I am kind of picky. I have tried most of Asian hair salon that well known around Boston(You name it), but Grace Salon is the best. Grace knows hair and style no matter what type of hair you have. I passed interview three times during past three years after I did hair with Grace each time. I always tell her that I have a job interview. I think that good hair do make you feel confidence. I did a digital perm in one place before I have a job interview, but I failed with interview(digital perm came out very lousy and I didn't know what to do with my hair the morning that I had interview). After a month I had to go back to Grace to fix my hair for another interview. I passed interview and got a new job. Grace has a magic touch. I am going to stick with Grace from now on. Grace Salon is conveniently located in Union Square with lots of parking available. I've been going to this shop since before Grace owned it, and I would never have another salon. Binda, the aesthetician has been caring for my face for years. She gives an excellent invigorating facial and threads away unwanted facial and body hair. Her careful work has brought her a loyal following over the past 14 years. Mamatha is a colorist and stylist in the salon. She is the best for restorative hair treatments, especially hot oil massage and special conditioners. Grace's shop is clean, attractive, and gives excellent and timely service. I went to this salon because it's close by to where I live. I was very hopeful after reading some reviews but it didn't work out for me. I was seated in the stylist's chair for about 20 mins before the hairstylist came over. It was not the owner that I know of. I decided to read my book while I waited. I didn't receive a hello from the stylist when she came over and simply proceeded to place the sheet over my lap while I was reading. I could have gotten a heads up rather than covering my book. She asked what I wanted and I explained that I wanted layers since I have curly hair. Needless to say the layers were so spread out that it looked like I had a mini mullet because some pieces of hair we're very long and others were way too short. Maybe good for a hair cut but GRACE FRIED MY HAIR recently during a JAPANESE HAIR STRAIGHTENING process when she ran the chemicals through already process hair and left it in. Run the other way, I have to cut many, many inches off now. read more

EYEBROW THREADING REVIEW: I found Grace Salon on Yelp last minute on a Saturday hoping to get a walk-in eyebrow threading in. I've gotten this done before by many different people. Not only did they say 'sure-come on down and we'll fit you in!', but when I arrived I didn't even have to wait one minute! I'm a redhead with very sensitive skin that cannot take the waxing; it looks like I've been chemically burned after words. Even threading would cause seriously redness for at least a few hours after. Binda was not only a super sweet woman, but she got me. I don't get my eyebrows done all that often because my eyebrows are so light that they are not easily seen (and I'm kind of a tom-boy....). I usually a) get a stern talking to about how i need to go every 4 weeks or b) they make my eyebrows way too thin for my liking-and therefore almost invisible because they are so light. But Binda was nothing but smiles and she said before she started 'you like a fuller eyebrow-not very thin right?' She could just tell. She also said once she had finished 'ya know what? I'm not going to put any lotion on your eyebrows-this is what makes them red is the perfumes and other additives in the creams people put on. Put on what you know and like when you get home'. Guess what? My eyebrows were red for maybe an hour after i got home and just put some regular anti-bacterial ointment on them. What a wonderful experience compared to others I've tried in the city. She knows her stuff and is overly kind and calm....something about having someone really take their time w/ you in a salon that puts you at ease. She now has a new and very loyal customer for sure! read more

Encouraged by the positive reviews on Yelp, I have gone to Grace Salon twice in the past two months. The first time I wanted a manicure, and the second time an eyebrow threading. On both occasions, I was told that the person who provides those services was not in that day and to come back tomorrow. Very frustrating, and I ended up going to other salons in the area for service. Maybe my timing was bad, maybe I should have called ahead...either way, I will NOT be returning to Grace Salon! read more

i preface with the following: this is a waxing/threading only review. that said, i've been going here for years and keep coming back. when it was chez orize it was cheaper but as grace salon it is still well below market price for most services. binda and cindy both do great brows (binda usually goes a little thinner than cindy) and will stop and check that they aren't taking too much off if you are a new customer. when i've moved out of the area and not been in several months, they always remember me. when i've been neglecting my brows they kindly remind me that they look awful and i really need to stop waiting too long between waxes and then trying to "fix" the caterpillars myself. a word of caution, however ... they mean business when you go for a brazilian. this place is pretty no frills and they get you in and out quickly. they exhibit a certain level of professionalism and efficiency and so they expect the same of you--you won't be held after each wax strip and if you can't hang with the big girls you may be better suited to a schwank newbury street location. no one is going to bust out the tweezers and magnifying glass but in 20 minutes you will walk out of there smooth as a queue ball (if a tiny bit bruised). read more

I did my PhD in Cambridge, and discovering Grace's Salon was one of the greatest blessings of my time there. I've since moved abroad, but still I wouldn't trust anyone else with my hair. I have very thin, flat hair, and until I met Grace, getting a perm was always a kind of monumental gamble. I've gotten perms in Korea (where I wouldn't have expected my hair to be particularly exceptional) after which my hair remained rail-straight, and my hairdressers scolded me for not having let them know in advance that I have un-perm-able hair. This all changed when I met Grace four or five years ago. She looked at my hair and recommended a digital perm, and it came out beautifully. I was a little nervous about the price at first, but when you consider how much effort and how many hours go into one digital perm, it's more than fair. I'll also get into this later, but Grace also makes sure that the perm lasts forever - it's so worth it. Finally, Grace is really kind to her staff, and though I don't know the details, my impression is that, even beyond the tip you leave them, she gives them a lot of anything you pay her. Grace is really talented in a way that makes you appreciate a a good hairdresser isn't just someone who's been trained in technique and has the right tools, but someone who - like Grace - knows a lot of things by intuition from sheer experience. My perms last forever, without any actual damage to the hair follicles themselves, and I only need to get a new perm when my hair grows out. Every now and then when I'm away and have to get my hair trimmed elsewhere, the hairdressers look at my hair and marvel at the perm. Grace is accustomed to getting people like me, who just want nice hair but can't be bothered to do think too hard about what nice hair would look like on themselves, or to do much maintenance on it afterwards. And in choosing a style for you, she's extremely thoughtful about taking into consideration all sorts of factors, like how it might go with the shape of your face, your overall lifestyle, how often you're likely to come in for a trim, and what cuts are likely to stay trendy for longer. She's also the first hairdresser I've had who really went through the trouble to explain all her reasoning to me, personally demonstrating what I should do for minimal maintenance and making sure I had it right, and giving her opinion on the kind of haircut I should request *even if I go to a different hairdresser*. What I really appreciate is that she makes sure my digital perm will last as long as possible, so that I don't have to come in any more than once a year. A few days before I moved abroad, I made sure to come in and get a fresh perm with Grace, so that I'd be prepared for the long months and years ahead without her. I was recently in town for a conference, and it was a no-brainer that, even though I didn't have many days in town, I had to rush to Grace Salon for a trim and general advice. I got a hair cut and high lights at this place based on a friend's recommendation. What a mistake - I wish I never stepped my foot into this place. When I told Grace that I wanted my dark black hair to be a bit light looking, she immediately recommended that she can give me some high lights. I expressed my concern that it may damage my hair, she said "no worries, I will only give a little bit of high lights so it won't be damaged." It took the assistant lady and Grace herself to work on my highlights - they overtimed my hair and all the high lighted parts are half burnt and completely damaged. At this point, they literally look like shriveled up corn hair. It will probably take me years to get rid of them. Word cannot express how distressed I am. I am extremely upset at the result and also with her attitude - not wanting to take responsibility for her mistakes. read more

I came here for the first time yesterday and I have never been more pleased. I showed Grace what I wanted- it was a picture of Selena Gomez with wispy bangs- and she did EXACTLY that. I love Orize, have been to her many years now. It was her business originally. The new owners are a little stand off"ish" as they are just settling into the area. I cannot review their work or technique however I find the price reasonable, the service decent and the atmosphere hectic-most days you end up waiting. I have depended on Orize through many years, hairstyles, and events in my life and she has always come through. She knows how to suggest without being pushy and is always a professional. Grace Salon is heaven sent! Call ahead and book an appointment with Grace, you won't be disappointed. She'll take her time to carefully craft the look you want, with shears too, none of those dreaded razors that some salons like to speed by with! I showed up for a 5:30 appointment on a Friday with a photo of what I wanted and she pretty much nailed it, hehe. She'll try to sell some of her other services/products to you (like her digi perm for me) but no pressure though, you'll easily be able to walk away. She does have quite a thick accent so I had some trouble understanding her at times, but you'll work through it if you listen slowly. I also thought my cut was kind of too short at first, thought she cut a little too much than what I had asked for, but it's been about 3 weeks now and my cut is growing out beautifully now, that's how you know it was a really good cut! I paid $65 with tip for a cut, dry and style, which may be on the pricier side, but it was worth it. I've never had a stylist that's been able to properly cut bangs that suits my face best, but Grace has done it! A salon with an excellent artist like Grace in a busy city location with parking in the back-- I'm sold! This is my new go to salon!! read more

Grace does a good job with cutting hair, but her customer service skills are lacking. She does not honor the commitment she makes to people who call ahead a make appointments. Instead, she takes walk-ins with no appointments ahead of you if the walk-in is willing to pay for an expensive service. The first two times this happened to me, I was annoyed but I must be a glutton for punishment when I let this happen 6 times. The last straw was when Grace took my credit card and charged it without telling me how much the total bill was -- this is just plain wrong. Grace raised her prices and the total bill was more than it had been for the prior 6 times I was there (for the same exact cut and color). Grace lost me as a customer. read more
