Grape Leaves is a sole proprietorship with a couple of locations. I learned about it by trying one of their chicken Shawarma's a friend got me for lunch. Either I was famished, or it was really that good. I was in the area at Somerset Mall, so I decided to stop by for an early dinner and let the afternoon rush hour pass. The decor is middle eastern with tiles and earth tones. Lighting is a little dimmer to add to ambiance. Booths line the sides and tables are down the middle row of the establishment. We were seated at one of the booths. One thing my kids noticed was a little contraption that appeared to be attached to the wall. It was round with several buttons on it that appeared to be a method for informing your server that you need something. The button. See pics. There were 4 buttons in total, 3 in a triangular pattern and one in the middle. The buttons were labelled with (clockwise from top left, then center) "Pay", "Clear", "Water", and "Call". My assumption was that they were self evident from the labels. Pay if you want the check, Clear if you want your table cleared, Water for refills, and Call for everything else. I can tell you the "Water" and the "Pay" works perfectly. The servers aid knew to bring water to our exact table. This is similar to Asian restaurants whereby they will leave you alone and you have to flag them down if you need them for anything; but it's better because its effective, pressing one of the buttons actually gets you a response!. 5 stars for a functioning paging system. The menu covered all your mainstays for Middle Eastern fare. I selected the Shish combo for two to ensure variety. It consisted of Rice; Beef Shish Kebab; Chicken Shish Kebab; Shish Kafta; and two sides (soup or salad). Rice. American long grain was used, not Indian or Jasmine. This was a bit disappointing, and something that can easily be rectified. But until they do, 2 stars. Beef Shish Kebab. Chunks of marinated beef grilled and charred. The pieces were slightly on the small side, and the flavours and spices were light; but they were cooked to a nice medium preserving tenderness and moisture. 3,5 stars. Chicken Shish Kebab. These pieces were larger than the beef, but there were fewer of them per skewer. With what tasted like the same marinade, these came out dry. Being chunks of chicken breast, they remained relatively tender. 2 stars. Kafta Kebab. Kafta is ground beef and lamb, with parsley, garlic, and spices. The dish came with to shorter pieces, but together was a little longer than the average; however, the girth could have been "beefed up" (pun intended). On the taste side, the flavour was good. Probably my favourite of the platter. 4 stars. Toum. This was among the best I've ever had. Made perfectly in terms of texture, weight, and flavour intensity. Toum is a simple dish in terms of ingredients, but one that is difficult to master. An emulsion like aioli or mayo, this sauce is nothing more than garlic, oil, and lemon juice. My kids and I absolutely love this stuff and eat it with all the meats, and the bread. Grape Leaves toum had a subtle punch of garlic (definitely noticable), without being spicy or overpowering. 5 stars. Bread. Made fresh, the bread was hot, and crispy on the outside. It was not too thick and nice and hollow inside. A slightly sweet aftertaste provides for a nice finish. I always order a second basket just to check for consistency of the pocket. Like every other Middle Eastern restaurant I've been to, there's always at least one that doesn't rise properly. It was no different here, so the bread is on par. 3 stars. Due to space constraint, I will to be curt with the remaining dishes. Crushed lentil soup. Yellow and red-orange variety used. Very smooth texture. Supporting flavours lacking. 2,5 stars. Salad. Dark leafy greens & lighter crunchier stalks. Purple cabbage, tomatoes, pickles, and pita chips for added color and texture. Oil dressing is flavorful. Better than other places. 4 stars. Sesame paste. Traditional. Slightly salty end taste. Prefer to eat dishes with Toum. 3 stars. I was a bit disappointed in the platter for 2. No sauce for the rice. Could have easily included a cream chop to round out the variety. Dishes were hit and miss (good meat with sub-par rice is not OK), and I think they need to be more consistent overall. This is not to say the place is bad or that the food is not authentic, it's just not my preferred taste for Middle Eastern cuisine. The Middle East is an expansive area and local flavours will inevitably vary. I like the subtle flavours of cumin and tumeric, and it just was not noticeable here. Do I think the food is authentic, yes I do; but taste are subjective, and everyone will fancy their own. Perhaps mine is just not Lebanese, but rather those parts of the Middle East that are a little further south. 3 stars. Been coming here for years and while the food is usually very good, since the plaza it's in started a major renovation, the service has unfortunately gone from ok, to unreasonably slow. There have been a few times where I sat down at lunch in a nearly empty restaurant and didn't see a server/host for almost 10 minutes, then left. I completely understand how construction can be disruptive to businesses, but to cut staff so severely is further damaging business. Hopefully they will be able to survive the updates. read more

The first 2 times we had food from here was absolutely wonderful. The last 3 orders have been sadly, nowhere near the standard of the first 2. Two days ago we ordered lemon chicken and got burned, dried, rubbery grilled chicken with no lemon sauce in site. Grape leaves were 2 different colors; the darker ones were mushy or hard. Leftovers from the weekend? They advertise as 'Fresh". Not fresh tomato kibbe, this too was hard and crunchy. Bread hard as a rock. Asked for no almonds due to a nut allergy and got almonds on all the rice. Crappy food for $90. We threw most of this away. We will not be ordering again from this restaurant. I do enjoy this spot, only ate here a few times but the food is good. I question how clean the ingredients are as some dishes are soaked in oils. I'm guessing either canola oil or a type of palm oil which personally I really dislike. Prices are pretty up there so make sure you are getting the right meals with the right portion size. read more

This restaurant is conveniently located near Whole Foods and TCBY's so there's tempting dessert options nearby. I've been here a ton of times. I wouldn't say this place is the best Mediterranean food I've had, but they make awesome Tabbouli! The bread that comes with is really thick pita style but it's made fresh. One of my favorite restaurants, especially for Carry-out because it holds so well. I have tried almost everything on the menu and have never been disappointed! They are fast and professional. The decor and ambiance is extremely relaxing. Having fresh pressed juice available is such a bonus when you need that afternoon pick me up. My favorite dish here is the fried cauliflower appetizer. I can down two plates easily! The bread with garlic butter is also like crack. I love it when they bring the bread out piping hot. Once you pop you just can't stop! The falafel appetizer is just ok, a bit too dry in my opinion. I like falafel better when it's made out of Fava beans and is naturally green in color. This is one of my favorite go-to spots for lunch (carry-out) because the prices are good, the food is tasty and the drive is only two minutes. The quality of food served is always spot-on - however the attention to detail isn't. Hence my 4 out of 5 stars... For example: One week, I might order a chicken shwarma sandwich (no pickles) with a bowl of crushed lentil soup. I'll get exactly what I ask for. The next week I might place the same order, but I'll wind up finding in my bag a shish tawook sandwich instead. I've never complained, partly because I'm already in my car driving back and partly because the shish tawook is still darn good. The crushed lentil soup is always delicious. Always. Occasionally it isn't as warm as it should be, however. If I had to drive 15 minutes before eating it, this would be excusable. But since I'm literally a mile away... it really should still be piping when I get back to work. On a final note, the bread they serve is like crack. Not that I know what crack is like, but I imagine that this bread would be similar. (Work with me here, people.) It's addictive and ALWAYS hot. Crispy outside, doughy center... OM NOM NOM NOM NOM. My girlfriend and I went and did start off with our usual lentil soup and hummus and garlic spread...which was fantastic as always! We decided to try the cauliflower appetizer with tahini sauce...I wasn't expecting much but WOW....perfectly sauteed(crispy, not greasy) cauliflower and burnt onions and that fantastic sauce...a MUST have...add some hummus to it and it is a winner! Also tried for the first time, surprisingly, the veggie grape leaves....strong flavor to the grape leaves themselves and they were stuffed with a delicious sauce and rice........however, we had gorged ourselves on the soup and bread we could only eat one each. Grape Leaves aren't my favorite thing in the the world, but these were truly top notch! Service was good once again...hopefully it is improving! read more

I generally pick food up from the Troy Grape Leaves location; I've never eaten in. I usually eat vegetarian food, so Grape Leaves is a great option for me for work lunches. I am a big fan of the mujudara sandwich, the hummus, the grape leaves, the bread, the fries and the fattoush. My coworker raves about how perfectly spiced the chicken shwarma sandwich is. The bread isn't pita; instead it comes directly out of their new wood-burning oven. It is always warm and wonderful. The mujudara is great, and the grape leaves are just the right mixture of soft, yummy spice. The only reason I'm giving four instead of five stars is because most of the food is kind of expensive. You can go cheap with a sandwich, but they aren't very big. read more

I've had some sandwiches, the crushed lentil soup, and the vegetarian combo here. All were decent. I liked that the crushed lentil soup came with a lemon wedge. Not as tasty as the soup at Lebanese Grill but still good. My only complaints... -There was way too much lemon juice in the tabbouli. I think it was scooped with a ladle or something because it was swimming in lemon juice and was, as a result, ridiculously sour. -They give you pitas and baked pitas in the beginning. I wish they would also provide garlic sauce or olive oil or something, but I get it, they want me to order some hummus. -The restaurant is really tiny and has a really drafty door. Eating there in the winter is unbearably cold. All in all, Grape Leaves is A-OK. I very much prefer Lebanese Grill (fresh pitas, and the crushed lentil soup is amazing) and La Marsa (delectable fresh pitas and free, yummy garlic sauce) over Grape Leaves. I pretty much only go to Grape Leaves if I am feeling really lazy as it is closer to my house, or if I have a coupon, which you can sometimes find in the mail. read more

Garlic, hummus, shwarma, mjadra are all good. I misordered last time and got $25 worth of food. You'd think that since it was just me, the waitress would have clarified but she didn't. I didn't reduce the stars because I don't do that for service....but It was a bummer. Also there was a major argument between management and a waiter. It was in Arabic but from what I gathered the waiter wanted a table because he previously got a crummy tip but it wasn't his turn. It was awkward to watch. I LOVE their chicken schwarma and I think the hummus is divine but the effort it takes for the waiter to refill my water or to get my order correct isn't even worth me going any more. Oh Grape Leaves, how you taunt me. I returned to this place in the hopes of a repeat performance of outstanding service I got the last time I was there (the blonde! she is the best) but it seems as if I had the good fortune of being trapped in a mirage for the previous visit. 3.5 stars - for its standard, bread and butter, Lebanese goodness. I could eat here consistently, but that doesn't mean it's exceptional, or even great. It's a place I would come to and know that I was going to get a good, cheap meal every single time. One thing that does stand out to me is the chicken shawerma. For less than five bucks, you get a fantastic shawerma that will rival or best any other place you might try. I'm somewhat of a shawerma fanatic, and Grape Leaves does it right. For that reason, I give it the extra half star. Otherwise, I would give it only three. Come here and know you'll have a good experience. The food was good - fresh, hot, nicely seasoned - however I can only give this Grape Leaves location one star because the service was lousy. When we arrived, the restaurant was not crowded but nevertheless, we had to get our own menus and our own silverware because no one brought them over. The waiter did not even say hello when he first approached the table; he said only, "What do you want to order." This with no eye contact, bored expression. When he brought the food, he used the entree plates to push the appetizer plates to the back of the table. Really? He did not check back with us even once after the entrees were served...so we had to fetch our own to-go boxes and walk across the length of the restaurant to ask the waiter for our check. Forget about refills on the water glasses. Very disappointing. Let me add that we've been to the Oak Park location of Grape Leaves and the service there was terrific. read more

We get take out from here regularly. Love their hummus and chicken shwarmas! We typically get a few sandwiches, rice, and grilled veggies. All of it is very tasty! On occasion they are little light on the shwarma garlic mix and they are dry. The pita bread is also sooooooooo good here. Freshly oven baked, my daughter could eat these by the dozen and they are fairly big, The fries here (I know, not a place known for fries) are frikin awesome. Every person I have shared them with is blown away. The owners are pretty cool, they know me and always make sure I have a few pitas for my daughter. I have close friends that are lunch regulars here and many immediate family members in the area that are frequent patrons. Outdoor seating too which is a plus. At 8:45 I walked into the restaurant for a carry out order. As stated online the restaurant closes at 9, and the open sign was still lit up. A worker was sitting at the bar and told me I could not place an order because they were closed. I stated it is 8:45 and the open sign is still on. He asks the guy in the kitchen something who states 'sorry we're closed'. I replied 'the door was unlocked, I am standing here in your restaurant with 15 minutes before closing and your open sign is on. How can you tell me you're closed?' To which they shut off ALL the lights in the restaurant and it was pitch black, while I was still in the lobby. I will never be going to this restaurant ever again. That is not how you treat a person, your staff had complete disrespect toward me for shutting off the lights while I was still in the lobby. read more
