I visited Graeter's Ice Cream in Winnetka, IL, over both Memorial Day and Independence Day weekends and quickly realized it's a must-stop if you're in the area. The diversity of flavors is amazing--I especially loved the Buckeye Blitz and Coconut Chocolate, with Smores as a runner up. While the ice cream is outstanding, the experiences had downsides. Some of the younger people working there seemed unhappy to be there. On the customer side, uncontrolled kids, parents sharing a single cone, and people cutting in line--sometimes even around elderly patrons using walkers--made the visit a bit stressful. Despite these issues, I would return any day I'm in the area; the ice cream is worth it. For those unfamiliar, Graeter's is a regional chain, so there may be locations near you, and they also offer shipping. The shop has convenient off-street parking, which is a nice bonus. Overall, a top-notch ice cream experience tempered by some service and crowd frustrations. For this store, I ask that you put up ceremony velvet rope type of things across the entire bar past the checkout so people have to stay in line within a space and can't cut it. Maybe the parents will manage their kids this way (plenty of table space folks). Graeter's is trying to provide an upscale experience. The people need to act like they have some class. read more

Yum !I hadn't eaten Graeter's in over 10 years and wow is it good . This ice cream is so smooth and delicious. I could easily eat a pint in one sitting . Speaking of pints, you can pick up as many as you like . They also give generous samples of their delicious ice cream . The boys who served us were so sweet and it was nice going into such a beautiful ice cream shop . They also have gummies available for sale as well . I guess this is the only ice cream game in town besides going to the store? It's very crowded on a Saturday night in July.. the businesses hired a bunch of high school kids for summer jobs I guess and it's really not working for me. Nobody really has a designated job. They just kind of go down the line of people and ask him if they've been served it's very inefficient.. every single kid that was working there had a filthy filthy apron on. I got a turtle sundae and while it was fine it was just fascinating. Watching the gal fix it.. it was peak inefficiency and took about 10 minutes to make.. from mixing the chocolate with the nuts in a separate cup that got thrown away to using all her strength to squeeze the butterscotch out of a bottle while everybody around me got served ? whatever it was just fascinating. Pretty small serving for I don't know what I paid eight or nine dollars. It was "fine". Half melted (hot fudge). I will stick to the homer's ice cream that you can buy in the store.. lol. Made in Cinncinati Ohio, but DANG it's great ice cream using the French Pot ice creaming method to get ultra smooth and dense ice cream. Their black raspberry chocolate chip is bomb! I took my family to Graeter's in Winnetka, hoping to try something different from our usual spots, Homer's and Oberweis. Big mistake! The ice cream was awful--tasted like watered-down simple syrup with some artificial flavoring thrown in. It was honestly gross, and even my kids couldn't stand it. Total waste of calories! This has to be the best ice cream I have ever had, holy moly! I'm not even a huge dairy fan, and typically just the smell of dairy ice cream makes me gag, but this stuff is the good stuff! When your child has a medical issue (celiac or severe food allergies) going out can be TOUGH. We took a deep breath, prepping ourselves for the whole spiel on how to make sure the ice cream was safe. The moment we mentioned Celiac, the young woman behind the counter jumped into action. She went through the flavors that are definitely GF and said she would get a fresh tub and scoop from the back. Can I just tell you how relieved we were? Kudos to Graeter's. You've clearly trained your employees well! And I haven't even told you how creaming and amazing the ice cream was! I came across this brand by purchasing it at the local grocery store and realized that they had two locations in the north suburbs all along. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this location yet. We have come a handful of times since it is right across the way from a park, great location. The space is big and the staff is always friendly. Both were really good. We got them in a sugar cone but also asked for a cup as with littles I've learned its alway is better to have that cup handy. We popped in about 30 minutes before close on a summer evening. We had just missed one rush and just beat another. The employees seemed to be working well under the hefty stream of customers. The Double Dish (2 scoops) I had with a special cotton candy ice cream and double chocolate chip was quite tasty. The price wasn't so bad at $5.25 for 2 "scoops" (the bowl was very well filled). Tasty ice cream and the establishment has a fair amount of space / seating for the group we brought in to beat the summer humidity. I'd say that's a win! Their sundaes look quite tasty but also only what you'd expect topping wise - nothing crazy. Graeter's biggest differentiator is the texture of their fillings. First thing the assistant manager did when I walked in was yell at my family and I to stand behind the line. Not ask, but tell. Apparently this was only enforced with us, because employers talked to other customers who were NOT behind the line with no problem (see one example in pictures). No other customer was asked to stand behind the line. Family can not sit together, or stand by each other, if more than 4. They also kept yelling at a 3 and a half year old that he needs a mask. He's 3 and a half! They even messed up our order because they were so concerned about the child's mask to pay attention to the order. We ate our ice cream in the park. Ice cream is really good! As we were walking back to our car, we walked past the ice cream shop, and a family came out without ice cream and says "don't go in there, they're rude!" - I smiled and said "I agree". Since it was before lunch, they were nice enough to give me a kid-size scoop $3.75. Holy creamy cow! Rich...thick...caramelly...salty...with super big chocolate chunks. The ice cream was so thick it seemed like each spoonful had cookie dough mixed in. Wait, did it? Here's what bums me out about Graeter's. Shame on Graeter's Ice Cream in Winnetka. I used to love this place and frequent it with my family but today marked my last visit. We came with 10 people and ordered ice cream. (Spent $60) When 4 of the children - all under 7 - asked if they could have water because they were thirsty, we were told no - first by the three young women working the counter and then by the woman who seemed to be in charge. They have stacks of cups piled high but told us they have to count them and cannot give them out. "The managers would be upset." I politely let the staff know that if they cannot spare a cup of water for a child, we would not be returning. They shrugged their shoulder and did not seem to care. This is crazy. In the future we will take our business elsewhere, and I'd recommend the same for others. read more

First time to be here - I should say that I have to go here because of Yelp. I was one of the lucky ones to get a free ice cream scoop. So rather than go on a Friday, I chose to go on a Thursday, after I went to Church. It was almost an hour travel from Holy Name Cathedral to Winnetka. I chose Lakeshore Drive-Sheridan route, so I should say that I had a scenic route going to this place. Their store is on the corner, across the street from a park. I didnt find parking difficult, but maybe there will be some challenges in parking on a given occasion since its near a very nice park. The store was a bit busy when I came. Since I was really new to that place, I really have to check their flavors. How i wish that I should've brought my kids with me so we will have the chance to explore more flavors. I tried the Salted Caramel Chocolate Bits - and wow, i loved it! I even bought 2 pints of that same flavor so i can have the kids taste it too.
