Review Highlights - Grainery Bakery & Deli

There's a meat counter which is cheaper to get the meat there than most places like Metro etc, (literally halfprice for 300g of meat).. Well worth the visit and staff are lovely!

The positives: there's lots of variety of baked goods and desserts, almost to the point where you wonder if they are jack of all trades, master of none. I only had a sandwich, so I can't evaluate anything else. Seating is plentful if you choose to dine-in. I had a pressed sandwich with Portuguese cheese and salami. It tasted quite good. I also had a cappuccino which was fair. The negatives: First, while they weren't busy and there were two people working, it still took a very long time to get my coffee and then my sandwich. I also noticed their pricing is higher than other Portuguese bakeries because they charge for everything separately e.g. extra dollar for heating/pressing the sandwich. They also had a small and large sandwich option. I ordered the small sandwich, but asked for a different cheese because their cheese options were limited to two mild flavour ones and I wanted something with a stronger flavour. While they didn't tell me, I figured it would be more expensive. When they charged me for my meal, I was charged extra for the cheese and meat. I pointed out I had ordered a small sandwich, so I didn't understand why I was being charged extra on the meat, but apparently the person who made my sandwich had given me extra meat. Well, I didn't ask for that and it isn't my fault she gave me more. The cashier wasn't happy with my argument, even pointing out she had given me 4 slices of meat instead of 1 (as if to say I should be charged even more), but very grudgingly gave me a dollar off the bill. Anyway, my point is I know of other Portuguese bakeries nearby where you can get consistent fast, pleasant service with a good variety and quality of food and no nickle and diming. So I don't see myself coming back.

We wanted to do something that felt a bit more COVID-friendly for my sons's birthday, so we opted for cupcakes instead of cake. I hadn't planned much in advance, so I depended on buying whatever they had available. When I arrived they had: raspberry, lemon, vanilla, chocolate, red velvet and strawberry. We got all but strawberry and then brought it to the event. First, they looked terrific, but most importantly, the taste was great. The cake part of the cupcakes did their job, but icing is what defines and makes (or breaks) a good cupcake. If there was a downside, the icing is clearly such good quality and made from real cream as it started to melt as we had it outside (but shaded) for about 45 minutes before service. No fault on their end of course, and just speaks to the higher quality. They really nailed having it just sweet enough without being too sweet, and with all the intended flavours coming out and being the star. For example, the lemon was apparent and had to have been made with real lemon rather than entirely on an extract. I suspect the same about the raspberries - or at the very least they have a more natural mix for it as well. My wife said the red velvet was the best she'd ever had. We served about 10 people and everyone raved about them and many asked for the company info. You pay a little more than other places, but the value is worth it at the first bite. They also do other items such as macaroons, cookies and cakes. I'm not sure whether they have ready-made cakes as I didn't see any when I visited, but from their website they make some pretty gorgeous, IG-worthy ones. So probably order in advance for those.

The prices have gone up a bit, but definitely still very reasonable. Reminder that this is a cash only business. More than half the store space is devoted as a Portuguese goods grocery store, so the amount of baked goods is somewhat limited. But you know what, when the baked goods you do offer are selling at prices that would still be at a deal 20 years ago, you shoot up in ratings. Take a guess how much they charge for the fresh, jumbo-sized sugar donuts...50 cents! Think it's just cheap since it's a sugar donut? Well for the premium price of 75 cents you can get chocolate dipped, jelly-filled and others. Even apple turnovers and chocolate-filled croissants are just 75 cents too. There's a few other items and of course they're cranking out Portuguese buns like they're feeding the entire neighbourhood - which they might just be doing. And don't just think you're only getting inexpensive baked goods. Perhaps they may not be at the level of the highest "Boulangerie" downtown, but the quality is still fantastic. You are still getting quality alongside value. Honestly, the pricing doesn't even make sense, but bless all the staff and ownership of this place for doing what they do. Oh, and they're super-friendly too.

However, from what I got the pastries were defs A-OK. I came 30 minutes to close on a Wednesday and the two things I got were still in pretty good shape. The cake in the tiramisu is a little dense but the bottom sponge layer of cake is really moist. This is what made me enjoy it more. I wasn't too crazy about my first bite but eating more of the bottom layer made it better. The tarts were pretty friggin good in my opinion. I mean, I haven't had a ton of Portuguese tarts in my life, but I've had some. The custard in this was definitely bomb. Nice flavour. Nice texture. The pasty wasn't too hard or 'stale' tasting. It was a pretty darn good tart. Also, the custard was not overly burnt. I knew this place existed but never brought myself to actually explore it until my bf suggested it. Glad I did though! There aren't many bakeries that offer these kind of pastries in 'main Brampton'. I will return =)
