonderful innkeepers. He explained everything available to us on the property as well as recommendations for offsite dining and activities. Breakfast was included in the package we chose at booking and it was AMAZING! Mathew is an extraordinary chef who prepares gourmet meals that will have you in absolute awe. This resort is quiet and I would not recommend it for families with small children as the peaceful environment is one that cannot fully be appreciated by youth. My partner and I have a teenager and a toddler and very demanding jobs back home so this romantic getaway was truly one for the books. We were given a gift certificate for Fire Mtn by the best man at our recent wedding. We promptly booked our getaway and it did not disappoint. We stayed in the Spruce treehouse. The accomodations were quaint and comfortable. We also booked dinner at Fire +Water for our first night. The food was excellent. I ordered the filet and ordered it medium rare. I was accidentally given someone else's who had ordered the filet medium well. It was still delicious;however, the chef personally came over to apologize for the mistake and offered to give me another filet. I told him I was fine with what I had. He then came over again and offered, which this time I accepted. It was even more delicious medium rare. Breakfast was included in our stay and was also wonderful. We had excellent customer service and every need was satisfied. We enjoyed going into the town of Highlands and will be back soon. read more

We live near here but WERE considering a short stay for a big birthday and some other events in the future that are coming up in the fall and also next year. We were considering renting for 8-10 people for said bday. So today we headed to Fire Mountain on our way back from other business in a neighboring town. We stopped at reception to ask about dinners while not staying here and to inquire about fall availabilities. The owner was on the phone. He asked the caller to wait and then hurriedly and rudely told us to check the website and that he was on the phone and that we needed a reservation to ask a question. NOWHERE on the website does it say "appointment only" AND NOWHERE on the property does it say "appointment only." FMTN, I think you messed up. We live nearby and we were also checking out the property for overflow guests and events. Why were you so rude? ‍I don't want to share my hard earned money with a rude manager or owner. Mistake. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary at Fire Mountain this past week. We had a great time! Matthew was our host on property and could not have been more accomodating. Anything you want to do in the area, he will give you good advice and make sure you have an enjoyable experience. We had breakfast delivered to our cabin each morning and each day was a different surprise. There is a planned fire in the center of the property every Saturday night - weather permitting. Our Saturday was fairly stormy but it cleared out enough by sunset and Matthew had the fire burning for us - just my wife and I. It was awesome. If you go, be sure and meet Angelina and Jolie, the two resident Cavaliers. Very sweet girls. Fire Mountain is quiet and a perfect place to get away from the noise and fast pace of life. We cannot speak highly enough of Fire Mountain Inn. My husband and I stayed for 4 nights and our stay here was incredible. Our hosts, Hiram and Mathew, were fabulous. They took the time upon our arrival to cater to our plans - since we wanted to hike as well as see the town, they gave us the best trails, provided us with detailed maps and directions and gave us restaurant recommendations. Breakfast was included in our stay and each day the breakfast was exquisite: well-balanced, well composed and delightful to the eye. We had an amazing view of the mountains while eating our breakfast and sipping our coffee. Each morning they had a different fruit assortment as well. You MUST try their homemade strawberry jam that they serve - best we have ever had - it's what they're known for which we quickly found out. The outdoor and indoor seating is wonderful and you will get a view of the mountains wherever you sit. Everything is very clean as well, you can tell they take good care of everything. The Inn!!! Oh my, our room was wonderful. It's exactly what we were looking for for a relaxing get-a-way. We stayed in the Red Thunder room which had a spectacular view of the mountains. We could see the fog intermixed with the mountains in the morning and we had the perfect sunset view from our private balcony in the evening. The couch in the room is the most comfortable couch I have ever sat in - perfect to relax with a good book and look at the mountain view. The bathroom was very nice as well - uniquely designed. Housekeeping came every day which was very nice. We could also use the library room right outside our room. It had couches, tables, books, games to play and relaxing soft music playing. You can also see the mountains from this room if your room does not face the mountains. You can also relax in lounge chairs on the ground level with a mountain view. Hiram and Mathew did everything they could to make sure our stay was enjoyable. They even helped us to plan our next 2 days in Asheville, excited to share recommendations. You can tell they have a passion for what they do and you can tell they care very much about their guests to ensure they have a wonderful stay. If we ever come back to the mountains we will DEFINITELY be staying at the Fire Mountain Inn. We would give them more than 5 stars if we could. Best Inn in Highlands! read more

They are only a few miles from The Highlands with great restaurants and shopping and are also surrounded by hiking trails and waterfalls. Just spent a relaxing weekend at Fire Mountain. The view of the Blue Ridge mountains beyond the infinity pool is constantly changing. The meals are like having your own chef. Breakfast frittata, perfect steaks and strawberry rhubarb crisp dessert after dinner were memorable! Highly recommend this private getaway if you also appreciate crisp linens, artwork and hikes with wildflowers. Be sure to have a massage with Anna! We were really looking forward to staying until Hiram got involved. His animosity was extremely off-putting and all over the simple question of late check-in? His word for word response after I had emailed him in advance and had to get my work schedule changed to convenience him was "if you want to continue playing games with your arrival that is fine but we are not going to spend anymore time on this today" via email and then when I called him to let him know (only 2nd time contacting him very briefly) he told me they do not accept my kind at their inn? That I had inconvenienced them by asking such a simple question? And I need to have Expedia chance the reservation in the next hour or they will keep my money AND not let me stay there? Excuse me? Has he ever had a normal job in his life to make it to the mountains after a workday in Atlanta by 7:00pm? I have never been so rudely dismissed in my life. I did everything on my end to try and make this work and I am glad it did not. He didn't have the mental capacity to have any respect for his customer or come up with another option for check-in? In this email it said arrival must be before 7:30pm. Because we would be coming from Charlotte I was worried about making it on time so I called at 5:50pm to discuss. No one answered so I left a message. The next day I was able to contact someone. I was told in an oddly passive aggressive way there was no exception to the 7:30pm rule, that "most people take a day off", and "it will only cost you $50" to cancel the reservation (keeping in mind the reservation was barely 36hrs old). When I asked why the 7:30pm rule wasn't made clear during the reservation process I was rudely told that "you agreed to the terms and conditions". What I don't understand is why they clearly list out several T&Cs clearly on the booking screen but bury the 7:30pm arrival time in a hyperlinked "Terms and Conditions" - which NOBODY clicks on. EVER. I found this extremely deceptive as now they were able to collect $50 from me. Generally, I don't write scathing reviews but the way I was treated simply left me stunned. read more
