I stopped by here a couple of Sundays ago with my wife. We were in the Quad Cities area and wanted to try a local brewery on the IA side and so I consulted Yelp. Great River Brewery came up and so we headed on over to it. Whenever we first walked into the tasting room we were on what we would later find out was the sports bar. Since the menu wasn't on that side, one of the bartenders encouraged us to walk through a door on the side around to the other side and so we did. We happened to be the only people there at that point which was sort of weird. On this side of the bar they had a ton of merchandise for sale and I could see a large board with what they had on tap. The back side of the room was filled with coolers of beer which you could get to go. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I went with a flight. Flights at Great River Brewery consist of your choice of 6 beers and so I went with the roller dam red (my little chalkboard was missing this one), the spooner, 483 pale ale, vintage blonde, an experimental peanut butter brown and finally the milk stout. The beers here were all decent and the two that excited me the most were the roller dam red and the Peanut Butter Brown. It was amazing to me that they got as much of the taste of peanut butter into a beer and that it worked well. By the time I was finishing up my flight, a number of other people had started arriving at the taproom including a number of cyclists. The bottom line for me is that I would head here again in the future. While it was a bit weird being the only people there for a while, I would really love a chance at trying that Peanut Butter Brown again. read more

Situated in downtown Davenport and walk-able to other nearby points of interest in the area is where you'll find Great River Brewery. Overall I'd say it's a pretty casual spot. No food, just beer and setup just for tasting with seating surrounding the main bar front and even some patio seats available for when the weather is favorable. While being a fan of IPAs, they didn't have many to choose from but did have quite the selection of stouts and porters when we came. These definitely were on the higher gravity but were good for the winter and definitely got us warmed up during the subzero temperatures when we had visited. My favorite would have to be their limited hazelnut brown they had on tap. Browns at one point were my favorites to drink and theirs was excellent. Lots of smoky flavors and hazelnut throughout. But all in all it's hard to say any of the beer we tried was bad especially when you're at a local microbrewery. Anyways, not a bad spot to check out and relax and enjoy a beer if you find yourself in downtown Davenport. 'Til next time, cheers! read more

The Quad City region is blessed with great, independent breweries, creating multiple nectar's of life, BIER! Within a five mile radius, four independent micro breweries bless the area. Each has its own, distinctive flavor and character. The four independent breweries (NOT chain) in order of my preference are the Great Lake, Front City Brewery, Bent River, and Blue Cat. The cost of the bier was affordable, from $3.75 to $4.00 a pint! I do not know if the citizens of the Quad City realize the how fortunate they are to have so many great independent breweries. This place is great - four stars! A bier lovers place - it is a brewery with a small attachment (room) where they serve great nectar of life, BIER! NO food, no other liquors other than bier. Besides bier, the only other items for sale are touristy items (t-shirts of the various brew and pint glass with the Great River Brewery symbol). I live for IPAs (Indian Pale Ale) - the 483 brew (the history behind the numbering is that it is a buoy on the mighty Mississippi River). Very hoppy, flavorful, to date, one of the best brew I have tasted to date - it leaves a hoppy, bitter, aftertaste (which I crave). Bar or bier tender is very knowledgeable and friendly - should be, as he works brewing the bier. Local folks are friendly too. Located right as you cross one of the bridges from Illinois (Rock Island) into Davenport (Iowa), it is located in a mixed industrial area - working class folks. Young locals from the college and the area are in the small "man room" pub. NO television, no juke box, a few tables - very Spartan like, exists for the purpose of dispensing bier. A few tables are also outside so that you can enjoy the brews outside when the weather is nice. A sign of the quality of the bier is that two of the brews are dispensed at one of the more upscale restaurant downtown, Woodfire Grill (see separate review). Great River Brewery is definitely one of my top breweries in the nation - will definitely return. read more

How many breweries can you bike to, bring your bike into the outdoor seating area of, and hop off for a quick glass of beer? Great River checks these boxes, and I liked it. On a sunny mid-80's October afternoon, I found myself half way through my bike ride at the steps GRB. Spotted another bike in the outdoor seating area and decided this was the place for me. I had a considerable ride ahead of me so one glass was all I could go for. The Vintage Blonde sounded good so I went with that. Good call. The Vintage had a great kolsch taste. High marks for Great River Brewery. On a day of the week when the City of Davenport offers few options - most everything is closed on Sundays - this Brewery was a great option. It is easy to find, especially coming from Rt 80, as it greets you upon entering the city. It is conveniently located to most hotels and a two minute jaunt for bi-cyclist and runners coming from the popular river bank trail. This is a seasoned brewery with a diverse selection of well crafted brews - has more than enough flavors to satisfy any micro-brewery enthusiast or traditional brand loyalist. I had the 483 Pale Ale which had a nice spice flavor that really set it apart from other favorite Pale Ales, while my friend enjoyed the Vintage Blond. Besides that, the place just had a cool practicality to it. The decor has industrial elements of metal seats and ceiling pipes with walls laced with street sticker art and merchandise, while the two wheeler in the window gives a nod to the bicycle community. Great service from the friendly bartender, who served us friendly banter and fascinating Davenport history. According to him, the most ideal time to visit again is during the famous Ragbrai bike race, when it finishes in Davenport, and the 7 Miles Bix run - Big River Brewery are major supporters of both events. read more

Recently visited this brewery for the first time on a busy Friday night. We were greeted by friendly patrons and bar tenders. People even gave up their bar stools so we could make our way to the bar! We ordered 2 of their HopAPotamus (in love!) and 2 of their Big Cocks later on both delicious! We recently moved to the quad cities from Raleigh, NC and this was the perfect place for us. Since we had never been, my husband and I hopped in the car and drive to Iowa this weekend. We made sure to include a brewery tour in the itinerary- which ended up being Great River Brewery. The tour guide was knowledgable and fun. Our group only had about 7 people so we got to ask lots of questions about their processes and equipment. The tour wrapped up in their canning and stock area- which was interesting. To close out the experience- you taste every single beer they make. I think I counted 13 tastings but after about 7 my accuracy went down. They even give you en entire free pint after all of this! These guys make some seriously good beer. I think it is the tops of the four microbreweries in the quad cities. My favorite is the 483 Pale Ale. Hoppier than the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (which is the standard by which others should be judged, IMO). As others have said, interior space and seating is sparse (but dog friendly!) and there are tables outside, so it is more of a warm weather hangout. They have specials on problematic/unlabeled tallboy cans in a sink by the door. read more

Great River has been on my list of breweries to check out. We were in the area and decided to stop in. They have tours every Saturday (for free), so you can check that out if you desire. From what I read, they are very good and you get samples. They have a tap room inside, and picnic tables to sit at outside. No food here, but there are plenty of places within walking distance near by. We shared a flight, which was 6 different beers for $7.50. 4 of the beers are their standard beers, and the last two you can choose. Of all of them, I really liked the Strawberry Ale, Blonde Ale, and Farmer's Daughter. However, they were all really good! They have quite the variety as well. They have two chalk boards inside that are full of all of the beers they have. They also have root beer for the kids. If you get a growler, make sure to bring it back and get it refilled - you get half off the refill. read more

Great River is my favorite brewery in the Quad Cities. Along with their unique variety of beers, the outdoor patio is always a hit in the spring, summer, and fall months. They offer FREE tours...yes, FREE...on the weekends which also consists of some samples and a free pint at the end. They also support local by creating brews that support non-profits, feature QC landmarks, and reflect the uniqueness of the region. My personal go-to is the [relatively strong, but extremely delicious] Tripel Crank. They just released canned versions of it to add to their growing portfolio of canned options, which is fantastic news. For the newbies, I highly recommend getting a sampler (either at the location or from the local grocer/wine and spirits). You might be surprised with which one ends up being your favorite...if you're even able to narrow it down to one! read more

Don't stick with the couple of kinds of beers that are carried in grocery stores - make sure to go down to the tap house to taste their full offerings. I LOVE their new Abbey ale - 7 Reverends - and their stouts are very good as well. Their cask beer was some of the best beer that I've ever tasted, and I do like beer. Make sure to stop by on Sundays for half-price growlers - a great way to fill up on good beer on a budget. All beers are half-off every time the bridge is open too! $1 dented cans on Saturday can be skipped, but you may want to drop by just to check it out. Most of the cans didn't fill completely and didn't always seal, so you're likely to get some pretty darn flat beer. read more

I love craft beer. "How much do you love it?" You may ask... Well, let me tell you! Our family was in town for a wedding. After spending a couple hours at a brewery down the street to eat and drink, I took a turn to this place instead of going back to the hotel. My family said I was crazy, going off on my own down the mean streets of Davenport. Perhaps they are right. But nevertheless, I went low (How low? Solo!) to Great River on a Friday night in early December. It was pretty packed, but I managed to grab a stool near the bar. The waitress asked what I wanted to have. I waved my finger at the list on the wall and said "One of everything!" She nodded diligently and went to pouring. (Hiccup.) I enjoyed the craft brews very much. I found that I gravitated toward the porters and stouts the most, but enjoyed the experience of trying them all. (Hiccup.) If I am ever in Davenport again, I will come again..and this time, it will not be alone! read more

Great pit stop when biking the river front in Davenport. This local brewery serves up great beer and offers a fun and happening outdoor patio. Picnic tables encourage conversation with other beer and bike enthusiasts and wide brimmed umbrellas keep the space shaded and cool. Inside there is a bar and a backroom that offers ample seating and views of brewing and bottling processes. Why four stars and not five? Two reasons: (1) we wanted a snack and they have no food. We could have ordered food to be delivered from a nearby restaurant, but we didn't want to make the effort. We would have been satisfied just with a bag of pretzels. (2) People were smoking cigarettes and cigars out on the patio. When I am drinking good beer, the last thing I want competing with my senses is the smell of cigars and smoke. read more

GRB sticks to what they do best...beer! You will not find food here, but that is no reason to pass it up. There are plenty of restaurants in walking distance. Their keg tappings are always a blast and bring out quite a crowd. Ahhh Bock is my favorite tapping with spring just around the corner. Right next to the bike path and river, as well as in downtown Davenport so there are lots of things to do before/after visiting GRB! They are philanthropic and support their local community. Great beer, but thats all. Don't come here for Miller Lite, Bud Lite, or Jack & Coke's. All they have is beer, and thats all I need. Actually it wouldn't be bad if pretzels, popcorn, or peanuts were more visible about the place. I only see these things occasionally, but never any food. This is strictly sort of a beer lounge. There is a bar, one booth, one small table, and no more. You can clearly see the actual brewery from inside and outside the bar. During the warm months there is seating outside which is nice. You have a view of the Arsenal government bridge, and some of the Lock and Dam No.15. of the Mississippi River. The bartenders are always patient, helpful, and informative. Nice folks. Patrons seem often to be equally friendly. Very cozy place. The IPA is my favorite, but seasonal and not available right now. The Roller Dam Red is great, as is the Pale Ale, Farmer Brown, and La Jefa. There are tappings year-round of new seasonal beers. Growlers can be refilled, and there are also growlers on site to purchase. Sundays have $6.50 growler refills as of this writing. If you like beer, check it out. read more

Easily has outdone all the other breweries in town for atmosphere and beer quality. It doesn't have the loud music and bizzare crowd that Bent River has, it doesn't have the dinner crowds that Blue Cat and Front Street have (don't get me wrong, I love them too). All it has is a nice outdoor patio, a few booths inside and sweet, sweet beer. A must try is the specials they make that are aged 7 months in a bottle of Templeton Rye Whisky. We couldn't stay long because they only their brewed beers so they couldn't accommodate someone in our party that can't drink beer.
