I have now frequented the greater Boston stage company multiple times. I have enjoyed various plays and just want to say that the performances here are fabulous. This is an awesome venue with a small crowd with top end performances. Kudos to all the actors and actresses that have participated in the 2024 season. You all did a fabulous job. I'd also like to thank The Wonderette's for including me in their performance, it will be the highlight of my Christmas season. Thank you very much.. As for the venue, they have a small gift shop with wonderful trinkets to remember your time at the theater. The box office is usually open at the beginning of any performances last minute tickets sales are usually available. There was also a wonderful snack bar with some great homemade goodies and drinks. The staff is always very polite and accommodating. I highly advise anyone that has not visited to make it a point to purchase some tickets to a show here you will be very pleased. FYI, I believe it's only on street parking. Just come a little bit early to secure a spot on the street close to the theater. read more

Box office was very helpful. All the seats have excellent sight lines. The seats are comfortable. I have seen four productions there and they all have been entertaining and totally professional. The actors and sets have been high quality. They are equal to any play you might see in Boston or New York. The tickets are excellent value for the money. So glad a friend of mine recommended this place playing a take on Hitchcock's "The 39 steps". What a crew and energetic show. The place is squeaky clean and theatre is so beautiful. Located in the center of Stoneham parking is ample around the theatre. Concessions are not available however you can get dinner before in a few restaurants surrounding the theatre. The show runs for around 2 hrs and 5 mins with a 15 mins break at the hour mark. Primarily focused on the main character which stays constant with 3 other actors playing multiple characters throughout the play. The stage is beautiful and the music is a nod to the bygone era with a mix of even the classic spaghetti westerns. They do check your vaccination cards for you to go in which is great knowing all the people are safe. Will definitely keep an eye out for their other productions. read more

Review: An Irish Carol - Greater Boston Stage Company The Greater Boston Stage Company's (GBSC) production of Matthew Keenan's An Irish Carol attempts to bring a Dickensian tale to an Irish pub setting, but ultimately falls short due to what feels like lazy and underdeveloped writing, a particular disappointment given Ireland's rich literary heritage. A Necessary Advisory The show's existing advisory about "a bit of colorful language" is a massive understatement and needs to be revised for future audiences. I believe a more accurate warning would be: Advisory: RATED R for pervasive and gratuitous foul language. A Disappointment in Writing It is truly disheartening to witness a professional theatre company like GBSC produce a script with such terrible writing, especially when one considers that Ireland has given the world some of its most eloquent and profound writers and poets (Yeats, Joyce, Wilde, Heaney, etc.). While a pub setting naturally implies a certain coarseness of speech, the script's constant and repetitive foul language seemed to be a substitute for genuine wit, character development, or strong dialogue. Instead of feeling authentic, the writing felt cheapened and uninspired. ‍‍‍ Concern for the Audience My empathy goes out to the families who brought their children, expecting perhaps a spirited, humorous, and colorful theatrical experience. What they were subjected to was a barrage of language that crossed the line from "colorful" into genuinely offensive and unnecessary territory. To live in a world where such writing is produced and accepted as entertainment is a regrettable reflection on the standards we sometimes set for the arts. read more

I figured that Stoneham's gotta be far away. It sounded familiar enough (Stoneham Zoo) that I knew it was in Massachusetts, however, I couldn't place it on an unlabeled map if my life depended on it. Someone told me, however, that they had recently enjoyed both the "Million Dollar Quartet" and a play about two wonderful older actresses at a bowling alley. So when I noticed an email in my inbox mentioning the show "Last Night at Bowl-Mor Lanes" playing at the Greater Boston Stage Company, I decided to look up the theater on Google Maps, and was surprised to find that it was under 20 minutes north of Boston (depending on traffic and starting point of course). The drive over from the city at night on a weekend was pretty easy. Local street parking is marked 2 hour parking. I parked anyways since the show had a 90 min run-time. But as I chatted with a fellow patron while waiting in line to pick up my pre-purchased ticket, he mentioned that he never had trouble parking on the local streets over 2 hours at night. So that made me feel better. I felt even better when the person behind the window told me that the 2 hour limit was not in affect on weekends and evenings after perhaps 6pm. The lobby of the Greater Boston Stage Company was rather intimate and nicely decorated for the show. Concessions had some drinks with fun names specifically alluding to the show as well. The stage was well decorated for the show, and I enjoyed the performance tremendously! read more

When I inquired with the Boston Stage Company staff member as to "where the ladies room was located" the staff member replied " you can go in there" pointing towards a doorway where a man was entering. When I looked at the door, it was labeled gender neutral bathroom. I kindly informed the employee that I was very uncomfortable going into that bathroom, and I would not be following a man into the restroom. I went to a show at the Boston Stage Company with 4 other women, one being 8 months pregnant. Women should not be forced to share the same restroom with a man If they don't want to. Our friend, who was 8 months pregnant, left immediately after the show to drive home to use her own restroom. The rest of us decided to find a nice restaurant in the area that had ladies and men's restrooms available for their patrons. I will not be attending any more shows at the Boston Stage Company - they went out of their way to label "ALL" of their restrooms gender neutral. Women and children, boys & girls deserve privacy. read more

Place was fun and clean,.great choice of snacks, and beer, but the fact is, im absolutely disgusted at the gender neutral restrooms. I understand gender neutral if it's 1 toilet, but these are full on restrooms and I didn't feel comfortable being in the same rest room as a female and my wife certainly didn't enjoy a man walking in with our little girl in there. I went to the box office today, the nicest lady Carol was at the window she helped me immensely with deciding which shows to purchase in a membership for my daughter who has a disability she took her time and explained with plays would be good for her and suitable to her likes. Very clean and intimate little theater. I saw a few shows here and two were really good and one I didn't care for so much. It wasn't that the acting was bad in the show I didn't care for, I simply didn't like the play in general. Maybe it means that I am uncultured if I don't like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat played by a little kid that creeps me out with his feminism... or maybe it means that I'm not Michael Jackson... either way the play sucked. This is a great place to bring a date and it is located in a great spot in downtown Stoneham. There are some really good restaurants close by so it makes for a good night... that and I live stumbling distance from the place, so I am always down for a close date night. read more

If you enjoy great theater, you have to check out Stoneham Theatre. A really great lineup of professional theater + various concerts. I love that it is a fraction of the cost of a comparable show in Boston with free parking all over the place and great restaurants nearby. Just this year I've seen everything from a really cool modern take on Shakespeare, a dark theater adaptation of a film noir classic, to a large-scale musical (which I go to see tomorrow). They also bring all kinds of concert acts that remind me of Vegas-style entertainment. I've found tickets to run in the $40s- but you can get the show tickets for only $25 if you do a certain kind of membership and I've noticed they often have different packages for multiple shows. I recently paid $120 for a show in Boston, add to that $20 for parking and I have to say I am feeling the love for Stoneham Theatre, lol! Really worth checking out! read more

What a little gem! I went today for the first time and was pleasantly surprised from the comfort of the seats to the ultra clean ladies' room to the quality of the performance. I am going to become a subscriber for the next season. There is also a wonderful program and performances for children in the summer. Great place to see theater instead of driving into Boston or Beverly. I have seen 4 shows and every time have been not been greeted with hospitality. That's why I am at at 3star. I once got discount tickets and when I questioned why the seats where so terribly high back when open seats where available I was reminded that seats cost $50 & I didn't pay full price. I love the local community idea but for a little bit of a longer drive I'd rather be treated like a customer they want at other theaters. I'll only go here if it's a must. read more

Love love loved the Million Dollar Quartet! The music was phenomenal and sounded just like the recordings from Sun Studios. The musicians playing the instruments were just incredible --every one of them. I went with friends to see this show last night and am planning to go again next week with my husband and kids. Even though I've only been twice, both shows were fantastic! They guy playing George Bailey nearly channeled Jimmy Stewart.

I took my daughter to see "Lobster Girl" on Saturday and we were so happy that we went. It was laugh out loud funny. I was thoroughly entertained with this creative production. read more

"Alter Boyz": This does not belong in the regular season. Should be a summer show. A cross between "Nunsense" and "Forever Plaid."

This was our first time at the Stoneham Theatre very comfortable the show was very disappointing. I was at times very confused who the actors were suppose to be. There were some costumes and props but the casts were not who you would have expected to be. The costumes were bright colored summer attire with half shirts. I don't remember these in mary poppins. There were a couple of girls playing a part by walking with mean faces and hunched over again not sure who they were. I have to say the vocal part of the show was very good. A little girl in front of us kept asking when the show would be over. This was a gift for my mother I wish it was a little more enjoyable for her I could tell it was not what she had expected. We have seen a mary poppins play before and really do love plays. A co-worker had mentioned she saw the play north of Boston and it was exceptionally good that she bought tickets for the week after I went. I hope it is what she expects. e worker read more

Very nice theater. We are Billy Joel fans and went to see the Movin' Out Band, The acoustics were absolutely terrible. Much too loud for a venue that size and the mikes were muffled so that we could not understand the lyrics. The owner said that they were going to try to work on the sound system during intermission, but our ears were ringing so we left. Disappointed with the show not the theater. read more
