Susie's was a lovely dinner with a casual but beautiful open air garden/patio setting. The owner apparently feeds a good number of street cats and we loved the additional company. Our waitress (Heather maybe?) was incredible, giving us menu suggestions as well as tips for our visit to Culebritas we had planned for the next day. She was super friendly and we enjoyed chatting with her and learning a little of the history of the restaurant. The food was mostly amazing- we loved the escargot, it was a different preparation than I've had before with a sort of buttery herby sauce. Also loved the sides, the beans and rice were top notch and the mixed mash was very fun and interesting though a little dry without sauce- delicious with some sauce from other dishes. I heard very good things about the chicken and shrimp; unfortunately one star off as my husband and I bought got the Mahi-mahi and it was rather chewy and tough. The flavor was there but didn't really enjoy the texture. I would 100% go back and get the shrimp though!

We started with a bottle of wine similar to a Chardonnay. But let's talk food. I ordered the escargot. If you know anything about me it's that I absolutely love escargot. I will order them any where I can. I have tried them everywhere from NY to Ca and even Spain and Italy. Susies hands down wins in this category. The butter garlic combination is amazingly delicious. And they don't skimp on the escargot. There's plenty of them unlike other places that count them. The service at Susie's? As friendly and as personable as you want. Every one is happy and pleasant but then again you live on the best island that has the #3 best beach (Flamenco). I had the machi machi. Excellent choice! Plus the rice and beans which I grew up on, however they did not make them with sofrito which is really the secret ingredient to making them. But still delicious nonetheless. Over all, I'll continue to visit Susies each day every time I'm here. Since it was my birthday we ordered the Carmel cheese cake to go. Because some things need to be eaten in private. Shhh....

What started as a chance meeting with Zeny turned into one of the more memorable dining experiences…read morein town. She runs a small, largely one-person operation, and that personal touch shows in both the atmosphere and the food. Her cooking reflects a traditional, family-style Dominican approach--simple, authentic, and done right. We ordered the pollo guisado (stewed chicken), which was rich and comforting. I opted for something lighter with shrimp in butter, served alongside fresh vegetables, rice, and beans. The meal was rounded out with a generous portion of plantains. A key point to understand before going: this is not a rushed dining experience. Service moves at a slower, island pace, so adjust expectations accordingly and settle in. Also, check hours in advance, as they are not consistent day-to-day. If you go in with the right mindset, Zeny's offers a genuine, unfiltered local experience that's increasingly hard to find.

The next day, my husband and I went back and I got the fried tilapia entrée with rice planted, and it was just as good. If not better than the day before. If you're lucky you're able to meet Miss Zeny and she is amazing. She will take good care of you while in her restaurant. This is a great local restaurant and you feel the love soon as you want. If you're on Saint Croix Island Go check out Zenys restaurant.
