This is such a local gem. It's on Route 66 and sees plenty of traffic from Yukon residents as well as travelers. There is no other place like it near the metro! It is NEW MEXICAN food, not Mexican. Think white queso with green Chiles, calabacitas, and my favorite thing they offer-a Green Chile margarita. If you have room, go for a piece of the Green Chile Apple pie. It's one of those places where you try something different every time. They have a nice big patio with a view of Route 66 and the Mill. Inside, the vibe is inviting (fireplaces and friendly waitstaff). The bar is small and always hopping no matter what time of day you go. It will be busy, but they stay open late to accommodate seating everyone. read more

I was at Green Chili Kitchen last evening with four friends I haven't seen in months. The service was wonderful and the food delicious but it has to be the noisiest restaurant around. We had so much to catch up on and couldn't hear each other across the table. There are no soft surfaces to absorb the sound. Advertised as being in business for 10 years when you walk in, we have lived in the area for 15 years and never knew this place existed. We decided to give it a try. I ordered the Chile Relleno . The batter was tasteless and everything else; pinto beans, rice tasted ordinary. There was a green Chile queso for $9 that was just a simple queso with green chiles mixed in but nothing extraordinary. Wait staff was preoccupied with one specific table (whom I guess was someone they all knew) so we did not get refills or anyone checking on us. For 4 adults eating, this place cost $120. For years my favorite Latin resteraunt has been 1492 the midtown Oklahoma city location. It now has a rival in Yukon, the Green chilli kitchen located on route 66. We went back today for lunch and had one of the finest Tex mex meals in quite some time. Green chilli stew made with rotisserie chicken, the Frito chilli pie burrito, a grilled and smothered burrito, and a naked burrito bowl. Wowzer extra tasty. The metro area is loaded with average to less than average Tex mex cuisine. Why go to one of those beans and rice on a plate places where they pour cheese sauce over your meal to disguise the lack of flavor. I don't give out five star reviews very often but the Green chilli kitchen has earned it. We started our meal with queso and wrapped it up with slices of the home made pies. The weather today I'm in the mood for a warm bowl of stew. I love the green chile stew here is nice and chunky, a dollop of sour cream and just a touch of heat from the chilies. Enough to warm you up from the inside out. The queso is really good nice and creamy and comes with your choice of hot or mild green chile on top. Their standards also has a bit of a smoky taste to it to like the tomatoes were fire rested for or hand. It's nice touch. This restaurant has a nice date on the flavors of New Mexico. Absolutely charming! I don't throw that word around because I think it is such high praise. But charming is what I thought all night. We were happy to finally get to check this out last night. They've been so busy, which is a good thing! We got there a little after 8 and had to wait for about 20 minutes, but no bother. We sat at the bar and I had an tasty margarita made from lime juice and agave. It was so big, I wasn't even finished with it when dinner was over. The menu is outstanding. It took us forever to figure out what to order, but our helpful server Mindy helped us figure out some good choices that would allow us to sample more of the menu. I ordered the 1/4 rotisserie chicken, which came with a huge house salad, black beans and seasoned rice, with a large, fresh homemade flour tortilla. Um, it was $8. My salad was so big I couldn't finish it, the chicken was delicious. I don't think I could have eaten this amount of food at Taco Bueno for $8, and the quality was outstanding. Darren came by and told us a little bit more about the story of how this great restaurant came to be in Yukon. Others in our party had a burrito (delish), Christmas tamales and pinto beans - apparently five star all the way, and the enchiladas. Everyone loved their food and ate every bite (or as much of it as we could). We also loved the guac, with a bit of a kick to it and served with fresh tortillas). This is the sister restaurant to GCK in San Francisco; just check out the restaurant's press page if you want to read all about their success in the SF Chronicle, Guardian, even the Wall Street Journal. Their pies were so successful in SF, a separate storefront now sells the pies and their legendary pie shake. We were too full to try the pies last night, but we'll be back very soon methinks. I'm sure the sweet hostess has endured a phenomenal amount of abuse at the hands of patrons clamoring to be seated. Especially in the winter, when you can't just grab a margarita and go stand outside, she was being hassled by several people who were not that nice. I hope she gets mad tip-share or a great hourly salary or something. I hope people realize when they come to a place like this on a Friday night, yeah, there may be a wait. If you insisted on bringing the kiddos to the hot place in town on a weekend night, they better be okay with waiting, too. It's not the hostess' fault you're kid hasn't eaten since snack time at 8:15 on a Friday night. I'll look forward to updating and adding a fifth star. There was a bit of a timing issue, possibly in the plating of our food. My black beans and rice were a touch cold. We were one of the last parties to order, so it also could have been an end-of-the-evening issue. Either way, I wasn't terribly concerned. I'm eating pretty light these days. If I had been planning on eating all of it, I'm certain I could have asked for new sides and they would have been lovely about it. We went on a casual Sunday morning right when they opened. Was a good hostess greeting and that's where it ended. The waitress we had was "fake nice" and could tell she was working for a tip. She had only one other table and was still slow as molasses when we needed something. Of course the cardinal sin, she let my water cup get empty, and had to drink off my wife's until she made it around with a refill when I was done. Poor service. I ordered the savory stuffed sopapillas. Ordered with just ground beef because it was already $14 and to make it a steak version it would have cost me $2 more. Figured $14 was expensive enough for meat inside bread. It was bland and no flavor. More flavor in a Taco Bell soft taco. The beans where the only upside to the meal. Let me stary out by saying, Mexican and New Mexican food are different. I grew up in AZ, Mexico, lived in El Paso, and spent a lot of time in Las Cruces, NM. I have had real green chiles from Hatch, NM. I had high hopes for this place and was very let down. Nothing i had tasted like new mexican fare in the slightest bit. Their "hot" green chiles did not have any heat at all. There is so much more than adding green chiles to something to make it new mexican. Salsa i've bought from Target is better than their house salsa. The green chile chicken enchiladas were bland. Their version of a stacked enchilada is called a "flat" enchada and yes, it is flat. New mexican stacked enchiladas also have a fried egg on top and are generally 2 layers. The escabeche didn't have any heat and was dried out. The queso was good, but nothing special. The chile verde isn't anything more than what tastes like warmed up diced green chiles out of a can and smothered on something. Things i did love about Green Chile Kitchen was the ambiance, their beer selection and how they support Oklahoma by serving up mostly local beer. The sopapilla i had for dessert was amazing. The outdoor patio with live music was hoppin', and the restaurant aesthetically was awesome! Would not come back for the food. read more

I avoided this place at first. It's been here a long time and I am just now going. So the cons.... let's just get them out of the way. It's loud. The chairs are loud. The scoot on the floor is maddening. Put some chair pads on them already. Geez. The Queso. It tastes and likely is the Land o Lakes white cheese right out of the bag. It's sold commercially. It's not awful. I just expected better. It's salty. Shrug. I don't know. I am a chips and queso freak. My expectations are high. Yours might not be. The plates. Yes. Bulky and the staff likely hates them too. It's a thing. Really. Now on to pros. Tamales. Pork with hot green chili's. Yum. It's white masa. And it's creamy. All the different bean choices. Well done. The Hot salsa with the chunks of avocado.... yes please. The prices are reasonable. The staff is friendly and I have gotten really good service both times I have been there. It's not Tex Mex. That is correct. And it's good that it is not. We have enough Tex Mex. it's nice. But it's not quiet. And that will likely keep me away. To go food may be? Ate there last night and not sure I'll be back. The smothered steak burrito was delicious. The pies we tried for dessert looked really good but tasted differently than we expected. Not knocking them for that, just wasnt we thought they'd taste like. It was the peanut butter pie and the green chili apple pie. Guacamole was good, not bad, but good enough to order again. The green chili stew was totally different and new for us and we really liked it. Biggest knock by far was the service. We decided to sit at the bar instead of waiting for a table around 5 PM. The bartender only sarcastically said it'll be a few minutes. No hi, welcome, how are you etc. We've worked in the industry so we understand what it can be like to be busy. However no one else was at the bar. He only had a few drink orders but appeared to be more worried about stocking the bar for the evening. We received zero conversation from the bartender thru the meal nor recommendations. Later as other people arrived he was suddenly vibrant and energetic with his greetings especially with a girl who sat at the bar. Definitely didn't leave with a feeling like we would be welcome back. The drinks from the bar were solid. Food decent. Dessert not the best in our opinion. Service failed. For that reason we probably wont be back. Spent $60 for two people, not counting tip. What a great find while traveling cross country. Am always amazed that in America, rural or big city we can always find at least one Chinese restaurant and it is almost the same with finding some form of Mexican restaurant. Yes, much of the western USA was Mexico long ago, but the Mexican food reach is profound as exemplified by finding a great Mexican eatery in little old Yukon, Oklahoma. Fantastic! Usually crowded as we were informed as well as experienced during out pleasant 40 minute wait with a bunch of people who just KNEW that it was worth the wait. Skeptical, but hungry, we found out that they were right. Had a marvelous queso with our chips and later did eagerly say "YES" to having our burrito slathered with it. Good choice, although I was tempted to just have a bowl of queso and another basket of chips for dinner. Did opt for enchiladas, trying beef, pork and cheese. Hard to determine which was best, but decided that each was best in their class. Great beans and rice. Wife went for the burrito, of course with the queso that she said she really did not want, but then ate it all and only shared one stingy bite with me. Drinks were margaritas which were just fine. Service truly outstanding and friendly. Given the mob scene at dinner they were amazingly efficient in accommodating all the tables. And air of levity wrapped itself around it as everyone, young & old was enjoying the experience of having home-cooked traditional Mexican dishes that you could get just about anywhere, but the way the Green Chile Kitchen puts them together makes them best of class. What a treat to eat. Funny to say, "When you are in Yukon, OK stop by" but better to say, "Make a point of finding and stopping in Yukon, OK if you even are remotely nearby." Driving from Oklahoma City to Yukon didn't take much time at all. The restaurant really looks nice as you approach it. It has the outdoor patio and looks especially cool at night when it's lit up. When we entered the restaurant we were greeted by friendly staff and were taken to our table. We were brought chips and salsa. The salsa was on the tomato side with not too much personality (think marinara). Kinda of plain Jane. The chips were ordinary. Both could have come of the shelf. I ordered a margarita. I upsized it to a Cadillac. I had to pay extra for that. I was rather underwhelmed when it came in a pretty tiny little mason jar. It did taste good but I couldn't help but think it was the mix that gave the Margarita a good flavor and not too much alcohol. I repeat.....not very much alcohol. I ordered a red enchilada plate with refried beans. The plate comes with a little salad but no Spanish rice. The refried beans were good but thick. As for the enchiladas, I customized my order by asking them to place an egg on top which they were able to do. I thought that was fantastic. However, I was pretty disappointed with the enchilada plate. The corn tortillas were not that soft and there was not that much red chile. During the course of my meal I did take a bite that had a good amount of red chile in it and it was really good. My wife made the comment to me that they might just spoon the red chili on top of the corn tortillas wheras when we make them at home we dip the whole corn tortilla in the red chile. (Hint to restaurant) I ordered the chocolate peanut butter pie. 5 stars on the dessert. Overall I feel I'm being generous with the three stars due to the prices being charged. read more

Overall my experience at the GCK was very good, and I was surprised to see they have two locations in San Fransisco as well as the one in Yukon ( a little odd but read the story posted in the waiting area while you wait and it explains everything). My friends and I arrived on a friday night around 730 and this place was packed!!! It is next to an old school motel on route 66 and the feel of the area is 1930s road trip. The inside is decorated in a rustic chic type of decor which really fit the property well. We were greeted very politely and told it would be a little wait so we walked around and checked out the bar and the display in the entrance. My downfall with this place was the drinks. The margaritas are house made and put in a large jug that dispenses them. Personally I like my margs with no sugar just cointreau, lime juice, and tequila, but theres have a home made simple syrup solution in it as well. I opted for a gin and soda and it was quite week as was my friends rum and coke. Our other friend ordered one of the local beers and loved it. Lesson of the day was beer or margs and you're good, anything else and you'll be disappointed. We were seated and our lovely waitress came over with chips and salsa as well as to take our orders. I got Guac and Queso for the table to go with the chips and salsa. The guac was OK and I probably wouldn't order it again (too bland for my taste). The queso was amazing and I definitely recommend getting it! The table ordered the savory sopapillas, a burrito, and the southwester fajita salad. The first two were also accompanied with the questions "would you like that smothered in queso?" and how can you say no to that!?!?! Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the food and we all wished we had saved room for desert (The cookies in the front looked amazing and Ive heard the pie in a shake is life changing). Came here on a Friday night, but the wait was only about 10-20 minutes. Once seated, we were immediately served chips and salsa. I thought the salsa was pretty good. Not too spicy, but still flavorful. It had a slight hint of a smokey flavor, but so slight it didn't overpower the rest of it. It is a must to get the queso here. They have the beautiful, glorious white queso. Oh thank goodness you exist in Oklahoma! This Texas gal has missed thee! I also had a "cadillac" margarita, which was massive. I rarely have a hard time finishing a single drink, but this one was challenging. It was made well, so it had nothing to do with that. It's just *that* big. For my entree, I had a simple steak quesadilla that came folded in a cool way and tasted good. I'm so glad I found a good Mexican place not too far from home! I must stress again to try the queso. I finally made it to Green Chile Kitchen last night. I have been missing out. The service was fast and EXCELLENT. Since this was my first visit I wasn't sure what to order. There are things on the menu that I have never heard of. The waitress volunteered to bring me a taste of the Carne Avodada before I ordered! After tasting, I did order the Carne Avidada. It is slightly sweet, tender pork with a hint of cinnamon I think. DELICIOUS and came with black beans and rice. The meal came with complementary chips and salsa. We also ordered the Habanero Salsa it was also slightly sweet and spicy but not crazy spicy. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was the price. This barely made 3 stars. My large group of friends came to eat lunch here on a Saturday. It wasn't crowded but they didn't even have our reserved table ready for us until we stood there for 15 minutes. Our waitress did an amazing job for handling a 12 top. The salsa was very good. Not spicy and very tomato based. The chips were a little stale and cold. Not fresh by far. I ordered the rotisserie chicken salad $11 add avocado $1 with the chilli lime dressing. The salad looked beautiful. The chicken was bland along with the dressing and the cucumbers were bitter. Definitely not worth $12. This may be just one of my pet peeves but I find it extremely unprofessional when delivering food to shout out the order to the table and have the customer claim it. Ugh. My friends all ordered burritos which looked really delish. I tried a bite of the breakfast burrito and it was just ok. The tortilla over powered all of the stuffing. For dessert I ordered a slice of apple pie $4. It was the only seriously yummy thing there. You can order a whole pie $20 and take it home. This place had a great feel to it.
