A small newsagents in Warrington town centre, not too far away from Golden Square or Warrington…read moreCentral Station, you might be expected to wait outside the store due to the size of the store, I wouldn't expect to see more than 3/4 people inside the store due to its' size even when the pandemic is over. The staff did seem friendly and helpful. My check out experience was quick, and unlike some other small newsagents, they didn't have a problem giving me a receipt. Pricing was competitive in most areas, but some essentials such as milk were a tad overpriced. Many of the items which were priced at a competitive rate, had to be as many of the branded items had prices on the label which is what some brands do to protect their pricing strategy. There are no parcel facilities here which is surprising but there are other choices for this around Warrington such as Royal Mail at WHSmith, DPD at Millets, myHermes at Great Outdoors and Collect+ at the Golden Square Information area. Useful store to have in Warrington if you don't fancy going to the larger ASDA supermarket nearby. 3*

Downstairs they have books and magazines although the range is not as big as their other store on Church Street. The staff will order a book for you if they do not have it in stock. Upstairs they have a good range of stationary for school, college, university and just general use. They have branded ranges such as Hello Kitty, and their own budget range of stationary. There is also a Post Office branch on this floor which is now the only branch in the city centre, the nearest branch being in the business district. It is only small but has lots of cashier desks which are all open when it is busy. This is a small but perfectly formed store which is excellent.

I have always been a shopper of WHSmith and I always will be despite the fact that I think it was more conveniently located back in 2008 on Church Street (now where River Island is). Its current location serves two small floors with the Post Office a trek upstairs in the same building. Most of the time I need to visit Smith's or the Post Office for some reason or another whether it's to use their photo-me vendor or to buy stamps. Personally, I feel this is a terrible move for WHSmith and the Post Office as both have decreased in space and situated further away from the main walkways. They have attempted to "kill two birds with one stone" but for me, this has backfired. Their new format has certainly taken time to get used to.

The store was small, but they had a decent selection of most items you'd expect to find from WHSmith, including a lottery desk at the back, meaning there were two separate tills to help ease queuing, they had a small selection of drinks too but sadly they didn't stock Lipton Ice Tea. 3* - This store is OK, one of the better newsagents within the town centre (especially if you don't fancy going into a supermarket), and a unique concept.

The rise in express supermarket branches opening around the country, as well as supermarkets now…read moreselling a wide range of magazines and newspapers, has resulted in a decrease in popularity for local newsagents for whom sweets, drinks and magazines are all their business, as opposed to just one strand of their overall business. As a result, there are fewer newsagents around these days, and those that are still going are generally rather underwhelming. However, every so often you come across a newsagent much like K & C Douglas in Crosby. This reasonably sized newsagent offers a very good selection of sweets and drinks (we're talking a wide range of confectionery here, not just a few Snickers and Chomps) all at prices that are no worse than elsewhere (sweets aren't cheap anywhere these days). K & C Douglas also offers a very good selection of magazines in their shop, providing the usual glossies for the ladies as well as more specialist publications for those of you with more unusual hobbies and interests (Angling Weekly? Powerslam Wresting Magazine? Come on down).
