This review is based on a phone purchase I made. I haven't had the pleasure of visiting this store in person, but when searching for a rare record online I discovered that Graywhale had a used copy of the record in question. I tried to place the order over their website, but for some reason it wouldn't process the payment, and I tried using different credit cards, but always with the same result. I emailed them about the issue and I received a reply soon after from Zane, who told me that they could help me make the purchase over the phone. So I called the store and spoke to Anthony, who assisted me and rang me up over the phone, and he said that he should be able to have the record shipped out that day. True to his word, Anthony sent me a message with the tracking number for my order. When order arrived, the record was packaged very carefully and the record in excellent condition. Hopefully, if I ever make my way out to Utah (I live in New York), I will certainly make it a point to swing by Graywhale! read more

They dont give you a lot for your dvds but the main reason I wont go there again is they are against ICE people that belive in open borders have ruined our country wont be shopping their again read more

Graywhale is such an awesome spot to find movies, music, and video games. I love the Salt Lake store but I still come up to Ogden to visit this location too. I always find some hidden gems and walk out with something every time. Staff are super friendly and willing to help if you are looking for something specific. Definitely check it out!! read more

This has been a backburner project of mine for a while, to go through all of the various Greywhales, as I've frequented them for years and years and been a Killer Whale card dude for longer than I care to remember...the local chain meant a great deal to me shortly after I moved to Utah as it was a good means to the music that I found myself nearly incapable of going on without...times have changed, though and there are other mechanisms. I've always loved local music shops and frequented them as much as possible for nearly 4 decades, but frequently leave without buying anything... Obviously, the main thing with a place specializing in used stuff is selection, but since people seemingly want to listen to crappy compressed MP3 files rather than less crappy compressed CDs, that is a crapshoot at best. Frankly, you're better off online and this chain seems to have gotten that memo, instead aiming squarely at collectible junk like various Funko figures. I hope the gambit works; it definitely didn't for Hastings... Part of the issue with these spots is that they seem to feel that they should get patrons to spend as much time in the store as possible, perhaps feeling this will lead to greater sales. Perhaps they think people want to endlessly sort through rows of randomly arranged items. I should like to disabuse them of that notion. It's annoying when the various used or new items are haphazardly arranged. Someone with a firm command of alphabetization should be putting these in order...daily. I only go to these stores now when I want to kill time or want incense, both of which they are mostly reliably able to assist with. That I go to a music store for reasons other than music should be concerning to them...I'm not sure that it is... Bottom line here is that the staff is nice and friendly and helpful and invested and passionate about the music and knowledgeable and all the kinds of things you want as a patron and what you would want as an employer, but I've been nervous for this local chain for a while and though this store is busier than most I've seen, including the one by the U, perhaps because it is currently the only game in town, they're still not doing it right. I hope they stick around, because, as I said, I love these kinds of shops, but there has not really been much of a reason to go into one for a while and this one didn't change anything there. If they start thinking of the customer and what they might want, perhaps this can survive...if not, I will definitely miss and lament this once mighty force. read more

What a fun store! Lots of unique merchandise and good customer service. If you are into retro, they also have some decent selections. I highly suggest this location if you are searching for a gift for that hard to buy for person on your list. read more

If they still sell concert tickets, be forewarned that they have a terrible system that goes down often. I was second in line to purchase tickets a few years ago. The first person in line got second row. Greywhale's system went down and by the time it came back up 15 minutes later, I was in the upper bowl. Never again. read more

Graywhale is literally like the candy shop for almost everyone who is looking for something. First thing I always like to mention is how nice all the employees are, and how quick they are to take care of the needs, wants, or questions you have as a customer walking in. The other thing to note, is Graywhale is one of the better stores to go to and request or buy all that awesome retro gaming gear, systems, and games. They also carry records, record players, headphones, movies, music CDs, comics, tiny figurines, etc. Seriously if you are needing a store to find all your needs and wants in entertainment, or even for collection purposes, give Graywhale a try, and stop in and get lost in all those goodies and treasures read more

I can't help but give this place praise. I was in town visiting and heard from a guy to visit this place and I am glad I did. The staff was awesome and helpful and they had a great selection of records. I really wish I lived near it, SLC has some damn awesome record stores! read more

Out of the Graywhales that are still around this one has one of the biggest selections, but is overall not that great. The workers here consistently get the wrong items with anything that's used, and seeing how that's 99% of their business that's a pretty big deal. The last time I went I was looking to burn my store credit and bought a used PS3. I was given the wrong cords and didn't realize it until I was home. I called up and was told that even though I'm 35 miles away, I live only ten miles away from another location and it wasn't my fault, that I would have to drive up there to have them fix the issue. Obviously that wasn't going to fly and the manager that was there luckily took care of the situation. But another time I have specifically bought items from here just to have them not be the proper item or not even be there at all causing me to go spend more time going to another location to have the issue fixed. Graywhale overall seems to be losing its touch, and this store seems to really be at the forefront of that decline. read more

Even if this was the last place in the world to buy physical music, pass it on. Clearly the people working here don't have any sense of organization or sense of what's going on because even if customers are paying a lot for a bunch of music or games, you'd think every case would be open and checked to make sure the right disc is in there. I even saw them doing this while my items were purchased but the guy somehow forgot that there were no disks in some of the cases, well, I got charged for them. It's not easy to just drive back as I was visiting and used to go here all the time, but after this experience, I'm going to stick with local places that actually carry more music than just geeky funko and weeb stuff. This place was cool many years ago, but now is just as bad if not worse than FYE because I see no quality control here. It's a shame, I've had so many better experiences just looking up smaller places because it seems if any place is a chain, you're gonna have people who break the system because of huge issues like this. I can't even get a refund because I didn't even get the product! It's not a refund if I paid for nothing! I just want my $12 back after spending over $60 on a bunch of CD's you'd think they would double check to make sure they didn't miss any but I'm all the way in California now with empty cases. This place has a beautiful selection of Neca action figures and Blu-rays! Plenty of Funko Pops and tons of records and music albums and soundtracks. The employees are well mannered and nice and, like any other person, they are willing to help you as long as you treat them with respect. Love the store and everything in it but some of the things are overpriced like several new releases like seriously $30? Even long after the movie hits street date it's still very pricey. Some of the bigger action figures are still overpriced and the older games are too. But with all those problems the store's pretty good. If they don't have an item you're looking for they can order one in if they can. To sum it all up. Great action figures, movies, books, and music to choose from! I especially love the Neca Alien stuff so please have more of that in stock :D read more
