Honestly such a classic great meal that really does "clean Chinese food" so well. All dishes are on the pricier side for Chinese food but you pay for the quality and the service. There are lots of bigger tables for big parties that you can make reservations for but there's usually not too bad of a wait for smaller parties on the weekends. We tried the half-tea smoked duck since we didn't want to get the peking duck for just 2 people and it was nowhere near as good or moist, much chewier and with a smokier flavor - I don't recommend if you're used to the traditional Peking duck. Otherwise all our other dishes were fantastic and you can never really go wrong with Great China for a nice easy meal.

This place is wonderful if you want a fancy sit down restaurant for the family or friends. I absolutely enjoyed my meal here. We got the tofu, the orange chicken, chow mein, kung pao chicken, broccoli beef, garlic fried rice, and Peking duck. My top call outs would be the orange chicken and the Peking duck. They were absolutely delicious and everyone loved it. I wasn't a big fan of the garlic fried rice. I felt it was kind of bland and needed more flavor.

Came here on a Saturday afternoon and so happy a friend introduced us to this place. The Peking Duck was delicious and everything I had hoped for. We also ordered the double skin mung bean noodle salad. I had never had this before but am glad we tried it. A good mix of seafood, veggie and meat toppings and the sauce mixed with mustard was really flavorful as well. The sautéed garlic string beans were a hit. We also tried the fish filet in rice wine sauce, which was something new for me but also very tasty. The service was good and attentive. The servers were constantly checking in and refilling our waters. Definitely looking forward to coming back here and trying other dishes.

The 4 us arrived early without reservation and scored a table up on a table with stop seating. The restaurant is very modern and esthetic are nice. One of our friends have dined there many times and suggested the whole roasted duck, their size medium special rice noodle and we ordered beef and green beans with 2 orders of rice. Food was good and portions as generous. The duck was our favorite dish, a tad on the blander side but very crispy skin. The noodle dish was very different from anything we've tried. At first the rice noodles looked like gelatinous globs. It came with slivers of meat and vegetables. When mixed with some of the yellow mustard, it was quite good but we didn't use that much of the mustard. The beef and green bean dish was OK, nothing special. Staff was helpful and checked on us a couple of times.

Saw this on Bib Gourmand and decided to check it out. Was craving Pecking Duck and this hit the spot. Crispy skin and juicy duck. Also the pot stickers are delicious with a crispy outside and juicy meat. Would go again. Fast service.

I think it's a very solid Chinese restaurant. Main thing is it's often very busy, so much that there's already a line when it opens for lunch on a weekend. But for me, there was enough space to get a table after all the initial campers. The staff were nice enough to seat me before all of my party arrived. The staff default to mandarin which is always a good sign. Service is pretty good, answering questions and acknowledging when we flashed them down. The Peking duck is pretty good and doesn't require reservation. I enjoyed all the dishes.

Finally had the chance to try their Peking duck- and it lives up to the hype! Usually duck is so fatty, and there's so much bone to sift though- but this is beautifully presented. Duck meat so tender and firm. No bones at all! Also ordered the mung bean noodle appetizer- wasabi forward, found this refreshing! Also ordered the thrice cooked pork and it was so flavorful and tender. Also had the ants on a log noodle seafood dish. The noodle/ seafood dish was the only dish I thought was just ok - will come back to try other things on the menu! Overall, this restaurant exceeded my expectations- and now understand why they have so much hype! The cook has been here for over 40 years- so they're doing something right. Loved our server- he's so Bay Area! He had a gigantic lighter in his pocket of bad boys that he showed us and we loved his personality. Definitely a place where you have nice dinners, celebrations, and a great place to take folks if they're from out of town

Ate here for banquet style celebration and it was great! Everything! Every dish and also the service. Still pricier than your standard Chinese restaurant but worth a splurge now and again.

Visited Great China on a Saturday evening around 7:30 pm. As expected, the place was packed, and we were quoted a 30-45 minute wait. Surprisingly, we were seated in about 15 minutes, which was appreciated. Menus were brought promptly, and service throughout the meal was quick and friendly. We ordered the spring rolls, black bean tofu, and ginger scallion fish fillet. The spring rolls were crispy and generously filled, but the filling noticeably lacked salt, which made them fall flat. The chili oil served alongside tasted old and was essentially plain oil with just a hint of chili, offering little depth or heat. The black bean tofu was bland and underwhelming, lacking the bold, savory flavor typically expected from the dish. The ginger scallion fish fillet was decent--the sauce itself had good flavor--but the portion of sauce was too small, so overall the dish felt muted and incomplete. While the staff was friendly and efficient and the restaurant clearly has strong demand, the food itself was just okay and didn't live up to the hype or the wait. Overall, solid service, but the flavors were disappointing given Great China's reputation.

We don't typically go across the bay to eat but Great China is one of those places we make the exception for. I was able to get reservations for seven of us on a Sunday night. Although the restaurant is in a big space, this place gets super busy and packed. Making reservations is the best way to go. My kids only wanted the Peking duck and insisted we order two whole ducks for seven of us. I thought this was a bit overambitious but know better to never to underestimate my kids. In addition to the duck, we also ordered a pot sticker, salt and pepper calamari, Mongolian beef, ant climbed the tree (glass noodles with shrimp, peppers, mushrooms, water chestnuts), Chinese string beans and fermented bean curd Ong choy. Everything was delicious and we ate all of the duck and most of the rest of the dishes! Our only regret is we forgot to ask for the duck carcasses to take home for jook or soup. Yes, Great China will give you the carcasses if requested post-dinner. Parking can be challenging nearby as the location is close the the Cal campus, but there is a small, paid parking lot across the street.

We came on a Sunday around 7 PM and were quoted a 15-20 minute wait, but we were seated in about 10 minutes, which was a nice. We wanted to sample a variety of dishes, so we ordered quite a bit: chicken chow mein, chicken fried rice, Mandarin wings, Kung Pao chicken, beef & broccoli, hot & sour soup, salt and pepper prawns, and pork dumplings. The portions are definitely generous. Food: Pork Dumplings: Flavorful and tasty, though I wish they came with more dipping sauce. Hot & Sour Soup: One of the standouts of the night--super flavorful, comforting, and perfect for chilly weather. Chicken Chow Mein: A bit overcooked on the noodles but still flavorful. Fried Rice: Nice and salty (in a good way!) and paired well with the proteins when we finally got the rice (it came last). Kung Pao Chicken & Beef & Broccoli: Both were flavorful and solid overall. Mandarin Wings: Good addition to the mix. Salt and pepper prawns: another standout dish. Service: This is where the experience was mixed. Our dishes came out very spaced apart--sometimes 20+ minutes between plates. It made it hard to enjoy the mains together with the rice or chow mein because things would either get cold or we'd finish one dish long before the next arrived. Our server also wasn't very attentive, and she repeatedly discouraged us from ordering as much as we did. I explained we wanted variety and leftovers, but she pushed back a couple of times. Maybe she was just trying to let us know the portions are large (which they are), but it came off a bit odd. On the flip side, one of the staff members bringing out dishes--possibly a busser--was actually more attentive and helpful than our main server. Overall: 3.5/5 The food is delicious, portions are generous, and the wait time was better than expected but this place is pricey compared to other Chinese restaurants. The pacing of dishes and uneven service kept it from being perfect, but I'd still come back--especially for that hot & sour soup.

Not bad for a modern Chinese restaurant serving authentic Northern Chinese cuisine. You know it's legit and delicious when tons of Chinese families dine in there. We ordered four family-sized dishes that were popular on the menu: Walnut Prawns- more like honey walnut shrimp, but in an orange version. Citrusy and tangy sauce that wasn't too watery. Guo Ta Fillet Fish- steamed to softness and generous on the green onions and cilantro Black Bean Noodle- the original version of Jiajiangmen, but with shrimp added. The noodles were chewy and thick, smothered in onions and black bean sauce, which was of a thick consistency. Salt and Pepper Spareribs- flavorful with garnishes, a bit spicy, and the meat easily fell off the bone. Overall, the service was nice despite a 45-minute wait for a table during dinner on a weekend. They even have a nice bar with a full display of alcohol. Conveniently located near the UC Berkeley campus, but parking is available a block away.

I celebrated my birthday at Great China with a party of 7 people, and it was a great experience! I walk by this restaurant all the time, and it is always full of people and smells so good. I'm so glad I got to try it! As soon as we walked in, I saw it was a large open space with lots of seating. We ordered 7 family-style dishes to share, and they were all great! The duck was delicious with crispy skin. The honey walnut shrimp had a particularly great sauce. The green beans were also a hit. Honestly, everything was good! The service here is also amazing. The staff was very attentive and even consolidated our food onto smaller plates halfway through the meal to make more room at the table. Overall, this was a great meal, and I look forward to returning and trying more dishes!

    Closed every thanksgiving

Can u bring a cake or cupcakes in for a b'bay celebration?

Yes, but they charge $1 per person dessert fee. Standard for bringing in outside food into a restaurant.

How long is the waiting time for Peking duck?

Once you place the order, it comes out based on what you ordered. Didn't need a special order anything. Came out maybe 30 minutes after we ordered and food came out.

Usually Chinese do not use fish sauce, just Thai and Vietnamese. Ask, when you order.

I got a voicemail confirming my reservation, and it said that there needs to be a minimum $35 per person charge. Is this being enforced? We plan to eat a full dinner there but this seems a bit unreasonable.

Yes and no, from experience with taxes and tips trust me your bill will come up to at least $35 per if not more - duck alone is $50 and all other dishes in $20 ranges

Cool to see a restaurant stick around for that long. We got to the restaurant right when it opened for lunch at 11:30 on Sunday. Free street parking on Sunday! I thought everything was solid top to bottom, but here is my ranking in descending order: Braised Eggplant Tofu Clay Pot - I generally like this dish everywhere and they have a good version on this here - seasoned well, tender eggplant, and nice texture on the tofu Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings - non-traditional "salt & pepper" - thick coating of tempura-like batter, very peppery (black pepper), and wings set on a bed of sauteed onions. Sesame Bread with Green Onion - tasty, but unlike other "da bing" I've had. This was on the thin side, meaning you have a lot more crispy outside compared fluffy inside. This was also lighter on the green onion. Classic Shrimp & Chive Dumpling - can't go wrong with dumplings - an order comes with 12 dumplings, each filled with big pieces of shrimp. I liked the texture but it is a little different - looser filling instead of a solid meat/veg ball on the inside. Original Braised Pork Noodle Soup - I liked the flavor of the soup and noodles. There was a ton of meat (diced) but they were on the tough side.

While the chang fen is good, I would say that the prices are a bit high for the portion. Same with the dim sum - higher prices for dim sum than other places I've been to and overall dim sum was subpar. However, going here does certainly scratch the craving for chang fen whenever I am feeling it.

For 15 small eaters - 2 orders of beef with cumin, 2 orders of sesame chicken, 2 orders of seafood tofu in clay pot, 3 orders of charred cabbage, 2 orders of mixed vegetables, 2 orders of veggie egg rolls, 2 orders of veggie chow mein, and one tray of shrimp fired rice. We made our own white rice, which nobody ate. I also requested less garlic and no msg. Thank you for some yummy food!!!

Heading here during Lunar New Year maybe not the best idea, but also so refreshing to see China…read moreVillage full of such a great crowd. This is hands down one of my favorite spots to grab Chinese food on Solano Ave. and in the area. They also now have some special dim sum items if it's been a minute since the last time you've dined here! Did I mention also a full bar? That was a pleasant surprise! China Village was the first meal I had delivered after I came home post-birth, so it will forever have a special place in my heart :) Favorite items? Pork bao buns, Sesame Chicken Breast (always), Homemade Chowmein with any protein, and there's a dish that I've been thinking about since we've ordered it..Shredded Pork Sautéed with Dry Bean Curd. Delicious! The fried rice, the soup(s), the potstickers..there's not one item here I haven't enjoyed. This is a big restaurant and service is fast, or at least what we've experienced. Would love to actually try the Chicken Breast with Honey Glazed Walnuts, the Cauliflower with Shredded Pork, and more from the dim sum menu. Fair pricing. Metered parking on Solano, but may take a few additional minutes to secure.
