Came here twice over the past few months, once for brunch and once for dinner. So impressed to have this quality of food at a purely plant-based restaurant. I think it's excellent in general, not just compared to other vegan restaurants. I give Great Sage 5 stars, meaning everything was tasty and I was impressed. Well balanced flavor in all the dishes. Cheese didn't feel oily or fake, just nice and creamy. Staff is great. Space feels clean and open. Wish it was a little cheaper so I could come more often. However FYI - happy hour on M-F 3-6pm where tapas are $6 instead of $9 and appetizers are $12 instead of $18. Definitely makes it more doable! read more

Hey friends! This is an unfortunate review. So, the first time I visited Great Sage, I felt the sense that I wasn't welcomed. More particularly, because of my race. I didn't comment nor react to that feeling as I didn't have hard evidence as the staff did not blatantly do/say anything to me. Fast forward, to a year later at my next visit. That feeling was confirmed. Both times I visited with my godmother, who is Caucasian. My issue is with the hostess and NOT the entire staff. It started when we entered and my godmother was greeted warmly and I got a side eye. Hmmm. When we were leaving, I was walking in front of my godmother, she was about two feet behind me. The hostess say absolutely nothing me as I walk by but says "have a great night" to my godmother. To me, these were blatant acts telling me that I was not welcomed. This is unacceptable and unfortunate. Everyone should be allowed and feel welcomed in any establishment regardless of race. This behavior from the hostess was disappointing. My hubby is dabbling in vegetarian cuisine and this restaurant felt like jumping into the deep end for me. This is my second time here. This restaurant is quiet even when half full. The customer conversations are intimate whispers. Our waiter seated us and checked on each of his tables. Our food arrived quickly and the dishes were cleared in a timely manner. My sister introduced me to Great Sage about 4 or 5 years ago. It was love at first bite, lol. I haven't been in months but Saturday morning while perusing TikTok, someone posted about having gone and immediately I knew that would be dinner. OMG! I love this restaurant and I really wish I lived here, so that I could come visit regularly. As a human being with a dairy allergy, vegan restaurants are the one place I don't have to worry about cross contamination or a forgotten modification to my meal. Great Sage has a well rounded menu, with options to satisfy every palette. I ordered a side order of the vegan Mac and cheese (an absolute requirement in my opinion), the chana masala, and the harvest wrap. I would order each of these dishes again, but I will have to venture to try the pierogi quesadilla, crab cakes and portabella-bulgogi bowl first. The mac and cheese was exceptionally cheesy and creamy, with a perfectly crisp crumb topping. They have a full size serving of this, but despite how great it was, I would highly recommend ordering it as a side item as it is filling, and then ordering an entre as well. The chana masala had a wonderful flavor to it, with the chickpeas cooked perfectly! As for the harvest wrap, I was in heaven! The wrap was toasted just right and all the ingredients were the same temp. I found the sweet potato to be the perfect texture and it paired well with the beets, caramelized onion and chipotle-cashew Gouda. They had a wonderful drink menu as well, however, I did not order a drink this visit. There is a 99% chance I will at my next visit though. The inside was clean and well maintained, while the outside had plenty of parking. The service was quick and knowledgeable of the menu. I will definitely be back! I hadn't visited The Great Sage is over 10 years, and it still doesn't miss! Since it had been a while, we opted for the Ultimate nachos and Artichoke spinach dip to start. As a nut allergy girlie, they kindly removed the cashew cheese that honestly would have put a on top of the dip but it was tasty nonetheless. The crab cake consistency was one of a pulled crab cake meat kind of action - a bit too tangy for me, so soaking the hearts of palm a bit longer would have helped. I LOVED the remoulade and pretzel bun, yum! The Nachos speak for themselves, 11/10! I came here with ny fiance and a friend not entirely knowing what to expect. I am vegetarian and they both eat meat but were game to try a vegan place. When we arrived only the brunch menu was available. I feel like there are two types of vegan places: 1) places that specialize in meat alternatives and 2) places that specialize in vegetable-forward dishes that are not necessarily trying to approximate meat. I personally prefer the latter because I feel like fake meat will never live up to real meat so it doesn't make sense to try to make then something they're not. However, the Great Sage is the former, with brunch menu offerings featuring Just Egg, Umaro Bacon and veggie sausage. Almost all the items were featured at least one meat substitute. This isn't an inherently bad thing, and some people probably prefer this style of vegan food. I just say this so you know how to set your expectations. With all that in mind, I think the Great Sage did a really thoughtful job of putting together menu items that creatively used the vegan materials at their disposal, and it is clear that they focused on choosing the highest quality vegan meat alternatives they could. I have had plenty of fake bacon before but had not had Umaro bacon previously and it was a standout. Apparently it is made with seaweed? While a meat eater would immediately know it isn't actual bacon, I would say this is the best substitute I have had. I also thought the croissants in my croissant sandwich dish were pretty good for not being made with actual butter. Portions looked deceptively small but, remember, meat substitutes are usually packed with fiber and protein, so we ended up quite sated. My fiance couldn't finish his Kale scramble, which was also pretty flavorful. The carnivores left feeling like they enjoyed their meal and it was worth going so that is a win. Service was fine and the space was pretty casual but comfy. If I happen to be in the area again I would be interested in coming back to try lunch or dinner. If you are vegetarian or vegan, or just otherwise interested in cutting back on meat consumption and want to check out substitutes, this place is good to have on your radar. read more

Upon first bite I thought "this is pretty good -- solid" and then as I kept eating it just continued to taste even better. Creamy, rich, and tasty. If I'm nitpicking, I wish the broccoli were cut smaller so I didn't have to cut it, but who gives a flip when it tastes this good?! I need help understanding the hype of this place. It was a front-runner in the DMV's organic green/vegan cuisine. Other than that, I wasn't a fan. I ordered their famous Crab Cake Platter.. made with hearts of palm crab cake on a bed of roasted asparagus and a succotash composed of lima beans, roasted corn, caramelized onion, red pepper, and grape tomatoes. Topped with Old Bay remoulade and microgreens. (Wheat, soy, and nut free) The meal has no flavor. The succotash is good, but that's not saying much. The crab cake needs seasoning: garlic, old bay, or something that tastes beside the remoulade. In a complete meal, each component should be seasoned well. I ordered the adult mac & cheese, and that was pretty decent. It consists of baked casserole with rigatoni, broccoli, cannellini beans, pepperoncini, spinach, and sundried tomatoes in a velvety cheese sauce, topped with Daiya mozzarella, rosemary bread crumbs, and truffle oil. I admit, i am not what I would consider a practicing vegetarian so some of the flavor profiles take a bit to get used to. The Sage's Famous Carrot Cake is their spiced carrot cake topped with cream cheese frosting and chopped walnuts (wheat free). It was amazed at the density of the slice. That had me excited. Upon tasting, the blandness was the overwhelming feeling. One of the moistest cakes has always been a carrot cake. Not THIS carrot cake. It was incredibly dry. I don't know if it's because it's missing an oil or eggs to keep it moist but I did not enjoy the cake at all. The icing, however, was DELICIOUS!!! Regretfully, my selection was a miss... We decide on an impromptu Mother's Day lunch here. I called around 11:30am and asked if they had availability at 1pm. They said the restaurant is all booked but outdoor seating might be open. We arrived at 12:58pm and they were able to seat us immediately. The outdoor patio is very cute and has umbrellas to block out the sun. Our server was also the same person who sat us and we were told the restaurant is slammed and people are working multiple roles. No worries, we expected it on Mother's Day. We placed our order for: Artichoke dip with crostini Nachos with blackened chicken Bean burger (non-gluten bread rather than a bun) The thing about this place is they can pretty much cater to all your dietary needs. My wife who is on a specific diet at the moment was able to eat everything. They even accommodated the crostini with a gluten free option for her. Everything tasted great and you would never be able to guess it's vegan 99% of the time (except the blackened chicken). This place is under new management and has definitely improved over the last few months. We did carryout from here a few times last year and were really turned off by the mandatory 15% tip on ALL carryout orders. I have only had fantastic dining experiences at Great Sage. This is a 100% vegan business that will completely change how you perceive vegan food. Their meals are flavorful, hearty, and at a reasonable price point considering the portion size being very generous. When you walk into Great Sage you are welcomed by a full service bar. It is so rare for a vegan business to have beer, wine, and liquor. This is truly a gem in the vegan community. The interior is pretty spacious. They can certainly accommodate a reservation of 12 people, however they are better suited for group sizes of 6 and less. They also have outdoor seating available for those that do not enjoy indoor dining. I ordered a mocktail that was a matcha latte with CBD. The mocktail was served hot and gave me the best calming effect. I felt like I was on vacation. I highly recommend this drink. My husband ordered a beer and was very content with his draft. We visited on Sunday so we ordered a Just Burrito from the brunch menu, and loaded cheese fries from their standard menu. We licked all the plates clean! For the Just Burrito I love that it has sweet potato inside. It adds a little bit of sweet to this savory meal. We drowned the burrito in the side of queso and ate this with a fork and knife. We also used the chips to scoop up every last bite. This meal on its own would be much too large for me to finish on my own. It is priced at $19 and I feel like that is fair since it is about 1.5 meals for me. The loaded fries were smothered in queso and chili. The only downside to this meal was all the fries were soft. With such heavy and wet ingredients, no fry had a chance at staying crispy. The flavors were all so delicious I did not care much about the texture. I just wanted it all in my belly! I really like that Great Sage's queso is a classic vegan queso. It does not taste like it is trying to be authentic queso. It clearly has a bunch of nutritional yeast, and simply tastes comforting and delicious. I could drink that queso I love it so much. I used my Green Rewards Discount for being a Veg Society of DC member, and after the 10% off, our bill was $51. For two large meals and two drinks at an all vegan business I felt that was extremely fair. I will most definitely return to Great Sage sooner rather than later. I'm not vegan, but occasionally I like to get some kudos in my health bar. If you're vegan and/or gluten free then this is the place to be. The food was surprisingly flavorful. And although the Adult Mac and Cheese didn't quite taste cheesy enough to me, it hit the spot and the gluten free pasta was just right. The Thai Green Curry was also nice, although the tofu was flavorless, and the broccoli needed to be a little smaller. I wish I could give higher stars, but unfortunately we were really disappointed by customer service... lovely people, but they all seemed so inattentive tonight? It took all too long to get seated. I found a new gem. A Vegan organic restaurant. That has a beautiful decor. They also offer outdoor dining options. Now how did I find it! I really wish I found it sooner. So glad that I did. While having a conversation with one of my co-workers. She swore she would never eat meat again. Now I don't believe that but I love vegan options as well. Especially when it's cooked with love and flavor. Will I turn 100% vegan? Probably not because I simply love poultry but the menu definitely caught my eye. I'm willing to do 50/50. They have a variety of dishes that make you feel like you're eating one of your favorites. The menu is very intensive with a nice bar area for all your alcoholic beverages if you choose to do so. We tried the Buffalo bites. The breading was nice and crunchy. So delicious, it came with a side order of dressing and buffalo sauce and celery. Now for the main course. I tried the heart of Palm crabcake platter. IT WAS SUPURB!! Cooked perfectly overtop of a bed of vegetables and asparagus. I placed my order to go but just in conversation the staff was very nice and had recommendations. I also tried the peanut butter chocolate dipped giant cookie. That was so good I wouldn't even let my husband try it. I wanted it all to myself. I am in the area at least twice month. So I will be checking out some of the other options on the menu. We didn't have a wait but they do close at 8 so definitely come a bit earlier than you might expect for dinner. My friends and I came for Vegan Restaurant Month but unfortunately none of the servers knew it was going on and there were no special menu items for it. Nonetheless, the food and drinks were great, especially for being plant based! We split the spinach artichoke dip and it was actually so good, served with crusty bread. We loved it and I would definitely get it again! I got the forager cocktail and it was light and refreshing, and a little boozy! I liked that they had mocktails too. For dinner, 2 of us for the spanakopita which was huge and so good! Crispy, flaky, seemingly very buttery. The couscous below it was also fresh and tasty, I would definitely recommend this. I took half home! One of my friends got the special which at the time was a pasta dish, it was good but ok. For dessert we split a slice of carrot cake, but we were already pretty full! We ordered the chicken sandwich at 20.00 and also the Reuban at 18.00 which is super expensive for a sandwich in my opinion. The chicken sandwich was too much breading and the french fries were soggy and greasy. The Reuban was greasy and the fries were disgusting like they were leftover and cold. The server was very nice and always checking and this is why I am giving No great shake a two. By the time I left there, I had spent on lunch 49.00 for two horrible sandwiches. I once ordered to-go with my vegan sis and her fam, and we were quite intrigued by the wall fountain inside, and just the overall vibe of the place as we picked up the food. Great Sage has been on my list for a while and I'm so glad I finally got to try it. We went on a Wednesday and I noticed they do 10% for teachers on Wednesdays if you show your ID badge. The ambiance was nice and the servers were very pleasant and accommodating to a friend who has severe nut allergies. We ordered the artichoke dip to start and it was really delicious and flavorful. For dinner I ordered the adult Mac and cheese. It was made with rigatoni and has broccoli and cannelloni beans in it. It was pretty good, but didn't WOW me. I was struck by the golden, lush atmosphere at Great Sage. Every contact I have had with the team there has been kind. The (vegan) Crab Cake Benedict and ginger dijon salad had major tasty synergy. & Stumbling into "Nest" nextdoor was another great idea, I highly recommend. read more
