Our experience at GPS has been wonderful. Both of our children attended the preschool program, and our family has been part of the GPS community for the past three years. The teachers (Mrs Irene, Ms Megan, Mrs Jennifer...), are exceptional--caring, patient, dedicated, and deeply committed to each child's growth and development. They foster a warm, nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported, and eager to learn each day. Our children have thrived here thanks to the incredible staff and the strong sense of community the school provides. We are incredibly grateful for the positive impact this preschool has had on our family and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a caring and high-quality early education experience. read more

My daughter attended the early childhood program for 2 years and she absolutely LOVED it! She had some of the best teachers. Even though she was in class with specific teachers, all of the teachers interacted with the kids during recess, lunch, and nap times. Miss Patty, Miss Mary, Miss Caryn, Miss Megan, Miss Irene, Miss Jennifer, and Miss Claudia were all so caring and loving to my little girl. They made going to school a happy experience for her. Even the office staff knew who all the kids were. Miss Giaconda knew every single child's name and was always happy to support and encourage them. read more

The school is a wonderful learning environment. The teachers truly care about their students. Small class sizes, engaged administration, and a thoughtful IB curriculum make this school an excellent choice. read more

Great teachers, they care about their kids and genuinely want them to learn. Very nice campus.

I usually don't write reviews but this was a terrible experience for our family. All they cared about was money. While they acted like they're invested in your child's development, they're really not. read more

First Impressions Are Everything: After reading a few of the select One-Star-Reviews, I can understand why. I called Today 7/29/2023, to get some information from the main office at the school. The receptionist was rude, condescending and extremely unprofessional. I was calling to get some initial information that the website did not provide, thinking I could get some insight on some of their programs. The receptionist, or whoever answers the phone when you dial "O", was so unprofessional and confrontational that I ended the call, and any thoughts of enrolling my daughter there. We are new to the area from Orange County. This was a slap-in-the-face. read more

I am filing a formal complaint against Granada Preparatory School located in Granada Hills, California, USA, due to persistent bullying by its students and physical assault on a 4 year old student by the staff while in the custody of the school. The bullying against my child, age 4 years old, started in November 2021 by another child within his Junior Kindergarten class and continued all the way until end of school year. Both my husband and I have had numerous in person meetings with his teachers, principles, and the head of school regarding the repeated bullying with no objective focused corrective actions taken or implemented after every incident was raised directly with the school. Despite repeated conversations, the school did not make any changes to further prevent the daily victimization against my son by the bully. GPS continued to allow the repeated bullying without any mediation or structural changes to protect my son. In addition, Carol Shibel, head of school, and Mary Gendler, preschool director, both physically abused and assaulted my 4 year old child to the point where he had significant bruising and pain on his upper arm and his shoulders (see photos). We have already filed a police report. However, instead of holding the teacher and the school accountable for her physical assault and battery against my child, they blamed my son for being an over active 4 year old child. No amount of over-activity from a kid should ever lead to restraining a child to the point of leaving significant bruising, pain and trauma. They catered to the family of the bully because the family is an active part in the affiliated church which is on the same campus as this IB school. Thus, that child was never held to the same code of conduct that other children were held to. This school does not follow its own code of conduct nor the principles of the International Baccalaureate World Schools. Granada Preparatory School failed to INITIATE and INVITE concerned persons (e.g., bullies, victims, and parents/guardians of both the bullies and the victims) to help plan and implement activities to mitigate further bullying including instructing all school staff to provide immediate intervention and proper supervision to prevent bullying incidents. Furthermore, Granada Preparatory School ADMINISTRATORS failed to act in accordance with the school's own policy and code of conduct against bullying. They repeatedly failed to initiate the following practical actions that should have supported their no-bullying policy. Those actions should have included scheduling active playground supervision and to make sure students are properly monitored in class, hallways, restrooms, the cafeteria, and areas identified in the school survey as "hot spots" for bullying. Our concerns were egregiously dismissed as "boys will be boys'. However, how is another child hitting my son on the head with a hard plastic toy shovel, or pushing him to the ground, or throwing sand in his face, and eyes acceptable? Where was the supervision? Where is the accountability? This school has a zero tolerance policy for bullying and yet this child was allowed to continue bullying and victimizing my child persistently over 6 months without any disciplinary actions or corrective measures taken. Ultimately, this school flagrantly demonstrated a complete lack of professionalism and has shown that it does not follow the IB core tenets of developing caring and culturally aware children to become active participants in their own learning. In addition, the school protects the very staff that physically harm and assault children by keeping them employed and in charge of students. read more

Been here for 3 school years and recently started the toddler program. Still five star due to the great staff and learning experiences.

I can't say enough good things about the preschool here. Having moved out of state and touring new schools, we're really appreciating how well GPS was a good fit for my eldest who attended from age 3 to age 4 (before we moved away(. Miss Mary, Miss Karen, miss Jennifer, Miss Patty and Miss Stephanie all contributed to my son growing in confidence and excelling here. They worked with his unique abilities - while also helping him improve in areas he wasn't strong in. I loved knowing exactly what he learned at school for the day and week. His teachers were super organized and there were plenty of all-school events for the family to participate in throughout the year. This is a highly organized, friendly and academically rigorous school and we loved being part of this special community. read more

Granada Preparatory School is by far one of the best schools I have seen. In my experience, I have seen teachers go above and beyond for their students' needs in the class room. There is a sense of community and camaraderie on this campus that is refreshing to see. We can see that the administration and staff truly care for the students' entire well- being. read more

amazing school, i recomend to enroll. it is really enteraining for the children while also teaching them. alot of group activities too.

My daughter has been at GPS for 2 years, and we have had a great experience so far. I plan to start my younger daughter in their Junior Kindergarten program next year as well. The school is small, which allows for a personalized and supportive approach in the classroom and helps the kids feel connected to the school and to each other. My daughter has a very favorable view of school and learning, and I credit that to GPS. It's a family environment where the staff get to know all the students, and the parents are friendly and involved. The IB curriculum is academically strong, world-minded, and the school offers a diverse range of subjects to the kids throughout the week. I wanted my daughter to be able to learn a second language while in elementary school, and the IB program gives her a chance to take Spanish classes. My daughter also has tech classes, art, and P.E. a few times a week with different teachers for each subject. I think it's wonderful to have so many different role models and teachers she can look up to and learn from. Communication from her teacher has been solid- we get weekly emails about what they are learning and what they did that week, in addition to a weekly school-wide newsletter. Teachers are very reachable and show care and support for the students. read more

Granada Preparatory School (GPS) is an amazing school. My 7 yr. old has been attending GPS for the past 3 years since Junior Kindergarten. GPS has an amazing campus, where my child has a sense of independence and belonging. The staff and educators create a nurturing and fun environment at this hidden gem of a school. GPS educators are efficient and devoted, they are able to truly individualize the educational agenda which is integrated to other subjects, like technology, music, art, or PE. Class size is small we have one teacher and one aide. We have in-class unit shares often, so us parents see what the children are learning. My son loves his teacher, friends, staff, and campus. Each child is greeted at the door by their first name here, staff really know your child. When parents speak about a sense of community this is the place to be at. The International Baccalaureate Program (IB) taught at GPS is a rich program, allowing my son to be an independent thinker, to learn by doing and to exhibit attributes of a well-rounded person. This also aligns with diversity, inclusion, and community. The school offers after school enrichment classes, like sports, art class, cheer, jiu jitsu, robotics and help with homework for us parents that work late. I am incredibly happy with the education and environment GPS offers my child. read more

I have had 2 children attend this school over 3 years and counting. The families and staff are loving , diverse and accepting. The extended child care is such a convenient affordable option. We have experienced nothing but love and respect from the current community of this school. When I came to write my review, I was sad to read the negative comment left over a year ago and feel compelled to respond. I actually witnessed the event mentioned. The staff was protecting this child and I don't believe they bruised him. The class room community and staff really loved him. I think about him often and hope he and his family are safe and well. I could write a novel about this but will respect the privacy of both families. However, the person leaving the review was not even there and included many false and harmful statements in that review. If you have questions about this I encourage you to have the staff put you in touch with parents from that class. Many of us still have children at the school and are happy to welcome new members into our community. The statement that the families who are church members get preferential treatment is also false. I do not believe that class had any church members, that is not the foundation of the community here but is an option if you want that (I have not felt pressured and was actually looking for a secular option when we first stated looking but loved the school so much upon touring it). I found this statement especially bothersome because celebrating diversity and various cultures is one of the best parts of this school. The last day is literally an international feast where we share food music and other aspects of one another and parents are often invited to share about their family's religion or customs. Most importantly I want to stress I always feel the children at GPS are safe. They take bullying very seriously and this was managed very throughly. 5 year olds are learning boundaries they don't hate, but the staff has always treated them with love and developmentally appropriate lessons of boundaries and respect. Thank you for reading. read more

My children have attended Granada Preparatory School/Chatsworth Hills Academy since preschool. GPS is the only preschool who utilizes the international baccalaureate curriculum in the SFV. We have been very happy with our experience. The classes are the perfect size for teachers to really know their students' personalities and learning styles. My children are challenged in class as well as in their specialty classes. They are growing to be confident learners and public speakers. Besides the academics, the school community feels like a family, which we love most of all - wherever my kids go, someone is always saying hello. read more

As a teacher myself, finding the perfect school was overwhelming and tough for my family. As a parent, you want the best for your child and that's exactly what you will receive at GPS. We're beyond thankful to have our son at GPS. The staff, teachers, students, and families are unmatched. The staff is well trained and informed in IB education, caring, and really devoted to their work. Students guide their own learning and the teachers and staff help keep students on track, leading them to grow and develop as students and human beings. So glad we are a part of this community. read more

Fantastic school! Teacher-student relationship based on true mutual respect to one another. Both of our children ( 3d grader and kindergartener) are happy and love to learn. We have been in 3 other schools before, due to moving and teacher problem- CHA is proved to be the best choice. Come and see for yourself! This is our second year at CHA, it is officially an IB world school now, both of my children are very happy. Every day they talk about what they did at school, quiet a nice surprise , especially from my 1st grader, who is naturally shy:) read more

As a part of the staff at this small private school situated on protected land, I can say that this school has a lot to offer. Offering from preschool (2 1/2 to 5) all the way up until 8th grade, this liberal arts college-preparatory school has it's share of education, sports, and character. CHA is a part of the National Association of Independent Schools, and as a result, you get small class sizes with more attention aimed at the student, as opposed to the class as a whole. The kids are all well behaved (for the most part) compared to public schools where violence is common. Through my eyes, the majority of kids display early levels of more advanced thinking processes. The EDC, or afterschool program(all ages), is great too with staff that truly care for the child's safety and at the same time exert a great amount of fun. The EDC staff members help with homework, play basketball, board games, or soccer with the kids, color pictures, and make sure they are behaving properly. Kids are supplied with snack oriented at a specific time each day. Extra after school programs are also available, including but not limited to: cooking, animal invasion, dance, drawing, and chess. If you're considering your child enrolling in this school, I highly recommend you look into it. The campus is beautiful and the people are great. read more

We are very lucky to have found GPS. Our two children (6,4) currently attend the school. The globally-minded IB curriculum creates a comprehensive foundation as well caters to the strengths of our children. The teachers, administrators and other school staff are very flexible, friendly and easy to work with. Our children enjoy going to school every day and take advantage of the after school programming including classes like lego robotics, art, jiu jitsu, rocket science, and dance. They are excited to share their daily routines. The small size of the classes ensures that they get a lot of attention. The teachers really know our children. The school promotes a wonderful community feel with other parents. We have become friends with many of the parents and we appreciate how engaged all of the families are. We highly recommend GPS to any family looking for an excellent education that also builds confidence, open-mindedness, and character. read more

So glad I chose this school! My son loves it! They are a very caring faculty from bottom to top. My boy is in JK and the lower school teachers are amazing, warm, and caring. We have 2 kids that have graduated from this school and have gone on to Sierra Canyon High School. Our third will be graduating in 2012. We are extremely happy with this school. It is a great setting, students are always friendly to each other and the teachers are great. There are many parents that are involved in helping the school, so it just shows how much everyone believes in their child's education and experience. After my daughter and son graduated and started high school, a couple of things proved to me that Chatsworth Hills Academy really prepared them well. Both of my kids took command of picking their classes, when they needed to make changes they did it all by themselves. They were responsible and confident. My daughter was even signing up for team sports. Basically, they were turning into adults that my wife and I could be very proud of. We know it was from the education and experiences that they had at CHA that made them prepared for the challenges of High School and so to be College. read more

My wife and I had done quite a bit of searching for elementary schools across the Valley (everything from the local public school to charter schools, to private) before coming to CHA. After a 1 year stint at Highland Hall (Waldorf) where our daughter attended kindergarten, we still weren't satisfied. All it took was one visit to the campus of CHA to know we had found the right fit. Not only is the campus amazingly beautiful and serene, the administration and kids themselves go out of their way to make you feel at home. I was somewhat surprised to see young children enthusiastically waving hello to the head of school on my first visit as I remember trying to avoid the administration as a child. Moreover, I was delighted to see that during a free play time on the sports court that it was so inclusive...there weren't any kids sitting off to the sides or any type of cliques. I'm sure it helps that the school size is so small...everyone really knows each other. Both of our children (grades 1 and pre K) are attending the school and LOVE it! We are looking forward to the next phase when the CHA campus will evolve with a new design that incorporates all the best elements of the surrounding environment while providing 21st century facilities for learning. I can't say enough about this school! read more

When we moved into Chatsworth, we searched extensively for a school that also had a pre-school program for our son. What initially sold us on Chatsworth Hills Academy was the beautiful campus, educational program, and the fact that all the teacher's children were attending. He is now entering 1st grade. We have not regretted that decision once in that time. In fact, the school has surpassed all expectations. The teachers are amazing. They adapt to the needs of each student to help them progress. What's more they all have a passion for it and it is noticeable. The school has a real sense of community among the students and amazingly even among the parents. I never felt like Chatsworth Hills Academy fostered a "keeping up with the Jones's" mentality. The focus is where it should be: On all of our children. I could go on and on but I think I'll finish by mentioning that CHA has become an IB school. I think the program is a game changer in education. https://vimeo.com/163167118 Don't take my word for it. My daughter is attending her 5th year at CHA. We have experienced lower school and middle school. We have been happy every year. The faculty are deeply connected to the students and families. Every teacher knows all the students. The one-on-one attention is a key piece to what makes CHA so outstanding. The setting and campus are beautiful. You don't ever feel like you are in a "stale" school environment. You are surrounded by large trees, lush greenery, a vegetable garden and farm animals. It is a treat to visit this campus. The children grow and mature into lovely citizens. As we near the end of our time at CHA we are so pleased to have made this choice years ago. The children gain admittance to the elite high schools in the valley and Los Angeles. Our daughter is prepared and ready due to the staff, curriculum and development that has been given to her. The new principal is warm and inviting. In a short time he has implemented positive changes. He is a great addition to continue to improve on such a great school. Children are happy at CHA. Chatsworth Hills Academy is the only Early Childhood through Middle School, independent private school, offering the world renown International Baccalaureate (IB) World School Program in the San Fernando Valley. IB is a highly regarded program with colleges & universities around the world, and students who are part of this program are seen as being highly prepared for the rigors of college work. Young IB students learn through project based methods and became caring, inquisitive, knowledgeable, open minded, risk taking, principled, balanced, reflective communicators and thinkers who will become future leaders in a global community. Beyond the wonderful academic program, is the beautiful 16 acre campus that provides a healthy, natural environment for students to grow and thrive. My daughter has been a CHA student for 8 years, since preschool and now in 5th grade, and I have always felt she is safe and happy at Chatsworth Hills Academy. The teachers are thoughtful and protective of all the students and the CHA PTSO helps create a wonderful feeling of community with a wide variety of fun-filled events and activities. Chatsworth Hills Academy offers financial aid for parents who need assistance but also want to provide the very best education and learning environment for their children, and who are willing to sacrifice to do so. Overall, I would recommend Chatsworth Hills Academy for any parent looking to provide a unique educational program for their children, along with a healthy, natural environment for them to flourish as young learners. read more

WOW! I was hesitant to start my 4 year old daughter at any school, since she is my 3rd child and only girl. I just wasn't ready to give up our time together. As a mom of 3 with children ranging from 10 down to 3, I have toured many schools over the years. Had kids in many different programs, and have seen and heard about all the options out there to choose from. I instantly fell in love with Chatsworth Hills Academy the moment I stepped foot on their beautiful campus. Then, when I heard about the International Baccalaureate program, small class sizes, and some of the stories about things classes from the previous year were doing, I knew I didn't need to look any further. Suddenly, my unwillingness to let my daughter leave my side melted away, and excitement took over about the gift we could give her by enrolling her at CHA. The plan was to enroll her 3 days a week, to get her started, but still give us our days together. Day 1, she went running into the classroom and couldn't wait to get started. I couldn't wait to pick her up and hear all about her day. At the end of the day, she came RUNNING to me with the BIGGEST SMILE I'VE ever seen on her face. She got in the car and told me "Mommy! I had the BEST DAY! I want to go EVERYDAY!'" She actually continued to tell us all night that she wanted to go everyday, and was insisting on it. So I contacted the school later that evening and enrolled her for 5 days a week. It was the best thing we could have done for her. The excitement has not stopped, and she is mad on the weekends that she can't go to school. In my wildest dreams, I couldn't have imagined a better school for her. The teachers, staff, administrators, and parents have built such a wonderful program, and community. I cannot imagine my daughter at any other school. So I am very thankful that she will be able to stay there until 8th grade... and my hope is that by the time she is in 8th grade, there will be a high school program available so she never has to leave! Thank you to everyone at CHA for making our family feel so welcome, and for providing such an exceptional program. I would give you 100 stars if it were possible! read more

I attended this school from 3rd grade until 6th grade, and looking back, it was not a good experience. Throughout my career as a student, there was one teacher who I always happened to be put with. One would think this was a good thing; however, this teacher was plagued with several personal problems and marital issues that she took out on her class. She would put me down frequently and fail to provide proper counseling and support as a teacher should. When my parents went to the administration about it, they made false promises and did nothing to improve the situation. Similar problems arose during middle school. The kids in my grade took on a "priviledged" attitude, mocking each other incessantly (which normally would be okay, since they're such little kids anyway--however, this was shocking, to say the least). When a "hate club" formed in our grade came to the administration's attention, they took no action. They seemed to expect situations to die down on their own, or wanted the kids to resolve it by themselves. I really have no idea what they were expecting. The teachers were average, not really taking particular interest in the kids, but, as mentioned above, there existed certain teachers which ruined the overall experience. All I can say is that I hope they've completely re-vamped their programs and their staff, because otherwise I could not dream of ever sending my kid to a worse place. If this isn't evidence enough, I created this account mainly to take a stand against this place. There are many other fine institutions in the area which would probably be better suited for your children, so take my advice and don't journey over to "the school at the top of the hill." read more

Our daughter has been attending CHA since 2002. It is our intention to keep her there until 8th grade. From her very first day she when she was so warmly welcomed, to today - the last day of 2nd grade before the summer begins - she has grown in every way. I attribute her development, her knowledge, and self-esteem in large part to the faculty of CHA. The school is in a beautiful, natural setting - lending itself especially to the study of science and art. All of the teachers and staff are devoted to the safety and growth of the students. CHA's summer camp is fabulous - and our daughter's looking forward to the summer she's old enough to become a counselor there! We highly recommend CHA. read more

My son has been a student at Chatsworth HIlls Academy since preschool. He is now graduating from middle school this year. I researched many schools before placing him at CHA and have no regrets. The class sizes have always been small and the teachers know how to teach to different learning styles and incorporate experiential learning in their curricula. The campus feels like an eternal summer camp versus a brick and mortar jail. The administrators run a tight ship but maintain a sense of humanity all the while. The arts are emphasized as well as all of the core subjects and I'm confident that my son has had the encouragement to develop his character and his intellect at this fine school. On many occasions, teachers, staff and administrators have demonstrated to me that they are keeping a close eye on my son's education and his well-being. The families at the school are very involved and give generously of their time to make special events memorable. Thank you, CHA! read more

The campus is a setting that is natural and relaxing, an opportunity to get away from the rush of the city and be able to focus on creative learning.
