I haven't been inside this Goodwill, but I have nothing but gratitude for the donation center. I love getting rid of stuff, and Goodwill makes it easy, with a clear, specific list of things they will and will not accept. In practice, they take everything and sort it themselves, trusting the general public not to use them as a dumpster. We just renovated my husband's childhood home and have taken the opportunity to do some decluttering. After a few weeks of this, we had several boxes of kitchen and other home goods we no longer wanted. A lot of this stuff was in reasonable condition, and I drove it over to Carrillo Street in a couple cathartic trips. The parking lot of the donation center was bustling with activity, a stream of cars coming in with donations, and a diligent crew working to receive them. The guys I talked to were very nice and helpful, and they took my boxes, no questions asked. I hope those random mugs and books and office supplies find people who might enjoy them. I hate the idea of all that stuff ending up in a landfill, and am happy it gets another chance. read more

I love Goodwill stores and this one was a great one I found so many goodies in there. The prices were not too bad. The more expensive items I found were under $20 brand new. The store is well stocked and organized as well. Definitely worth a visit if you're into thrifty stuff. They have a small parking lot in the back of the store if you lucky to get an empty spot. It's Friday at 5. So pour a drink and settle in. I have over 1000 reviews and recently received an email from Yelp saying that I'm among "the most positive" reviewers. 841 of 1014 % are 4s and 5s (by the old metric, where 5 was "as good as it gets"). Only 73 are 1 or 2. That's like 7%. You have to really, really mess up to earn a VO goes scorched earth review but one employee here did. So here goes. I was having THE BEST day (great week too) and the young woman with the ombre ponytail was so noxious, so utterly toxic that I feel it is my civic duty warn other happy people that an encounter with her is likely to result in heightened blood pressure even if your normal is, like mine, 110/70. I went in this afternoon to get some glass pitchers (for teas, juices, waters to keep in the fridge). But the minute I entered, I found the following chair. I gasped! It was so beautiful (Thomasville!) and in pristine condition. I look at the tag: $24.99. Too good to be true! Happy day! It doesn't fit in my 2007 Saab but next Tuesday I have a colonoscopy and my ride home drives a Range Rover so we can swing by Good Will on the way back from Dr Aguirre. As I'm about to pay, I see the most beautiful, sweet pitbull I've ever seen (and I love pitties). The mom says I can pet and we have a love fest, even if my heart is a little broken that I have to say goodbye to this absolute snuggle bug. On the mannequin is a sequined dress with a tag from Macy's: $109. This seems unlikely but I see no Good Will tag (it was inside but inaccessible). The WONDERFUL young man helping me with the chair (he tried to get it into the car but hadn't counted on the door being the issue, rather than the seat) tells me it's $7.99. I ask where the dressing room is and he says there isn't one but that--and I quote---I can "take it home to try on and return it [if it doesn't fit]." Side note: I've never been to a secondhand store you couldn't try things on. The Santa Monica Good Will (26/Wilshire, now closed) had dressing rooms. Ditto EVERY Housing Works in NYC. I bring the dress back a few hours later and told that there's no store credit OR refund. Also, the dress is $19.99 not $7.99. But I have been thrifting my whole life and at Good Will, things are lower than the price marked ALL the time. They don't have staff to go and re-mark everything. What, then, does "return" mean? It means that you can buy something else of equal value but you CANNOT get a receipt to bring back at a later date. Here's the ridiculous system in place: you buy something else of equal value within 7 days. I never would have bought a $20 dress without EITHER refund OR store credit. Enter the young woman with the ponytail. She's rabid (as in rabies) and immediately started in about reading the receipt, and looking at the price. Well I was too busy drooling over the pitbull and the chair score, plus the young man seemed so competent and nice. If he said the dress was $7.99 I had no reason to doubt this. Neither did I feel the need to cross-examine him as to the meaning of "return." I mention I was an English teacher (UCSB, btw, not high school) and she shot back---after I was talking to the SANE manager in a black suit, 30s or so--"You'd think an English teacher would read a receipt." Unreal. She wouldn't mind her own business because at this point it was a grudge match, which--hilariously---this girl thinks she's going to win. The manager deserves a medal for diplomacy. He said her attitude is, well, what it is because the clientele of this store isn't like other secondhand stores. Read: on drugs, unreasonable, unstable. In other words, she has to behave this way because some aggressive person without a home (you're not allowed to say homeless anymore) might wig out. He conceded that I did not fall into that category (and maybe the giant ring on my finger might have indicated that I did, indeed, reside in a structure with four walls.) Good try, though, and I really appreciated this man's attempt to diffuse the situation. I entered the store in a blissful mood and that woman singlehandedly made me want to sign up for a boxing class just to release the anger I felt at her poisonous energy. Noxious and poisonous are the only adjectives for that employee. It's very down-market stuff mostly so the gorgeous chair will have been $45 dollars. Still a deal but what a fiasco. P.S. The rabid one isn't over 25. She has zero idea what she's talking about. Items are often less than marked. NO ONE at Destined By Grace in Goleta would EVER behave like that woman, who clearly is very, very unhappy. This of course is neither my fault nor my problem. Run-of-the-mill hostile I would have let go. But she is horrible and I consider it a public service to warn anyone who intends to visit this store to STEER CLEAR! read more

Adored Grandson, who's 16 and discovering the joys of thrifting and maximizing his money, wanted to check out options in Santa Barbara on a recent day trip. We tried another thrift shop that turned out to be a total bust. It was a happy step up to walk in to this Goodwill location. Clean, organized, directions on the floor to walk the aisles to minimize contact / increase social distancing. All good! The housewares section had some very nice items. Several were not only a good deal, but in great condition. The only drawback is that we are already maxed out on space, and trying to get rid of excess items, not bring in more, even if they are pretty. There were enough items to keep me interested in checking them out while AG was doing his thing. He ended up finding a pair of khakis and a button down shirt, which was he was seeking. The cashier was really friendly, making the check out experience a happy one. They have their own private parking lot, and are away from the bustle of State Street. Will be happy to go back again when the (newly) Frugal One wants to check them out on a return visit. read more

Fairly busy on a Monday afternoon. The staff are helpful and cheery. If you tell them what you are looking for, they will point you in the right direction. I found 3 Christmas sweaters and 2 Christmas pj's, which was exactly what I was looking for. I am a thrift store expert and fond of Goodwill. I've stopped at this Goodwill a couple times, most recently last Saturday and was pleased with what I found. It's a small store located in a busy part of town and I am thankful they have their own parking lot. Some furniture, a room full of clothes and a some displays of housewares, glassware, home electronics and decorative items. It's worth stopping in to see if you find something you like, if nothing else for the convenience. It has never looked this good, and the staff is the friendliest I have ever see in all the years I have been shopping this location. There are other radio stations you can support locally in Santa Barbara besides KJEE. Just because they are located above you doesn't mean you have to play them. The music blasts through the store and is repative and just plain sucks. I said something to the employees and they expressed how much they hated it too! read more

Something happened at the Goodwill on Carillo. I used to find great clothing at reasonable prices. Designer clothing because it's Santa Barbara and we have a lot of rich people here. Goodwill remodeled and that is great. It looks nice but the clothing is bad. The clothing is now worn to death, sometimes stained. The few good pieces of designer clothing is marked up like crazy. A mall brand pair of shoes that are worn are $15.00! My take on it is that they are selling the good stuff out the back door to dealers. I no longer go in there. read more

This is one of the more rougher Goodwills I have visited in recent memory. An example of this was the rack of mens "tighty whities" displayed on clip hangers (trust me that the garments were large and not tight and were far from white). Still I continued to shop on and look for hidden gems. A good portion of the store is filled with clothing although there is a decent selection of furniture and knick knacks as well. Everything seemed to be priced relatively fair throughout the entire store. The employees are also helpful and friendly. Although this isn't one of my favorite secondhand stores it isn't the worst I've been to. One of the saving graces to this particular Goodwill is the location. It's located close to the haps of State Street and if you're hungry you can eat at the Rusty's Pizza or the Sushi Teri that are within a few steps, both of which I highly recommend. read more

If you are a guy looking for men's clothing or shoes-Don't go to this Goodwill! They may get a men's shirt in once a week or tee shirt or shoes! The men's racks are never rotated, just the same clothes day after. There was a time they even colorized the clothing like all other GW stores, but this one takes absolutely no concern for the merchandising of the store. Go to the Carp store or even Ventura and you will see what a GW store should look lIke!!! read more

It's a store selling trash! Broken worn out items for sale at this goodwill. There is nothing of value. Only worn out, broken items. I have been told that anything of value donated here is sent to the corporate store and sold online for going prices. Not a great thrift store. VERY DEPRESSING to shop here. This was my favorite trip to this Goodwill. I got an awesome desk for only $22! The woman at the front counter, I think her name was Christina, was super helpful and even cracked some jokes. The gentleman who helped me move the desk to my car was also super friendly and helpful, and even ran back to the store for a wrench so we could disassemble the legs to fit the desk in my car. If not for the prices of this goodwill definitely come for the people! read more

This wasn't an awful goodwill as I found a few good items to buy, but there could be a lot of things changed about it! There's no fitting rooms, and on google their hours say 8am-5:30 pm but on the doors they say they open at 9!! Please update your hours on google. Also, the items aren't organized by size at all and it's very hard to find the right sizes. read more

By far the WORST thrift store in Santa Barbara. The clothes are overpriced ($10 for a used Forever 21 dress? It's cheaper new!!). Staff aren't particularly friendly or welcoming. But worst of all are the other customers. There are regulars who hang out here. Whenever a new rack of clothes comes out, they will shove you out of the way so they can rifle through the rack and grab that pair of old True Religion jeans to sell at the flea market. I've been to LA Goodwills where there are lots of aggressive dealers, but in LA the Goodwills actually have cool stuff. I'm honestly surprised that people are able to make a living off of doing that at this store. read more

I thought the selection here would be good since State St. is only a few feet away--Oh, dear... You were surely mistaken. The prices are a bit higher than what I'm used to and get this, they do not even have a fitting room. So you have to try on clothes over the ones that you walked in with, which really sucks. How come they cannot add a small addition? Adding on, the selection is disappointing. I was expecting to find some amazing stuff here, but I only walked out with a few things. Also, a big pet peeve of mine... The clothes do not have tags on them. It's hard for me to keep track of the cost of my items based on a small sign on the wall. Why are there no tags? What gives? This place is wretched. It's the worst thrift store I've ever walked into. I gave it 3 separate tries over 2 years and it's the same every time. Looking through their merchandise is like arriving at a garage sale, late, on a Sunday at 4:30 pm - you'll find a broken woven basket, a smelly couch and some tacky knick-knacks no one would want... and some ugly brass lamp you couldn't shabby-chic if you were a craft-prodigy. Personally I think there is a scam going on here. How is it in one of the wealthiest towns around with the people donating pulling up in BMW's and Mercedes, yet nothing worthwhile makes it to the shelves??? I think someone's picking through all the good stuff and selling it for profit or craigslist or something. read more
