Bruising on my son arm from the physical assault from the teacher at GPS

I am filing a formal complaint against Granada Preparatory School located in Granada Hills, California, USA, due to persistent bullying by its students and physical assault on a 4 year old student by the staff while in the custody of the school. The bullying against my child, age 4 years old, started in November 2021 by another child within his Junior Kindergarten class and continued all the way until end of school year. Both my husband and I have had numerous in person meetings with his teachers, principles, and the head of school regarding the repeated bullying with no objective focused corrective actions taken or implemented after every incident was raised directly with the school. Despite repeated conversations, the school did not make any changes to further prevent the daily victimization against my son by the bully. GPS continued to allow the repeated bullying without any mediation or structural changes to protect my son. In addition, Carol Shibel, head of school, and Mary Gendler, preschool director, both physically abused and assaulted my 4 year old child to the point where he had significant bruising and pain on his upper arm and his shoulders (see photos). We have already filed a police report. However, instead of holding the teacher and the school accountable for her physical assault and battery against my child, they blamed my son for being an over active 4 year old child. No amount of over-activity from a kid should ever lead to restraining a child to the point of leaving significant bruising, pain and trauma. They catered to the family of the bully because the family is an active part in the affiliated church which is on the same campus as this IB school. Thus, that child was never held to the same code of conduct that other children were held to. This school does not follow its own code of conduct nor the principles of the International Baccalaureate World Schools. Granada Preparatory School failed to INITIATE and INVITE concerned persons (e.g., bullies, victims, and parents/guardians of both the bullies and the victims) to help plan and implement activities to mitigate further bullying including instructing all school staff to provide immediate intervention and proper supervision to prevent bullying incidents. Furthermore, Granada Preparatory School ADMINISTRATORS failed to act in accordance with the school's own policy and code of conduct against bullying. They repeatedly failed to initiate the following practical actions that should have supported their no-bullying policy. Those actions should have included scheduling active playground supervision and to make sure students are properly monitored in class, hallways, restrooms, the cafeteria, and areas identified in the school survey as "hot spots" for bullying. Our concerns were egregiously dismissed as "boys will be boys'. However, how is another child hitting my son on the head with a hard plastic toy shovel, or pushing him to the ground, or throwing sand in his face, and eyes acceptable? Where was the supervision? Where is the accountability? This school has a zero tolerance policy for bullying and yet this child was allowed to continue bullying and victimizing my child persistently over 6 months without any disciplinary actions or corrective measures taken. Ultimately, this school flagrantly demonstrated a complete lack of professionalism and has shown that it does not follow the IB core tenets of developing caring and culturally aware children to become active participants in their own learning. In addition, the school protects the very staff that physically harm and assault children by keeping them employed and in charge of students.

They do not care, (but they pretend to) All they care about is covering their own butts and pretending to follow policy. Bullying is inevitable and nothing will be done about it. Explains why teachers quit and they are so understaffed. They have zero control over the kids and will not work with parents when addressing serious, concerning issues. It's probably not 100% the school's fault, it's LAUSD for not giving them the staff and resources they need. Which in return is very dangerous for our children. Honestly, the only person that cares about the students genuinely.... the security at the front door. The most genuinely kind, and caring person to students, and their families. But if you don't want your child to be bullied and teachers to be disrespected on a daily basis in front of your child and nothing be done about it, keep looking because this is not it.

It was not very convenient to navigate the campus, specifically to get to the stadium. Unless we missed it, there is no parking lot close to the stadium itself. From the main parking lot I could see the light stanchions WAY off in the distance. At the time I was dealing with a foot injury, so not keen on walking too far to get to the entrance. I suggested to Dear Hubby that we drive the adjacent street to get as close to the game venue as possible. We were able to snag a spot on the side street. Much more convenient. Navigating around weeds, trash, and assorted other debris on the sidewalk, we made it to the entrance gate. My overall impression was that this school doesn't have a lot of spare funds for maintaining clean grounds / landscaping. I felt sad that the students are stuck with such a drab environment in which to spend much of their lives for four years. I can't speak to the actual quality of instruction and other services, but judging from the physical surroundings of the athletic stadium, it was not impressive. At other schools we visited during the season, they provided an announcer to highlight players' achievements during the course of the game. That didn't happen at Cleveland. They also didn't have a home cheer-leading squad for the junior varsity team. The Cleveland J.V. team on the field was very talented. As I recall, they wiped out our visiting team, handily. I also found it sad that they didn't get the support of the school from the spirit perspective, when the boys worked hard to do their part.

I remember when my oldest started as a freshman. He was nervous and trying to figure out where he fit in. He joined the dance team, got involved in theater, and eventually became president of several clubs. Watching him grow into a confident leader showed me how much this school was helping him develop as a person, not just as a student. My other two children were excited to attend after seeing his experience, and I've watched the same kind of growth happen with them. They all have different personalities and interests, but they've each learned to speak up for themselves and take ownership of their future. As a parent, that means everything. What makes VAAS special is the smaller environment and the relationships with teachers and staff. Students are known by name, and the teachers genuinely care. I've had teachers reach out not just about concerns, but to share progress and ideas for growth. It shows they're truly invested.
