They have also got a few things quite right: - The soup is super-hot, as it needs to be to cook the rare beef. - The beef is rare, so you can cook it to your taste (I like mine still pretty rare) - There was a reasonable amount of meat in the bowl - maybe not like eating at your typical Vietnamese family meal, but hey we're at a restaurant - The array of beef parts was all there - rare beef (rump or scotch fillet), beef brisket, beef tendon balls, beef tendons, beef tripe. Would probably prefer it if fatty beef was also there. - The bean sprouts and Vietnamese basil was fresh, sufficient, and are mainly budding (the buds are the most fragrant part of the herb) - The soup was quite full of taste. Personally I think Pho An's soup is slightly more to my taste (more herby), but I'm aware that there are two main styles of making beef stock. All in all, I'll go back. Usually you don't wait more than 15 minutes for a table. There are so many Indonesian restaurants in this area, that if waiting is an issue you can usually go to another restaurant if you wish. I go to this restaurant for the Javanese Fried Chicken called Ayam Bakar. Ask for the Breast piece (Dada Bakar) $6.50. I always eat this with a serving of Cah Kangkung $10 and a serving of white rice $2. Mix these flavours together for a true Indonesian dining experience. The chilli sauce provided at your table is very hot, so use sparingly. It can be mixed with sweet brown ketchup manis sauce. Another dish to try is the Nasi Goreng. It isn't the best fried rice I have eaten, but it is still tasty. Complimentary free water in a jug is available free of charge. There are many other different cold drinks available on the menu. My favourite is Jus Alpukat - this is avocado juice with sweetened condensed milk, and streaks of chocolate syrup down the sides of the glass. The food is your basic suburban Thai but well cooked, tasty and fast. We usually judge a thai place by its massaman and the massaman here is good. Well cooked and very tender with lots of flavour. The rest of the dishes we ordered were good too. The prices are very good. It was something like 20 bucks cheaper than the last place we tried for more food. Will this become our new local? After reading countless blog reviews, I was determined to try Mama's Buoi out! I must say it was quite a mission finding the restaurant, it is located on Devonshire Street in Surry Hills, so we assumed it would not be a long walk, but it actually took over an hour to get there from the CBD! But it was totally worth it - so happy to have found this gem! Mama's Buoi serves Vietnamese home-style dishes ranging from Vietnamese grills, hot pots, soups, summer rolls and salads. They also serve beers, cocktails and a range of T2 teas (the lemon and ginger flavour is soothing and delicious). From the menu, we ordered the Goi cuon rice paper rolls with prawn and pork ($8 for two rolls, cut in half), the Lemongrass pork/pork spring rolls vermicelli noodle salad bowl ($14), the Coconut tamarind curry ($14) and the BBQ chicken slaw (also $14). The rice paper rolls were yummy, but the nuoc mam dipping sauce on the side was the highlight! My sister had the coconut tamarind curry and she said it was very spicy, but had a wonderful flavour. The lemongrass pork vermicelli was almost perfect, but lacking sauce (ended up putting the rice paper rolls sauce on top!). Finally, the BBQ chicken slaw - succulent chicken with a fresh and and delicious slaw, accompanied by the most amazing rice crisps! All the dishes were fantastic and we all agreed that this was due to the fact that all the spices and herbs were perfectly balanced and everything tasted so fresh! As for the layout and décor, well it is very cool and modern. Loved the stand out giant mural at the back of the restaurant saying "Con co thuong me khong?" translating to "Do you love Mama?". The fit out is wonderfully bright, the menus are pretty and best of all, the kitchen is open, so you can watch the chefs do their thing (the smells are heavenly!).
