We were more than happy to find out my company had arranged for us to stay in Chelsea during my short-term assignment in London but the one downside is there aren't a lot of good cheap eats unless you head down towards Gloucester Road. The prices at Byron seemed reasonable and we wanted to find out if these English folks can really make a "proper hamburger". Byron seems to pride itself on using high quality ingredients and it is apparent in their food. The buns were very good and the beef was tasty yet not too greasy/fatty. We also tried the french fries and coleslaw. The coleslaw is more peppery than creamy, which I prefer but my wife doesn't. The fries were not too oily -- cooked just right. I was a bit humored by the number of natives I saw eating their burgers with a fork and knife! In America, we eat our burgers with our hands! In conclusion, this American gives Byron his seal of approval. Not as good as some of the better burger places in America but for London, it's definitely worth checking out.

I'm not here to weigh in on this matter, but suffice is to say, they are similar. The difference, and a big one, is that at Byron you get table service. Moreover, there is often much more space in a Byron than their neighbors. Reasonably priced, locally sourced, and a healthy variety of options and it seems like Byron edges out GBK almost every time. It's not gourmet, but it'll do in a pinch!

They fought the tied pub co. and (unsurprisingly) the tied pub co. won. It was a decent enough boozer, with community outreach aspirations, generic beers, fairly unforgettable grub and a regular film night. The medics from the local hospital who occupied it were friendly enough as long as you didn't try and compete in the hardest quiz night in the area. When the previous management were finally (and brutally) removed, they stripped all of 'their' renovations out with them; fixtures, fittings, wall coverings and bar kit. Looking at the reopened bar, the new tenants have done a pretty good job of, well, leaving it in exactly the same condition. The decor and furniture takes stripped back shabby chic to a new level, this one barely one step up from squat party. As Camberwell is the new wherever achingly hip we're supposed to be, they've pitched it perfectly. The beer and wine choices are as pedestrian as before, but the menu has been given a spruce. Loosely defined as the kind of gutsy, hearty pub fare you've seen bothering a thousand kilner jars on a thousand wooden chopping boards before. A muted quinoa and roast vegetable salad was undoubtedly healthy, but as beige a dish in all senses of the word as you could find. As quiet as an unpopular 20 year old's house party and as instantly forgettable. The lack of oomph sadly extended to a woefully under-powered bavette steak, its normally rich and meaty tang entirely missing in action. It was such an under seasoned tasteless piece of meat that it was virtually eclipsed by its side of cold and over cooked chips, god knows what would have happened if it had come with anything as flavoursome as a Bearnaise... The thought is definitely there, burgers and sandwiches are perfectly acceptable and generally it's a fine looking classic pub menu, but it doesn't live up to the promise, which is a shame. That being said, it's a pub, not a restaurant, so if you're looking for a quick bite alongside a couple of drinks with friends then take advantage of their lovely beer garden, an excellent selection of tunes and remind yourself that it's who you're with that really matters.

I really, really dig this place…read more First of all, the mocha is stunning. They'll make it with soy if you ask. The ambiance is lovely as well. Like apartment listings, what some might call cramped I call cozy. There are potted flowers and lots of knickknacks all around. Even the bathroom is cute. And who can beat a door made from a phone booth? I like being able to see what's going on in the kitchen too - it feels hectic but fun. For food, I've tried the veggie burger, lamb burger, chicken burger (my fave), and chips (always extra-crispy), and seen table-mates get the falafel and the chicken salad. The veggie burger needs something to hold it together better; it kind of became a mess as I ate it, but a yummy mess at that. The burgers really are as big as your face, so if you get chips on the side, it's enough to be a meal for two. I've also had the breakfast fry up, which is definitely enough for two. It came with egg, sausage, bacon, beans, mushroom, tomato, and toast. So deliciously yummy, especially on a cold morning.

It mainly seems to serve up burgers and coffee and I believe they have plans to apply for an alcohol licence, which will inevitably be a added bonus to this small joint. The food is prepared in an open kitchen, meaning you can see, in close intimacy what's going on your plate. There aren't actually many places you can/want to sit down and eat in New Cross and any addition is a welcome. However saying that, it is tiny. So tiny that if there is more than 2 people queuing for a coffee you are standing in the main doorway. Due to the size and popularity, when I did venture in it was a battle and the place was simply heaving. The staff seemed really flustered and my simple coffee request took much longer than average expectations. Still saying that, I will be back. There's no comparison to it in the area and the simple menu looks like just what you need on a cosy night out with friends.

We checked in with the hostess for a table which was seat yourself outside. The downfall with sitting outside was, you would have to go inside to the bar to place your order. There's a number on each table that you have to tell the bartender when ordering. There seemed to be one bartender the time I was ordering which did take a while. The two other guest ended up ordering from someone else and was done before I even had a chance to order. I don't know if he was new or overwhelmed, but it was slow. It did take a while to received our food as well. People that ordered after me did get theirs way before us. Food, was ok. The flatbread was good but nothing major to rave about. The halibut I believe it was, that was quite nice. Served with a nice curry sauce. Chicken skewers, very dry and the halloumi was ok. Margarita was nice which was great. They didn't have the rose I wanted but was offered something else. Overall, service was ok. Ambiance was pretty chill outside. But the whole layout is quite nice. The restaurant is pretty big, with a spacious high-ceilinged ground floor room (I'd guess with at least 50 covers) and an even larger but more intimate dining area downstairs. Seating is a mixture of tables, banquettes. The decor features lots of black shiny tiles, particularly in the bathrooms (which also have black ceilings and floors), which makes them a bit gloomy, although atmospheric... But they were spotlessly clean. We dropped by for lunch. Stopping outside at 12 noon, we saw the brunch menu posted outside, and thought it offered us a reasonable range of options. As we were being shown to our table, we asked the member of staff at the entrance whether this menu was still available, and he told us it was. I have to say he was pretty cool and offhand with us; but more of that later. When the waitress arrived, the menus she gave us were for lunch (and cocktails), which had rather fewer options for me; I'm vegetarian but the only options available to me you were in fact all vegan. I asked about the breakfast menu and she said that had ceased being served at 11:30. We pointed out that the menu was still outside, and she said she would get it sorted. She was very pleasant and amenable. In the end, I ordered the Rainbow bowl salad, at £15.95. My friend ordered the similar duck salad, at £16.95 with us. I had a sparkling water £3.25 and my friend the first of two glasses of Pinot Grigio £9.95. The food arrived reasonably quickly, and the waitress was very pleasant. Afterwards, my friend had the gooseberry crème brûlée at £8.95 (and his second glass of Pinot Grigio) and I had the breakfast tea. With a donation to the Maggie's Cancer charity, and service charge at 12.5%, the total bill for lunch came to just over £78 (so, without the wine, about £55). The food was perfectly flavourful and there was a reasonable amount of it, but it was on the pricey side for a casual lunch. But that would not have mattered were it not for the service from other members of staff. As well as our frosty door manager, I went to the main counter to ask the manager and the bar waiter where it was. They said it was on the lower floor; when I asked the way they said "down the stairs", as if that were obvious and I was an idiot. I asked where the stairs were, and they pointed them out (on the other side of the restaurant, and behind a partition, from where we'd been seated). None of this was done with anything approaching a smile, which struck me as patronising and supercilious. When we left, another couple said goodbye to the doorman; without even looking up, or smiling, he mumbled a goodbye. So really, only our waitress was pleasant, and the three gentlemen didn't make us feel welcome at all. Perhaps, given my friend and I are 60+ and 80+, we simply weren't cool enough for them?

There are quite a few takeout places round here than cater for the folks who lunch, but then they close for the day, not considering the drinkers in the area who would prefer not to drink on an empty stomach.
