Switched from a previous provider to GR Ophthalmology as it was closer to home. BIG MISTAKE. Worse eye exam I've had in years. Was lacking in detail compared to exams given by my previous provider. Getting new glasses was like dealing with a crooked used car salesman. Got new glasses and I they make my sight worse. I will never go back to this place. Also, very expensive. read more

My EMERGENCY CONTACT received multiple texts and emails regarding my bill. Meanwhile, I received two emails. That's it. Not even a paper bill. When I clicked the link in the email, I discovered my EMERGENCY CONTACT'S phone number in the field for my number. I hadn't even set up ANY online account until I had to deal with this issue, and there was the wrong phone number that someone had input. Can you say HIPPA violation? read more

Been standing in the lobby for 10 minutes they have one person working the whole place is pretty much dead there's nobody behind the desk for the doctor's part and there's one person working in the optical part and she's busy so they are way understaffed away under employed and can't do anything in a timely manner read more

I don't understand how people are reviewing that the staff is rude. I have been coming here for a few years (Beltline) and everyone is extremely polite, professional and welcoming and I also love the staff in the eyeglass side as well. I recently had cataract surgery and chose the LAL lenses. My care throughout with the surgeon and the doctor making the LAL adjustments was wonderful. My only negative is that I knew the LAL lenses were an additional (high) cost and I fully agreed to that, but it was not clearly discussed how much they were billing for the "other" portions and of course, I understand it has a lot has to do with your personal insurance, copays and deductibles, but I think we could have plugged in the info and figured out what it would have been with a quick call to my Insurance Co. instead of the "surprise" after. My advise is to be pro-active with your questions and I wish I had been more assertive financially as it is also my responsibility to be aware. I AM happy though, with my results and the care I received...which was excellent! read more

The only reason for a low review is that GRO, itself, does not have confidence in its providers meeting the standard of care in Michigan. That is, GRO requires a patient to "agree and acknowledge that Grand Rapids Opthalmology is not liable for the actions or omissions of, or the instructions given by the provider(s) who treat me while I am a patient." No exception. If valid, this would allow a provider under the influence of alcohol or drugs to mistreat a patient. Or a provider to otherwise commit malpractice, with no recourse for the victimized patient. This is hidden in a "consent to treat," HIPAA consent, financial responsibility, etc. several page adhesion contract form. It is far more than a recognition that there are no guarantees and the practice does not involve an exact science--all of which are reasonable disclosures. A professional that attempts to disclaim needing to act in a professional manner is Unprofessional. read more

My dad is an 89 year old shut in. I brought his eye glasses in to be adjusted. I've worn glasses since I was two, and understand how the process works. Making adjustments takes less than five minutes. I was told I needed an appointment and technically they weren't even supposed to let me in the building. I recognize and am patient regarding Covid protocols, yet the employee's tone was extremely harsh and condescending. My dad doesn't like to go either as they treat him rudely. He is very hard of hearing. He thought they would be more professional with me because I'm younger. I will never come back here again! I will go to Westshore Eye Care in Holland, which is my regular provider. read more

I had an in person appointment. This is my 3rd time coming here. However the last time I was there the doctor never wrote the script correctly for my eyes. I have been waiting since 1/22/21 to hear back from the manager. They have not contacted me to fix the glasses. I would not suggest going here. You are better off going across the street to RX optical. read more

Last summer the old peepers finally became so obscured by cataracts, it was time to take action. So I took myself down to Grand Rapids Ophthalmology, got examined and was declared a candidate for double cataract removal surgery. I had several conversations with staff, including my doc, to determine the cost of the treatment since 2 surgeries had not been included in my 2016 budget. Fortunately, I had just become Medicare eligible and had good coinsurance. I was reassured that, if I opted for the single vision, (distance) lens implants - rather than the far more expensive multifocals - (although I would still require glasses for near vision) my only "out-of-pocket" would in all likelihood be $45.00 for the post-surgical refractory exam. The surgeries went pretty well. One anesthesiologist managed to give me a painful black eye when he needled a blood vessel, and the outcomes were - for the most part - good. I still get some light halos in one eye because I think the lens implant might be tiny bit askew. But the most painful part, however, was when I started to get the bills. You know - the ones I was not expecting. So I paid the first $262.76 bill. I thought that was quite a bit more than the $0.00 I had been anticipating, but I paid anyway. And I was glad to be done with it. Until I got the bill for $367.98. That made me a bit upset. I called the accounting department and told them I don't keep that kind of cash lying around and that my "$0 out-of-pocket" had now reached $630.74(!) Once I explained, they told me they would talk to the doc and see if they could make an adjustment; and then get back to me. They didn't. So - I called them back. I was informed the doctor told them he "doesn't negotiate fees". Like the U.S. government's policy of not negotiating with terrorists, I guess. Only in this case substitute the word "terrorist" with "patient". THEN - I got a separate bill from the guy who blacked my eye...oh... and Grand Rapids Ophthalmology sent me to a collection agency. Remember the crude old saying about something happening to you while you "never even got kissed"? That really applies to how I feel about my treatment by GR Ophthalmology. read more

I booked an appointment at the Walker location for March 15th which I understood to be a full eye exam. They had me read an eye chart, tested my retina, and then the optometrist looked at my eyes. She said they looked good so when I checked out I asked for my new script. I couldn't believe that the optometrist didn't write a new one since I had shown the optometrist the old one and it was expiring in a few days. I called the billing department and the woman there said I had asked for a "medical exam", which was a lie. I sent a registered letter to the VP of Marketing telling her how much I disliked the exam I had gotten, but she never responded. I can't believe they can't do more complete exams. Now I will have to go someplace else to have the rest of the exam. I am so upset that they don't seem to care about their patients. I am placing Grand Rapids Ophthalmology on the AARP nationwide fraud alert list so others are aware of their practices. I believe if this was to be a true medical exam I should have been referred to an ophthalmologist. read more

I normally don't like to give bad reviews but this company is exceptionally customer unfriendly. The staff is kind.. but the rules are ridiculous: you cannot enter without appointment, even if the store is empty. You may not try on glasses without a face mask, still. When you call for an appointment you get a commercial survey. There is no way to reach an employee. Everything is anti-customer, it seems. Had a medical release from wearing a mask. Brought it with me and showed them even though they are not suppose to ask for it. Still wouldn't see me for a routine eye exam. Even my dentist saw me, and they are up in my mouth and saliva. Ridiculous. At least this is better than when the pediatric specialist sat in the room, with my, then four year old daughter in the room, and told us to get use to her not being able to see out of her one one and that it wouldn't get any better. Saw a specialist in Chicago that had no problems getting miraculous improvement with just patching. Continuously disappointing service and lack of professionalism. read more

I recently visited the Grandville office of GR Ophthalmology due to a bump or growth on a lower eyelid. I was in the area, and decided to walk in without an appointment to see if I could get an upcoming appointment moved up. Instead, the receptionist offered me an appointment to see an Dr. Veldkamp for a checkup that day in less than an hour. I returned for the appointment, and received good care and left with a good plan as well as a prescription for treatment. I really appreciate the good care that I receive at GR Ophthalmology! read more

I hope this is the last time I need to come to gr opthalmalogy in grandville. While the staff are friendly, the system and waiting time is unreasonable and I've experienced a couple snafus in the few times I've been here. The first time I came here I waited at least 2 hrs, then the MA dilated my eyes and come to find out the doc wanted to see them not dilated first. So I had to come back a different day and wait forever to be seen. Today, I discovered that the appt I rescheduled was incorrectly entered into their system- the appt I canceled had been left and the new appt I made had been cancelled. So now they are fitting me in (thankfully)and I'm again waiting forever to be called back, already 1 hr 20 mins and still not seen by a doc. read more
