Dr. Dewitt was great to work with! However, the other staff I encountered weren't the greatest. The receptionist hardly looked me in the eye and just loudly said "DRIVER'S LICENSE AND INSURANCE PLEASE." No one wears a name tag and no one introduced themselves.. never knew who it was working with me or what they were doing. Last year, July 2023, I had an eye exam and needed new glasses. Big surprise. I went to GRO was because they're the only place in town that offers magnetic clip on sunglasses. The guy helping me asked if I wanted the transition sunglasses and I told him no because I wanted the clip on sunglasses. Everything seemed to go well. It took nearly 3 months for my glasses to arrive. I kept calling and got different excuses as to why it was taking so long. Very soon after I got my glasses, less than a week, I noticed that there were issues looking through the lenses. Spots of light all over the place. I went back to see what the problem was and they tell me that there was no anti-glare coating on the lenses. I told the guy that checked me out that I wanted everything but the transition sunglasses because I was getting the magnet clip on sunglasses. Apparently he screwed it up and didn't add anything to my lenses. It cost me another $100 to get this added. It took another 3 weeks to get my glasses back. Last week, less than 1 year of wearing my glasses, one of the magnets came out of my lenses. This made my clip on sunglasses useless. I went in today to see about getting this fixed. I was told that since I didn't have a warranty that it would "probably" cost $50, she really didn't have a clue. The magnet that I need replaced is almost as small as a pin head. She then told me that they would have to send my glasses back to the lab for the repair. She then said, seriously, that the other option would be to order new lenses. I said, irritated, that that would be over $500 and she responded by saying "yeah". I told her that I would never return to GRO and that I have never had such horrible service in my life. I walked out. During this whole ordeal they acted like it was MY PROBLEM, not theirs. The ridiculous delays, the conflicting excuses and I was powerless. They had my money and all I could do was wait. I DO NOT recommend anyone using GRO for yours frames and lenses. Take your script and go somewhere else. SVS has always treated me well and I've never had any issues with them. They just don't offer clip on sunglasses. read more

Creepy doctor, didn't bill my vision insurance and charged $200 for a less-than-10-minute appointment.

Couldn't get an appointment in Kalamazoo to have my cataracts removed, they were scheduling four months out. A friend told me about Grand Rapids Opthalmology (GRO). I called them and got a consultation for the following day. Dr Muallem was very professional and suggested the Light Adjustable Lenses, which corrects the near and far sightedness. He said that there was a 99.7% success rate. I had the surgery a couple of weeks later, five days apart. Three weeks later I returned to see Dr Flikkema for the adjustments, a week apart. Finally the sealing took place and now I have 20/20 vision and no glasses needed. I found out later that only the large cities have this procedure. I couldn't be more pleased. Only downside was the 50 miles one way (9 times) trips to GRO. All in all definitely worth it. read more

It's unfortunate to have educated doctors require paper masks that have been proven ineffective in spread of COVID! I asked for an N95 mask which they don't hand out, so I waited in my car for my mom who I brought to the eye appt. I'm healthy and not vulnerable to COVID/natural immunity. I won't be back nor will I recommend GRO-Walker to anyone who wants professionals who care abt science to care for their eyes. Very sad, they have an attractive facility. read more

I can't speak for every doc here but the retinal specialist I see is awesome. There is one woman here that is too aggressive when checking eye pressures. I just avoid her. Try to plan on visiting on a cloudy day. Dilated pupils are no fun on a sunny day. read more

Grand Rapids ophthalmology has been my favorite eyeglass place for years! I've always loved the doctors and the speedy service. The front desk woman was very kind to me, despite the fact I left my insurance card at home. Everyone was so professional and accommodating! The reason I gave them four stars, is because I requested to come back another day to look at glasses, since I was tired and just worked a 13-hour night shift. I felt peer pressured into looking at glasses with a saleswoman, and she didn't talk to me much. She just handed me glasses to try on. I understand they make a commission, but this woman was giving me outrageously priced frames. She gave me her card and I never went back. Unfortunate. read more

These folks are super pro level. Like the check-in process. They are full service, cover most all of West Michigan and even out to the Lakeshore. Looks like they have a solid selection of frames and you can even reorder contacts through their online patient portal. My one critique is that you may be waiting some time to be seen, even after your scheduled appointment time. read more

I did not like the service or the products that they said are the caddy of lenses , I spent a lot of money on these lenses and it i not clear as the ones before it without spending the extra money on a so called upgrade . And when I express dislike for the lenses and the quality , I get attitude as if I should be happy with what they give me , as a black man I feel it can be because I am black so I should know my place and don't expect full service , so I will take my money to someone that treats with the most respect dew any person poor rich young or old ,and yes black or white. read more

Dr Gindzin is a very good doctor! He is personable and friendly. Most important--he is an expert at his work.

I had a condition with my right eye that generated a blind spot. They have been great up until recently. So, i was do for new glasses. I figured before I get new glasses lets go talk about getting Lasik done. Called up GR Ophthalmology since I have to see a specialist there for my right eye. Every 6 months for the past couple years I had to go in for a review to ensure the damage to my retina, which has caused a blind spot in the center of my vision in my right eye, has not gotten any worse. When the condition had first appeared a few years ago. I was in to seem them every few weeks. Well after talking with the rep and them looking over records with the specialist. They told me I wouldn't be a candidate for another year or 2 because of the condition in my right eye.I told the person that I kinda figured, but was worth a shot asking. It was then after this that the rep told "As well you would need to have your cataracts dealt with first.". At this point I was in shock. As no one once in all the times i had been in to see them that I had cataracts. I then asked her to check the file to make sure it was mine. I was ensured it was. I then spent the next hour on the phone playing the on Hold transfer game trying to get a appoint to figure out what was really going on with my eyes. As of right now my entire trust in them and diagnosis of my eyes has been called into question and I am currently in the progress of have my normal doctor get me a referral to a group then Grand Rapids Ophthalmology. All so I can get a second opinion on the issue to make sure what is really going on with my eyes is what's going on. read more

Based on this visit, I would not recommend GRO to any one !! All previous visit with Dr Gindzin I would for sure. He is wonderful, caring and honest.!!! This visit I saw Dr VanderLugt, I have seen him a couple of times in the past and I was happy with him, but this time between him and the female that checked me out, I would not go back. I have been a patient of Dr Gindzin for years and well as my Mom before she passed. I trust Dr Gindzin completely. Dr VanderLugt said that there were no signs of the two conditions DR Gindzin diagnosed me with for years. I complain of blurry vision in my right eye. I was told by the male who took me back to the room, Dr VanderLugt , and Amy in the eye glasses department that the reason I had blurry vision was that the lenses were very badly scratched and I needed new lenses. Amy did adjust my glasses and I asked for a copy of my RX knowing that I could not afford the almost $500 price tag for two lenses !!! Next I went to check out and it was a nightmare. Dr Gindzen sees me usually every 6 months, I am an insulin depend diabetic. I was told that I didn't need to come back for a year. I said that I wanted my appointment with DR Gindzin and was told NO it needed to be with DR VanderLugt!! Three times I was told it need to be with Dr VanderLugt after I repeatly said I wanted Dr Gindzin that he has been my Dr for years. So I was so upset I said I was not coming back and she said that is up to me. I finally said I wanted a note sent to Dr Gindzin asking why I couldn't see him ? I got a call the next day saying yes I could see Dr Gindzin and he wanted to see me in 6 months !!! I went right to Eye Glass World where I got my glasses less than a year ago so still had a guarantee on the lenses. On the way driving there I noticed my vision was better. When I got there I told them I needed my glasses checked for scratches and cleaned. ( No one at GRO could get them cleaned !!!! ) They were cleaned and I was told there were hardly scratched !!!! Once the lenses were cleaned and glasses adjusted my vision has been perfect !!!! read more

My family and I have all been going to Grand Rapids Ophthalmology for years. Dr. Vanderlugt is very caring and knowledgeable, and he is great with kids. The staff in the optical area are also outstanding. We have worked with Melissa and others who have all been extremely friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Sometimes the task of picking out just the right frames can seem overwhelming, but they make it easy and fun. I highly recommend them. read more
