Being from northern England, frequenting Wigan to go to college when I was younger, and naturally loving both savoury and sweet pies, it was only a matter of time before I was to check the Great North Pie Co off my visit list. and boy it did not disappoint.
Granted it took me a moment to find where to go into the actual restaurant, but when I found it I was met with dimmed lights, an amazing exposed brick and chill ambiance within a general small restaurant. It can easily get full and I think I was lucky at the time I went as there was a table free when I got there. Sat down on comfy seating and a nice atmosphere, I browsed the menu. it was a short menu, but exceptional.
they have around 4 different types of pies, 2 meat, and 2 vegetarian (not sure about vegan options however), some sides, and drinks. I opted for the chicken and mushroom pie, and was talked into adding gravy to it, and had a side of cauliflower cheese (cauliflower is vegetables ... don't judge) and a drink of a fizzy vimto ... being northern and it being the city where it was invented .. how could I not?
I had a feeling the pies were made to order as it seemed to take a moment for the food to arrive and nobody else was really ordering .... this is great in that it is fresh and it wasn't too long a wait ... and when it arrived it was really hot .... perfect.
all of the food was delicious ... the case was crispy and nice, full to the brim with a delicious filling, the gravy a lovely meaty flavour, the cauliflower cheese was amazingly creamy, hot, and just the best I've had, and you can't go wrong with fizzy vimto.
Its very clear to see why the company won an award at the Manchester food and drink awards recently (Indeopendant food producer of the year).
I highly recommend a visit and I need to return to try the other pies. read more
