Burger was yummy, I ordered just the simple cheeseburger tasted like it was grilled outside on the grill

Got the bacon avocado burger on a vegan bun and housemade onion rings. When ordering, I told them that I was lactose intolerant, so the server swapped out a regular bun with a vegan one. I double checked with the onion rings, she mentioned how they were made in the same area/space as dairy products, but I thought that would still be alright so I ordered them. Waited a long time (15 min?) considering it was around 3pm and the restaurant only semi busy. When I actually got my meal, another server let me know that the onion ring batter actually contains dairy. As a result, I wasn't able to try them, and they were nice enough to let me chose between two sides that didn't contain dairy -- both salad-esque. From the people I ate with, it seemed that the onion rings were generally pretty average. The avocado bacon burger was pretty good, however the bacon was a bit different than the usually crispy American bacon I'm use to. Wish there could have been a bit more avocado as well. If it weren't for their 2-for-1 vouchers, I would have NEVER come here. Cambridge is pretty expensive generally, and this was by my department. Their burgers are ridiculously expensive, and I always leave hungry (and trust me, my appetite isn't that big). Most of my guy friends consider this a snack not a meal. The menu offerings are interesting. The falafel burger is tasty and the chicken burgers are mediocre. Nothing too great, though. I'd prefer a juicy American cheeseburger... Also the milkshakes are terrible. The chocolate shake was like drinking chocolate milk. It was watery and expensive. Then again, it's very difficult to find a perfect milkshake in England. The only place that does them correctly is Moo Moo's in Oxford. Oxford: 1. Cambridge: 0. But I digress. The worst part of this place is service. There's always a wait, because they're small. For European standards of customer service, this place was appalling... think about that for a moment. I came with a group of four. No tables were available. So we waited for a table that could seat 4 to open up. Two tables of two (side by side) became available, and they seated two couples that came 10-15 minutes AFTER us. When I asked the manager why we couldn't sit there, he said it was because those tables were meant for two people. Well yes, thank you intelligent man, I realize the tables seat two people... BUT THEY'RE RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER, so they're practically like a table for 4, and we've been WAITING for 30 minutes! Now I kept calm, of course. I continued to ask politely. After all, it was simply a misunderstanding, wasn't it? Nope. The manager and staff ignored us. My friends and I checked a few times because we couldn't understand their rudeness. They have really good burgers which I was definitely surprised by. The toppings are a little different but they are very good. I ordered the Camemburger with the hash brown on top. It turned out to be really good. A bit pricey a relatively good experience. Service and the set up are another issue. The lady taking my order I thought was about to break down and cry. She took orders, delivered drinks and food, and cleaned tables basically running the front end by herself. She definitely needed help. I am glad I came later in the afternoon as the lunch crowd had already come and gone and there were plenty of tables available. You pick a seat, order, and tell the person where you are sitting. The burgers, while nice, are nothing special. Certainly not worth the price tag. Even with a special offer and a student discount burger, fries and a drink was £12 a head and would have been £16 without offers. (The stack was the better of the burgers we had, the Bacon Cheeseburger lacked flavour) The chunky skin on fries are OK but the portion is quite small. The skinny fries are ridiculously skinny but you do get a fair number of them. The Fruity Fizz drinks (which do come with free refills, which is nice) are tasty indeed. While the staff were all nice, they seemed surprised any time customers wanted to interact with them. The space itself is cramped. Our table was so close to the door of the Disabled toilet, we'd have had to be moved to let someone in. The music was very loud making conversation somewhat difficult, although that may have been because it was Cambridge Big Weekend and they may have been trying to cover the noise from outside. Overall it's not something I'd recommend or visit regularly but I wouldn't turn my nose up at it if I ended up there again. read more

Great tasting burgers. Plenty of selection, even a Lamb burger. The skinny fries is a must! Ditto also the Kiwi Burger for those who love sweet and tangy taste with their burger. Food is five stars. But service is three stars. They have no clue which was the closest car park and kept complaining that they couldn't hear me despite having good reception, later loosing my reservation. But we came at 2100 so it wasn't really needed. Would come again though. read more

Came here with my partner a few days ago, the staff were very polite and helped a lot, we ordered the Don burger and the cheese and bacon burger, they were both delicious! Best burger around! These came with chips which were also amazing! Just the right amount of everything meant I left feeling that I got my money's worth! Ordered hallomi bites and they were also amazing, I had ordered them before so I knew how good they'd be! All that and two strawberry and elderflower bottomless fizz's came to £40 which was very reasonable for how delicious it all was! I would defiantly recommend GBK to everyone! read more

They are quite expensive, but you can get some good deals with the loyalty card and misc offers like two burgers for 10gbp. The food is actually pretty good. The BBQ burger I had was very good with a tasty sauce, but on the down side they are not accompanied by chips so you have to order them separately and the coke comes in small bottles. It's a small place (expect queues) with a nice view to the park at the back. Short review: good solid burgers, but a bit overpriced for the whole experience. read more

This is my first experience of GBK in Cambridge, probably my last also. I don't mind eating animals, I'm not a vegetarian by a long shot, but nor do I believe in cruelty, and at this restaurant the animal dies twice; Once when it's slaughtered to make the beef, and it's murdered when this restaurant gets hold of it! Unlike some of the other reviews, we only had to wait five minutes, but waiting patrons can either wait in waiting area (4 chairs at the bottom of the stairs) or hang around near the door (which clogs the entire area up), so I can imagine that coming on a busier day would have been a nightmare. All joking aside, I went there with a good friend of mine for a celebratory lunch, and had my 4 year old daughter was along for the ride. After hours of telling her we weren't going to go to McDonalds because the place we were going was going to be far better, imagine how much daddy looked like a liar when, actually, it was far below McDonalds standards, for about 5x the price. The meal was "OK" in many respects, but the burger, oh my, the burger, you'd think since the word is in their business title, and it's the most prevalent item on the menu, that they'd actually know how to cook one! That was probably mistake number one! My daughter is far from discerning when it comes to food, she'll eat pretty much anything that sits still for too long, and burgers are her very favourite food, so I assumed that this would be a hit, imagine my raised eyebrows when she took one bite, and then not another until I prompted her at the end of the meal, only to take one more bite and push the plate away (this is the 2nd time in my daughters life that I've ever seen her push food away). On my order and my daughters (I can't speak for the other guys I was with), they were overcooked and so very dry, I wasn't offered the option of having a medium cooked burger, I suspect they may not be allowed to, and have to cook them well done for health and safety, but it *is* possible to cook a burger until it well done, without making it well screwed too. I don't want to be totally unfair, the Oreo milkshake was really nice, the fries are good and crisp, my daughter totally demolished her milkshake, and fries. The food is well presented, the rest of the ingredients are fresh and tasty..... But ohhh my the burgers, those poor poor burgers. If you're a big fan of burgers (I've sought out some of the best burgers in the world on my travels) this is probably a place I wouldn't recommend. However, it's probably important to note that it's likely that the murdered burger is the victim of whoever cooked it, and your experience may vary with other restaurants in this chain (or when whoever cooked my burger has a day off!) read more

Love the burgers here, they are huge and the meat is really good quality. Also love the side orders of fat chips, you do get lovely burgers here and you don't feel like you've eaten something thats really bad for you, although its a lot of meat! If you like burgers you will love this place, like the chitter chatter of the place too, nice atmosphere and staff are friendly, probably due to the fact they dont have to wait at your table, only to bring your food to you! read more

GBK can get a little busy at the weekend as it does not have the largest seating area, however, the food is excellent. My all-time favourite is the Blue-Cheese Burger which washed down with some Steinlager and a side of chunky chips will reduce even grown men to gibbers of delight. A wide choice of burgers is available and don't feel restricted to just chips as a side as they have great salads too. Don't expect to spend all evening there, and it can get noisy, but for a quick bite where everyone pays for what they eat, it's a winner read more

There are plenty tempting veggie options and even salads gasp, but the big winner for me is the Greek Lamb burger. Service was exceptionally friendly and helpful. The name Gourmet Burger Kitchen is misleading. Although the meat was of good quality, the rest of the burger was not convincing. The patties were burnt, the top surface dried out and too much relish was used. This lead to an over powering taste of burnt bread and relish, while the avocado and bacon were flaw.
