The biggest portions of fish n chips you will ever receive in your life. I'm not a huge fan of fish n chips, but you can argue this is the best bang for your buck anywhere around Windsor Castle all for £19.50. And they have fat fries here! Like super duper fat! So delicious! The inside of the restaurant feels ancient. I like the feel. There were plenty of people around us that were just enjoying beers and a snack. It probably took us 15 minutes to walk here from Windsor Castle. Order at the bar, and they will bring you your food. The burger was legit good too. read more

Our group enjoyed a delicious pub lunch here before Windsor Castle. We arrived at 1pm on a Monday. Sadly they only had 2 pieces of fish left so everyone else had to order something different. The fish was delicious for those who had it. I would go back but suggest they have more fish available. read more

We came on a Saturday night, but luckily stopped by around 4pm to put our name down on a reservation. This place gets busy! They've got a great selection of beers on tap (try a Taster Tray if you can't decide) plus ciders, and the food is friggin' amazing!! I had the Crispy Belly of Pork. OMG! Talk about a proper British send off (it was our last night in the UK!). The Pork Belly was thick and there were several slices/chunks. Crispy outside, tender inside and a nice layer of fat, if you love that, and I do. The skin was crunchy and they even served a side of crisped-up skin (cracklings), kind of like thick crunchy potato chips. On the plate is also potatoes au gratin, which might be the most tender version I've ever tasted. Perfectly cooked potato slices, lovely smattering of cream sauce between the layers, and a nice crispy top and sides. Total balance of all things potato-loveliness. Absolute perfection. And then on the other side were several slices of braised cabbage. Not limp and tasteless like it so often is. No, this was perfectly braised with a little smokiness, and just the right amount of butter (or was it pork drippings??) I don't know and I don't care. Last, there was a port and pork gravy dipping sauce. My partner even dipped his French fries into that gravy. That there is some good gravy! Is your mouth watering yet? Himself had the Fish & Chips. He liked it a lot. It was good. But let's be honest, fried fish versus Pork Belly. Is there really a contest? (It does come with killer mushy peas! So there's that.) I hope you saved room for dessert. There were several good options, but my inner chocolate-goddess needed to be appeased. And it was my birthday. So it was the Salted Caramel Chocolate Tart with Bourbon Vanilla ice cream for me. The tart was truly exceptional. A chocolate cookie pastry with a very dense chocolate filling (like fudge) and then a salted caramel layer, also the consistency of fudge. The bourbon vanilla ice cream (two scoops plus fresh berries) was the perfect accompaniment. My favorite added touch was the cookie crumble served alongside. The annoying thing about this place was that they didn't take cash, but then again that turned out to be the case for quite a few places. However, other than that annoyance (which is quite an annoyance since I don't have an English bank account) the pub wasn't too bad. It seemed rather popular, especially when I was there, which was shortly after it opened. They had some good beers, but then again not being a native Brit I can't really tell what are typical beers, and what are good beers. Still, I liked this place. read more

When we barely missed our train after visiting Windsor Castle, we tried eating at the Golden Oak but their kitchen had just closed. (I think it was because it was too hot and they "gave the lads a night off.") The Golden Oaks folks recommended The George across the river so there we went. We sat on the patio, which was nicely decorated with flowers. Flower pots - hanging and not were everywhere. The kids shared a half portion of fish and chips. The husband thought his chicken burger was only okay. I had the steak and ale pie. (Unfortunately the chicken leek one on the menu outside was not on the menu inside.) While the steak and ale pie looked great and looked like a pie (unlike another I had this trip), the flavor in the sauce wasn't really there. It was full of steak though. The toffee pudding was excellent and came with vanilla ice cream. We had sticky toffee pudding three times in our weeklong trip to London and this tied with Poppies for best of the bunch. The George was okay but in the future - note to self - check out Golden Oak. And then come here afterwards for dessert. read more

The George Inn was the PERFECT, quintessentially British pub in which to spend my final night of my European adventure. The staff was kindly accommodating of my very late check in (I arrived at 11 pm and they greeted me like an old friend). The room was cute and quaint - a perfect size for a solo traveler. It came equipped with a flatscreen TV, a closet, rotating fan and nice streetside window view. They even provided a teapot with teabags and biscuits. The pub downstairs was a fantastic setting for a quick cider before bed (tall pour, friendly staff, comfy seating), as well as a lovely way to start the following morning. My included breakfast really sealed the deal: I got the full English and a pot of tea, and everything was delicious. Finally, there is NO beating the location of this stellar inn - right on the Thames, a few minutes walk from the Castle, Alexandria Gardens and Jubilee Foutain. What more do you need? This is a true English pub just across the Eton bridge from Windsor. A great beer garden as well. Very dog friendly. Good pub grub and friendly service. Occasional events like Trivia, etc. Definitely a local and a place I would take out of town guests. I've heard the Sunday brunch is good but I have not yet tried it. read more

We had a nice lunch and a pint here. After a short train ride in from Marylebone we grabbed a bite to eat. We later found out we were losing time to tour the castle but at the time we enjoyed ourselves. We walked around and looked at the posted menus and chose the George Inn by the looks of the place and the menu. It was a good choice. We both ordered sandwiches that we shared with each other. We ordered the sirloin steak sandwich and a chorizo and mozzarella melt sandwich. Both were served with chips or fries depending on where you are from. They were both good and we cleaned our plates. L8-L10 ($12-$15) per sandwich is pricey with what we pay in the states but common for what we found at most places during our time in England. It was nice to just hang out and enjoy a pint before we toured the castle. The staff was friendly and we enjoyed ourselves. I would rather eat here than on the other side of the bridge near the castle where it is more crowded and a lot more touristy. Glad we tried it out. read more

We, a group of 8 particulars, could not have had a better experience staying here. Seriously. The rooms are lovely and clean, the pub downstairs is super fun, and the staff - Jeff especially - has gone above and beyond to make us feel at home. I honestly could not recommend this place more. The only drawback, which I think is an inevitability, is that is IS right on the street, so can be a little loud at night if you're sensitive to that sort of thing- BUT it also depends on where your room is. Either way, amazing amazing experience and will definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to stay in this adorable little town. Five stars all around read more

The food here is spectacular. We've been in the country for five months and this is definitely the best pub food we've had. It's very simple stuff. I had steak and ale pie and my husband had sausage and mash. But the crust on the pie was perfectly crisp throughout, the steak was so tender it was flaking apart, the mashed potatoes were not too creamy or too lumpy and the gravy was deliciously rich. I don't even like gravy and I pit it on everything. My husband's sausage and mash came with what we described as caramelized onions, but it seemed like maybe they had been pickled first? They were intensely flavorful. Even the desserts were great, which is a rarity. The sticky toffee pudding and bramley apple crumble were both excellent--with cream becayse they come out HOT. I also had the Conqueror Black IPA. Black IPAs are my favorite and so rare that I always get them whenever I see them. This one was intensely malty and complex. I really wanted a second one, but I was too full to even consider anything else. The service was also quite competent. If you're visiting Windsor Castle, pop across the bridge into Eton for lunch and skip all the crap fish and chips and sandwich chains. You won't regret it. read more

just about always possible to get a seat out side- which for the windsor/eton area is a bit special. suggest you join the 'windsor pub co' loyalty card if you are going to go to this place regularly- as each month they do 3 or 4 different dishes at about half price for card holders- valid 7 days a week. After despairingly wandering around Windsor unable to find a pub or lunch spot that didn't look horribly touristy and as we were about to jump on the train back to London for lunch, we spied the George across the bridge.
