Stopped in here for a quick bite and was pleasantly surprised- cute & cozy cafe, lots of baked treats on display & they have many drink options as well as salads, wraps and a variety of sandwiches. I got the Cuban Hero, which consists of roast pork & ham with Swiss cheese, pickles, mayo & mustard, and also an iced coffee. Altho the staff were friendly (there were only 2 young girls working at the time), the service was very slow & it wasn't even that busy. The sandwich looked small but was quite hefty filled with meats & perfectly melted cheese- it was really good, I wish I could have this every week. Aside from their sandwiches, wraps, salads, pastries, and more, the ice cream is delicious. On this particular visit, one of my dogs accompanied me as I wanted to treat him to a lil vanilla ice cream for winning at a dog show. What a great little find in the small village of cold spring harbor. We stopped here on a whim for lunch and had some great food and coffee. My wife and I split the shrimp and quinoa bowl, the chicken wrap, and two tacos. I know a lot of food, and we had plenty of leftovers, lol. The tacos were fire, some of the best basic shrimp tacos I've had in a while. The bowl was also very good and had a nice Chipotle mayo. The wrap was nice and fresh. We also got coffee and cookies for dessert. The chocolate chip cookies were awesome and a must try! Service was fast and friendly. I saw this place via social media. The lady is charming. We stopped in for a bite to eat and sat outside. I got the grill cheese sandwich and my friend got the crossant with turkey. I got the LAST ONE - of the Watermellon lemonade which was refreshing. "Pooh" -"think, think, think," on me as I just didnt think to ask to put it in two smaller cups so we could share. We of course bought - to go - dessert of a chocolate chip cookie and a rasberry square. The later at home that I nibbled on and it was fresh and delicious. All the items there are made fresh. A few times a week I drive through Cold Spring Harbor, have had dinner at Maiden Mist, but have never stopped for an afternoon coffee. Until today, I stopped at the Gourmet Whaler,. I tried a Latte, again I never drink latte's, so today I tried one, and the quality of the coffee, was incredible, great taste, texture, truly gourmet. I also had, a lemon square, and a coconut macaroon, I must say that lemon square was the most incredible lemon square that I have had!! I do not know if they bake in house or not. The coconut macaroon, was decadent, creamy, the coconut was outrageously great. Incredible service, friendly staff, very clean, hopefully have time to stop by more often. read more

I visit cold spring harbor twice every year. It's my mini get away from the hustle and bustle of New York City. And every time I visit I like to try new places to eat or have coffee in this neighborhood even though I have my favorite (Sweetie Pies on Main). Last time I visited, the Gourmet Whaler was working on modernizing the place a bit hence I decided to wait. This time I went (Monday 26th 2022 around the lunch) they looked very inviting so I decided to grab something from there - BIG MISTAKE. As soon as I enter I see a "Barista" working on a coffee while a Caucasian lad (I feel like I need to specify race here a bit for specificity of my feelings) is standing at another counter. Not sure where I am supposed to be so I just wait around for the person to finish her work and acknowledge my presence. Meanwhile a Caucasian man comes in looks around behind the counter looks at me and decides to leave. Now I am not going to assume he is someone who takes orders and question him about the menu for he could be anyone, not necessarily an employee who serves. So I wait again. As soon as he leaves a Caucasian female comes to the counter where the lad is standing and takes his order, lo and behold I find myself feeling stupid that there is a number stand by that counter and it also has a sign that says order here. So I grab a number and stand behind the lad. In the meantime two Caucasian females enter and stand behind me. Now the lad ahead of me has already placed an order and has paid, so my turn right? Wrong the lady decides to answer her personal cell phone instead. Remember the Caucasian guy who saw me before he is back and again sees me standing waiting around at the counter to place an order but decides to address the ladies behind me if they want to order and proceeds to direct them where I stood before. At this point I decide to not waste my money on such an establishment where color of a person is given preference. In conclusion if u are brown or belong to any other ethnic background I would suggest stay away from this place and spend your hard earned money where it and you are appreciated and welcomed!! read more

To be unbiased the breakfast sandwiches are very good... but thats where my niceness stops. To give the context: we walk through town all the time and stop in a few places, as most do, and got a coffee from a different place nearby. We then went into Gourmet Whaler to try a breakfast sandwich and they were trying to get us to pour our drink into one of their cups. We were hesitant and they ended up pouring it for us. Service was quick and courteous. However the Fish Taco with rave reviews was a huge disappointment. That taco deserves a 1.5 star for being a barely edible mess that could hardly be called taco. Looked up a brunch spot, found this spot on google maps. Told my wife about it and went for brunch. We ordered the Breakfast B.L.T, Egg Avocado Wrap, Chocolate chip scorn, pumpkin pie slice and to drink it was a coffee cappuccino and the iced honey vanilla latte, everything was scrumptious and very filling. The restaurant had so much to offer such as bakery goods, ice cream parlor, coffee shop, breakfast and lunch platters, the dine in area was spacious and very clean. Such a fun local spot! I came here for lunch with a friend. We shared the crazy tots (tots covered with bacon, ranch, and scallions) which were really good. I had the fish tacos which were perfect! Crispy fish with a light peach mango salsa and refreshing slaw on top. I also took a slice of the chocolate cream pie to go. A casual spot that is great for the whole family, especially kids! Salima review from September 2022. Same experience happened to me with Ms. Denice years ago. Caucasian males cut me in line when they realized she was ignoring me and she cashed them out. Then another and she cashed them out ignoring me. Back then it was a very small counter and I'm holding my fudge wondering if she wanted me to take it for free and leave not cashing me out. I was stunned by someone - owner at that- acting as if I wasn't there and waiting freely on at least 3 caucasian men that pushed me aside essentially. Ms. Denice had been fine prior so disappointing to say the least. But wasn't my imagination for certain. I'm only commenting since another person had same exact experience. Oh man I'm so glad that someone bought & rehabbed the Gourmet Whaler (granted, it's been a few years now). Such a great lunch spot. The fish tacos are as god as advertised, and the lobster roll is not too shabby. They have a bakery and coffee counter (though I prefer Sweetie Pies for that stuff, sorry guys). I like that they also have a kids menu, which is not always a given. During the summer you can eat on the sidewalk, and all year you can browse the tsotchkes for sale. Service can be spotty, but really only when busy. I mean, what do you want for a lunch joint, this ain't Gramercy Tavern! Visit the Whaler, you'll be glad you did. read more

We stopped in because we spent a good chunk of the day walking around Caumsett Park and thought dinner in Cold Spring Harbor might be nice. We wanted a place to sit but also something casual and this fit the bill nicely. Overall the food was good. I had the grilled cheese sandwich which was very tasty and hit the spot. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his philly cheese steak. Each came with a side of chips which were good but could have been better had they been house-made. We also ordered tater tots and my comment about them is similar... I would have liked them more if they didn't come from the frozen aisle of the market and had more seasoning. But overall we enjoyed it. Was the perfect atmosphere for what we were in the mood for, and it was a solid meal. We love the Gourmet Whaler! When we go out we almost always go with our yellow lab. Cold Spring Harbor is a common spot for us to visit especially in the warm weather and we almost always stop here for lunch or breakfast. The outdoor seating is perfect for us and our dog and they are more that accommodating even providing a water bowl for our furry family member. She even has an unofficial menu item, the "Kayla Burger" :) . Andrea and the other staff are always super friendly. We have had so many items on the menu that are truly great, from the quiche, salads, omelets, desserts and of course the fish tacos. If you are in the area its surely a great stop! Great breaded chicken sandwich. Terrible service. You order at the front then you find a table and they bring out your food. We ordered and went to the table but the table and chairs were covered in crumbs and stuff. My girlfriend went back the front to ask for them to wipe it down and they ignored her for a few minutes before they finally helped. Then they didn't bring our drinks until we asked and were already partway through our food. They didn't bring or ask if my girlfriend needed ketchup or anything for her burger. On the way out, we decided to get something from the bakery counter because, like I said, the chicken sandwich was really good. We stood at the counter for quite a few minutes with no one really acknowledging us. The guy was busy helping some people but there was no real system about who was next or what was happening. Cold Spring Harbor's place you always stop in for something. The original ownership had changed years back and added a lot to their menu.. It to me is still more of a coffee to go place, but has its lunch fans. They used to have some great flavored coffee (chocolate rasberry long gone) and the best french bread on Long Island... I kid you not. They would sell you buttered pieces of it, along with their homemade cookies when buying coffee. They still make great homemade cookies to go with your coffee. Ice cream in summer (not homemade but convenient) and chocolate candy on high chocolate holy days... ie: Valentines and Easter. lol read more
