I have wanted to play the Zombie escape room for years, but never could find a group of people who were willing to do it with me. Yesterday, two members of my go-to escape room squad agreed to try it, and it was awesome! Escape rooms require logical thinking, observational skills, lateral thinking, communication, and teamwork, all under time pressure. This room added the pressure of operating in fear, and it was fascinating! In hindsight, I think there were fewer puzzles, and they weren't particularly tricky, but it was nearly impossible to solve them with a zombie in the room. My daughter is our logic puzzle guru, as she is a former attorney and current LSAT tutor. She commented that she couldn't manage one puzzle, even though it mirrored what she does every day for a living! It was a blast seeing our natural fear reactions come out (I scream and laugh hysterically - the other two get still and quiet). Why was I so scared? I knew it wasn't really a zombie, and it wouldn't really hurt us - but it absolutely affected my ability to function. I loved every adrenaline-filled minute. If you like escape rooms and haunted houses, this is the perfect marriage of the two!

Was absolutely amazing! Very friendly staff and an amazing escape room! Definitely recommend!

I have been to at least 15-20 escape rooms and Great Room Escape is definitely one of my favorites. The zombie in the room catches you off guard and makes you work faster. It was hilarious seeing my friends stressed about the puzzles and then freak out over the zombie. 100% recommend!

Ever wished you could take a crack at solving puzzles like Robert Langdon in the Da Vinci Code? Here's your chance. MindSpark provides non-stop puzzle action that gets enough neurons firing to satisfy even the most extreme of puzzle addicts (read: me). So far I've done the Houdini and Terminal rooms, and also the VR Geist Manor. Oh, I think I'm in love. The Houdini room was pretty PG, but had some really great puzzles. I really enjoyed the set and all of the cool locks & latches. My group scored an extra clue by demonstrating one of Houdini's tricks. Each group may ask for up to three clues. You can communicate this by talking to the screen which also counts down the time. As far as I know, every room gets 3 clues and is 1 hour long. The Terminal was a little bit more exciting as a nefarious plot was underfoot. It starts out on a moving subway car and progresses on from there. The puzzles were more cerebral than in the Houdini room in a good way. Let's just say, God is in the details. Overlook nothing. Geist Manor was a fun excuse to try out VR for the first time. The puzzles themselves were easy. Figuring out how to complete them in VR added complexity and the animations in 3d were awesome. That said, I would be interested in doing a more difficult VR game. It was on the scary side and one friend of mine was too freaked out to get past the game intro, so consider this if you are thinking of taking your kiddos. Overall, such an exhilarating time. I can't wait to return for round three in the Zombie room!

Our Geeks and Gamers meetup teams all escaped... barely!

I run a Meetup group for Geeks and Gamers, and we have visited several Austin-area escape rooms. Last Friday, we brought two dozen of our members to MindSpark and tried out all three rooms. Personally, I played the Zombie room, and was most impressed by the attention to detail in the set design, the cleverness of the puzzles, and the interaction with the actors. Our zombie was a convincingly frightening threat throughout the entire hour. After our adventures, the rest of our members reported being similarly impressed with the other rooms, especially the team that finished Houdini with only 7 seconds left. As experienced Escape Room adventurers, we highly recommend MindSpark as a first-class experience. We will be back for more!

Is this good for a 11 and 12 year old?

Right now they have a Christmas room that is great for kids! My 9 and 11 year old boys are pretty smart and enjoy puzzles, they love escape rooms. If you think it's something they would like, they probably will.

Toby was a very friendly and genuine game guide that made us feel great about our accomplishments and CJ was an awesome and generous host that got us hyped and left us feeling elated. I was visiting from The Bay Area, California for my birthday, and we decided to play The Heist. There were 5 of us, and 4 had played escape rooms before (not at this company). The room design was awesome, very intricate and detailed, and the puzzles were really well done and very fun (Zelda Ocarina of Time vibes in one puzzle). It had plenty of things for us to do and find solo, and then still come together to solve the puzzles as a group. We smoked it, escaping with over 20 minutes left, with no clues, so we were ecstatic! We got out of the room and much to my surprise they made me a hand-drawn birthday card!! So incredibly sweet, and totally made my day. Coming off of our high of escaping The Heist, we decided to try their hardest room, Prison Break (with a discount for playing same day!). We were split into two cells at first, which proved difficult because we weren't communicating as well as we should have been. We needed a little bit of guidance in the beginning, but once we were out of the cells we started working better as a whole team. The final room was my favorite, I completed a really cool chess puzzle and then there was a detailed bookcase one too that I managed to figure out! I personally felt very accomplished in this room and we managed to escape with around 7 minutes left! Overall, these rooms are meticulously designed and sets were immersive. The puzzles were clever and made you feel very smart when you figured them out, which made the rooms that much more fun. They really focus on teamwork, which amplifies the connection and good vibes of your friends and family. Guidance was kind and not overbearing, allowing you to struggle on your own before gently nudging you towards what was blatantly obvious in hindsight. You can tell that the staff there have a unique bond and really enjoy making the guests feel special. They made my birthday a super memorable one and I'm so happy I decided to come here. Please check them out, you'll be glad you did. My birthday was the bestest because of you all! Thank you so much Toby and CJ!!

The detail, immersion, puzzles, and storytelling are on another level. The Crypt was our favorite -- the atmosphere was amazing and the puzzles were so well designed. We also loved the storyline of The Cabin, but fair warning: it is very scary! What really stood out was how accommodating they were. Since we had previously done Cabin Chapter 2 with actors, we asked to tone it down this time and remove the actors -- and they were awesome about customizing the experience so it was still immersive but comfortable for us. That flexibility made such a difference. Huge shoutout to our game masters Kai, Paige, and Alexis -- they made every experience so much fun and kept the energy high. And Lia was fantastic with bookings and explaining the Cabin storyline. You can tell this team truly cares about creating an unforgettable experience. If you're in Austin and love escape rooms, this is a MUST. We can't recommend Escape Hour enough! Jamie and Nick

I was worried that this escape room would be too scary for me, which it DEFINITELY was, but at least I was proud of myself for participating in it. I learned a lot about myself, including how I would react in situations when I'm just scared to death. It's not great, but hey, at least I know. Our game host, Miranda, was amazing. Everyone who we've interacted stayed in character and it just made the experience that much more fun and engaging. I highly recommend for you to experience it yourself. You can also ask them to "tone down" the scary rooms if you are worried. The Cabin Rooms are a combo of escape room puzzles with a twist of haunted house theme. I went in as a group of 4 and I that was a good size since some rooms could be small. Fun but may not be for everyone. I am interested in trying out their other escape rooms, too.

We had…read moreall these ideas on how to celebrate and spend time together, but the weather in the forecast really killed any ability to plan an outside adventure. Luckily, I had an ace up my sleeve and called an audible by suggesting the new Stranger Things: Catalyst experience at Sandbox VR. My girlfriend is a huge Stranger Things fan. It's one of the first shows she was following from the first season until the finale that she got to be a part of the zeitgeist with. The moment I suggested this, any other plan went out the window because to her, this was a must. This was not my first experience with a VR attraction. I got to try The Void when it was still in business at Disney Springs doing a Star Wars experience, and I remember having such a blast with it. This was my girlfriend's first time in a virtual reality space like this. Sandbox VR is the modern, surviving version of this doing a similar concept of suiting you up in a crazy VR suit with a headset, headphones, and a bunch of other bells and whistles before you enter a new world. The one thing that is different is that The Void had you walking through their space in their experience while here you're set in a box for the most part. Sandbox VR keeps you in one space for the entire duration and plays it out like a rail shooter arcade game. Different concepts, but both highly enjoyable. The staff were helpful in making sure we were all suited up and ready to go and we had our pictures taken right before they put us into the room. Once we had our headsets on, the experience started immediately. What's so fascinating about an experience like this is how immediate your brain just tells you that this is reality. You just believe what you're seeing is real. The avatar of my girlfriend is moving in real time, the catalyst is a tangible object I am holding. I am a Stranger Thing or whatever they call it. From the get-go, you are given a brief tutorial as a training and then suddenly the game goes from 0 to 100 and ramps up expeditiously. My girlfriend was hootin' and hollerin' the whole time as demogorgons (and democreatures as she calls them) were flying up on us and attacking us. You're genuinely in panic as these things get close to you. The anxiety feels real. The audio, the visuals, and everything in between just gets you immersed in it. The experience lasted about 30 minutes and by the end I was sweating profusely. I'm in pretty decent shape, but I was an absolute mess by the end. After all the equipment was taken off, we got sat next to a TV to show us our scores to see who leaves with bragging rights and is crowned the MVP (it was me by the way). On top of that, you are shown three videos of the VR experience that are recorded during your play. It scenes from the virtual world with a real camera that's pointed at you acting like a fool. Here, we got a dance scene from the end of the experience, a vertical video, and a horizontal trailer. Each were extremely humorous and given to us free of charge with our purchases. I know it works as free advertising for Sandbox VR to give you those videos to post online and all that jazz, but places like this still seem to charge for the memories. To get them included for free as a little keepsake is an incredible gesture and makes me want to try another experience. As for the videos themselves, they are still frying me, and I've watched them numerous times since the experience. If you are a Stranger Things fan, the Catalyst is a must-try. For someone who's only seen 3 episodes but has a good understanding of the show through osmosis from my girlfriend, I had a blast. Even if you're not a Stranger Things fan, there are 10 other experiences to try. The price with everything considered was pretty fair, and we truly had so much fun that I think it was worth it with what value we got out of it. The 20 second video we got of my girlfriend screaming the entire time might get played at our wedding one day. Who knows! RIYL: An experience out of this world
