I can't say enough about the quality & service at Hanley & Williams Lumber Co. in Westerly, RI! I…read morehave made several purchases at the retail store and have had a couple of deliveries from them as well and from the Hanleys and their staff at the store to the delivery person they all have been extremely knowledgeable, helpful and professional. I also know a lot of people from MA, RI, & CT that have said the same thing about their experiences with Hanley & Williams. Like the gentleman who wrote a review before mine, I to am very familiar with lumbar yards and understand no matter who you purchase lumber from you should know to expect some imperfections because they are milled and bundled in mass quantities, especially with pressure treated lumber. Here's the difference, you can go to a Home Depot or Lowes and spend the day picking through their lumber and NEVER find finish quality or go to a place like Hanley & Williams and start with a higher quality lumber and feel comfortable knowing you can return any imperfect pieces and hand pick them yourself or call them and they will come exchange them for you when the delivery truck goes back out. As a knowledgeable do-it-yourselfer who relies on a company like Hanley & Williams you just cant beat that. To the entire staff at Hanley & Williams - excellent job .. keep it up!

I first bought a fiberglass pre-hung door unit with decorator glass, it was beautiful and had my…read morecontractor install it. Then the misery started, standard lock set pre-bored holes were out of alignment. Replace slab, second door had uneven jamb edge and would not close properly without hitting the frame. Replace slab, 3rd door alignment to the striker holes in frame off by 1/4". Guy came out, said it was the installation fault, BS... bottom line is these slabs have very poor quality control. After many weeks, finally an independent contractor was sent out and chipped away at the door until it would close properly and the lock set would engage. Not the installation - the door slab was the problem each time. the door and frame themselves are good quality and priced well, the quality control and time for delivery however, not very good. If I was not happy with the final product - one star would be too many. Good thing... they did finally stand behind their poor product until the issues were resolved - but that was a complete headache experience. Next; in the timeline of the above, I foolishly ordered kitchen cabinets for my kitchen remodel. Yes, the cabs were priced very well and the design by Renee was very good - better than 3 other vendors who incorrectly supplied designs that were not to the CAD spec I created. So I went with Builders, here is where buyers should take note of the Kingston Collection/Stone Harbor cabinets (if possibly not all cabinets made by GHI). 1: GHI is a China based company, which means... it takes forever and a day to get them. 2: Base cabinets do not have full width shelves, only half width (depth). After asking about this, I was told, that's the way it is (really an absurd policy) and sorry (doesn't make it right). So if buying cabinets from them, make sure you understand ALL the details up front. All the cabinets now here, look very nice - but there is splitting of the some of the sides from assembly, not a big issue because they will be hidden when installed - but again - quality control is an issue with units purchased from Builders. Bottom line, Builders has great prices, but you DO get what you pay for. I will never buy "units" from these folks again - possibly raw materials, but never again any unit based products. I'll also add that the staff there is friendly, helpful and want to do the "right thing", but they really have no control of the products they sell - so be sure to do your own due diligence, the devil is in the details, before making a purchase at Builder Surplus.

I'm trying to paint a house, barn & garage. We've always gotten the stain at UBS. They tell me there is only 1 person in the place that knows how to tint. Apparently they don't keep good records. I was there in October and Gil helped me out and tinted the stain for me. Two weeks ago, John tinted the stain for me. Now I'm trying to get the last 7 gallons in the store (hard to find base) and their "one guy" is out sick, but I can buy the 7 gallons in Richmond and take them to their Westerly store to see if someone might be able to help me (WTF). It is not an option to send an employee from Westerly to Richmond to cover. I'm leaving the place this morning and Gil is in the little building where you have to stop so they can check your receipt. UNBELIEVABLE! I called and canceled the order and told the guy on the phone he should contact their Richmond store so they're not stuck with 7 gallons of my color if the guy should come to work. A very mismanaged business ... no wonder they don't bother opening Richmond on Saturdays. It is the only place I could find the base stain we've been using ... $58.84/gallon out the door. What really sucks is I now have to change the color and start painting all over again.

Unique among the…read moreindependent hardware stores in the area, they cater to contractors and specialize in building supplies. Because they sell to professionals, they carry higher quality tools and supplies than the more typical homeowner-focused hardware stores. They also have a great selection of paints and stains, including Benjamin Moore. They are also distinguished by their lumberyard. They carry a broad selection of quality wood, from small molding pieces to plywood and long boards and milled products, and their knowledgeable employees can help you figure out what you need for a project. They buy better lumber than the big stores, so you don't need to root through stacks looking for acceptable boards. Once you place your order, drive in to the lumberyard, and employees will make any cuts you need and help load the wood into your vehicle. They also deliver, for no additional charge, a handy service for long boards and large orders, and a necessity if you can't fit lumber in your vehicle. The staff is very knowledgeable about lumber and building supplies, and have helped me many times when I wasn't quite sure what I needed for a building project or how to go about making something. Because they know many local contractors, they can also make recommendations when you need to hire someone to do a job. If you go there, mind the hours, because they are closed on Sundays, and also close earlier in the day than other area hardware stores. Willard's is an incredible resource in the area, with a great selection of high-quality building products and supplies, knowledgeable employees (many of whom have been there many years), and great customer service. They also deliver. Need I say more?
