The cashier was a dopey woman, laughed off my question "How can you sell broken electronics?!" I asked to speak to manager. Luckily, he was rationale and refunded me. I called them and asked do they take motorized scooters for donations, and they said yes. I told him the scooter didn't start, but a good mechanic could probably fix it in less than 5 minutes. He said no problem. When I tried to donate it 2 days later, they turned me away. Extremely unprofessional, a waste of my time. I will NEVER donate to this location ever again. read more

First and last time coming to this location. Got rudely greeted by being told they were closing soon and as I was headed out an old man started yelling "No no no no, we close in 4 minutes" to 2 customers walking in and they said they were just going to quickly browse and head out and the worker responded "of course you're not." I've worked retail and understand how frustrating it can be to try and start cleaning up while last minute straddlers walk in, but that is no way to treat a customer, whether they decide to make a purchase or not. If the doors are open, customers are allowed to come in. If you do not want people coming in last minute, lock the doors! but of course they won't do that because it's not policy. read more

I have been shopping a few times a year at this Herndon Goodwill for about three years. When I started going three years ago, I found a fair number of mid-level brands (and an occasional higher level brand) in very good condition. And items were priced fairly. About two years ago, I started to notice that the quantity of the inventory on the floor had decreased. I was more shocked to discover that so many items (not just at this Goodwill but at many others in the area) never make it to the floor and wind up in the trash because there's such a surplus of items. I would imagine glassware is being destroyed simply because the likelihood that many/most would break in route to the nearest outlet (which are all located in Baltimore and SoVA which at least a 90 minute drive from the DC Metropolitan area) is fairly high. I HAVE A SOLUTION! Goodwill corporate management - If you are reading this, PLEASE open an OUTLET store in the DC area. There are FOUR outlet stores just in Denver alone! This way EVERYONE benefits. GW gets: -to sell these items locally -to utilize the sale of these items to fund the local programs here in DC area -to keep items out of our overflowing landfills Your customers get: -a chance to purchase surplus local merchandise -feel good supporting local GW programs -an opportunity to shop at THE BINS here -help individuals who don't have the means to get merchandise at a great price point -create more job opportunities for the area The Bed Bath & Beyond in Vienna, VA on Route 123 shut down some time ago. The building is still empty. It would be a PERFECT location for an outlet. And it has a nice sized parking lot. Please consider this. This Goodwill is a little bit further from my house but a better investment in time because the selection of furniture, home accessories and kitchenware is really good. I've scored some real bargains in decorative accessories like lamps, mirrors and frames, especially when you find an item from the color of the week (check out the price tag color for 50% off - the info on what the color is for that week is written on a sign right when you walk in). I recently scored a metal framed mirror for $15 that retails at Macy's for $150+. But be aware, I've also seen Walmart mirrors that cost $20 priced here for $15. It's always worth it to check the labels. This location also has a hefty selection of plates and glassware, but I find them to be overpriced compared to yard sales (where you can negotiate a bulk discount) unless the item is the color of the week. Many of the glasses and stemware are cheap, Dollar Store-quality and they're priced from $.99 to $1.99, so you might end up spending more than retail. Goodwill isn't the place I shop when I'm looking for something specific that I really need, but it's always worth a wander for that rare gem that will make me smile. Did I need this Mom mug for $3? No. But because it's the brand I grew up with as a kid in the 70s in Germany, at $1.50, it was the right price. read more

Compared to the Centreville Goodwill this one falls WAY short. It was dirty and lacked variety. I spent an hour in here trying to find something and came out empty handed. They didn't have any good brands and the clothing lacked quality, probably won't be back. read more

Though I took a stroll through the store, my primary objective was to drop off and donate items. This store makes it super easy as there is a large area in the back of the store for drop offs and no need to wait. There were two of three guys out back to assist and they quickly helped me out with my loads of stuff and provided me with a receipt. I'll return here whenever I have items to donate as it was much easier than other locations that I have gone to in the past. The store itself was clean and employees were warm and welcoming. I was just there to browse and was looking for an obscure and particular piece of furniture they didn't have. This store was also laid out better than other Goodwill stores I've visited in the DMV. Highly recommend this store both for donating items and also for buying good quality, inexpensive items. read more

I just cannot believe the treatment we received from this goodwill this Sunday July 22nd. I had the privilege to check out with Jon B. and it was the rudest and most condescending experience I've ever received in the last 5 years of shopping at any Goodwill. We had 2 children's books for my daughter who was with me. One book was a baby board book with three, purple, 99 cent price tags cleanly applied on the front and back covers. The other book had two cleanly applied unmarked yellow tags on the front and spine. As yellow was the color of the week (50% off) and unmarked children's books range from $1 to $3 depending on size, the second book's price came to $1.50 at the register. Somehow the board book with the *THREE* 99 cent purple tags also had a single, tiny, torn piece of a yellow price tag stuck across the bottom of its pages, hardly a spot where price tags are normally placed. Any sane and reasonable person would've concluded this piece was from the other book we were buying or was from a stray tag from the bookshelf. But rather than calmly discussing his concern and trying to consider it rationally, Jon B. lost it and rudely told us that we could not buy either book because of price tampering. This made no sense whatsoever as the effective difference between the two price tags was 50 cents, hardly worth the trouble for a children's book! We tried unsuccessfully to reason with him, but his ultimate response was even more shocking. Not only did he refuse to sell the children's books but he further decided to NOT sell us any items at all and snidely asked us to "have a nice day." When we asked to speak to the manager, he lied and told us that he was the manager. Only when we pointed out that he was a "Team Lead" and insisted on speaking to the real manager on duty, did Jon B. contact the manager. When the manager arrived, my husband explained to him what happened, and Jon B. pretended that he was only trying to hurry up because the line was long and he couldn't resolve the price for the board book. He had no explanation for his rude behavior and why he refused to sell us any other items. Based on Jon's invalid account of the price tag ambiguity, the manager declined to allow us to purchase the 99 cent board book. But he did confirm that all our other items were valid for sale and allowed us to take them to another cashier for purchase. We told the manager that this is not the first time Jon B. was rude and condescending and we never had problems with any other employees at this or any other Goodwill in the DC region. The manager gave no acknowledgement. When I told them I will definitely be contacting the regional manager about my experience today, they did not care one bit. It's outrageous that all of this happened because of a 99 cent children's book. It's really, really pathetic and ridiculous. Sadly though, this is not our first negative and rude experience with Jon B. at this store. But this time was just way past the line. No one should ever be treated like this when shopping at Goodwill. read more

The website, hours on Yelp, hours on the phone, hours from a Siri search all said that the store was open until 8 today. I got to the store at 6:15PM, and it was closed. I understand it was for the holiday, but why was that not updated on the phone? Completely wasted trip, wasted time and fuel, when I called to confirm hours. People who work there in donations and the store are friendly, and I am happy that they got some time off for the holiday (hopefully paid), but it would have been nice not to have wasted time. read more

For those looking to visit this location for the first time, the coordinates on Goolge maps are wrong and this place is located at the end of the shopping plaza to the north most side near Hama sushi. It took me a little while to find it because the map thinks it is located off of Centerville road, which it is not. This is by far one of the best Goodwills I have been to as far as making donations go. I had a few bags of clothing to donate, and as soon as I parked my car one of the staff members walked over to me an offered to carry the bags of clothing for me. I gave him one bag (the heavier one of course) and toted the other two myself. We put the bags on one of the receiving carts and he immediately offered me a receipt without my even asking! Who knew DONATING TO THE LESS FORTUNATE was a worry of the staff here... got to the donation center a little after 5 only to be met by an angry woman with glasses around back saying "oh we're closed" and a half-hearted "sorry" after I walked away in confusion. Goodwill is my 'go to' place for donating my unwanted household items, I've been donating to them for years, here and in other states. This location is great. The staff taking items in are organized; they know where they want the items they are receiving to be placed and direct me where to park and where to place my items. Sometimes they help, sometimes not. I love to poke around inside, because I often find some little treasure and the prices are reasonable. The staff clearly have multiple demands on their time and the occasional difficult customer, but I have found them to be helpful, cheerful and professional. read more

I used to shop here regularly but lost interest due to the fact that you can't find deals anymore. Since they started their weekly color-coded pricing, the only thing left for a "deal" on week 4 is junk that no one wants. I was also disillusioned when I went to one of their "Grand Openings". The executives were all there in their 3-piece suits and dressed like they worked on Wall Street. Their greed is showing....... that his isn't about being a charity anymore. However, the prices are ridiculous and you'd be better off going to IKEA. Chairs were about $20-25 and tables were $40+. Shopped here for years. One Saturday afternoon I found a Silpat (bakers will know what it is) price $.96. Sneaky, dishonest clerk said to me, "Oh, wow! Great deal. Can I show it to someone else who doesn't know what it is?" I replied that it was okay, but she brought it back with a $2.96 price tag. Management needs to think about an employee who is dishonest with customers, are they being dishonest with employer. Have not returned since, and I will never return. Won't ever go here again. Tried to donate a like new patio set and was told by the guy working the backdoor to "go load it on the trailer for him". I informed him I would put it by the trailer but I was not going to load a semi trailer for him. He proceeded to explain it would take him too long and it was hot and it wasn't worth his time?!? Another worker came over and started to be a complete idiot to my wife. Asking if she needed a job and to be lucky she didn't have to work the door on such a hot day. Something about how it's 2018 and we aren't the only ones donating stuff?? And how fortunate we were to not have to come there to purchase items like others??? Not really sure where they were going other then they didn't want to lift anything that could fit into a roller cart (the set wasn't even that heavy I carried it all by myself farther than they needed to move it and loaded it in my pickup). I try to donate good stuff to help others who might still find value in items we have upgraded. It wasn't trash, it's in great shape and just didn't fit where we live. Unfortunately, like others my like for this location has been greatly down graded. Saw 2 items priced well over regular retail costs! Terra cotta pots marked $1.96 each. Just bought the same ones at Michaels for $.89 each. And Halloween decorations marked $1.96 each that I've seen in multiple packs for under $5. I was reading some reviews about this location and all I can think about it is how ungrateful this persons are, this is one of the best Goodwill in the area, this store is very clesn organize and they slways have great quality items to sell, their clothing department has great clothes. This place is great! As frequent customer I heard many times customer saying very nasty things to their employees and they just stay on silence. This employees always busy, helping people when they need, I witnessed many things but I only can think they are great employees. Many of us like to complain when we are upset for any reason but we don't often said the good things we see. Their stuff/ staff are great! I stopped going to this Goodwill over a year ago even though it is the closest to me. It is a little bit small, and I never could seem to find anything to buy. The store was always very crowded, kind of messy, and just seemed "picked over". I popped in today because I was driving by and noticed that the parking lot looked pretty empty. There were other shoppers, but it wasn't packed, and I was even able to find some great half priced items! More importantly, the employees were very busy cleaning (wiping down EVERY surface including the clothes hangers) and restocking. They went about their work cheerfully and greeted every customer. Checkout was quick and friendly. What a great experience and pleasant surprise! I will be back. read more

I couldn't believe how incredibly RUDE the man handling donations was. We just moved across the country and our stuff had been in storage. We decided our daughter had outgrown her highchair, so we brought it to Goodwill. Apparently it had a stain on the side of it, probably from the time in storage. I really don't know where the stain came from. We were told that it was not suitable, that "You can't let children be around stuff like that." We offered to clean it and bring it back when we saw the stain, but he made it clear that wouldn't do. "Obviously you haven't cleaned this for a long time, or ever." Even if it was the nastiest highchair in the world (it wasn't) and even if we were really that dirty of people (we're not), that man was incredibly offensive. I have honestly never been that insulted probably ever, but definitely not in a situation where customer service should be applicable. I don't generally write negative reviews, I just don't go there again.That's how offensive this man was. I will never go there again, and I really want to warn people that this might happen to them. Before I went, I read another review that mentioned that the people at donations were sometimes rude, but I wrote it off. Don't make that mistake. read more

This is a smaller store compared to the others I ve seen. I dropped off one bag of donations. The guys promptly offered a receipt, which is great. I also stopped at the store to look for few small items. It was busy, which is awesome. Goodwill gets their funding from selling donating items to do the good work for many people in need. I think remembering the mission of this organization will make shopping and searching through inventory a bit more meaningful :) The older lady who worked the register yesterday was outstanding! read more

So I've been driving around with 30 or 40 items in my car for a month or two and finally have a chance to stop in and drop off these items. They close at nine but apparently that doesn't mean you can drop items off then. The gentleman in the back was cleaning the sidewalk and was nice enough but said I had to come back another time if I wanted a receipt. Isn't the purpose of goodwill to at least show some goodwill towards other people including those who donate? Isn't that the epitome of Goodwill? I went to drop off a couple bags of stuff tonight at about 5:35. The website says the donation center closes at 6:00. As I was backing into a parking space, two employees came up to my car--so close that I couldn't move for fear of hitting them. They told me that the store was closed, but if I didn't have much, they could take it. OK, great. But then they kept insisting that the store was closed, and when I replied that I hadn't known because of the hours listed on the website, one of the employees said, "Well, in the real world, the store closes at 5:30," and pointed to a sign that apparently listed the hours. I couldn't see the sign because it was dark. Strange response delivered rudely. The second guy stayed so close to my car that I couldn't open the door, and he only moved when the first employee told him to. If I hadn't had someone else in the car with me, I would not have felt safe getting out of the car to hand off the items. They both kept repeating that the store was closed. I get it, but it's not my fault that the website is wrong, so I didn't appreciate being scolded about it. I'd have left and come back another time if they had just said they were closed; they're the ones who said they'd take my things anyway. I'm glad they eventually took my stuff, but from now on, I'll donate to the Sterling. Not worth it to get a lecture. read more

I have not been to the store in a long time, me and husband decided to go and take a look to see what we could find and to my surprise I found the store looking better then I have ever seen it. There were a lot of new employees that I have not seen in my pervious visits, while I was shopping a worker came up to me and offered me a shopping cart because I had a lot things in my hands. The store looks very clean and every organized. The prices are excellent and there's so much variety of good quality clothing!!! I will definitely return and shop again at this goodwill!!!! Prices are atrocious! By far the worst Goodwill in the area for prices. I can only imagine that once they receive one of the countless FREE items, they pull up eBay, match the highest price and slap a sticker on. However, eBay items are fully functional, priced per condition and purchases are backed by a 30-day money back guarantee. Goodwill is: it may work, let us know in 7 days if it doesn't and we'll only give you store credit, IF you travel back to the exact store you got it from. My suggestion is go back to standard pricing by categories so you can actually move items, out of the store. read more

UNPROFESSIONAL! I was looking at a child's chair for my my son and they had one I was interested in. The price tag said $5.99 for a pair but I only saw one chair. I was curious and asked the manager if it would be half price due to there only being one chair and it saying for a pair. Earlier I had noticed all the other children's chairs were priced at $2.99. She said oh no that it went with a table and the person who bought it must have donated it back. (My guess is they probably didn't notice it or only wanted the table and left it) So I asked if they're just going to sell the chair for $5.99 then? That doesn't seem right. She said Oh NO, I have to take it back to processing, we can't change prices. What? You're the store manager?... So I asked how long that will take I'm interested in the chair for my son. She said oh it will take at least 24 hours. WHAT? She then took the chair to the back. I said but I'd like to buy it for my son. She said sorry, I can't do anything and to come back tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to get it. That's some BS! I don't live in this area. As a Career store manager, I'd just resolve the situation and do what makes sense and make the customer happy. Instead she denied me the item I wanted to purchase and told me to come back tomorrow. Ridiculous! I thought Goodwill uses their profits to train and develop people? Well they certainly need more training at this location. That and the other staff was rude when I asked them and had to find the manager. I'm glad I don't live in the area because I'd never return! read more

I shop at Goodwill once a week and buy anywhere from 25-40 items each visit. This has been the case for the past 1.5 years. I am a regular and have gotten to know the employees well. Frank is hands down the best manager and always goes above and beyond. He calls me his number 1 customer Another manager there, Mary, really needs some customer service classes. Every single time I have interacted with her she comes across as rude and very unfriendly. I've seen her interact with employees and is actually friendly and nice! I went to Goodwill after work Monday the 21st and arrived at 6:05 just to find they closed an hour early for Presidents day. They are usually open until 8:00 but are temporarily closing at 7:00 due to not enough staff. This was a bummer and normally not a big deal but I had items that needed to be returned and it was the 7th day. I am not someone who expects rules to be bent just for me, but when I spend as much as I do and am a regular customer, cutting me a little slack every now and then would really be appreciated. I went in the following day and was told no about returning my items. Then 20 seconds after telling me no she gets on the intercom and announces their return policy. Really? So rude!! I almost always round-up my change at checkout, when I'm shopping if clothes are hanging off the hanger I fix it, I take every item I'm buying off the hanger so the cashier doesn't have to. I do that because I want to help and have grown to really like the employees there. However many clothes I'm returning, best believe I am buying triple of what is being returned. And I know they CAN do returns past 7 days, because another location has done it for me a few times in the past. I work 11:00-8:00 5 days a week and its super difficult sometimes to get in there on time for returns. It's not like I'm screwing around and coming in when I feel like it. This is only the second time I was late on returns too, no where near habitually late. read more

Goodwill, turned my desire to help into a nightmare for me and my son. On Friday 3:30 pm, I approached Herndon, VA store, to donate 2 boxes with clothes and a Big black construction bags also with clothes. They gave me a receipt. A few hours later I realized that one of the boxes had been donated by mistake and it contained my son's clothes and personal belongings. - (we are moving and this was one of his boxes). I returned to the store at 8 pm, trying to talk to someone and find the box, but the donation center had closed at 7:00 pm, the person who asked for help in the store, already answered me in a bad way that she could not go to the warehouse and that I could return the next day 9:30 am. If I wanted to. On Saturday 9/14/2019 at 9:30 am, I present myself at the donation center. (technically 3:30 hours after donating the boxes). The first employee already replied that he knew nothing and could not do anything. My surprise was big, not understanding how they could not help me, another employee appeared on the sidewalk and told me to prepare a list of things in the boxes, leave my personal data, and if she found something similar would call me, (That sounds nonsense). I insisted that they understand that they were personal items donated by mistake 3:30 hours ago, but they seemed immune to any explanation and request for help. The manager was present on the sidewalk, finally someone with a little more experience handling situations would listen to me.( I thought) I explained the story of my son's box, one more time and she firmly the only thing she did was repeat and repeat that they could not waste time looking for the box, or look over it, or let me peek through the door. told me the place was of maximum security and could not let me pass or accompany me to walk through 25 ft inside the donation center .. They also told me that maybe things were already in the store for sale, (I think it was another nonsense comment). But I waited until 10:00 am, the storage will open and see if those things were hanging. I was walking through the store when I realize that this person was apparently taking pictures of me, situation that made me feel even more frustrated and made me definitely think that all that have no sense, that I had been treated like crap by these people . It made me persuade, that this organization could fail with one employee, but not four employees including the manager, not understanding and differentiating, when a donor has a problem. I was left with the most horrible sensation and my son lost his personal things, accompanied by all this with the insensitivity of an organization (Goodwill Transforming lives & communities). He then proceeded to tell me to take my hoops back home because no one would buy them. I even called and asked if they take hula hoops and they do!
