What a great place for breakfast and lunch! Hugh's been doing this a long time and he knows how to fix my bacon and egg sandwich.

Food is terrific. Service is on a first name basis. It's 'old school' lunch counter. Chicken salad club on wheat - yum.

Everyone knew everyone and they were welcoming. Young lady cooking kept the griddle full Ordered coffee and a Big 3 egg omelet with hash browns. The omelet has bacon, sausage, tomato, onions and peppers. It was a hearty breakfast and the portion size was just enough to join the clean plate club. One thing to know is bring cash. No cards accepted. They didn't give me a hard time. They pointed me to the "service station" a block up the road to the nearest ATM and they save my coffee and breakfast for when I returned. The menu offers the classic breakfast staples, but the food itself lacked flavor and was fairly ordinary. Nothing was poorly cooked, but there wasn't anything that stood out or made me want to come back. The service was also just okay--it wasn't particularly attentive. One of the biggest frustrations was discovering that the restaurant is cash only. There was no obvious notice when you entered, and didn't realize it until it was time to pay, when I noticed a small sign near the cash register. In today's world, where most restaurants accept cards or mobile payments, it would be helpful if this policy were posted more prominently at the entrance or mentioned before ordering. Overall, I can understand why it's a familiar spot for many locals, but based on my experience, it didn't offer anything that set it apart from an average breakfast diner. I left feeling disappointed, especially considering all of the recommendations.

The inside is very clean and countryfied in their decor, and the people who work here are very friendly and positive people. When you go there and are seated, you feel like you're a regular. It's hard to choose from the menu, because it's huge. The last time I went, I brought my grandson and we both decided right off that we will have breakfast. We are huge breakfast lovers. We chose what we wanted and ordered, our drinks came out and the food followed fast. Everything was perfect. They have some of the absolute best pancakes ever. I should've ordered the short stack (two pancakes) but I ended up ordering the large one by mistake. No worries, it was still fabulous. Lots of pecans and the fluffiest pancakes I've ever had. Grandson ordered the meat lovers omelette and said it was the best one he's ever had. There was an almost unbelievable amount of meat in that omelette. I took a small bite and it was very good. We've had other things in the past, their eggs Benedict are superior as well as their hash browns. Before you go, do not neglect the dessert cabinet by the register. They make a fabulous rainbow cake.

A must stop for both dinner and Southern breakfast enthusiasts…read more On my way home from Charlotte, I used Yelp to find me a classic diner to start my day off right. I choose the Crack of Dawn Diner in Concord. I am so glad I did. Crack of Dawn Diner is the real thing--a local Concord breakfast-and-lunch spot serving traditional Southern fare at reasonable prices. The menu caters to local tastes, the dining room is filled with regulars, and the atmosphere is comfortable rather than trendy. Parking is somewhat limited. The private lot surrounding the restaurant was fully used so I parked in the lot next door that had signs that said private property, but it looked like other patrons were parking there also so I took the chance. As it turns out, it was safe to park there. The entrance is very welcoming, as well as the staff. Amanda was my very efficient and nice waitress. There is great teamwork here, and Amanda was well supported by, I believe, the owner who ran my food out and talked a bit with me. The menu is fascinating. A distinctly North Carolina menu. Several things jumped out: * Breakfast special for $6.59 weekdays * Breakfast plates mostly under $12 * Grits included as a side option * Livermush available * City ham and country ham both offered * Pork chops available for breakfast I ordered the country-fried steak with white gravy (essentially chicken-fried steak), along with two sunny-side-up eggs, perfectly prepared grits, a large buttermilk biscuit, and a delicious diner coffee. The restaurant occupies a stand-alone building with a warm, "come on in and rest a spell" atmosphere. Inside, you'll find counter seating, an open kitchen, and tables throughout the dining room. I chose a seat by the window overlooking the parking area. This was a great breakfast, that was reasonably priced, in a great atmosphere, with very nice people. It stuck to both my mind and ribs all day long. After breakfast, I continued on to downtown Concord and spent some time exploring one of North Carolina's most charming revitalized downtown districts. The breakfast was the perfect start to the morning. Crack of Dawn Diner has earned a spot on my repeat list whenever my travels take me through the Charlotte-Concord area.

I also ordered a side of green beans, they were also straight from the can. I also received a sweet tea, which was good but also how do you mess that up? And the kicker, $18 for that... should have stayed home. I was really hopeful for this place but after trying it twice and it was just as bland, I unfortunately will not be back.

But you will be rewarded with a great meal and if you're lucky, a slice of pie too. Patience starts in the parking lot. Their lot is small, and the surrounding businesses have towing signs, so you might have to wait on a spot to open up. Luckily, we just had to circle the block once, and were graciously rewarded with a parking spot. You go inside and see yourself, even if the table hasn't been cleared yet of items from the previous patrons. It's a mix of booths and tables with chairs. We were promptly greeted by a waitress, and she cleaned the tables and took our drink orders. My table got a Charley burger (which just means the patty is larger than the regular ones), two hot dogs, and chicken tenders. The Charley burger was great. I didn't sample the hotdog, but I heard no complaints. That chicken tenders were cooked through, and deliciously crisp. After I finished my whole meal, I thought they had sweet potato pie on the menu, but unfortunately, I did not have room. When we went up to pay, I could see the pie sitting behind the checkout counter, and knew that I should have saved room.
