I remember the early days, when Gray's was on the beach road in that old cinderblock building. Mom would shop while my brother and I played with the tom-toms and other toys conveniently located under the many racks of clothes. It was good times! Last June, on our anniversary, my hubby and I slipped down to the beach and stopped in, it's been over 50 years now. We bought six items of clothing, and I'm super pleased with all of them. The sweats for me (lovely willow color with a zippered crop top) look great on me, they're soft and wash well. I've worn the black cropped knit sweater many times, it really dresses me up. The hubster got three sweat shirts, and they all fit REALLY well. Not too snug, not too baggy. They look good, feel good, and wash well. We've planned a little day trip to the coast to add more of these quality clothes to our wardrobe. read more

Let me start by saying I like the merchandise selection in this store. I've been coming back for years. However, this last time my husband and I went a sales associate followed me around the store like she thought I was going to shoplift something. Her hovering was so uncomfortable I decided to not buy anything and left. It will be a long time before I go back! read more

Bottom Line: Name brand, quality clothing for the family and some beach souvenirs. Gray's Department Store is one of the nicest clothing stores on the Outer Banks and it has been in business for many decades. The store features mostly clothes for men and women and they sell brands like Tommy Bahama, Olukai, Sperry and Vera Bradley. In addition to clothes, they have some shoes and hand bags. Aside from nicer clothing, they also have some Outer Banks gear. They definitely have a higher quality selection of tshirts, sweatshirts and fleece jackets than any other store. The housewares selection is limited but they have a few items as well as some toys and gifts. The store is clean and well organized. The staff have always been friendly but some are more engaging than others. read more

I have shopped at Gray's for years when traveling to OBX. They are still a family owned business. This is there only location at around MM 4. The parking lot is has always been adequate for the amount of traffic they have. As a matter of fact I was saddened to find they very slow the day after Thanksgiving when everyone else was swamped. Like usual the lot was clean and well maintained. The inside is packed with both resort wear for men and women. Also you will find some touristy items, but not a lot. This store is the most upscale that you will find in OBX in my opinion. Name brand higher quality items like Tommy Bahama. Of course you pay for the nicer name brands too! That is why I fear they are not doing as well and nearby Belk is flourishing. What I will say on my last visit that disappointment is with around three staff no one approached me and asked for help. That is unusual and I'm not going to knock them down for one service blip on one visit. However, I will adjust if this occurs again. If you have nice taste, don't mind spending more and enjoy quality like I do this is your place. Support local and give them a try. read more

I attempted to exchange a pair of defective flip flops and was told no. I asked to speak to a manager and the manager said I'd have to speak with the owner who I made a request to speak with. The owner chose to ignore my multiple requests to speak. Caveat Emptor!! read more

we are in kitty hawk, for a few days,and we visited this beautiful store. they have some awesomely beautiful sweaters. but they also sell jewlery, beach wear, some really nice drinking glasses, and coffee mugs. for the kids they sell toys and stuffed animals. read more

Not your run of of the mill beach souvenir store. These folks are knowledgeable, will take the time to help you find what you're looking for (even if it's just a tshirt) and they do it joyfully. No cheap plastic the kids would beg for but will break 5 min after leaving the store. A nice refresh from the cookie cutter beach shops. My wife and I stopped in back in October . Not alot of customers in at the time usually due to this is in the off season. The staff was very helpful in locating what we were looking for. Grays carries the best quality of clothing around. When you are in the OBX area you need to stop in. We usually go mostly in the summer time and always stop in then also. read more

We went here while in OBX to find a tshirt for me. After I found what I was looking for, I was just looking around and the owner came up and started talking to us. He was really friendly. He told us all sorts of stories about fish caught by his brother and him to surfing stories. It was great. Loved his stories. He even pointed out a location of where one of the surfing pictures was taken. Great selection of clothes there too. I was glad we went there because it is a family owned business. read more

The salesperson was kind enough to secure a second item from another store, and when I returned to purchase it my entire family came in to buy mementos because it was such a high quality and unique place to stop! We've been coming to the Outer Banks for over 25 years now and visit Gray's store in Duck every single time we're here (and we come multiple times each year). We love the wide assortment of beach t-shirts and sweatshirts (lots of colors and styles and great quality!) as well as gift items (mugs, picture frames, decals, etc). As a family-owned business (not a national chain), the service is invariably friendly and courteous, no matter which store we're in. (Arin at the Waterfront Shops location was an example -- very friendly, welcoming, and helpful!) Thanks, Gray's -- we'll be back again later this summer! read more

Personally, I have always loved going shopping in Grays until recently. I walked into the store just to browse around, about 2 minutes into the store, a lady came up and asked me if I need help looking for anything (which was very helpful) after telling her I was just looking around she backed away. Out of the corner of my eye I could see she was watching my every move. Everything I touched she's began to stare intently like I was going to shoplift. It made me feel absolutely uncomfortable as I continued to walk around she began walking with me. I picked up a shirt that I liked and before I could check the price she told me that she needed to take and item and put it on hold for me behind the counter. Saying that I couldn't walk around holding the shirt. After that experience I found a little coaster that you put in your car cup holders and as I was picking one out to buy she was standing 2 feet behind me watching my hands. I have never been to a store where I felt uncomfortable and I will not be returning anytime soon. read more
