Just as me and my other Whitworth-Park dwelling friends would stop off at Adbuls or Gemini after a night out, he would never fail to stop at Saajan. Fast-forward 5 years. Single male student is still a student, but now, like many mature students has emigrated south to Didsbury. He still has a penchant for fast food, but not many residents of Didsbury share his fondness, therefore he was most upset when he found out that there are no late night kebab houses in Didsbury. So the resolution to this problem is that after a night out in town, he simply gets off the bus in Fallowfield, purchases his Saajan kebab and gets back onto the bus to Didsbury feeling content. It's very rare for such an establishment to survive for so long without even the slightest hint of a rumour about cockroaches, rats or gross staff (a la Abduls and Gemini) to tarnish its reputation, so Saajan must be good. My friend is also generally very lazy, meaning that Saajan must be damn good.

The fact you could stuff yourself with deliciously saucy and spicy meat and salad on a bit flat bread for £3 was just brilliant. And I genuinely always liked the taste of all three meats: chicken, lamb and shish. I managed to have a perfectly time opportunity and excuse to go last week after probably about 4 years. I went for lamb. Problem is, and I knew this before, a kebab doesn't travel too well. Before I was only living 5 minutes away but now it had to cope with a 20 mins drive so the bread was saggy and the meat a bit cold. Nothing to do with the Sajaan guys however. My main criticism would be about the quality of the meat. I think it went downhill as my lamb was chewy and full of nerves. I still like the flavours but despite the fact the price has gone up (£3.80 now which is not that exorbitant for a full meal) the meat is not as good as it used to be. Would happily go back for the chicken or shish, hopefully in the near future though.

Basically this place does amazing Middle Eastern/Lebanese cuisine and on this occasion with it being Friday lunch time, I popped in just as they were doing their all you can eat buffet. For £11.95 I tucked into some amazing kofta, breads, dips, salad, wings - wow, so much great food just check out my snaps - plus there was lovely cake and pudding included to follow. The food was wonderful and tasty - really nice! To round off I bought an Arabic cardamom tea which was fantastic - really nice and complimented the meal well. It was nice to go somewhere not on my normal radar, I'll be back!

In the heart of where else but Manchester's curry mile will you find..... wait for it... BEIRUT!?…read moreYes that is indeed right. Nope its not a randomly named curry house, Beirut serves food deliciouso Lebanese-o! For those not in the know, Manchester's curry mile has seen a mini Middle eastern revolution of its own. The Mile of curry is now equipped with a plethora of Shisha bars as well as restaurants such as Beirut. In honestly of alls, my first impression of the place was not great. The capital could be described as chaotic from the kids running around whilst parents going to town on their meat feasts to the directionless type waiting staff, more laid back than the kobedas on show. First impressions however don't last and I'm here to announce that the food thankfully did make a lasting impression. I'd personally recommend the mixed grill, even if I struggled to get through half of it. Don't be put off by the cover, its the contents of the book that count. If Beirut was a book, I would highly recommend it, it was a great read.

Common for a take-away like this, it does a range from garlic bread and pizzas, through curries, bhajis and samosas, to kebabs and chips. Unusual for a take-away like this, all of them are half decent so it's not just a kebab place that does other stuff. Having said that, the Seek Kebab, at £3, is probably the highlight of the menu. The staff are friendly, and always seem to keep the place open whatever the hour, or night of the week (despite Withington's tendency to resemble a ghost town during the student vacations). They also sell the chill, garlic and mango sauces in little pots if you, like me, are always wishing you had some at home. A very petty criticism, but nonetheless one close to me heart, is that the chilli sauce is a little too sweet. However, if you do go for the Seek Kebab (as you should) you'll find its very well spiced indeed and probably doesn't need much additional chilli, leaving more room for the garlic. Pizzas are good too, and are always buy 1 get one free, making it ridiculously cheap if you're with a friend or very hungry. You can make it even cheaper, if, instead of ordering the pizza with the toppings you want, you order a Margarita and add all the toppings separately for much less! (Let's hope they don't read this and notice the loophole).

Still waiting for order, waited here before when the takeaway was completely empty for around 20 mins for a lacklustre milkshake so should've learnt my lesson haha. This place NEEDS to be shut down actually the worst I've been to and the staff are completely rude so not even worth keeping them in the job.

However, this place is brilliant. For less than £10 a head we were treated to great service, complimentary olives, fresh pita bread and small desert each; a large starter of lamb in homous (big enough to share given the unlimited supply of pita bread) and a great main dish each. This time a mea culpa is necessary, because Petra is simply extraordinary. We ended up here almost by chance, because the place next door where we intended to go was complete and we didn't feel like waiting more than five minutes. The place, a Middle Eastern restaurant, immediately struck us as welcoming and characteristic, and the staff turned out to be incredibly kind and professional. Food is undoubtedly 5*****. We shared a starter, that might as well been a main given its size: hummus with parsley and saffron topped with slices of roast lamb, the whole thing served with pita bread. It's the best hummus I have ever had, its taste was so delicate! We also got a cucumber salad, offered by the house, that was identical to the one my grandma made when I was a child, so flavoursome! As for the mains, the majority of them are made of lamb meat seasoned with some vegetables, the whole thing served with rice. My friend took one of them and was very satisfied. I went for a vegetarian dish, spinach cocked in garlic and other spices enriched with crispy onions. Absolutely delicious. Finally, we've been offered a dessert, some sort of condensed milk topped with pistachios. There's no risk of feeling hungry after a meal, portions are huge! And the prices are unexpectedly low given the excellent quality and taste of food.
