Multiple review for Jimmys Arlington and Grassfields Andover and Waltham. Not much of a difference between the three ... just the bread and the crowds. This place is one of my absolute favorites. It is also my husband's favorite. I have been going to Jimmy's since it was at the Burlington Mall. They have the best stuffed mushrooms. When that closed I thought all hope was lost until I figured out that there was one in Arlington. Then I found that there was Grassfields in Waltham and then another Grassfields in Andover. My favorite location to go is Jimmy's in Arlington. The waitresses there are all amazing very kind and very attentive. This is probably the busiest location that I go to. The only open seating is at the bar itself which kind of is a letdown. When you go to Grassfields in Andover they actually have open seating at the bar area which consist of booths. The one in Andover also never seems to be too crazy crowded. It's probably because of the open seating I've never had to wait. As for the food... They are so willing to let you mix and match any surf and turf option you can come up with. They adjust the price accordingly and do not charge you for the full price if you replace something more expensive. My personal favorite is the chicken teriyaki and scallops. My husband always gets steak tip and lobster pie. The chicken teriyaki is never dry ... always moist and the scallops are to die for. My husband loves their lobster pie and has tried to get lobster pie at many places but always goes back to Jimmy's for their's. And for the best part... Their strawberry shortcake ... try it!!!! Get it with the ice cream. It is an actual biscuit ... extremely crunchy .... holds the strawberry juice well .... gets only minorly soggy if you don't eat it quick enough. It is definitely big enough for two people to share. And once again the best one that I have found is definitely at Jimmy's in Arlington ... they tend to have the biggest one. I would never complain about the price. You can go to a fancy steakhouse and pay lots of money and get crappy food but here you pay a reasonable price and get really consistently good food. I have been going for many years and have zero complaints at any of the locations. I never have a hard time at these restaurants ... everything is cooked the same throughout all of them. Disappointed with the ICE cold steak tips. Ordered surf and turf(tips&scallops). Rice and scallops were piping hot, steak cold,sent it back , forgot to add Husbands steak tips were also cold. Waited about 25 mins. Finally caught waiter. No he said oh sorry forgot to tell you it would be about 20 mins to recook tips!! Meanwhile We we're stuck with just sandy scallops,no rice or anything.thought that was lousySpoke to manager and she tried to blame it on the runner not picking up on time. Have gone here for dinner for several years, never a bad meal, always great service, tonight was a major disappointment, steak tips were rare, were ordered medium, rice was cold. Send meal back, tips again were rare, and service was extremely poor. Waitress after initial order was never seen again. Will have to consider whether I will ever return to this restaurant. There's a reason why Grassfield's is consistently busy no matter what time of the day (or day of the week) I've gone there -- the food has remained the same great quality (and selection) for the past 20 years or so at great prices. My favorite dish has long been the crabmeat pie (made with what I believe are crushed Ritz crackers on top...yum) and the rice pilaf. I don't think the warm, wooded decor has been updated since it opened but it hasn't aged at all. Also I highly recommend the fried zucchini sticks, even if you're not a zucchini fan. They are delicious. The only reason I can't give five stars is because of their strawberry shortcake dessert; while the shortcake itself was house made and delicious, they use soggy, overly sweet canned strawberries instead of fresh ones. Alright Grassfields, we need to talk. Don't get me wrong, I still love you, but the last few times we've been together there's been something missing. It's not you, it's the food. When my dad wants a medium well steak, it shouldn't be redder than my medium rare. And the pilaf shouldn't be crunchy. I know. I know. I know. Some musings on Grassfields: I used to go here all the time in high school with my Dad and we called it Grass Stains... I think the average age of patrons hovers in the AARP range... I had a totally edible hamburger here recently and our bartender was incredibly nice... My friend swears by their rice pilaf side dish- which was, in fact, super tasty... This seems to be about one of two places near downtown Andover where you can watch football at the bar AND order food that doesn't come out of a vending machine... I wouldn't go there again on purpose but I wouldn't not go there, if you know what I mean. read more

This restaurant is amazing. The food is great and the service is fast and efficient. We always get our food fairly quickly even though they do get packed! I have been here 3 times and the longest I had to wait was like 10 minutes. The steak tips are cooked to your liking, they are tender and flavorful. Had lunch on a late Sunday afternoon. Definitely an older establishment. Wait staff was nice and polite, but not very timely. Had a filet with loaded potato and organic salmon with veggies. We also split a blue cheese salad. The salad had way too much blue cheese dressing and no blue cheese crumbles. Bacon was off a greasy grill, and so were the salmon veggies. Salmon was mediocre and so was the steak, though cooked to specification (the steak; salmon was overcooked). The loaded potato was not good, skip it. To top it all off, the wine we asked to be served with the entree came late when we were half way done with meal. Tried it as a yelp adventure. Won't return and would not recommend. read more

Nice little place. Was in town for work and had stopped in for the planet fitness. After the gym was ready to eat saw this place and went for it. Hat the teriyaki beef tips and lobster pie. These guys are sharp. Enter the dinning room mid week at lunch and if you are under 70 you are now the youngest person in the room. On a Wednesday afternoon this place was packed. How do they do it? 1. Price, price, price. Give them a good deal and they will come. But it is not price alone. 2. Service is excellent. This must be a tough crowd because our waitress apologized for the slowness of our meal. The timing seemed fine to me but I guess she is used to a more demanding clientele. 3. Food is very good. They bring you a large loaf of hot bread which I would advise you go easy on it. Portions are generous but good. My steak tips were excellent as was their rice pilaf. 4. The atmosphere is comfortable, access is good and parking is plentiful. This was a perfect place to take my mother to lunch. Did I mention I was the youngest person in the room outside of the staff? My steak was cooked to exactly the temperature I asked. My house salad seemed fresh enough for being iceberg lettuce and my potato was big and well, tasted like a potato. Prices are VERY reasonable compared to other steakhouses. I felt like I got a good meal for my money, would come back again. I came here because it was suppoed to be in my Yelp sweet spot (4* $$) and can't say I was totally disappointed. It just really is not a 4* by any stretch of the imagination (although it is indeed $$). The service was great. Food came timely. The prices were very reasonable. We had the seafood stuffed mushrooms, crab pie, and sirloin steak.The mushrooms were delucious and the sirloin was good. But we were very disappointed with the crab pie. The waitress described it as all lump meat crab with a panko crust topping. The lump was very limp and it had no flavor. It is called the Maryland crab pie. I'm from Maryland and never heard of it. They need to add some Old Bay, lemon pepper, garlic or something! Then they may call it Maryland crab. We had just finished our group meeting and our boss was taking us out for lunch. Having tired mostly every restaurant in the Andover area, Grassfields was the only one left out. Once we walked in the place was popping with friendliness, coolness of the AC, and warmth of a neighborhood spot to be seen at. I got the broiled scrod, boss the baked scrod and my co worker the baked salmon. We also ordered the meditterian salad to share. The salad was way better than expected. Fresh and filled with other veggies other than your typical filler of lettuce. The salad when well with their homemade warm bread loaf and whipped butter. WHen our entrees came we were so excited to see what our neighbors have been telling us for months to try. Food came out HOT and smelled like a fisherman's dream. Once I poked my fork into my scrod, I knew it was FRESH!!!!! The meet was tender, flaky and it looked amazing. The rice pilaf was done right also. Moist, flavorful and plenty. My coworkers salmon looked a little over cocked for my taste but she said it was amazing. With a little room in our tummies, we ordered their strawberry short cake dessert. I'm giving 4 stars due to the service. I had the steak tips with a baked potato. Steak cooked to order and was a little chewy. The potato was a disappointment. Cut in half on top and that made it cool off quicker and it was tiny and dried up. I wished I had ordered the rice. One of the best things was the bread, it was delicious nice and fresh and warm. Seems like a very busy place and the bar was packed. Could just barely get to the restroom through the crowd. Back to the food, I was surprised no draft beer. Really? What place doesn't offer a selection of draft. My friends and I had a couple of gift cards so that was why we went. Not sure this place would be one I'd go to again. This restaurant is absolutely fantastic. The food is delicious, the prices are great, and the staff is very friendly. We decided to have our rehearsal dinner here after having ate the restaurant several times. Since the restaurant doesn't take reservations, we weren't sure if they were going to be able to accommodate our party of 12. After speaking with management however, she advised a time when it would be easiest for us to come in. The night of the rehearsal we called a half hour before we were supposed to be there. The girl on the phone told the best man that they don't take call ahead seating, but as soon as I spoke with the manager, she remembered that we were coming, and the table was ready when we got there (around 8pm). Both of our families absolutely LOVED the food. I would recommend this restaurant to everyone in the area. All of the previous reviews say that there are a lot of old people, but I have yet to see an abundance of them there... it's a really good mix of all ages. read more

My boyfriend and i drove an hour just to have dinner here. He was putting on his mask in the entrance and the lady at the front scolded us and said " YOU NEED A MASK!" like were children and not customers. We understand, but my boyfriend was IN THE MIDDLE of putting it on. The restaurant was very empty, there were only 3 other parties, and out of the WHOLE restaurant, she sits us right next to a group of four other people. SOCIAL DISTANCING! They could have had COVID and you sit us RIGHT next to them when you're giving us a hard time about him and his mask. We decided to leave because of her attitude and even as we were getting up from our table, the same lady gives a smirks and points to her mask. You're rules are when were moving around the building have our masks on. We hadn't even left our table! We understand you're rules and had no problem abiding by them but because of the the blonde lady with glasses at the front, we will never come here again. You're giving my boyfriend a hard time about his mask and then you sit us next to one of the only people in the restaurant not 6 feet away. read more

My wife and I mad our annual trip to the area to attend a Patriots game and found this spot through Yelp! We had to wait about 40 minutes for a table but found it was well worth the wait. Sara, our waitress was quite attentive and helpful. We started with the fried calamari appetizer and found it to be crispy, well seasoned and quite tasty. My wife had the Salmon Royale and raved over the preparation. Well seasoned and moist. I had the Lobster pie and sirloin tips. The chef did a fantastic job on the grill as the tips were perfect. Normally it's five stars great night. However, this night they had no Riesling wine. If you only carry one type, how the heck can you run out and not keep it in stock? We went the other night with my parents. It was only a 10 minute wait which was great. We ordered our drinks and they came back fairly quickly. Our waitress pushed the appetizers a little too much even though we didn't want any. She took our order and tried to push a side salad that didn't come with the dinner, but of course didn't mention it was extra. Our dinner did come pretty quickly. The steak tips were really yummy but it seemed strange they don't do mashed potatoes. My husband said his stuffed shrimp were great as well. My dad had broiled scallops and my mom had some kind of steak. They both enjoyed them. Then dessert came and of course our waitress pushed dessert. Not that I have anything against old folks. I live next to a nursing home so I see it all the time, but jeez I thought I was at a geriatric convention today at lunch. We had a work lunch meeting. Everyone was at least twice if not three times my age (I'm 31). I ordered the scallops and steak tips with a baked potato for the unbelievable price of $10. Yup. $10. $2 to add a salad. The tips were fantastic, cooked perfectly. Scallops were delicious as well. Salad had a good mix of greens. A few others got chicken teriyaki that was moist and flavorful and the rice pilaf was buttery and yummy too. Great value. Good people watching too. I love old timers who order a martini with lunch. Possibly the best steak house and seafood restaurant in Andover. My only regret is that I discover this place too late in my trip. I had the teriyaki steak. They had the right amount of the sauce, not smothered like some other place. What makes their steak unique is that it is much more tender than other places. I suspect they have a secret marinating technique. This makes the steak better than Texas Roadhouse or Outback. I ordered this with the Lobster Pie which was very good also. If I ever come to Andover again, I will try out other dish such as the swordfish. read more

Grassfield's is the kind of place that has a line out the door at 5:30 on Saturdays. Not because the place is in such high demand but because the average customer goes to bed at 8pm. In other words - they're old. All kidding aside, Grassfield's is actually pretty good. I'd really like to fault it for some level of mediocrity, or poorly executed trendy apps, or having some kind of old person 'mashed up food' menu. They really have none of that. The food is tasty and really well priced.The range is great. We've been happy with the entrees, salads and desserts. The service has been friendly and overall stellar. I agree with the last reviewer - I have been going to Grassfields my whole life and I love it, even now that I live closer to Boston, have travelled the world and eat at such a variety of places - I am still so happy to come here with my parents and get the most amazing steak tips! Prices are good, chicken terriyaki, salmon, lamb and steak tips are amazing, and the usually have a good rotation of specials and special, seasonal martinis and blended drinks. But honestly, the steak tips are to die for, and I'm a pretty hard-core carnivore. The atmosphere is nice but unpretentious, the waitstaff is always helpful and friendly. Loved the free bread, and rice is good, but not so much for there best steak. It had very little flavor, tasted like it was boiled than charcoal grilled. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and don't smother you with "genuine" concern, just the right amount of "Is everything all right."
