I would definitely return without hesitation; I had a fantastic time! However, there are caveats. My review is based on being a parent on vacation with kids, looking for value, convenience, and relaxation. If I were younger, single, or without a kid, I might have a different opinion. If I were bringing my aging parents or had someone disabled in my party, I would be less kind. Your experience will vary depending on what you are looking for.
I will list the cons first:
**Cons:**
- Many of the elevators don't work. Super irritating, especially when you are on the higher floors. The one at the lobby stopped working, so we had to walk to a different area of the hotel to go up, and even then, only 50% of the elevators were working.
- Paper-thin walls. You will hear everything, especially annoying late-night doucebags deciding to party.
- Horrible dining reservation system (see dining portion below).
- Need more Jacuzzis!
- Drinks are atrociously watered down. I don't normally drink or care for it, so it didn't matter, but it would be a con if I was. For us non-drinkers, you can order the following; all can be made virgin: Cancun Special, Mango Tango, Pina Colada, Mangonada.
- Beach, pool, snackbar, & minibars close pretty early in my opinion. Did not matter to us but may be important to others.
**Pros:**
- Room layout is really nice.
- Amazing balcony with an ocean view.
- Excellent service all around, attentive and top-rate service, friendly and welcoming.
- Mostly quiet and peaceful, just what we were looking for. For lively and party environment, there's access to Royal Solaris next door, which has the "active" bigger pool and kids Miniclub and a small water park (4 years and above to leave; otherwise, need to be there with them). Both have access to each other's dining options.
- The beach is gorgeous and not crowded. Walking 1/2 mile either way from the hotel, this beach is the absolute best and most peaceful and serene. White sand and clear blue waters.
**Others:**
- Mexican-Moroccan architecture - the most charming exterior than all the nearby hotels. Felt like we were in a villa instead of a hotel, which is what we wanted. Lovely decor and charm. But it is an older hotel - I loved it but not for everyone. Definitely needs some TLC. If you are looking for fancy and modern, look elsewhere.
- Lots of kids - your opinion may vary depending on whether you want to vacation with mostly parents or a more adult-only environment.
- Ocean rocky and not swimmable - waters not able to swim in. Apparently, there's calmer waters 15 mins away. This didn't matter to us but would be a con if wanting to go into the ocean.
- Royal Solaris was the active party hotel with lots of kids, GR Caribe was the quiet peaceful one.
- The internet worked mostly - my T-Mobile has free limited international data so various times it shows connected to WiFi and other times to 5G.
- Did not get stopped for a timeshare anywhere. I guess it helps to be brown, with a kid, and not look put-together :D
**Dining options:**
**Breakfast:** Café Solaris - dingy Holiday Inn-style breakfast. Go to Las Fuentes instead; it is far superior.
**Lunch:** Pizza bar unreasonably slow. Waste your time waiting in line. Did not try sushi. Sit-down service and food at Bogavante was excellent. Shoutout to Carlos for being so great. Can also do the buffet at Rosmarinus.
**Dinner:** Las Fuentes (buffet), Marco Polo (reservation only), Bogavante (reservation only), Veneto (reservation only).
Now, this was the really frustrating part. The nice restaurants are all reservation only. It's near impossible to make a reservation due to the terrible system. If you have an active reservation (let's say 2 days from now at one of the restaurants) and you are looking for something earlier, you are not able to see what's available at any restaurants until you cancel the reservation at the later date. If you do cancel and find there is no reservation available, you would most likely lose the original reservation time at whatever restaurant you previously had! Unreal. With that said, we were able to eat at Marco Polo, and it was a good experience.
Other than that one night, we had to do the buffet for dinner all the other nights. The buffet changes daily based on themes. You can check the Royal Solaris lobby to see the weekly menu. They ranged from good (Spanish), decent (Asian), and atrocious (Parisian).
Desserts, I'm sure they make in one go, so you can tell as the days go on, it starts getting staler and staler; the same thing with the breads. By Saturday, most of the desserts and breads were inedible. The fresh orange juice earlier in the week starts tasting like tang by the end of the week! Another issue is that a lot of things do not have labels or are labeled incorrectly, so it's really difficult if you have dietary restrictions.
So yeah, that's the gist of it. I hope this review helps you on your search for the perfect Cancun getaway! read more
