We recently moved to OKC and have been searching for a good Mexican spot, and this place absolutely delivered. The food was authentic, delicious, and everyone we interacted with was incredibly friendly. I always judge a Mexican restaurant by the salsa and beans, and they knocked both out of the park. The chips were thin, salty, and perfectly crisp, and the salsa actually had flavor instead of just heat. I ordered the chile verde and loved that I could request it spicy. The corn tortillas were soft, fresh, and served hot. The rice was good, but the beans were something else entirely--hands down some of the best beans I've ever had. They had a flavor that was completely out of this world. Finding a truly authentic Mexican restaurant can be tough, but this place was exactly what we had been looking for. It's been a while since I was here. The prices have skyrocketed compared to other Mexican spots in the area. Ordered the John's special which is a lot of good but planning on dinner with it as well. Fernando is still a server and the one I would always ask for. Service was quite slow or at least for me. I watched others order after me and get their food before me. The set up is outstanding as is the green hot sauce. Flavors were spot on today. Wasn't very many people there and had Hispanic music playing so the ambiance was good. We were passing through OKC and Los Vaqueros was down the road from the hotel. Reviews sounded promising and the menu was acceptable. I ordered the guiso plate, pork with green sauce on the recommendation of the lady taking my order. My wife got the Lalo Special. We both had to pinch ourselves as we were eating. Had we been this deprived of Mexican food while we were on the road, or was this one of the best meals we've had in a while? We determined it was the best in a while. Let's start with how our to go order worked out. I walked in to order. It took them a little over 10 minutes to get our meal made. It was the cheapest meal we had in a week. The bag was as hot as lava and all I could think about was how the styrofoam must be disintegrating. Wrong! They packed it in foil trays that were still smoking hot when we got back to the hotel. Our order came with chips, a cup of salsa (that was fantastic), and a cup of queso (that was unremarkable, but thoughtful and we still enjoyed it). They were also generous with the tortillas. The green sauce for the pork guiso was perfectly delicious. Tart and spicy, I almost had to lick the pan. My wife shared some of her chicken and enchilada with me. The enchilada cheese was the right amount of firm and flavored. The servings were very generous. read more

The food was excellent. I had the chicken El compadre. This is a dish with a choice of meat, cheese, grilled onions and peppers. The Chino beans are so good! If you have never had them replace the refried beans for Chinos. Chips, salsa and queso are complimentary. They offer other sauces and fried onions and peppers, vegetable relish. For Tex Mex, this place is my favorite. Every time I come here the food and service are great and consistent. They have my absolute favorite version of the chili relleno. The batter stays crunchy even after being cooked and topped with queso. There are options for cheese, chicken, or steak inside. Busy lunch spot. I was disappointed but I ordered a burrito and usually get ground beef. I think I said yes when he repeated the order. I got shredded beef and would be just fine but was a little too red for me. I just ate the rice n beans along with my cooked onions I ordered and all good. My real complaint is mopping floor with strong smell, bleach or something! While I'm eating, is not what I want to smell and even see. I would understand if something was spilled but a larger area was done with customers sitting near. I can't be the only customer that this has bothered! Food and service is usually really good. I got my usual Johns special with chicken but to GO! With a full set up also. I was a little worried it would not be as big in a to go plate (the Johns special. Look it up on the menu. It's very good and very large) but I was not let down. It was just as big. And delicious. It was $13 for a full set up, chips, cheese, salsa with tortillas. I think it was worth it. Once a year I have to order a large quantity of food for a basketball tournament in town. I have used Los Vaqueros for three years now. They have provided me with excellent service, delicious enchiladas, and fair prices. Their prices were about 50% less than a local competitor, and the quality is just as good. This is a great place to dine in, although, the location is not visible from the main road. Locals know it by its reputation for great food and service. I recommend trying it out if you have never been! read more

When I'm in the mood for chips and salsa, this is one of the top places that I turn to. Not only do they bring the chips, salsa and queso pretty much right after you're seated, your food comes out really fast soon after. We placed our orders, then went to town on the chips and salsa. The server kept the refills coming, as we were starving. We didn't go 30 seconds with empty chips or salsa. It was awesome. But of course, we had to breathe, and soon our food arrived. I decided to try something different than my usual chicken enchiladas (which are delicious btw) and ordered a spicy shrimp dish with rice and beans on the side. Not spicy at all, thank goodness, and the sauce paired well with the rice and avocados on the side. It was delightful. My brother ordered the whale on a platter and whoa were we laughing when it came out. It literally hung off the plate it was that big of a fish! And the flavor.. soooo good. Like, extra crunchy chicken wings from wing stop almost. Just when we thought we were done, the server offered sopapillas and of course, we said yes. Always have just enough space for dessert! I'm not the strongest fan of Mexican food but this is hands down my favorite place in the central part of the states (yes I mean states as in US). I went to high school with the owners son/son's wife and she introduced me to them moons ago. I fell in love immediately. Background - I lived with my grandparents and we'd eat at a different place weekly and I'd want to die before going to eat Mexican ever again. I could eat here literally every day. I moved away for 5 years and I would tell everyone from out of state about this place - if they ever come to visit they HAVE to eat here. If anyone asks for Mexican suggestion I ALWAYS tell them to eat here. I've brought so many new people here I feel I should be a sponsor or promoter haha. Always such friendly staff and great food, I've tried almost everything on the menu and haven't found anything I don't like. The margaritas are killer. My only wish is they would do Doordash, Uber Eats, or Grubhub, something like that - I can understand hesitation since it's literally out of their hands once it leaves the restaurant and if something happens it gets blamed on them. - however they do happily accept to go orders and they are quick! Oh man, I feel kind of bad leaving such a poor review, it seems like most people that have frequented this joint love it. But I just did not have that experience. It's a little unfair of me, because I'm from Texas, but I'm not sure how this is considered Mexican food. It was awful. My husband and I both ordered enchiladas, I got chicken fajitas and he got beef. Both meats tasted rubbery, almost like they had been over cooked and then microwaved later. So nasty. After our pastor spoke so much about Mexican food, my husband and I began searching for nearby places on Yelp to try. We went right after church which was a bit busy, but not a terrible wait. The staff is extremely friendly. After 10-15 minutes we were seated and given our menus. They have a lunch special that's primarily for the weekday, but can be ordered if you add a $1. Within a minute or two of sitting down, a plate of chips, salsa, queso and soft tortillas came out. Needless to say, we were all hungry (I'm preggers)---including our year old son. Coming from the east coast I never had authentic Mexican and this was very good! From some of the previous reviews, native Californians might have a different opinion about the food. I think it's important to note how big Mexico as a country is, and the diversity in culture. There's going to be differences. The portions were super plentiful. Our son couldn't finish his baby tamales dish! Regardless of how busy it was our waiter was extremely attentive. We never felt rushed and enjoyed a very very tasty meal. Los Vaqueros is my hands down favorite Mexican restaurant. Their staff is so friendly, it's locally owned, and the food is delicious. If you go during a busy time, like lunch or dinner, your wait won't be long and you will get your food so fast. Complimentary salsa, queso, chips, and flour tortillas are included as long as you order a meal. I really like that they give you your own salsa and queso and that you don't have to share with other people. Because, double dipping and who wants to share queso when you're perfectly capable of eating your own? Am I right? Their lunch specials are reasonably priced and under $10. I tend to choose the chicken enchiladas or quesadilla for lunch. My dinner go to is the Lalo Special with all chicken. So yummy. It has grilled veggies and chicken mixed together, a taco, an enchilada, rice, beans, and guacamole. The portion is large and I always have to get a to go box. read more
