It's a lovely shop. I wish that the yarn was organized by weight as it can be a little difficult finding what you want. The staff is incredible though! The lady that was there was juggling customers while filling orders and not once did she lose her grace in customer service. She was so wonderful I was actually a little embarrassed because I was horribly indecisive that day. She never seemed to mind though. The only thing that detracts from the shop are the prices. BEST yarn store! They have such a huge selection of every color, style and variety of yarns. I especially appreciate the selection of blends - I knit a ton of baby blankets and new mothers need machine wash and dryable. Great Yarns always has enough yarn in every color - multiple lots in the same dye lot. Service is great. Fontelle is so helpful as are her employees. I am so thankful for their help with determining which yarn is appropriate and how much to buy. I drive past many yarn stores (25 miles) to shop here. Prices are great, notions are great. I have always had good experiences going into this store. I love that it is in an old house. The yarn selection is extensive! They have everything you could ever want in this store-- and every color. In my experience, the gals who work here are friendly. And they definitely know their stuff. I am an amateur knitter, and they were very helpful in picking out the right yarn and such. The prices are kind of high, but I did some research, and the only place I could find that was cheaper is online. I guess that's just the nature of the beast. I love to knit. I have recently gotten back into knitting a ton. When I first went to Great Yarns, I was marveled by how much beautiful yarn they have. The staff is very helpful when they see you wandering around looking perplexed. I have never had a bad experience here. An old (self-admitted) lady will spin hanks into balls - I LOVE this. She is a hoot! She also lives behind the yarn shop, which is pretty neat. They have a really great array of Cascade 220 yarn. I love going in to look at all the yarn and touch and feel it. One negative is that they are expensive! When I discovered buying yarn online, I was amazed at how much cheaper it is! But, online there is no way to get the full experience of feeling the yarn you are going to buy. read more

I went in looking for a set of needles (which they didn't have), but was welcomed in such a friendly manner that I spent a half hour perusing and ended up treating myself to some b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l alpaca sock yarn. The shop is located in an older Victorian style home, packed to the ceilings with rainbows of yarn, and staffed by super cheerful and helpful knitters. You'll be attended to straight away, and then left to browse and stroke fibers on your own (which I appreciate). I overheard them enthusiastically assisting a customer who was just sitting at the table working on a project, and my cashier offered to wind my skein before I left. The pricing is in line with average LYS price points -- it's quality yarn and you're going to pay more for natural fibers, hand-dyed, etc. With respect, I must assume that the folks comparing pricing to Jo-Ann are beginner knitters; you can't compare what you're buying at a chain to your LYS. All yarns are not created equal! As a small biz owner myself I love to patronize a local business, especially one that supports creativity in our community. Beautiful, luxurious, hard-to-find yarns. Unbeatable selection. Out of the way location - house/cottage atmosphere. Two levels including the "bargain basement". Superfriendly, talkative, and attentive staff. The ladies (Wifey and Mom) loved it! Side note: Parking - and a small, cute gate which serves as entry to the property - is in a 2-vehicle carport along an alley (purportedly called "White Alley") behind the building. I love this store. I have always felt welcomed as a friend as well as a customer. The staff are all experts and can help with unusual yarns, patterns and projects. They are helpful without being pushy, kind at every turn and willing to help with problems in between customers. It is a busy place, yet I have never felt rushed. I have often brought my project into the shop just to knit with others in the afternoons and have developed friendships with a wide variety of interesting women. This is a wonderful yarn shop for those looking for an extensive range of yarns - they have all the highest quality yarns of the best materials as well as some more mid-range yarns. Do not expect to find Wal-Mart quality yarn here, nor will you find Wal-Mart quality assistance. The shopkeepers are very experienced knitters and know the their fibers!. My first visit I was a little wary because I am very new to yarn arts, I felt welcomed and appreciated, every question was taken seriously and answered to their best of their experience (which is way above mine!). I have encountered the ladies who come in to knit and chat, they were very friendly and invited me to join them. My schedule just hasn't allowed that so far - but I hope to sometime in the future. I have returned multiple times and just love the basement area where you can find tons of great yarn and previous store samples for sale. I have purchased and loved several scarves, vests and hats that I couldn't crochet or knit myself for the price. All very beautifully crafted with quality yarn and expert stitchery. Im all about nice yarn on the super cheap I always thought jo Anne's is expensive omg 20$ a skein . Honestly so if your looking for high end go for it beautiful yarn service is great but only if your willing to spend. If your looking they'll leave you alone. I liked the place parking sucks but honestly I just cant get past the 15$ price range. I buy the same thing for less than half the price. I live in Mukilteo. Great Yarns is the place in the Everett where I prefer to buy yarn. They don't sell junk, so be prepared to pay for what you get. I've been visiting the shop for 12yrs, and, oh my, what a wonderful selection! Each room of this converted turn-of-the-century shotgun house is a yarn lover's paradise. The owner and staff are appreciative of what they have and know a knitter can't resist touching everything. So if you have clean hands, you can touch away. Yarns are appropriately sorted by weights, fiber, color and novelty. There are adequate amounts of yarn for most project completions. Don't have enough of what you want? They'll order it. Some people think the lack of large windows makes the store a bit dark, but I prefer the ambience to that of a sterile, open, faceless store space. This place has "rooms" to discover! Visit the basement, that's where the bargains are. The drawbacks are, lack of parking and steps. You can usually park in front, in the rear, or if you are willing to walk a block you can find a place to park near all of the medical clinics on the next street over. The other drawback is steps. There are no wheelchair ramps, but the stairs are not insurmountable even for someone with a bad hip like me. The handrails are sturdy and strong. The steps are solidly in place, even the ones leading to the bargain basement. They sponsor Erin Bears and display the beautiful projects before they are given to traumatized children. Our knitting group gets huge bags of bears and lots of free yarn to dress the bears with from Great Yarns. The bears are shown on their website as well. While you are craning your neck to look up and down the shelves of yarn, you'll notice sample sweaters, vests, etc. The teachers here are experts! If you want to learn a technique they have classes. They can calculate the amount needed for a project and accept the return of untouched yarn as long as you save the receipt and haven't had the yarn wound into a pull ball. I've always been treated nicely at this store. They aren't pushy. They get busy and sometimes can't help you right away. Be patient. Their staff is small, but very helpful. read more

Called Great Yarns in Everett and asked them if they carried a specific brand and color of yarn I wanted to use in a project for my daughter who requested I make a blanket in these specific colors. I needed 24 scans of the 3 colors. They said they carried the brand and the colors I was looking for and they had enough in stock to cover my request. I said, "I'm on my way"! Walked in the door 20 minutes later. The women looked up and said, "did you just call for yarn in stock"? I said, "Yes! with a big smile" She said, "Oh, I'm just selling what you needed to this woman". "I can order what you need and you can get it in the next few weeks". What????!!!!!!! I'm upset. They sold the yarn I said I was on my way for??? Why would you do that? They just lost a great customer. I have plans to make all the kids in the family afghans for Christmas after I finished my daughters. I'll never go back. That was just horrid customer service. Not even an apology. I just wasted an hour and now my project is on hold until I can get into Seattle to Pacific Fabrics who carry fabulous fabrics and yarns. Horrid customer service. Horrid place. I ordered from Great Yarns online store. They have fabulous selection of high-end yarns that are very beautiful, and which I was eager to use in my knitting. Unfortunately, this store does not seem to be able to manage online retailing. I ordered one skein of Prism yarn approaching 3 weeks ago now. Having not received it about 10 days after my order, I emailed the shop to inquire. They told me that the yarn I ordered was out of stock (which was NOT noted on their website, and it allowed me to order the yarn anyway), so they had to order it from the yarn producer. Another week went by and I still had not received the yarn, so I emailed them again this a couple of days ago and they told me it was en route. AND YET I HAVE STILL NOT RECEIVED IT! Unless they sent the yarn on the back of a tortoise, it should not take this long to arrive in the mail. Absolutely unacceptable! This place needs to learn how to update its website to reflect what is in/out of stock. I will never order from them again! read more

Holy yarn goodness! I went to Great Yarns today for the first time and was very impressed by their selection. I'm excited that they have an excellent range of yarn, for example they have Cascade 220 (a classic staple) but the also have Jade Sapphire Mongolian Cashmere (heaven in a hank). Despite all the temptation I behaved myself ! I purchased a skein of Frolicking Feet by Done Roving Yarns in a gorgeous variegated teal and a pattern for a cowl. As someone who works retail I really appreciate great customer service. The staff were genuinely friendly, approachable, helpful, attentive and made my friend and I feel welcome. I popped in here completely spontaneously. The yarns are attractively arranged and so fun to touch. The sale yarns are located in the annex downstairs, and there were plenty of kinds to choose. They have beautiful garments displayed for sale. The prices are comparable to other quality yarn stores. I saw several ladies ready to answer any questions I had. They didn't pressure me and let me explore at my own pace. They wound my yarn into balls for me before I left. I really appreciated that. Cool and comfortable overall. You have to be willing to pay more than 100% acrylic yarn prices, but the quality fiber is worth it. read more

My sister and I visited the Great Yarns booth at Stitches West. I had already spent ~$40 on yarn (and a pattern) for a scarf. We returned to the booth and were prepared to purchase yarn and two other patterns (Wrapped in Alpaca, Alpaca Angles Jacket) that would have totaled around $350 total. The people working the booth could not have been less helpful or welcoming. We had to repeatedly ask them to help us and, when asking questions, we got short 1-word answers. My sister and I looked at each other and just walked away. Our feeling was that no one was interested in selling us anything and we were not interested in convincing them to do so. The pattern I did buy is unclear with no photos and I'm having some trouble getting started. I have been trying to send them a note to clarify it and possibly get a photo, but their website won't accept the message because the "spam filter installed on the site is currently unavailable." So, apparently, they are virtually uninviting as well. I spend a lot of money on yarn and patterns but I won't be spending it at this store. read more

I first visited this store on the Local Yarn Store Tour and immediately got a warm fuzzy feeling. The staff was very friendly, welcoming and knowledgible. Today I called them because I was looking for a hard to find size of needles. They didn't have what I was looking for but called me back a few minutes later to say they'd found a set that included the size I needed. They didn't know me and got my phone number from the caller ID. Now that's what I call service! Of course, I purchased the set and will definately go back. The only reason they didn't get 5 stars is because they aren't wheelchair accessible. it's not really their fault since its an old house and I'm not sure how or where they would add a ramp but it's a shame they are missing out on the business of some people because of accessiblity. read more

On a recent trip to Washington state I had the opportunity to visit Great Yarns. Set on a busy street in a stand alone house this shop is easy to find. When I entered I was greeted with a smile and welcome. I asked for a general description of the stores layout which the woman was happy to give me. An added bonus was the computer station and printer where I could go to my Ravelry page, order and pay for patterns and print them out on the spot. I was very impressed with the yarn inventory, there truly were many choices for any knitter from the most discriminating cashmere consumer to the knitter just looking for a good yarn to make a baby shower present. I was helped immensely by a woman named Jan who helped me select yarn for two projects. Her color sense and knitting experience were very evident and I understood why she was recommending certain yarns for my projects. In the end I purchased three patterns, and all the yarn I needed for a shawl and a stole. I spent a fair amount of money but as an experienced knitter I also knew that I paid a very fair price for very good quality. I am never sorry when I purchase good quality and I know my projects will be pieces I will use and wear for years to come. Great store, big yarn selection, knowledgeable staff, what more could a knitter ask for? read more

It's a cute little house turned knitting store on the corner of 41st and Rucker. I am a knitter and I am so lucky to have Fontelle Jones and her fellow knit bitches at Great Yarns. They are always willing to help me when I'm stuck on something or teach me an easier way to do what I'm doing. It's fun to just go in and sit around the table with them and shoot the breeze. Great Yarns! has a good selection of moderate-to-high end yarns. They definitely fill a niche. The staff varies, with some more helpful than others, but in general the atmosphere is relaxed and not pushy. If you have a question or need assistance, they are more then helpful in my experience, but in general you need to ask them--they rarely come around asking people if they need help. Frankly, I prefer that--if I'm in the middle of a reverie, trying to decide just what I want, I don't want to be interrupted every few minutes. The owner, Fontelle, is especially knowledgeable and helpful. The staff are also very tolerant of my kids, who want to go play around looking at all the colorful yarn (both of my kids are fascinated with yarn & fiber arts...go figure!). They do behave themselves, but even so, I realize that not all shops would be as tolerant and friendly towards my kids as the staff here is, and I very much appreciate them for it. They also are helpful with special orders. They teach classes here, as well. I took the knitting basics class over 20 years ago, and Fontelle was an excellent instructor. read more
