People need to chill lol. I don't get the hate. I went in. No one was rude to me, smoking, etc. It was very organized and clean. Prices on multiple items were super cheap. Nice plates for $1, a book for $1, a painting brand new in the box for $7, a nice pot for $2. I will say the clothing is ridiculously overpriced and not in good condition. $8 for a shirt at Goodwill is crazy, especially when they are putting Goodfellow on the shelf right next to Uniqlo. And why prices the same as blazers? That would be a decent price for a blazer, I almost got one but then it had a HUGE coffee stain on it AND food still crusted on the collar. Don't come for the clothes but they have a nice selection and good deals on other stuff. read more

My wife went to Goodwill and bought a bunch of stuff without telling me. I took most of it back to return or donate because we didn't need it. At the store, they said the refund would go back to the credit card but that was a lie. Turns out they gave us store credit instead. They didn't mention that part until I checked the credit card statement myself and realized the money never got refunded. Total bait and switch. read more

I can only speak to the donation aspect of this location, as I have never gone inside. The worst part about this location is the cramped parking lot you are forced to manuever to get to the rear donation area. That is the reason I have never gone inside. This location has changed their hours in the past year. They previously opened at 10am, now it is noon for donations. I've also seen other reviews state that they close their donation area earlier at 4pm instead of 6 or 7pm as stated on the website. The people working the donation area have always been courteous and pleasant to deal with although people line up to throw their trash at them. Thrifting is subjective. Everyone wants different things... some clothes, some electronics, some books... Some don't mind digging. Others expect neatness. Price is also pretty subjective. That said, I thought their prices were kind of high. I didn't find anything this trip, and it probably wouldn't be a frequent stop if I lived nearby. read more

I was greeted happily because I made it there in time to purchase them before they were gone! I have no idea what everyone's problem is with the star ratings, but I loved my experience here. It was nice a change to see the place had plenty of space and lots of room to maneuver compared to some of the other locations I frequent. My main venture was to find sweaters and boots for the upcoming cold months. I didn't just find what I want; I bought this Goodwill out! I spent over $100 on many items that still had original tags on them including 4 Calvin Klein sweaters. Most items that I went through for consideration for my wardrobe were very well kept and not worn out. Bearing in mind this area is very affluent, and affluent folks don't wear their items too many before discarding them for the next best thing - this works in our favor. You're going to find some really good buys. You just have to know where to look. I like that this store is extremely organized. Things are arranged very neatly. Sometimes when shopping over a weekend I find it to be a mad house due to all the customers who have come through and have left the aisles like a war zone. This was so not the case here. Customer service was on point. I did have a couple of questions in regards to a garment and the associate was able to help me with no problem. If I did have any problems with him at all; it was primarily him trying to talk so leisurely with me and prolonging it instead of letting me get back to my shopping. Better to have a friendly associate than a disgruntled one. When I am in the area, instead of beelining for Plato's Closet, I am going to come here. I am better off. Not a bad Goodwill at all, although not my favorite. This is probably among the best Goodwill locations in terms of having a large furniture selection. However, the prices for furniture at Goodwill are pretty crazy for me. They charge $25 for one of those cheap mdf of particle board tv stands. The clothing selection is just okay. For smaller sizes the selection is quite limited. The pant selection for women didn't look so great, but there were a number of full suits and blazers for mid size and up. There seemed to be a decent suit selection for men as well. Housewares was actually very good, among the best in the area, surprisingly. There were some very nice like new plate and bowl sets. A good number of them were very stylish and modern, too. There were also some cool appliances, such as an ice cream maker, in addition to loads of Foreman grills and maybe a crock pot or two. The movie selection was full of cheese. The books appeared to be separated so that the cheesy drugstore books were separate from the others. I don't know if it was intentional or not, but I was thankful that it turned out that way. There was an ok selection of other more serious books, but nothing that caught my eye--nothing particularly new, no language books, only a handful of crappy cookbooks, etc. In short, I'd come here primarily for items related to the home, whether furniture of kitchen supplies. If you come for that, you won't be disappointed. Don't expect awesome furniture though, just ok and lots of it for such a small location. read more

Now, I won't say I am outright cheap. But I do know the value of a dollar and what I want to pay for something. Hence, I am always a happy lady when I have a good thrifting experience. I love the thrill of the hunt and in fact, I scored my Mom a gorgeous Pier One Imports antique whitewash table set for just a pence right before last Christmas! All I needed to do wash it down, put a nice coat of gloss on it and it shined like brand new. This location can always be hit or miss. I generally go in knowing what areas I want to focus on or any items I may want to create into gifts for my friends. But I definitely keep an open mind. I am picky about the types of items I will purchase second hand...mainly things like candle holders, accessories or an eclectic mirror for my mirror wall. Not a fan of the used shoes or kitchen gadgets and whatnot. From what I can tell, the items change over rather quickly. They are constantly bringing out new product to keep their sales floor stocked. Solid 3 stars....I would give them 4 but I am not fond of the fact that Goodwill gets 100% of their goods for free yet they still turn an insane profit instead of giving a larger percentage to charity. Its the one thing that inclines me to frequent other thift stores just a bit more. read more

Sadly I need to update my review and it's not for the better. After my experience with an incredibly rude and condescending staff member while dropping stuff off for donation they've lost a customer. I've been inside to see if they have any unusual or items I could use a few times but honestly I'm not too lucky in finding goods at thrift stores even though sometimes there are good things to be found. Generally before when I'd drop stuff off my they'd take my bags of goods I'd get a receipt for my donation and I'd be on my way. Today we won the jerk staff member lottery of a staff member who insisted on looking through our items and in the most unfriendly tone letting my husband and I know that some votive candle holders and a shoe rack weren't suitable for donation. Nice job Goodwill in employing an individual who has no business in working in the customer service field. I would avoid making donations at this location since you'll be treated with rudeness if you get unlucky like us. read more

Prices are insane. I remember seeing a 4mp digital SLR camera for about $200? I literally laughed. Honestly. I hear about these people finding all these good deals at their goodwill and I'm just sitting here wondering why these people think their junk is worth so much. Because that is what most of it is, though. Another thing, they keep all the DVDs and games in a book under the cash register. They don't leave them in the case, for fear that someone will steal it. But honestly, a) it takes too long to get the DVD from the book, and b) don't you think you're already stealing enough from us? smh read more

It's a bit chaotic inside, but that's how thrift/donation shops are, I guess! The clothing section for guys is a bit limited - nothing really that I could find. A lot of larger sizes on the racks. Their home goods section is actually a nice place to browse for quirky or unique items to add to your home decor or home tools. Found a couple vintage wooden tennis racquets that would typically go for $30+ each for only $3 each. Definitely can find some highly undervalued items here. Service seems nice. Overall goods selection isn't bad, but the men's section needs some help. read more

They are typically well stocked and fairly organized. The employees aren't especially nice and if you need help, expect an attitude. My biggest complaint is that they are over priced but for an occasional good deal. Perfect example of this today: a medium sized stuffed animal, dirty and with what appeared to be food stuck to one side=$9.99!!! Had it been $2, they would have made that sale and I likely would have bought 4-5 others. Just my opinion but prices need serious adjustments. read more

I went to a local Goodwill store located at Sterling Plaza II Shopping Center, 22405 Enterprise Street, Sterling, Virginia 20164 and I got terrible service. There was a book shelf that I was interested in but had a lot of issues with it. The shelf's were all warped, there was a shelf missing and the shelf its self was water damaged badly. All there other furniture was 50%+ off. I asked if I was able to get it lowered as it had a lot of damage done to it. They informed me very rudely "unless we have that item for over a month we CAN NOT lower the price. What is on it that is what YOU will have to pay". I explained that all the other furniture is 50%+ off I was then told "oh well we just put that out today and we will not lower the price just for you". I felt like they did not care at all about me. I then put everything back that I was going to get and walked out of the store. That is no way to treat me just because I wanted to get 50% off what they was asking for. it was marked for $10 and I was willing to pay $5 as all the other items were 50%+ off. I generally love coming here, but I come here for the random crap you can find...not the employees. Unfortunately, I had a rather poor experience today. They've been hocking the Goodwill Rewards program, which I generally shrug off because I don't want to go through the hassle of giving them my info, and I've been a retail employee before, so I know that most employees...don't really want to put down the info either, and it's a hassle if you can't find it. Well, we came home from California, and were in a good mood, so I made one. Came back today, and this kid (Pretty sure he's the SAME kid that signed us up) asked if I had a rewards card. I wasn't going to say anything, but my girlfriend was there who reminded us that Yes, we did have a rewards card. He couldn't find it by my phone number, and had to look up my name. My name, and phone number were incorrect, but we ended up finding me. It was my first purchase after the sign up, for which they promised 25% off. We had to ask for that - and remind them about three times that YES, we did get it, because it was the first time we'd bought anything since we signed up. Neither of the employees got it, they either didn't grasp English, or were ready to close up since it was nearing 8PM. But we finally got to apply a discount, whereupon they lowered the price from $42 to $38. I protested again, saying that 25% of 40 is $10...not $4. $4 would be 10%. They kept telling me NO, No, it's the tax, you forgot about the tax, the tax doesn't come off, etc. They argued with us, even got a manager involved, who also argued with us. We were there for ten minutes, arguing over a stupid discount at a stupid thrift store. So, I said whatever, apply whatever you want, we just want to go. Got home, did the math, and sure enough, it was a 10% discount. Look, I really don't care about money - but if you're going to hock your crap at me every time I come into the location, and then argue with me over the benefits like I'm an idiot that can't do math (I checked...but even then, looking at the receipt...what was the discount if it was initially $4.99 and came down to $4.49? Hmm...) I mean, you're just wasting my time. Will I continue to shop at Goodwill? Maybe. I mean, you do occasionally have 24" HD monitors for sale at like $15, which is stupid cheap. But I can't say as I'll be "rounding up" my purchase anymore. If this is how you spend my spare change, on incompetent employees...well, doesn't make much sense to me. read more

ARG!!! After many hours of making phone calls to different Goodwill Headquarters with no luck, I decided it's important for people to know what happened before going to visit this store. I'm writing to file a formal complaint against Iris Jimenez who is the General Manager of the Goodwill in Sterling, Virginia. There have been several incidents where I have been harassed by Iris Jimenez with the most recent being this past Saturday, July 25, 2015. I am completely fed up, extremely angry, upset and disheartened and have thus chosen to file a complaint with the hope that she be reprimanded for her actions. First, I have to point out that I'm a loyal and regular customer to the Goodwill located in Sterling, Virginia. I shop there at least 3 to 4 times a week and as a result I spend a good deal of money there. Because I am a frequent customer, I have come to know most of the employees who work there and I would like to highlight that they are all very welcoming and helpful with the exception of the General Manager. The General Manager; Iris Jimenez is arrogant, rude and has no customer service knowledge at all. Within the last couple of weeks I've noticed that whenever I am shopping she is right behind me checking what I buy and what I paid for, she MAKES ME FEEL LIKE A CRIMINAL. At first I tried to ignore it in the hopes that she would leave me alone but her continued actions make me realize that I am being harassed. The first incident of harassment occurred on July 12, 2015 when I drove by the pickup area at the Goodwill in Sterling to collect a furniture piece I had bought. Iris was sitting outside with Mr. Henderson J, (Goodwill employee) when she saw me she immediately turned to Mr. Henderson and said "She is getting good deals and changing prices," this is a very serious accusation to which I have no idea where she is drawing this from. As I was waiting to load the furniture into my car she proceeds to run inside the store and interrogate the employees who priced the furniture and the amount I paid for the furniture. The purchase receipt was taped over the furniture, THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR AND I WILL NOT BE FALSELY ACCUSED. THIS BEHAVIOR NEEDS TO STOP IMMEDIATELY. The second and most recent incident occurred on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at 2:30 PM. I was checking out at the register and Iris Jimenez (the store's General Manager) was ringing out my stuff, after I paid I left the store and as soon as I closed the door behind me, Iris Jimenez started talking loudly about me, accusing me of messing up the furniture, leaving things behind all around the store and not paying for my items. Iris obviously had no idea that my friend was paying for her items at the next cash register and overheard all the yelling and insults that Iris Jimenez was saying about me. It got to a point where my friend felt the need to say something to Iris Jimenez to stop her from talking about someone behind their back and to act like a professional and talk to the customer directly if she has an issue she wants to remedy. My friend is in no way a confrontational person and for her to have to intervene and tell the General Manager of the store to act more professional and to talk to me directly about the problem is incredibly sad. However, what was even more horrifying is Iris Jimenez completely ignored my friend and kept talking about me in front of other customers and employees. When I got back to the store to help my friend with her bags I could see she was upset and she proceeded to tell me what had happened. So, I approached the cashier's counter where Jimenez was and told her "if you have a problem with me, please come to me directly and don't do it behind my back." She then started to scream at me telling me that I left a chair behind the cash register and that I needed to tell her if I was buying the chair or not!!. Honestly, have no idea why she mentioned the chair but I told her I didn't think I needed anyone's permission to purchase the items I wanted to get. As a loyal and regular Goodwill customer I want this incident to be taken seriously and that Iris Jimenez be reprimand and sent to training on how to treat customers and employees with respect. She's the General Manager of this store and should set the example of how customers should be treated. I have no complaints about the other employees; they are all completely lovely people and have been nothing but kind and welcoming to me. Please see to it that this person gets the proper training and education on how to interact professionally with customers. read more

Wow I had to make an account just to write a review of this store. The items and products for sale are alright. But the customer experience is atrocious. I was in line waiting for at least 30 minutes. The cashier looked new, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but the guy helping was absolutely terrible and oblivious to everything. The line was so long and there was only one register open. When I learned that the guy helping the new cashier was a team lead I was blown away. This guy was so oblivious and just casually talking away while it people in line grew even more frustrated. His name tag said Mark B. And I can't believe someone like that can be made a team lead, he was so oblivious, not only that but he kept telling the new guy to take his time. I get that they might be learning but really hearing "take your time" when you have a massive line of annoyed guest is the worst. read more

I was a customer shopping one afternoon and saw a Spanish lady switch the price tags on one of her items that she wanted to buy. (She was with her daughter as well) --I saw her take a cheaper price tag, put it on hers, and ripped the price tag that was on her item off. I definitely notified the manager (she had really short hair and wore glasses on the top of her head) so she would talk to the lady because I had VISUALLY seen that customer change the price tag and it IS WRONG. IT IS STEALING and AGAINST THE LAW. So the customer told the head manager about what happened and said that she was being accused of harassing her and she even wrote a review here on Yelp. ** This is for the lady that switched the price tag. --Seriously, this is a thrift store, it's cheap as dirt and if you had to go that low to STEAL and break the law, than I feel really bad for you. YOU ARE WRONG AND THE MANAGER WAS RIGHT. Don't ever try to complain and get another person in trouble for doing the wrong thing. read more

Goodwill and I don't get along very well. However my mom is a regular customer. I drop her off almost once a week but I dare not go inside. Let me just start off by saying I think if you are regular enough you will be happy, as everything is in front of you, when it came how much was it did it sell or it's on sale. Bought a great great glass dining table with 4 chairs for only 75. Awesome deal. On a side note let me explain why I don't go there. We buy stuff and we donate as well. Easy drop off, pull your car over at the back of the store put your donations in the large bins and all done. So couple of years ago I pull over, had many large bags, lamps, furniture etc. I don't like to block the way so I pulled a little before the huge bins. Opened my trunk and busy unloading. A worker working there gave no acknowledgment. Fine by me. So this other lady pulls up in her SUV and in her high shorts and blonde hair, this guy goes running to unload her -wait for it, a table lamp and couple of frames. Well whatever, his choice. Very recently had to go to Advanced auto for something, mom was with me so I offered for few minutes. It was probably 8pm on Saturday. I said, you know what let me go in with her otherwise she won't return. Waited for her in the front by the books and jewelry section. Looked at a great price of rings 99c (BTW they were 99 c for two,) waited 10 min to have someone show it, but hey they were busy. I am looking, mind it there are 100ish rings. I am busy choosing so she is talking to maybe another worker or her friend. She says I have to go to lunch, the other person says well then go. "No I have to WATCH these rings." Corrects herself, "I can't leave these out." OK, store policy, understandable. Then she goes, "Are you done, is that enough for today, is that all you need?" I look up to see if she was talking to me, and yes she was. Then I smiled as in no I am not done. She says, "They would be here tomorrow." Well pretty busy lady who needs to take lunch, I won't be. I visited the goodwill in Sterling last weekend. To my surprise I felt I was in a horror movie. The Manager was threating her employees with her screams and scaring the shoppers, I was! She was extremely rude with Latin Americans and very friendly with White Americans cheering them as they walked in the store. The irony is that she herself is a Latin American. This is very unfortunate to see, specially in a place with a name "GoodWill". Most people who visit these stores are people with very little money or regulars who like to shop for fun and support the existence of these stores. Something needs to be done immediately to make these stores a safe place for employees and customers. read more

Utterly dreadful experience. This was my first visit to this location and it will certainly be my last. The first thing I noticed was the selection of furniture: the pricing system was very odd. We saw a desk that would have been very nice after a lot of love (stripping, sanding, painting) that was ticketed at two hundred dollars. A similar desk that simply needed some new drawer hardware and a polishing was seventy dollars. The same variances were seen across filing cabinets, chairs, and shelving; there was not even a semblance of a consistent pricing structure. Ridiculous prices could be seen on other items in the store, especially video game accessories. I was very excited by the large selection of books available and chose eleven paperback, nonfiction titles. We also chose a framed picture, some VHS tapes, a few house wears, and three collared shirts. By my calculation, the total should have been about $40, but it was rung up at sixty dollars... As a frequent Goodwill shopper, I am always on point with my subtotal, so it was clear something was wrong. The cashier decided to ring up all eleven books (each a different size, and only one 5x8) at the $1.59 rate for 5x8 paperbacks instead of the general $.99. We were then told that the two shirts found and selected from the children's section and tagged with children's sizes could only be rung up as adult shirts, despite having manufacturers tags with children's sizing on them. The cashier checked in the back, and proceeded to rering them as women's shirts, noting "we don't do that here," in regards to a different pricing structure for children's clothes (despite signage clearly indicating children's pricing). We decided not to purchase the books because I was too exhausted to explain the intricacies of paperback book sizing and don't have the disposable income to spend 60% more per book. Ultimately though I am disheartened, having spent a good deal of time selecting books of interest; I now know why their selection of books is so extensive. I would just like to say that as a very frequent customer of the Goodwill in Gaithersburg, I have never had any issue finding or purchasing reasonably and accurately priced merchandise prior to this visit to the Sterling location. Pricing between these two locations is extraordinarily different considering they are both under the DC area division of Goodwill, though the official signage would have you think otherwise, policies are grossly misapplied at the Sterling location with the sole goal of having customers spend more money for the same products. I regularly donate to Goodwill and patronize their shops, I round up my total most of the time, and I do my best to support their charitable missions. As a low income person I appreciate being able to get gently used clothing and entertainment at a price I can afford while having my purchase continue on to benefit others through Goodwill's employment and training services. Today's visit has soured the good will I have for Goodwill. read more

A good place to find treasures. I was at the Sterling Store on Saturday, and I didn't know of the super Saturday sale until I saw the crowd outside earlier in the morning. The staff welcome us with a smile on their face while we were fighting over the shopping cart. The store was beautiful organized and and the staff helping each other to help us out. My purchase was over $200.00, and was carefully wrapped by the manager helping her cashier with the lines. As I reading previous reviews on this store, it makes me wonder. ..Why people used social media to be harmful. Goodwill has done so much for the community and my family that your comments go back on you all as having a bad day. Use the media to help our community and NOT TO DESTROY IT!!! Aaaand once again my experience at the goodwill in Sterling has been awful. I thought with all the complaints about how customers were treated by the staff, goodwill would perhaps fix the problem but it seems to not have made any difference. This particular time I had brought up my purchase which was a piece of furniture to the register and immediately I started getting questioned/interogated/accused. The Hispanic male behind the register started asking me where the other price sticker was and that there should be two stickers. That's fine I get that there should be 2 stickers but the way he kept asking and he kept on insinuating I took the price or changed the price sticker and I told him no repeatedly and he kept on going and going. And because there were other customers around and could clearly hear what was being said I felt embarrassed and harrassed. After my initial shock of being accused and essentially treated like a criminal I told him I didn't do anything to the price and if he was so concerned to check the security cameras. That seemed to convince him enough but the damage was already done and I left feeling completely embarrassed, harrassed and hurt. If this type of harassment continues to occur goodwill is bound to find themselves getting sued for discrimination and harrassment. I'm tired of being constantly questioned, maybe it's because I'm Hispanic and they seem to be less trusting of some races than others. If there so concerned about the prices being changed or swapped, have it written in permanent marker on the bottom of the furniture, clothes, shoes etc. I shouldn't have to say "check the security camera" at the register. Goodwill Sterling, you should be ashamed of yourself. Please, fix this problem ASAP. read more

Forget about donating furniture to this store unless it is in mint, pristine condition. I mean, like new...you just bought something and then decided that you didn't like it and instead of returning it and get your money back you just go and donate it...because that makes sense. Or at least that's want they want you to believe. Twice I have been told the furniture is not acceptable for donation (side table and desk chair) because of small scratches from normal use. The kicker is that when I went inside the store both times after dealing with the not very nice employee (always the same person) I found beat up furniture way worse than what I was trying to donate. And at outrageous prices (I actually think most things at the store are overpriced). Since this has happened twice I will not be coming back for a third time. I'll take my business elsewhere or just let things collected dust in my garage. read more

I'm not sure what has happened to this location. The good merchandise is not making it to the floor or is extremely overpriced. What gives? This location is not even worth my time anymore. read more

This is a great operation that takes donations without a lot of fuss but with a thank you. The store is always busy and draws a diverse group of customers. Their good works as a corp are evident on their website. It is a worthwhile place to donate what you cant use or are tired of stepping over. read more

GoodWill is seriously getting ridiculously picky about their DONATED furniture items!! I am a Realtor and interior designer, I know what furniture will sell and what is garbage! So I decided to do a little test... I have a house full of furniture. Couch set, a rug, a wall unit, a large table with six chairs, and a futon. They took only the IKEA futon. Now I know they probably would not have taken the wall unit and the rug... But the couches and tables they should have taken! I literally have a girl coming to buy the couches from me after seeing them. They're getting either lazy because they don't want to move the furniture or they're getting ridiculously picky. Wish I could post pictures of the table with six chairs and couch. I am not donating anything to Goodwill ever again. There are seriously people out there that don't have any furniture or that are starting over... That could definitely use this furniture more than Goodwill. read more

I have made many donations here and the recieving staff have always been professional and courteous. The process is simple and fast. There are donation organizations much closer to my home than this store but I come here because of the service. read more
