Let me start by saying that I have been to Gracie's many times and have enjoyed the experience. Food, cocktails, service all good....but I have to say their New Year's Eve effort was disappointing. We don't go out on New Year's because the food is usually overpriced and the service poor, but when we saw Gracie's evening in Spain (my husband and I have been to Spain and loved the food there), we thought that Gracie's would pull it off with flying colors. Reservations for 9, were told that "waiting on many tables to leave so it would be awhile"...not what you want to hear at 9:00 with a $100 per person price tag before cocktails. Attempted unsuccessfully to get a drink at the bar, and were seated after about a twenty minute wait. Not that bad I guess. Except we sat at the table for another twenty minutes and were never approached by a waiter, waitress, busboy or hostess....not even to let us know someone would be with us. We had to go back to the hostess who seated us to let her know we had received no service. She apologized and someone came over with a mostly empty water pitcher to barely fill our glasses. Our drink order was taken and we discussed the five or seven course tasting menu (100 or 125) with wine pairings available for an additional 50-70 dollars per person.....really? The pours amounted to about a glass and a half of wine. We ordered our food because the bar was still working on our drinks. The first course came out before our cocktails did, and the timing of the whole thing was lacking... 40 minutes to get a drink...chalk it up to New Years Eve....however, I have to say, while the food was good, there was just about none of it. I appreciate a tasting menu and have had the good fortune to eat in many great restaurants around the world, but this was ridiculous.....plate with one shrimp and two mussels, the steak dish with three chewing gum slices of steak and three potato cubes....the couple next to us said "this is it?" I have never left the table of any restaurant who offered a tasting menu hungry, but here, I did....and for a hefty price tag. Service poor, bad timing, dirty glasses left on table unless we pushed them to the edge, waitress brought an empty bread basket to the table, turned around and came back with another one, letting us know they had run out of all but one kind of bread, did we want any? We took some, as we were starving! Finished our meager meal at about eleven....check dropped....my husband asked if we could order more drinks as we were staying until midnight....they were brought in a reasonable amount of time, but the waiter constantly returned to get the check...irritating. There was supposedly a traditional "seven grape and cava toast" at midnight.....however the Spanish tradition is twelve grapes, one for each month of the year! Don't know where seven came from...at least be authentic if you choose to do a cultural dinner. Also, the toast custom was never explained....there was just the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 countdown. As a side note, Gracie's advertised a midnight tapas buffet as part of the evening....as we were still pretty hungry, we waited to see if it materialized.....as of 12:30, it had not and we gave up. It certainly did not feel like an almost $400 dinner....more like four drinks and a few appetizers that we waited a long time to receive. The Spanish guitar music and flamenco dance were entertaining, but the rest of it did not even begin to approach the Spanish tapas experience. Just visited The Bouqueria tapas bar in NYC and paid $185 for five people with drinks, and left feeling stuffed! I love going to Gracie's as a rule, but this was such a let down on so many levels. Too much for too little. read more
