Popped in for a quick meal after exploring Windsor. It was easy to get a table around 1pm on a Thursday - you order at the bar and grab a table. I went for the classic fish and chips and the piece of fish was absolutely massive. Chips were perfectly crispy and soft on the inside. Came here for lunch because it was close to Windsor Castle and I was traveling with some older adults who needed a rest. I'm so glad we did! I had the fish and chips which was one of the best I've ever had! I was a little surprised because it was in a tourist zone. You order at the bar and they bring you your dish . The fish was large and perfectly crisp and beer battered. Just how I like it! The pub fries were huge, hot and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Looking for lunch around Windsor? Skip everything else in the area and make sure you eat here. This place has a lot of charm. Get a table on the 2nd floor and your in for a fine view of the castle. If you're bent on going to a pub, this place will set the standard. Bangers and mash was excellent. Three thick sausages over mash with peas and a thick gravy on the side. So tasty. I liked fish and chips too. Solid piece of haddock, slightly crispy and delicious with or without the tartar sauce. Steak fries on the side to finish it off. Friendly service and there's a good selection of ale and alcohol. Order everything at the bar downstairs and make your way up to a table on the 2nd floor. They'll bring the food to you. I haven't seen Prince Harry but I could imagine him having a pint here. This was one of my favorite places to eat for classic British food. read more

This pub is located right outside the walls of Windsor castle. I expected it to be more full than what it turned out to be. We found a table easily and there was no waiting around. Make sure you order at the bar, and they bring the food to your table. My companion and I both ordered the steak and Ale pies which tasted great. We also got Onion rings which were ok. Honestly they looked like Burger King onion rings, which is fine but feels a tad overpriced. Bottom line - if you are a tourist looking for a pub to eat at then this is your place. Wow, I was really impressed with this traditional British pub, just steps from the exit of Windsor Castle! They had about 10 different British beers on tap, including some ales you've probably not seen before. (They were certainly new to me, and I like beer.) If they have the Hobgloblin, definitely give it a try! The food was also delightfully surprising. I had a yorkshire pudding bowl filled with mashed potatoes and 2 full sausages, then filled up with gravy. It was stick-to-your-ribs yummy goodness. My brother got the chicken + mushroom pot pie (which also came with chips!). It looked delicious - The puff pastry crust was amazing. I hope I can come back someday - But Windsor Castle isn't something I'll do regularly though! :) read more

Having spent the morning wandering around Windsor Castle, a pint was deserved. As we left the castle, directly opposite, was The Horse and Groom. Seating outside, it was a nice day, we had to give it a try. Very friendly 'wench' serving at the bar of this 18th Century hostelry. Nice selection of real ales as well as the more obviously known lagers. Food on offer but we didn't try it but what we saw was wholesome and in plenty. Nice pub. read more

We only had 30 minutes to warm up and leave as our schedule got tight from all the special Windsor events in the area. We communicated that to our hostess and she assured us that we had time for a drink and food as well! So we commenced ordering and enjoyed the nice real fire she had going in the back room as well. What a nice place! Great theme, convenient, and apparently fast! We got our food fast with time to eat at a leisure pace. Got our drinks on and out the door in 30 minutes. Holy shit, is there where all the hot guys in the entire UK congregate? Yeah, I think so. I was on vacation with my parents and my ex boyfriend in Europe in Feb-Mar of 2009. We spent a day in Windsor, checked out the castle and I had this incessant need to stop here. Like, I HAD TO stop here. Mostly because it was this tiny little pub sandwiched between two newer shops and it looked like it had been there since the castle was built and I was drawn to that. First thing's first, the tables and chairs are tiny. MOUSE SIZE. These chairs must have been made for the paper thin and tiny only, because I can't imagine these chairs taking on any good amount of weight for very long. Either way, I'm not a big girl by any means, like at all, and the chairs were even small for me. It's dark and almost damp in there... It has this dreary atmosphere that brings you back, way back. Way back to the days where I'd be in my best bar wench costume with my tits hanging out, my hair disheveled and a couple of missing teeth. I feel like this is some old pub authenticity I was craving all my life. The beer was great. the vibe was what I wanted. I don't remember what we ate, but it was nothing delicious, that's for sure. They offer a mash plate of some sort, where it's just leftovers they reheat. I don't see that too often on menus, nor did I want to partake in it. We discovered that in the UK, an Irish Car Bomb is purely American, or so my ex found out. They gave him Guinness on tap with the top layer of it just being Bailey's Irish Cream... separated and all over the place. He drank it, but it was funny watching everyone else in the bar watch him drink it. Now for the important stuff. There were Aussies, Kiwis and Brit boys all in one bar. I don't know how they all ended up here, or why, but it was like the sausage fest I've always wanted. Then I realized I was with my parents and boyfriend of the time, and my dreams of being a bar whore partaking in a bukkake show shattered. After touring Windsor Castle, we asked a guardsman for his recommendation on where to go for a nice bite to eat. He (unofficially) recommended the Horse and Groom. We were worried about it being right next to the entrance/exit of the castle, but it turned out we had nothing to fear! The service was exceptional, and the food was delicious! It was too cramped up there for us so we headed back down the tiny stairs and only waited a few minutes for a table to open up. Ok beams and only a small area for seating make it extremely authentic and sure it's been the same for a long long time . Great chips and some interesting historical artifacts on the walls . We stopped in for a quick lunch after touring Windsor Castle. My husband had a pint and a sausage sandwich. I had a Strongbow cider and a bowl of potato leek soup. My soup was pretty bland but hot. The sandwich was underwhelming. That evening, we got on our flight returning home to Canada. By the time the "fasten seatbelt" sign was turned off, I was running for the bathroom. I was violently ill for the entire 10-hour flight. I can only conclude that the soup made me sick. I recommend giving the Horse and Groom a wide berth! read more

The cheeseburger was subpar and didn't leave any lasting impressions. The pasta was sweet but the cheese was hard and the fish was not anything spectacular. Stopped by around early evening for a bite to eat after seeing Windsor Castle. This review is strictly for the food, not the drinks. I got a shepard's pie which was the pie of the day. It was alright, nothing so stunning I'd want to rush back to get. There were boiled veggies that came with it that just made me kind of go "eh". Service was alright but it wasn't made clear if I paid up at the cashier or if the waiter would come give me the check. This is a pretty neutral review. Hope this is helpful in some way. read more

I went here on a Saturday night, picked it due to the positive reviews on yelp. 2 stars for ok service and ok interior. The barman was borderline rude when I ordered my first beer. The table I sat at was sticky with beer. I ordered fish & chips (11.95), and got a massive plate full chunky chips, large fish fillet, with sauce tartar. The friendly waiter got me ketchup & mayonnaise too. The big let down was the fish & chips though. The fish had no seasoning and I had a few fish bones too. The fries were undercooked and not crispy. Overall very disappointing, not going there again - especially given there are so many other nice pubs about. read more

Lovely. It's rather big and barnlike downstairs - they do a roaring traffic in pub lunches - but it feels nice and local and civilized. Great decor upstairs. Looks like bits from many old pubs that have been cobbled together, but it works. We got a table by the window, so we were looking out right at the castle, and had a couple of excellent pints. The Guinness is very fresh and they pour a proper pint. My Carlsburg was similarly crisp and fresh and cold. Very reasonable prices, too. I guess it's a tourist joint - this is Windsor, after all - but it's also just a very nice pub. read more

We sought this out because of it's location as we wanted to be close to Windsor Castle for the start of our tour/visit. This pub could not have been more fun. You literally saddle up to the bar to order (I won't post photos of myself in the saddle...sorry). My husband and I got fish and chips. When I asked about a beer to accompany the lunch, they let me taste different ones until I found my favorite. Need I say more? The steak and kidney pie is wonderful; served piping hot. In general, this is a great spot to relax and throw back a couple pints. The atmosphere is reminiscent of the days gone by where intimate afternoon conversation was once valued. Horse and Groom has been described by some as tourist trap, but don't be fooled as there is quite a bit of genuine country cooking in this establishment that has the locals coming back for more. As a pub, in terms of atmosphere, I'd rate it a four. But the food? I'm generous in giving it a two. The soup was extremely salty with a side is sandwich bread. In a country full of amazing artisan breads it was unacceptable. The sandwich was equally disappointing. Now the fish and chips? They looked good, but we'll never know. read more
